Red Orchid is a solid option for Thai food in the North Hills! I've had it a few times now as a takeout meal (I've admittedly not dined in their dining room yet), and my meals have been consistently good! I've tried a few noodle dishes, including Pad Thai and Pad See Yew, and my husband has tried a few of the curry and rice dishes. The space is small and cozy and tucked into a quiet strip mall building off of Babcock, and they have a pickup area for takeout orders when you first walk in. The portions are good and they have a wide spectrum of food options on their menu! I'd like to try dining in at some point in the future. In full transparency, I will say that I was a bit put off when I last picked up my order because both the waiting area and my view into the kitchen did not appear to be very clean, and I had to ask twice for the order that I'd placed over the phone. That said, it could have been an off night, so perhaps take that with a grain of salt. It's currently not my first choice for Thai food in the area (it's a personal journey to find one's go-to takeout spots, IMO!), but still, it's a good option if you're nearby! read more

My favorite Thai restaurant has always been Thai Place in Wexford. I always enjoyed interacting with the wonderful family owners. Since they closed last year, I've been searching for a new Thai Restaurant that makes Pad Thai as well as Thai Place. I'm so glad I found the Red Orchid on Babcock Blvd in the north hills of Pittsburgh. I haven't been there enough to get to know the owners yet but it's a family owned local business, which is always a priority for me when choosing a local business. The kitchen is right behind the front entrance. As soon as you enter, it is like stepping into a warm cloud of layered aromas -- sweet, spicy, herbal, and savory all at once. cilantro, Peppery Thai basil, Citrusy, floral lemongrass and sharp, green kaffir lime leaves are just some of the wonderful aromas greeting you! We all ordered Pad Thai which was yummy. The order came with a free order of Crab Rangoon which also was excellent. We haven't tried any of the other dishes yet but I'll be sure to follow-up and let you know but I'm confident everything here is fantastic!! read more

For my 100th time eating Red Orchid, I got the Kao Soy with chicken - lvl 6 spice. A delicious bowl of egg noodles swimming in spicy curry. Topped with crispy fried onions, crunchy egg noodles, and red onion. Honestly one of the best things on the menu. Overall, Red Orchid is still my go-to Thai restaurant. Food is always great. There's free parking in the lot in front of the strip of stores and gender-specific restrooms down the hall beyond the host station (the ones near our table in the dining room were for staff). We were seated and served quickly. The food was okay; we found that a level 2/10 was plenty spicy food our tastes. The curry was thinner than I prefer and had a very high tofu to vegetable ratio but low topping to rice ratio. Too much to eat in one sitting but half was not enough for a full meal, so we got the spring rolls, which had a dipping sauce that was different than others I've tried. While in Pittsburgh we were meeting a friend for dinner. We wanted Thai food and fortunately for us our first choice restaurant was closed that night, because we ended up at Red Orchid instead.... We started with some spring rolls and the Tom Yum soup with veggies. The spring rolls came out piping hot and crisp. The Tom Yum was full of veggies and had a great kick to it. Every Thai restaurant does things differently, I will say this place uses a bit more fish sauce than I am used to. Not bad by any means, but just more. For our entrees we ordered Thai fried rice, pad Kee Mao and the Sweet and Sour chicken. The noodles in the pad Kee mao were the authentic flat thick noodles and were the perfect level of spicy. The Thai Fried Rice and the Sweet and sour chicken were also on point! This was a gem of a restaurant and I am so glad we tried it. Tucked away in an unassuming strip, Red Orchid has a wonderful ambiance with unpretentious and tasteful Thai-style decor. Lunch is so affordably priced and everything we had here was very good. I ordered the Massaman curry and it came with a simple but comforting soup and the curry itself was just the right consistency. They have all of the usual Thai entrees and appetizers, as well as a few desserts you may not find in other places (like oreo mousse cakes as well as boba tea). I tried the pad see ew with tofu and Thai custard for my meal. Overall, the food is solid. I've had better pad see ew, but this was still a flavorful meal. The portion was decent, but being a bit more expensive than in other places, I thought it would also be a little larger. They are generous with their addition of vegetables. There are pieces of broccoli, cabbage, and carrots included. Decent amount of tasty sauce. Nicely sized tofu chunks which were flavorful (note that beef, seafood, and shrimp all come at an up charge for proteins). Thai custard is my go-to Thai dessert, and this one was pretty good (again, not the best I've had but good for the North Hills). Some parts of the rice were hardened and difficult to chew. But overall, they made a tasty and balanced custard (a bit on the eggy side) with a fair portion of rice. Once again, though, it's more expensive than at nearly any other Thai place. All in all, this is a good choice for Thai food near Ross or the North Hills. Their prices are moderately more expensive than at other locations around Pittsburgh, though, and the food is just pretty standard but satisfying when you're craving Thai. read more

Stopped in for an early dinner on a weekend and were the first people in the dining area. Ample parking out front, in the strip of which this restaurant is a part. But definitely mango and I am not complaining. I also had the fried tofu appetizer which was bland and smelled like a donut. But piping hot and a nice sauce although not quite as peanut flavored as I had hoped. Wife had the spring roll appetizer with shrimp which was fresh and delicious. For dinner I had the roast duck soup and it was very good. Lot's of duck, baby bokchoy and noodles. The broth was good but not great and I ended up not drinking all of it. Bathroom was passable. My husband and I entered the restaurant on a weekday evening, and an employee soon walked us to a table in the dining room. The menu was not printed on paper and instead had to be downloaded via a barcode. Their menu included over a dozen appetizers such as spring rolls and potstickers, several soups, several salads, several fried rices and noodles, several curry entrees, several desserts, and several beverages. Our waiter brought out our appetizers and entrees after reasonable waits. He also brought us a large bottle of water so we could refill our glasses. At the end of the meal, he thanked us and told us to have a good night. Here are my reviews for the foods: Thai samosa - 4 stars - This pastry was filled with sweet potatoes, Yukon potatoes, carrots, and peas. The sweet potatoes had the strongest flavor. On the side was a sweet plum sauce. Tulip dumplings - 4 stars - These dumplings contained ground chicken wrapped with wonton dough. They were steamed and served with ginger soy sauce. My husband ate this appetizer, and he said that he enjoyed it. Green curry dinner - 4 stars - Green curry was mixed with coconut milk, broccoli, green beans, bell peppers, eggplants, and basil. I had requested that the level of spiciness be medium, and it tasted very hot to me. In the future, I will order a spiciness of mild. This entree, though, was flavorful, and it contained an abundance of fresh vegetables. Crab fried rice - 3 stars - This fried rice appeared to include real crab meat, eggs, carrots, scallions, and onions. This rice dish was not my husband's favorite, and he ate only half of it. A friend once told me that there's no such thing as bad Thai food - I'd have to disagree with that, but when it comes to Red Orchid it's irrelevant because the food is fantastic. We've gotten take-out a couple of times. All appropriate precautions related to the pandemic are in place. I went to the restaurant and ordered take-out. Overall, I was happy. The male who took my order and provided it to me was a grump, but the food was tasty. I got basil chicken at a 7/10 spice level. The sauce was excellent and the portion was appropriate for a lunch order. I did hit one or 2 pieces of chicken that had more of a gamey flavor, but I would go back. Imagine our delight when we realized Red Orchid delivers! YAHOO! Perfect for a "ain't gonna budge off the couch rainy Sunday" dinner option. We pulled up the YELP "order online" option and received our order delivered hot, fresh, within 30 minutes, and with a smile. The driver will call you to let you know they have arrived which is another great feature of this service. We ordered the Lad Nah Dinner which is stir fried wide rice noodles with broccoli, mushrooms, baby com, carrot, and topped with light gravy that was reminiscent of chicken gravy to be honest. The noodles sort of stick together a little bit because they deliver them in a separate box (which is thoughtful but they need some sauce or something so they don't turn into a big gelatinous mass of noodle). Pretty good though I would order it spicier next time - bump it up to a three from a one spice level. We also got some Yum Ma Kua which is grilled eggplant mixed with ground chicken, lettuce, red onion, scallion and tomato and comes with a spicy lime sauce and it is absolutely delicious. It's the perfect balance of acidic lime and layers of spice. The eggplant is on the mushy side but we loved it. The Tom Kha Soup was very good too. It's a soup made with coconut milk, flavored with galangal, lemongrass, mushroom, cabbage, carrots and it arrived garnished with fresh scallion and cilantro. I ordered mine vegetarian but would recommend ordering chicken or shrimp next time. It was a tad bland with just steamed veggies in it. We also got an order of the Green Curry Dinner, a side of Steamed Mixed Vegetable, and for dessert, the Thai Pumpkin Custard. Their Green Curry is sublime. Truly. Order some. And the curry comes with fresh green beans and green pepper that are al dente and a great compliment to the spicy coconut milk curry sauce.
