Celebrated my birthday here with some girlfriends. I'd been to Nicks on State and returned for the butter cake, amongst other things. From the apps to mains and dessert, everything was very good to excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed my Chilean sea bass, and the sautéed greens that accompanied it were delicious and the mashed potatoes smooth and well seasoned. The butter cake was on point and wow, the carrot cake was the best I've had since Truluck's. It's a bummer the carrot cake is seasonal, but maybe also a good thing for my waistline! Service was friendly and attentive. The only complaint was a friend's sides were not hot, so she sent those back and replacements were provided. One of our local favorites, since Covid, when it was our go-to restaurant for enjoying better takeout. The menu features six starters, priced from $12-$23. Six market salads, $10-$23. Nine house specialties, from the buttermilk fried chicken, $29, to the center-cut filet, $55. A favorite: the bistro plate, a petite filet, on garlic toast, with a petite bistro salad and cup of the soup of the day. Just $29. They also offer six sandwiches and burgers. We went for the petite bistro salad, $10, green beans, and the baby back pork ribs, $37. The portions are large, so we split. The ribs, asadvertised, do fall off the bone. They come with mashed potatoes, but you can opt for French fries. Service is efficient, friendly, and responsive. The green beans weren't very good. They removed the charge from the bill. A good selection of wines by the glass, from $13-$30. We brought an older Wine. Corkage is just $15! The atmosphere is lively. ask for the outdoor dining during better weather. Have been to this place several times and it never disappoints! The food is delicious and the service is really good. I love the kale & quinoa salad and the bacon deviled eggs as appetizers. The fillet was cooked perfectly, and you can substitute the baked potato for mashed potatoes or fries. The warm butter cake with vanilla ice cream is truly a must! TL;DR All in all, a very disappointing experience and I probably won't be back. If you go, definitely order the Thai salad and warm butter cake. I had high expectations for this dinner and came here with a group from work. The ambiance was okay though we were seated next to a window so it got a bit chilly from the patio even though the window wasn't open. The service was a bit slow, but good enough. We started off with their brussel sprouts which were on special which were undercooked and tough as well as the asparagus fries which were made with the larger stalk-type of asparagus and therefore the bottom 3rd wasn't edible due to the thick woodiness and stringiness texture. For entrees, we had the sea bass, blackened fish sandwich, scottish salmon, and the thai veggie salad with ribeye steak. The steak for my salad was missing and the waitress didn't seem to even know the steak add-on was an option on the menu when the salad arrived so the steak had to be prepared while everyone else had their dishes at the table. This resulted in the rest of the table eating their entrees and then waiting for me to eat once my steak arrived. I only ate a few bites since I felt bad (and didn't want everyone to watch me eat) and took the rest home which was a huge bummer because it was actually delicious when it was fresh and less so as leftovers. This place is amazing! Possibly my favorite San Diego date night spot at this point. When we'd come here previously, I had the French onion soup (to die for), and the chicken piccata which was good but didn't blow my mind. This time I tried the bistro plate instead and it was absolutely the right choice. The portion size was perfect to leave room for dessert, and the variety was perfect: mini filet mignon served over arugula + garlic toast, a really delicious mixed salad, and a cup of the soup of the day (I came on Saturday in hopes it would be the French onion soup again - and it was! Yay!). My partner had the ribs (not his first time), and loveddd them as always. They are an honestly huge portion size, so you may end up taking some home, but I expect he'll be asking to come back for more soon, haha. They also came with salad and mashed potatoes, all of which he said was really delicious. The butter cake is insane. My partner described it as top 5 desserts he's ever had (and we both have sweet teeth). The texture was just perfect - a nice caramelized outside with a chew to it, gooey but not too dense inside, and paired with the vanilla ice cream and the tartness of the berries...divine. My first time to this location but not my first time to Nick's restaurants at other locations. All Nick's locations serve solidly good food with good sized portions enough for leftovers. This location has two Nick's restaurants one is on South and the other Del Mar I mistakenly went to wrong one the host corrected me and directed me there. Both restaurants are popular and booked solid with long wait times 1.5-2 hours so reservations are recommended. Our waiter welcomed us, he promptly took our drink order and asked our party of four if we're celebrating anything, we're celebrating 40 years of friendship. The fried asparagus is perfectly plump and lightly coated with a side of ranch sauce and deviled eggs I asked for the bacon crumbles served on the side are solidly good appetizers. The cioppino broth has a nice flavor and not too thick more soupy is served with a round sourdough bread loaf. Chicken piccata is served with two large fillets and side of mashed potatoes and salad. Petite filet steak is cooked perfectly tender is served with side of salad and soup of the day a creamy French onion soup - this is one of the smaller sized entree item no leftovers while my other friends all had to take home leftovers. After dinner while clearing our table our waiter asked if we wanted to order desserts we opted not to. He casually placed down some spoons on our table then he comes back to surprise us with a small round chocolate cake on the house as celebration of our friendship. That is so nice of him! We absolutely love Nick's! We are always able to be seated almost immediately, and the service is always excellent. The only thing that is better than the service is the food. The ambiance a d decor are great. DRINKS: In general, all of the drinks are not my favorite. I tend to prefer sweeter cocktails, and Nick's cocktails are good, but for me, not sweet enough or too tart for me. I still order them but have never craved any particular cocktail. Coco rita - Very good...probably my favorite drink on the menu, but that's not saying a lot because every drink I have had at Nick's has been good but not great/amazing Cucumber Collins - Okay, but I would not get it again Nick's Mai Thai - Also good but not a cocktail I would order again. FOOD: Spicy Thai Salad with chicken & Avocado - Probably my favorite salad ever. You cannot go wrong with this salad, and if you go to Nick's, you MUST get it. Ribeye Melt - This sandwich never misses, and when I was pregnant, I would constantly crave it. It might actually be the best sandwich in the entire world, and I am not even exaggerating. Asparagus Fries - These fries are very good, but without fail, everytime we order them the temperature is far far far too hot. I wish they could fix that. Buttercake - I have tried the buttercake, and to me, the buttercake at Nick's is one of the few things that is unremarkable. Stopped in for my first time this past weekend and honestly really enjoyed it. I am from San Diego but live in Los Angeles now and this place really reminds me a lot of Honor Bar and Hillstone. It's a really high-end traditional American cuisine in a really bright and open space. The menu has a lot of great options on it and our server was very polite. It's inside a shopping center and there is a multi story free parking garage attached. For my dinner, I chose the Classic Ribeye Melt and thought it was fantastic. The Parmesan crusted bread was one of the selling points for me and I thought it was honestly really good. All of their drinks were great and I already want to come back again soon to try more items. Came here one day because my friend was visiting from Michigan and we love going to Nick's on State with my husband and they didn't have any dinner reservations open so we thought let's give their other location a try I will say service was amazing on par or even better than Carlsbad we had a great time with all of the wait staff. You were all very attentive. We gave him a run for the money with the things that we asked for extra sauce and little things like that they were Phenomenal and I do love this plaza for a few reasons. Parking is easy. There's other shops here that I like overall a great experience. One thing I would say that's missing here that they do have at the Carlsbad location is the Carlsbad location just feels more luxurious inside. I love the dark interior design there I feel like that's kind of lacking at this one. The inside here is very small very crisp white walls. Don't get me wrong. It looks beautiful. It's just it doesn't look as romantic or date night like as the Carlsbad location and since my husband and I were hosting a friend. It didn't have to be romantic. It's just if you have a preference you might want to go to the Carlsbad one but honestly, we'll keep frequenting whichever one is more convenient that day. Rihanna, usual favorite dishes, including the spinach, artichoke dip, the deviled eggs, their fried chicken with mashed potatoes and their prime rib dip sandwich those are our heavy hitters like when we come here those are our favorite things to order. Stopped by Nicks for a quick lunch with a friend and ordered their Bistro plate for $29 that consisted of a petite filet mignon, topped with steak butter served on garlic toast, petite bistro salad, and a cup of soup that was spicy lentil and vegetable. The service is top notch as always and the steak was cooked perfectly and just the right size for a lunch. The soup was also delicious, could have come out a bit warmer but I won't dock any points for that. The lentils were cooked to the right consistency and the spice in the soup just elevated everything. Have been coming here for years but never took the time to write a review till today. I've been coming to Nick's Del Mar since it opened, and it's always been one of my go-to spots. The food is consistently great, and the service has always matched -- until this last visit. Unfortunately, our waitress was noticeably rude and snappy. She rushed us to order, and when I politely asked if our dishes could be paced out, her response was, "I've been working here for three years -- I know!" Instead of making us feel welcome, she made us feel like a burden for even asking. When we requested extra dressing, it felt like we were bothering her. It got to the point where we didn't even want to ask for more water because we didn't want to deal with her attitude again. Oddly, the only time she was friendly was when she dropped off the check. I'm hoping this was just a bad day, but in hospitality, attitude matters. I still love Nick's and will be back -- but I do hope the staff is reminded that customer service is just as important as the food. read more

The tuna tartare was the highlight and loved the wontons that came with it. The spinach and artichoke dip was also good. Same restaurant family, and easy to confuse the two if you are coming from the parking lot or garage. South of Nick's is the Mexican kitchen and bar. Nick's Del Mar is all about classic American comfort. In terms of ambiance, the restaurant features a beautifully designed space with a glass-enclosed dining room. There is a sizable indoor-outdoor island bar and a heated patio. Overall, the atmosphere is welcoming and polished. But, goodness me, this place gets very busy and a bit loud. Overall, I find the team there to be quite attentive and offering mostly friendly service. The menu offers a mix of comfort-driven dishes and fresh, high-quality ingredients. The deviled eggs were an absolute disappointment, however. The bacon was a miss, and did not taste right given the delicate flavors of the egg. But other signature items on the menu include the asparagus fries, pan-seared salmon, baby back ribs and Chilean sea bass. Hands down, my absolute favorite item on the menu is the Original Ribeye Melt. The sandwich is bold in flavor and indulgent in every single bite. The sliced ribeye is both tender and stacked -- it's a hefty sandwich. The melted Swiss cheese and sweet-savory red wine onions, all drizzled with a tangy mustard bacon sauce, perfectly rounds out the flavor. All that, and Nick's opted to add crispy Parmesan sourdough.
