I have been wanting to go here for a while and finally made it! This place is super cute, we sat inside but will have to come back for the outside vibes once it's nicer out! The service was really good as well. For an appetizer we got the crab rangoon and omg they were amazing. They're small and light and crispy, perfect for sharing! My friend got the Pad See Ew and I got one of the chefs specials which was a pumpkin yellow curry with chicken and grilled shrimp. Both were amazing and had a kick but not too spicy! Had just unpacked in our Airbnb in Mexican war Streets neighborhood & we were both hungry. But- it's after 8 pm on a Thursday night in Pittsburgh, and this city closes up early! Plus, we are vegetarian- And PGH loves their meat. We found this place, located in what used to be a house on a lively street of bars /restaurants/ cafes. The menu we received included a "Vegetables" or "Vegetarian" section - it was towards the final page, but it is there, and we did NOT ask for it, so it's the standard menu. [We can't find it online, and some older reviewers seem to have had problems in the past.] I ordered the PaRam Tofu, crispy tofu with steamed vegetables and peanut sauce. My husband ordered a Basil tofu dish with rice- we ordered both as medium spice. They were both perfection. My tofu was crispy, fresh, not greasy. The peanut sauce was crazy good. The green beans, broccoli, baby corn, etc - exquisite. Not overcooked. Not undercooked. I could taste & savor the fresh flavors. My husband's tofu dish was also fresh & well balanced, with an abundance of Thai basil. We were very hungry, but still had leftovers that made a second meal for us. Very popular Thai spot in Pittsburgh. They have multiple locations as well, including one in downtown but I went to try this spot in the North Side. It is really good but quite expensive. I got to try their chicken satay, Tom kha soup, pad see ew with tofu, and Thai custard. Now, the Tom kha soup I didn't have very much of, but it was decent. Lots of coconut milk to balance the spice (not too spicy at all), but I'm just not really used to this flavor. The chicken satay, though, was really good. Very lean chicken grilled perfectly with a nice sauce. Definitely recommend. As for the mains, the pad see ew was also very tasty. Quite noodle heavy here, which I don't mind. The vegetables are fresh, and the tofu was nicely cooked. Definitely recommend as well. Finally, the Thai custard. It was also excellent. Interestingly, there's a hint of chocolate as well or something of the sort besides just coconut milk. But still, very good, very creamy, and just a nice dessert. All in all, I really like this spot. They have awesome outdoor seating if you are able to catch it (indoors is great too with all the nice paintings and such but more crowded). Portions are big, but the prices are pretty high as well. The waitress checked on us only for food order and check. We had to get the busboy to bring us more water, he was not happy about it. She came by maybe fifteen minutes after we sat down. Waited over 45 minutes for VERY bland food. The pad thai lacked flavor and all the ingredients melded together. We ordered level three spice and probably got -3. The tom kha ga just tasted like warm coconut milk with cabbage in it. While the food wasn't inedible, it just wasn't good or worth it. To top it off we were sat in the back room and it was incredibly smoky with grease smoke from the kitchen, ventilation was poor. Honestly, I have no clue how the smoke alarm didn't go off, it felt very unsafe in there. What really got me was the 20% automatic gratuity charge that's not listed anywhere on the menu. The experience from the waitress only really warranted bare minimum tip (in my opinion 15%). Basically we were oxygen deprived for about an hour and a half to receive poor service and tasteless food and hit with a charge for just being there. read more

Consistently excellent. All the various Nicky's Thai Kitchen locations are great, but this time we picked up takeout from the North Side location. The online ordering experience worked well-enough, and everything in our order was very well packaged to survive the ride home. The pickup experience was super easy as well. In terms of the food, it was fantastic. The fresh rolls are some of the best in town, with good portioning and lots of aromatic (and decorative) basil coming through. I get the impression that the rice paper around the rolls is doubled up so the wrapping is a little thick, but that seems to allow for really tightly wrapped rolls. The papaya salad was generous, with plenty of vegetables and bright flavors (though I might drizzle some fish sauce on the leftovers). The tom yum soup was served in a fairly large container (32 oz) and really packed with vegetables, above and beyond what I've seen elsewhere. We had ordered the vegetable option, but it was still impressive. My only comment on the soup is that serving it with a squeeze of lime really elevates the dish. The stir-fries and curries were all flavorful and also filled with crisp vegetables as well. All told, Nicky's is great. They run a solid operation offering bold flavors and fresh ingredients, and they seem to make a point of offering a large number of vegetable forward dishes. Highly recommended. read more

This spot is really cute on western! I love that it's a restaurant in a house. I really only got pickup so next time I will have to sit down and really try more food here. The staff seemed very nice and pickup was ready pretty quickly. I think I got too much spice in my food that I couldn't really taste anything. I got a medium pad see ew and it was so spicy I couldn't really get a taste for the noodles. The pad Thai was pretty good. Next time I'll definitely get a mild. Best Thai in the burgh, and if you don't agree, the Crab Rangoons alone will knock anyone's socks off who loves a good Rangoon. Pumpkin curry forever, and if you're going there to eat in person and get a drink, definitely get yourself a cocktail. They're indulgent and the presentation is art. The lychee the mist -- I personally don't drink, so I appreciate their tea selection. They have great hojicha and roasted rice teas, which are my favorite. CAVEAT: prices have increased significantly and we can now only indulge in our favorite Thai a couple times a year. Great lunch experience at Nicky's Thai Kitchen! There is only street parking available but we were easily able to find a spot. Because of staffing, the back patio wasn't open for seating. When we came in on a Saturday afternoon before the Pitt game we were seated right away. Staff were all friendly and welcoming. I was pleasantly surprised that the lunch entrees all came with the choice of a soup of the day or salad. I got the chicken and rice soup which was delicious! All of our entrees were amazing. The appetizer sampler we got was delicious as well. The Thai iced coffee was sweet and tasted great. Prices were very reasonable. On my day off, I decided to try the downtown location on Penn Ave. first of all, the restaurant is cute and at a great location. And the service was great! The server was sweet and attentive. But unfortunately, I was disappointed by the food! I had high expectations due to the accolades on their website. But the food fell short and didn't meet my expectations. I ordered the Pad See Ew and it was primarily flavored with chili oil only. It lacked soy and oyster sauce. The friend spring rolls were a disappointment too. Super cozy and quaint vibes. Outdoor dining space is second to none in the summer (not open in the winter). BYOB establishment with super reasonable corking fees ($5 for wine, $1 for beer). FYI; there is an awesome winery across the street (Refucilo, but be sure to check their hours as they are limited). Been coming here for YEARS and it's been super consistent and delicious. Had to change the entree to a "to-go" order because 45 minutes after ordering it hadn't arrived and we had theatre tickets. Had a green curry noodle dish and it was tasty when I ate it the following day. Service was very poor. Only half the tables were filled, and it took forever to place the order, longer for the food to arrive. Seemed like all the other tables in the place were having the same problem. My first time at this Nicky's location! Parking was tough during lunch. Service was ok. Food is always great, but I am concerned that they use chicken broth in their vegetarian dishes. My noodles were amazing! However, when your body isn't used to eating certain things it isn't happy with you when you surprise it with some good old chicken broth!! I've always enjoyed the food at other Nicky's Thai Kitchen locations and stopped by this one since we were in the area. Massaman Curry (4/5 stars) - Great taste, a large portion of curry with a good amount of chicken and potatoes. Thai iced tea (2/5 stars) - Way too sweet. Tall glass looks nice but is hard to mix. I was basically forcing it down due to how cloyingly sweet it was. Ambiance (3/5 stars) - Not much to say here. It's a pretty small indoor seating area. The wooden tables and small room gives a vibe like dining in someone's house. Why 2-star review? While the food was good as usual, I hadn't noticed until now that a gratuity of 20% is already included in the receipt, which isn't mentioned ahead of time. Normally I'd be fine tipping 20% anyway, but the problem is the receipt also lists "suggestion tips" of 18-25% IN ADDITION TO the included 20% gratuity (picture of receipt included for reference). I've eaten at Nicky's Thai many times. I usually frequent the location downtown. There are two things that I notoriously get from this restaurant and that's the green curry and fried wontons. I enjoy the lunch special because it offers both plus a lunch side salad. Green curry is a Thai dish that I love and eat quite frequently. Came here on a busy Thursday (post-Christmas) eve before heading downtown to Heinz Hall to check out the Illusionists! We were greeted immediately by the host and were seated immediately. Make sure to close the doors behind you! This spot has a very cozy, homey vibe. Our server was exceptionally friendly and attentive, and made sure to refill our waters (without ice). Wonder how we knew we didn't want ice (bc Asian). After a few minutes with the menu, we went with the Pad Thai with Tofu (spice level 4/5) and a Yellow Curry Fried Rice with Chicken (spice level 3/5). I think 4/5 is solid if you can handle spice, but this would be my limit. Both the dishes were served piping hot within a few minutes, and hit quite the spot. Drizzling the fried rice with the chopped chilies and fish sauce was the icing on the cake, so-to-speak. Hands down the best Thai food we have ever had. We were in Pittsburgh for a couple of days and went to Nicky's. The service was attentive, decor lovely and food absolutely delicious. We ordered Tofu with peanut sauce, beyond delish and duck with bok choy. The flavor on the duck dish was superb, it had anise undertones and came with a TON of vegetables. There were so many veggies leftovers on the duck dish, we stored them in our hotel refrigerator and brought them home and ate them the next day! read more

This place is incredible, I don't understand the negative reviews. Our curry was creamy and spicy and delicious. The dumplings were awesome (and that dipping sauce was banging). Food is delicious. Unfortunately, their habit of not giving you what you ordered makes it impossible to enjoy! I used to dine in, then when the pandemic hit, I started ordering food directly through their website for pick-up. I noticed my orders would often contain different ingredients than what was listed than when I selected it online. Pointing it out, or asking for a refund, or waiting for a new order ensued. Eventually, after several times of this happening at the downtown location, I discovered the reason was because their online menu was allegedly out-of-date - the items I was ordering no longer existed. Okay, so you would expect them to call and explain that, or just cancel and refund the order, right? Nope -- their standard practice was to just... give me a different meal than what I ordered. I.e. Ordered the Bangkok Bay, and that no longer exists, so they would just make and give me the Chili Mango Scallop with NO explanation. Eventually, they seemed to update their menu, and I was able to order things they actually make and get what I ordered. Fast forward to today. I go to order from the North Side location... and see, "Oh, they have the Bangkok Bay on the menu! I haven't seen it there for years! I thought they didn't make it anymore... But, no, they wouldn't take it down and then put it back up if they didn't make it anymore, right...?" I decided to risk it and order the Bangkok Bay. Big mistake. I show up to pick it up, look in the bag... and can see it's the Chili Mango Scallop! The fact that they do this at 2 locations - downtown and North Side - means this is standard practice: Just give the customer something they didn't order! How can anyone think that's a logical or good idea?! What if I was allergic to the cashews (they come on the Chili Mango Scallop but not the Bangkok Bay)?! I can't fathom how they came up with this plan! It's unfair, and it's absurd! I should have demanded a refund, but I decided to just take it and eat it, since I like this one, too. Mistake #2. Instead of being topped with the cashews like it says online, it was topped with peanuts. I'm done. For good this time. This is the most nonsensical restaurant I've EVER encountered. read more

Love their decorations of the outdoor seating but can't say much about the food we ordered. The seafood Hotpot I got was not even warm. They could have boiled it before putting it in the hotpot. The weather that day was not cold that the hotpot would have cooled down that fast from the time our server brought it out to our table. I also ordered the fish basil crispy tilapia fillets, stir-fried with garlic, basil, bell peppers, yellow onions, egg plant, green bean, bamboo slice, spicy basil sauce. I requested very spicy but it wasn't. One coworker got the pineapple fried rice with chicken and the rice was undercooked. When he made a complaint they took it back and redid it but we don't think they replaced it bc it came back still undercooked. They will charge you a gratuity so keep that in mind.. read more
