My family and i visited Nick the Greek on a Sunday afternoon following church and we got there just in time to beat the crowd that followed. Having never been there, I had no preconceived notions about what to expect, but it was a hybrid fast food/sit down model. We ordered at the counter and went to choose a table. The food was a bit pricier than I would have expected for what we received. Portions were ample, but not what I would consider "generous," and there was nothing that stood out to me as special or exemplary about the meal. Value for the dollar, there are several other Mediterranean restaurants in the vicinity that I would just as soon patronize. But-- lest I leave my readers thinking there was nothing of value about it-- let me say that the last minute addition of baklava was SPECTACULAR! At most places my family and I usually get one piece and share, but while I was busy chatting it up with my friends, my wife and daughter DEVOURED the dessert and purchased another knowing I would want to try something that good! I had high hopes for this place, but sadly everything was just *okay* for me. My partner and I ordered to-go, which may have been a mistake, because everything was soggy when we finally got to eat. I bet if we dined in, we might have had a different experience with our food. The portions are HUGE (half a gyro is more than enough for me) and everything is sauced almost too well, making it hard to save any leftovers because it's just pita soaked through and sloppy. Fries in the gyro is a fun thought but unnecessary, because the fries are the sad, thin kind and they were soggy too. So excited to find this place! I definitely recommend. The portion sizes, especially on the kids is bigger that you could probably have kiddos split, (which is what I wish I would of done). The meat was tender and everything was very flavorful. My only thing I would recommend is that you ask light on the sauce. Wow! The best Gyros I've had in Kansas City. Fresh. It was delicious. The pita itself was great and the meat was delicious and the tzatziki sauce was good (and I asked for an extra side of it.). Fries seemed to be freshly peeled and I enjoyed what I ate (nice portion) but I focused on the gyros. I was greeted and was actually helped (with patience) when trying to decide what to order. Stopped in after a basketball game with a very hungry athlete. We ordered gyro plates with the Greek fries... yum. I highly recommend the Greek fries seasoned with oregano, garlic, onion and feta. The gyro meat was good- typical of any gyro meat. The pita was really good. Almost crispy but chewy- you just have to try it. We also address the soup which was perfect for a cold evening. We ended with dessert and had the loukamades. They were mini beignets with a cinnamon syrup and a few crushed nuts. They were a hit! The place was clean and organized. There are a few tables, but this, in terms of ambiance, is a fast food strip mall location. The fries could have been a little crispier for my liking, but they were also seasoned well. I ordered the baklava for dessert and it was really good as well. My only complaint is that the service could have been better. The girl behind the counter (looked about high school age) didn't greet us when we walked in or when we approached the counter. This place is by far and away the best gyro spot in KC, KS or KCMO. I said it. Now take that for what it's worth. We're not really known as the food Mecca of the world. But let me tell you right now, this restaurant does not hold back on seasoning, they touch everything that goes on the plate with love. Genuinely. Even the pita with your hummus gets a dash of salt and spice. It may be a tad more expensive but I think it's well worth it. My only problem is with Nick the Greek, is that there isn't more of them!
