I came here during lunch around 1 PM on a Saturday, and the place was absolutely jam packed. We managed to get a table for two but larger parties were still waiting. I ordered Samosas, a Thai Fried Rice and chicken panang curry to serve two people. Coming from the Indian subcontinent, I have been eating samosas all my life and know exactly how they taste like. These were two raw and bland. This is the only reason I took a star off. The panang curry and the fried rice were perfect. I like the taste and aroma. I would definitely visit back. Came here after a long day trip to and from Toledo. Not in the best of moods as my college football team had just lost a nail-biter and was looking for something to cheer me up. (Thai has a way of doing that for me) Our group of 4 was promptly seated out in the back patio per our request where we were enveloped by beautiful plants, the warm night air, smiling Buddhas and spouting fountains. It was all of our first times and two of the party were not particularly familiar with Thai fare. We quickly trained them up and among the four of us selected Pumpkin Curry, Green Curry, Phad See Eaw and Yellow Curry Fried Rice. Each dish was beautifully plated and heaping with gobs of delicious food. We kept it toned down on our spice level (2-3) and were plenty happy with the outcome. Not butt-burning but just a hint. Noodles and rice were well cooked and the vegetables were fresh and well prepared. I'm so happy we have leftovers for tomorrow! We will definitely be back for that patio feel and vibes. read more

Headed here on a Friday evening because we were all feeling Thai food. I suspect that street parking could be an issue sometimes here but since it was the dead of Pittsburgh winter, we didn't have trouble parking. There are 6 or so steps to get into the establishment. (Not sure how someone with a disability might enter.). But on to the main event... food! We ordered the Vegetable 4 U appetizer which had spring and summer rolls and samosas. I didn't manage to get a photo before the four of us destroyed it. Very fresh ingredients and tasty sauces. For the main course, I split the chicken pad Thai and the shrimp red chili with another diner. We ordered 4/5 on the spicy scale and if you like a kick, I'd definitely go up to a 5. The other people in our group ordered panang curry with beef and green curry with tofu and brown rice. Everyone enjoyed their choices. Delicious Thai food!! I had never been to this location before, but now I realize I was missing out. While the downtown restaurant is always busy and a bit crazy, this location is calm and has a fantastic back patio with fountains, statues, and plants. Our server was excellent too. She continuously filled up our water glasses and brought us everything we needed without us even asking; it's like she could read our minds. I ordered the Cashew Chicken entree and it was delicious. The dish is full of peppers, carrots, broccoli and onions, as well as chicken and topped with cashews. My spice level of 3 was just enough to give it a bit of heat but not too much to not enjoy the flavor. I've been coming to Nicky's since I first went 5 years ago. Off Western avenue, Nicky's has ample street parking opportunities and is across from 412 Brewery and near War Streets brewery. What sets it apart from other Thai places is that it doesn't look cookie cutter. The fresh spring rolls were a delight, and the pad thai was delicious. Not greasy. I ordered a medium level of spiciness, which was adequate. Just remember, go low and get a spice tray on the side. What is done can't be undone. The service was quick, and the prices are very reasonable. Its summer patio is like a Thai oasis. You can't not take pictures of the place. I now live in Pittsburgh, so I look forward to eating more at Nicky's in the future. I encourage everyone to come just for the experience of sitting in the patio. You won't regret it. read more

I'm obsessed with spring rolls so that was the first thing I ordered. Unlike other places, they cut up the rolls into pieces and I actually appreciated that. The food was okay. The service was good until a few minutes before we finished our meal when the server brought the check and informed us that a 20% gratuity was added to the bill. While I have no problem with that, I would have appreciated knowing beforehand. After we paid the bill, no more than two to three minutes later, we were asked to leave because people were waiting. A friend once told me that there's no such thing as bad Thai food. I don't know if that's true, but I CAN say that there's no such thing as bad Thai food at Nicky's. It's long been my favorite spot for Thai food. The food is absolutely amazing and always beautifully presented. The kitchen staff is very knowledgeable and accommodating of my dietary restrictions, and I feel very confident in their guidance. The (covered) patio at this location has a wonderful, warm atmosphere, with tasteful but fun Thai decor. The other Nicky's locations (cultural district and North Hills) serve alcohol, but I prefer BYOB both for the $avings and better wine selections. The portions are fairly typical - meaning that I usually have leftovers for the next day's lunch. My daughter and I shared lunch there recently. We were glad to see that Nicky's if adhering to COVID precautions. I've been limiting my dining out, but would definitely be comfortable returning to Nicky's. read more

At long last I had a chance to eat at Nicky's - I am REALLY late on this one, aren't I? - which has always been praised by friends as a great place to eat tasty Thai food. And I have to agree! Admittedly walking in to this place is a little funny since it was built in a classic old Pittsburgh home - so, compact in the front but long overall. You have to walk down a long hallway towards what just looks like their kitchen to get to their seating area, which is on the other side of the wall in that long hallway. From there we were seated in their lovely looking if not a little small dining area, had our orders taken quickly, and also got our food fairly quickly. It was definitely a pleasant dining experience. Firstly, can I just say that I'd come back here just for a glass of their jasmine green iced tea? It was infused with something - Milk? Cream? Seriously message me if you know what it was! - and the result was a really unique and absolutely delicious beverage. Don't worry, though, the food's good too. I enjoyed a fantastic order of Pad Thai that can be summed up in one word - yum! Everything was cooked, spiced and mixed perfectly, and after some of my past experiences with Thai food it was a relief to enjoy a meal that was tasty even though I ordered a mild meal. Thankfully Nicky's is not one of the places that confuses spiciness with flavor! Oh, and just to make everything even better, my meal (and my friend's salad) both came with a single crab rangoon on the side. Seriously, more places need to do this! I adore crab rangoon but ordering a whole appetizer can be a bit much sometimes. This was the perfect compromise and it added yet another layer of flavor to my meal. After a fun afternoon at The Mattress Factory Museum we headed over to Nicky's for dinner. It was a hot day but we could help but go out into their garden/outdoor eating area and check it out. So serene and beautifully decorated. So about the food. We started with the Happy Hour special: Crab Rangoons. They were SOOO GOOD! Next my husband and I each ordered the Chef's special: Phad Garprow Combo which was delicious!!! I ordered medium heat which was spicily perfect. It was stir fried ground chicken, bell peppers and basil in a sauce served on jasmine rice with 2 fried eggs on top. It also came with 2 egg rolls, 3 crab rangoons (which was awesome because I could have eaten just these by the platterful) and a bowl of Tom yum shrimp soup. Oh. My. Goodness! The food was divine. Our grown daughter ordered another one of the chef's specials: Hung Ley Curry with Grilled Scallops. Another winner! Curry was complex and rich in flavor with lots of nicely sized scallops. Back in Pittsburgh for a week and I am finally have time to try this Thai restaurant. It is really close to where I used to live - Mexican War St area. I really like the decor, it reminds me of home. The server was attentive and friendly, so that's always a plus. I got the tofu appetizer, wish its dry and not soaked in oil, i like my fries soggy but not my tofu. The first dish I got salmon green curry, I could taste the coconut milk and it's tasty and rich with flavor, they also put enough veggies(mangoes broccolies onions carrots) The second dish I got thai style fried rice in Thai Hot, they cut up thai chili and it was spicy. The flavor was just okay to me. I cook all the time so in my head, I could make this fried rice at home lol. I found that Thai restaurant in Pittsburgh area set their price pretty high compare to the other states. I could get the same fried rice veggie dish less than 15bucks. The place doesn't look like much from the outside but it is quite spacious inside (I believe there is outdoor seating available but I was seated inside). The food was good (I had the mango curry seafood) and was prepared quickly. The staff was extremely friendly without hovering too much. My beautiful bride and I came here for Valentines day weekend. I made reservations ahead of time for 530pm and we actually got here right when they opened at 5pm. There was already a line building up to get in here. If you plan on coming here make sure to call ahead for reservations just to be safe. Even though we were early they still sat us at our table right away. It's a small dining room and it was packed. So if you don't like eating in a small place maybe just order take out and go to a brewery. Hey that's not bad idea! Anyways we were seated and got comfy. We have been eating a lot of Thai food lately and we both have been in a wide noodles type of mood so that's what we ordered. First we started with Spring rolls with shrimp in them that were delicious. We were hungry and ate every roll with no problem. Like I said we have been eating a lot of Thai and this was up there as one of the best rolls. Carrie asked for their hot spices to whip up here own spice which turned out pretty good. I used some it too for my rolls. It took about 15 to 20 minutes to get our main dish. I ordered the Phad See Eaw and my wife ordered the Spicy Noodle. Her dish was really good so check out her review on that. My Phad See Eaw was good too. I ate about half of it cause I wanted to leave some to take for home. I'm glad that I did. I thought my Phad See Eaw was a solid 4 at first. I thought at another Thai restaurant my wide noodles were slightly better. It wasn't until I got home and reheated my food the next day that I liked it even more. I'm not sure why but sometimes reheated food does it for me and it sure did here. We ate here on a trip at the recommendation of someone at our hotel. We sat outside on the covered patio and felt very safe from a Covid perspective. All of the staff were wearing their masks properly covering their mouth and nose. We started with the samosas which were very light and not as heavy as Indian samosas. My husband got the pineapple curry which was very tasty, but I took the recommendation of our server and got the cashew entrée with tofu, and we both agreed that my meal was our favorite. Plenty of vegetables, and I like that they still had a crunch rather than cooked to mush like so many places. And the cashew sauce was just so flavorful! I have been going to Nicky's for many years and have always enjoyed their food. I haven't gone as much lately because I feel like they have been giving less and charging more. But then when you eat the food, you kind of forget about that because the food is very good. The Western Avenue location recently went through some renovations and I just went to have lunch there recently and after getting my bill, I started to leave a 20% tip and total out the bill and after I signed it I thought that the bill seemed a bit high for two people. Buried at the bottom of the charge receipts was the actual itemized bill and everything was as it should be with one exception, they had automatically added 20% to the bill and totaled it. So I was giving another 20% on the already inflated bill. On the charge receipt they did not indicate that they had already put on 20% or give you a place that said "additional gratuity". They just had the total and "add tip", then "total". VERY MISLEADING! I am glad I caught it and made the change. The service was not terrible, but not great. It is the first time I have ever been to a restaurant that automatically added a 20% gratuity on a party of two. I understand when they do it for a larger group and completely agree with that, but to do it on a party of two and not even make it clear on the receipt you are signing and adding a tip to is very unprofessional. Very disappointed. I think I will be trying the many other food options available in our city. read more
