We came here out of desperation when we saw that Hog Island was closed (5 pm). Otherwise, I don't like paying more than $1 for oysters I shuck myself. We got sixteen, from Drakes Bay, at $2 apiece. They weren't particularly big, but briny to give a fresh taste. I'm not sure why it took thirty minutes for them to bring out oysters that they weren't shucking (and didn't really clean for us), but it did. At least the staff was friendly and chatty while we were waiting - and I spotted a pretty nice selection of liquors (read: scotch besides the usual Glenlivet/fiddich). They sure know how to capitalize on the great location, restricting parking to lodging or dine-in customers only with a majority of it being valet. Almost every seat in the restaurant offered a great view of the bay, and I overheard some people staying there talking about an outdoor firepit on the dock if you were so inclined to dine outside. This review is for the restaurant. So I think this place is deceptive. The exterior hides just how nice the restaurant really is on the inside. The menu for this place really focuses on their seafood. They have raw oysters on the half shell (4 types) as well as roasted/bbq oysters. Nick's cove also serves salads, fish and chips, hot dogs and a variety of grilled fish. I ordered the fried clams and 1/2 dozen oysters grilled in garlic butter. So first, they gave us some focaccia and butter. It was almost alright. The bread was a cold and bit hard/chewy, but flavorful. Then we asked for more and they gave us freshly made focaccia. It was so much softer. So much warmer. So much better. Then the lady dropped off the fried clams with lemon aoli. Some of the best fried clams I've ever had because it was crispy but not greasy and you can tell the clams were fresh. I just wish they gave me lemon wedges. Then the oysters came. They were 6 oysters on the half shell, grilled with garlic butter and served with a slice of boston brown bread. I loved the oysters because again, you can tell it was fresh. They didn't over cook the oysters either. I just wasn't too fond of the boston brown bread though because it was rather charred on the bottom. The atmosphere inside was rather good. Tables were covered with white cloth. Deer heads lined the walls. It was a combination of class and old time feel. But, i recommend outdoor seating (weather permitting). The experience is so much more enjoyable as you have a nice view of the surrounding environment. And, every breeze that passes through is like a reminder that you are away from worries and troubles. It's just so relaxing. The service is also great. They checked to see how we were doing. They refilled our drinks in a timely manner. Service with a smile. In short: the seafood is wonderful and fresh, the service is great, the atmosphere is enjoyable, the price is rather high but the food and experience is worth it. My buddy took me here last night for a 40th birthday present and we had a great time. First off, I saw that another reviewer said you could only have valet parking. Maybe he came on the weekend. We went on a Monday night and there was parking in another one of Nick's parking lots straight across the street, a 30 second walk. We loved all the vintage relics- old phone booth, truck, boat parts, deer on the wall, etc. We found the hostess, wait staff, and bus-woman to all be very polite and friendly. We started off with the oysters, they were wonderful. Totally fresh. As an appetizer, my friend had the Louie, which for some reason we thought shrimp was in the descriptor, but it was crab, but it was delicious nonetheless. My friend said she doesn't even like crab and she loved it. For my appetizer, I had the clam chowder, which had applewood smoked bacon, and was one of the more complex chowders I've had. It wasn't overly creamy, and I loved it. Then, I ordered the skirt steak, which came with cilantro, but I have an extreme hatred of cilantro (supposedly a genetic thing if it tastes strongly of soap, and it does to my mom and I). I ordered mine medium rare, and it was cooked correctly, it was savory and came with some sort of citrusy buttery sauce. After that, we had dessert. My friend had a brownie that was crispy on the outside but more doughy on the inside and ice cream. I had a hot chocolate espresso cake with ice cream and hazelnut. It was decadent. After dinner we took a walk on the boat dock, and talked about some day coming up for the cabins (we didn't spend the night, but should have due to food coma!). MUST GET the Original Tomales Bay BBQ'D Oyster!! Half a dozen fresh oysters that's BBQed to perfection...never overdone. It's made in their specialty BBQ sauce and garlic-parsley butter, which ironically makes for the perfect combination of savory but not overbearing. Even though I went with a friend, I didn't even bother sharing... I pretty much hoarded the whole plate! I could sip on its juices like soup! At $16, it's still on the pricier end, but that's usually what you get when you're within Marin. Original BBQ Oyster: 5/5 We went on a cold cold day, so got the Hot & Foggy beverage, which the menu described as "tuaca, hanger one spiced pear vodka, clove, orange." I never thought warm vodka was a good idea, and really, it STILL isn't. Although, it gave off a tasty, fresh pear aroma, the taste was the exact opposite- strong and pungent! Oh and REFRAIN from taking a huge whiff of the Hot & Foggy when sticking your nose in while you drink. It's exactly like taking a whiff of rubbing alcohol! Still, I felt the presentation was very unique. The drink came in a snifter glass, which is kept warm by laying it on top of glass of hot water. Pretty creative if you ask me. Hot & Foggy: 2/5 I definitely recommend their clam chowder. Clam chowder is one of those dishes that's hard to screw up, so if you really screw up...then you REALLY REALLY can't cook. But it's also one of those dishes that's quite difficult to perfect. To make a truly excellent clam chowder takes skill. I'd call it the clam chowder bell-curve, and Nick's Cove does a great job of beating the curve and hitting the 90th percentile. I loved it! Clam chowder: 5/5. I liked how the menu starts out with a little history on the front page, and I certainly loved the water-front ambiance. Their little fireplace is cute too. The only reason I would give this place a 3/5 instead of a 4/5 is its location right in the boonies of nowhere! Although one could argue that it's a nice get-away stop that's conveniently located right off Hwy 1, but the pricing is actually quite high considering that its outside lot and building looks like an old lodge. This is a review of the restaurant only. Their batter fried fish (fish and chips) was the best batter fried fish I've eaten by good measure. Unfortunately it was served up with industrial/prefab style fries and coleslaw that tasted like oily wood shaving (OK, maybe not that bad, but I really wish they'd just leave the coleslaw off the menu). The poke bowl I got had good, fresh, properly prepared tuna, but the rice was undercooked, they had dumped probably a shot glass full of soy sauce on the rice, the cut up cucumber with it was OK, but it was in big, awkward chunks and the purpose of the red sauce that was pour over all of it was beyond me. As far as I could tell, it had no taste. According to my spouse, on a scale of one to ten, the house coffee was an eight. My suggestion: It's a good place to stop for coffee and fried fish, but anything else on the menu should be suspect. read more

My wife and I have been going to Nick's Cove's restaurant for years and have loved it thru it's various phases. It has been a fancy restaurant with great food, wines, and staff while also being a community gathering place with good burgers and drinks. Then it became more casual with more modest food, but the great setting and ambience kept us coming back. Covid was really hard on everyone and when they finally re-opened we would nervously find the most distant outdoor tables to sit at and enjoy some much more casual bites. But with the new routine, having to order in front and having to stand around waiting for it to be ready while trying to hold the table you had waited for and claimed out back it became a lot less fun. The last straw in their race to the bottom was to decide to serve anything they could on their new shiny metal trays .They looked great, but there is nothing that can draw heat away from food better than full contact with metal, and In the time it takes till you pick it up and get back to your table your fish and chips (the few they give you ) are just lukewarm. The cool temperatures out there make it even worse. So the question we ask ourselves... "Even with the great views and ambience, is it worth $100 to have a chilled only moderately good lunch for 2 with no attempt to serve or allow for any needs of their customers on a not frequently cleaned picnic table, and where if you forget to bring or order anything you have to stand in line again while your food is getting even colder?" I have spoken with them on a couple of occasions, suggesting even putting food on paper plates or fiberglass trays, or letting me supply some plastic plates, but they are adamant that this is the way they want to do it and it they way they plan to keep it. It may work for them given the scarcity of good options on the shore, but it really is a shame. read more

Nick's Cove Restaurant offers a picture perfect setting for a romantic meal overlooking Tomales Bay. I have been visiting since its inception and have always enjoyed consistently good food and service. Of note are the perfectly creamy clam chowder, the oysters, cooked and raw, and great cocktails. On my most recent outing, I ordered a martini with Hendrick's gin. When asked how I wanted it served, I requested my drink dirty with an olive. At this point, my server advised me that Hendrick's gin was associated with cucumber and I should therefore have cucumber in my martini. First I thought huh? And then why not? After drinking my refreshing libation with beautifully cut cucumber slices afloat, I looked up Hendrick's gin on the internet and it is indeed infused with cucumbers. We tried the clam chowder and it should have been called potato chowder. The kale salad was excellent and big enough to share. The panzanella was good but small. The ahi was very good but sliced paper thin. The crab cakes were terrible; they were filled with bread crumbs and mushy. The Brussel sprouts were barely cooked and had no flavor. The boat shack is fantastic. Get $20 s'mores and roast the marshmallows in the oven, get self-serve food from the restaurant. It's cozy and warm, gorgeous views, you can hook up an iPod to the speakers. Would camp out there if I could. If you're sitting in the main restaurant, the best seats are by the window or even outside on the deck but they mainly have tables for couples there so a large party won't get the best view. They do a decent job of setting up mirrors so most diners can see the water but it's not like really facing the water. I was most shocked by the unappetizing oysters. I tried the premium platter, the BBQ oysters, and the bacon oysters in July. I have bbq'd oysters myself directly from Tomales Bay and enjoyed them so I don't know why the ones at this restaurant were so flavorless. I would not recommend them at all. The sea bass was dry. The curry mussels were good. And the salmon entree with beets was the only excellent dish I tried but I recommend sauce on the side. The desserts weren't good either. The strawberry pie filling was good but the dough was mealy and soggy. The chocolate pecan cake had a peanut butter taste. The espresso pot de creme had a gelatin texture. I can only recommend the s'mores for the experience (choose one of three fires for your marshmallows) and because the homemade graham crackers and marshmallows are actually tasty!! read more

This place is great! Located right along the beach, the view here is amazing if you've got a window table. Got here on a Monday night, it was a busy one. We sat at the bar and received great attentive service. We looked through the menu and saw some yummy sounding oysters. They did not disappoint! Last week my husband and I went to Nick's Cove to have lunch. We got 6 oysters, the bread with garlic butter, a glass of soda water, a green salad with chicken breast on top, and a bowl of Ciopinno. Our total for this meal was $84. For this price, I expected the food to be top-notch. It wasn't. The salad had butter lettuce, some almonds, and a lemon dressing. I did enjoy the dressing and it went well with the rest of the salad. The chicken breast had the same lemon dressing on it and was a little tough with some rubbery skin attached to it. The oysters tasted good, but there were only six of them and they were tiny. The Ciopinno had good seafood in it, but the broth was watery. The bread was ghastly - a greasy mess with the butter and garlic melted on top of it. I couldn't eat it as it was just a mess. My tombo tuna ceviche was unlike any I've ever had. And that's not a good thing. First, it was topped by guacamole.....huh? First, we started with raw oysters, two kinds. A local Pt. Reyes Miyagi and the Beausoleil from New Brunswick. Beausoleil means beautiful sun, which is close to how they tasted, fresh, crisp and refreshing. The Miyagi tasted stronger and salty, not my favorite compared to the Beausoleil. My husband chose two starters for his mains. The cheese plate was not up to the Girl & the Figs standards, it was nice though and we our favorite was the Blue Cheese which I believe was from Bleating Heart Farmstead. His second starter was the incredible, generous and delicious Angus Beef Tartare. It was topped with an rich egg yolk from their croft. My choice was a roasted wild Steelhead Salmon which I devoured every bite. I loved the Sea Beans and Artichokes and mustard sauce. The service was excellent and helpful and friendly. I would like my 20 dollar tip back on a bill of $109- that was payed before the meal was served....this at a window out side not knowing I would have to pick up the meals myself as I would the 2 lemonade drinks . 29.00 dollars for a crab roll that was tasteless and the chips were stale. the BBQ oysters were under cooked with terrible sauce (red and verde) and much to small. Fantastic drive, fantastic ambience and the food is fan... okay. We drove for over an hour from San Francisco, through Petaluma, through some amazing farmland then along a windy road to the Cove. It was an amazing drive and on a beautiful day, I highly recommend it. When we arrived at Nick's Cove, the road outside was a madhouse with two gals parking cars for the guests and people coming in and out of the joint. We went to a lot across the street to park when one of the girls came across and asked if we were guests staying at the cottages, we said no, she then said we couldn't park there. OK, my wife went in to get our table while I went to find parking. As I came out of the lot, I noticed that the Cove had complimentary valet, so I used that. The same girl gave me a ticket stub then proceeded to park the car in the same spot of the same lot... okay. Inside it was busy but not the gong show outside was, there were still plenty of tables free even though the hostess said it was a half hour wait without reservations, luckily we had one. I ordered the Arnold Palmer (1/2 unsweetened ice tea, 1/2 lemonade) and it was spectacular, the best in a while. We ordered some fresh oysters and the Clam Chowder. Both were good, the soup was a touch watery but the flavor was okay, while the oysters were fresh. For mains, we had the Fish & Chips and the Dungeness Crab Mac & Cheese. The fish was greasy and tasted a little bland while the Mac & Cheese was quite decadent, so much so, we could only eat half. Afterwards, we walked the pier to watch the fog come over the hills and take some snaps and then enjoyed another magnificent drive home in the sun. While the voyage to and the ambience of Nick's Cove is worth it, the food is good but not outstanding. I had my birthday lunch there yesterday. Beautiful surroundings, food presentation lovely, but not overdone. Service, very good, seemed ok to make special food allergy requests. Nick's Cove has weathered in to its environment nicely. It was over the top "done" when it was new: "vintage" decor seemed too new and brassy to be believable. More like a Disney ride... but a little fading and touches of weathered moss on the signage has helped Nick's fit right in to the Tomales Bay aura. What I love - the gourmet s'mores to go boxes, complete with sturdy roasting sticks, artisan graham crackers and marshmallows, and really good chocolate squares. TRUFFLE FRIES - omg. Feeds 4 easily...perfection to the bottom of the bowl. The daily menu virtually guaranteeing that nothing is "out" or "off" - all is fresh daily. All food was on point in service...hot was hot, cold was cold, frosted glasses, attention to detail...mostly. What I didn't love - ok, so this may sound trite, but if I'm going to pay $18 for mac&cheese with crab, less crab cuz allergic, I don't want it served in a chipped terrine. (Trader Joe's frozen mac for $2 is almost on par in flavor, and I can put it in my own chipped terrine absolutely free) Clam chowder...wish I could have had a small cup as a starter. Investing in the whole bowl was a bit much. Also while full of clams, it was not the best I've had. Not very creamy...more potato based. While I cannot complain about service - it was technically a "10", it was mostly just that, no extra friendly anywhere. We notified in advance that it was a birthday event, and received NOTHING special - not even a "happy birthday" from the waiter, or hostess. Did y'all used ta work at The Gap or sumpfin'? Hint: Friendly is always in fashion. I will come back to Nick's, but likely for cocktails and appetizers next time, or to pick up a box of delicious s'mores. Living here in Marin, it's hard to throw a pebble and not hit incredible quality ingredients. What one does with those ingredients should be witnessed at Nick's Cove! One of the great day-date trips is that up the coast of Highway 1. If you venture north past the various oyster companies, you'll eventually arrive at the little roadside gem of Nick's Cove. Originally a hangout for fisherman & hunters back in the 1930s, this has become a culinary treasure trove filled with the finest Marin ingredients. I'm usually an oyster purist, but their Oysters 'Nick-erfeller' with tarragon & pernod are knee-buckling! I love their Local Rock Cod & Chips with perfectly crisp batter & housemade slaw. Their House Ground Burger with Pt Reyes blue cheese is not to be missed! We also love to share their grilled romaine with anchovy dressing or locally-raised goat meatballs. On a different trip the Loch Duart Salmon & Wood-fired Dungeness Crab (while in-season) were truly delish. What I really love about Nick's Cove is that they do food right without charging exorbitant prices. I also appreciate their diverse wine list and interesting cocktails..I'm typically a wine girl, but after tasting my date's Manhattan with stout syrup I could have been a bourbon convert. We always go on the fly and decide to drop-in after our coastal drive. The tranquil waterfront views of Tomales Bay offer sightings of sea lions, river otters and other wildlife. I wanted to try this place and made my family drive an hour each way just to come here for lunch, which they still complain about. The food was good but just not worth the long drive for them. It was also a bit scary coming because the roads are super windy and it seems like it's in the middle of nowhere with no internet service. When we finally got there for lunch, we had had no problem getting a table as it was quite empty around 1 on a weekday. The kids mac and cheese with vegetables added was the best kids meal little A had the whole trip and we enjoyed the crab cakes and clam chowder too. I'd come here if you're close by but not if it's as out of the way for you as it was for us. Wish we had more time to enjoy the nice views and quiet surroundings. read more

BBQ Oysters. Thats all I need to say. Of all the ones I have had, no one compares to this place. I tried their Oysters Nickafeller, which were great, but next to the BBQ (with garlic and butter!) nothing really could compare. Brisket sandwich was on point! I took it to go (COVID) but I think that sandwich may have been even more wonderful in person. I went one week ago, I've almost driven the hour back no less than three times so far. I forsee more BBQ oysters and an amazing view in my near future. Prices are comparable, for the location (far away) I did kind of expect something a bit more reasonable- however, I am from New England and this location reminds me too much of VT or NH, and that's why I feel that way (that's how it is up there, the deeper you go into the woods the better the finds and much cheaper). Based on the MASSIVE crowd, no one cared that this place was a bit of a walk from the city. I certainly didn't care. If you go, I suggest trying it all! You wont be disappointed. read more
