Due to the Yelp reviews, I decided to take a potential client here for lunch since my client worked nearby. I had made a reservation online since I had never been here before and was unsure of the lunch crowd. When we arrived there was no need for a reservation there were plenty of seats. The décor was clean, modern and refreshing. Yelp states this is an Italian restaurant but in my opinion based upon the lunch menu I would classify this restaurant as American. There were burgers, pizza, salads and American style entrees. I had a grilled flat iron steak with anilla scented sweet potatoes and broccoli rabe. This was a very tasty dish to my surprise. If I was in the area again I would definitely eat here with or without a client. This restaurant is conveniently located within NJPAC, there is an entrance from the street. I went here for an event and the catering was unbelievable. The servers were fast, friendly and professional, and the food was very tasty without being unhealthy. I was actually very impressed with the selection of appetizers they came around with. It was a pleasant devation from your standard hot dogs and mozzarella sticks. The crab cakes, mini pizzas, and zucchini chips, among others, were delicioso. The space is huge and definitely conducive to large groups. I could see coming here for dinner if I was in the area. Also - their drinks were tasty and STRONG. Definitely not cheap on the servings here. I went to La Vela last night and was delighted to find that they made the Chicken Francaise I love that they used to make for me when I lived nearby, and that it was still as delicate and tender as it consistently was years ago. I can honestly say it is the best Chicken Francaise I have ever eaten, anywhere. The sauce was light and delicious, the vegetables were cooked perfectly, and the potatoes were excellent. The bread was also fresh and tender and dangerous if you're dieting. The house salad was also plentiful, fresh and tasty. My friend had pasta fettucine with meat sauce and was very dissapointed, however. The service was also good. It's worth a try. Reasonable neighborhood restaurant that has been there for years and survived while so many others have failed. read more

I went with a group of 10 co-workers for dinner and a show. We had a 5:30 reservation which should have given us plenty of time for dinner before the 7:30 show. Our waiter brought our drinks to the table 2 at a time (not very efficient) and we did not get served our dinner until 7:00! Some of us were able to get our drinks refreshed, but not all of us. Dessert was served but we were not asked if we would like coffee or tea. Needless to say, by the time we got the check and settled our affairs, it was already 7:30 and we had to wait outside the theatre doors until 7:45 to get in. My friend had the Cuban with fries (which I ate most of the fries;)) NICHOLAS our server was the best, he was courteous, knowledgeable and made our experience that much better. I would not recommend this place. The food was extremely expensive for what you get. With the very limited choices the food should have been excellent. They were out of the prime rib so I ended up getting a burger which I ordered medium rare, it was well done and probably the worse burger I ever had. My husband got the veal which also was not very impressive. For $40 each out should have been much better. Even the water was horrible, no ice and it was tap water. Never again! read more

Went here at 9pm before a show next door at the NJPC. There were only about 5 items to order off there food menu but a full bar still available. I was very disappointed in their menu. They said they switched menus in anticipation of larger crowds, but on the website for performance nights the menu is still much larger. Since there was nothing else close by, we decided to stay. My hubby had the chicken lollipops which he said were room temp which made him nervous to eat. Btw they don't have BBQ sauce! I had the margarita pizza which was more like a plain pizza with a few greens scattered on top. I thought the pizza was ok but my hubby disagreed. The drinks good but $8 for a beer was a little pricey. Service was friendly and pretty quick. read more

I really want to like this place. I really do. Especially because they're right inside the NJPAC but for some reason the food never really rises to the occasion. It's always either too bland, or over seasoned or under seasoned or just plain uninspired. This has been the consistent feeling. Again I want to like them because it's super convenient with them being located right in the NJPAC to go before a show but they definitely need to make some culinary changes if they want to continue to compete with the growing population of Newark eateries eager to increase their patron market share. read more

We went to Nico's before a concert last night and to avoid the rush if we went somewhere else in Newark. We should have gone somewhere else. The service and food quality were awful. First, they had a performance menu/prix fix which means that with a limited menu the food is served more quickly. We had a 5:30 reservation, ordered at 5:40 and our food wasn't served until 6:30! WTF!!! And then 2 of the entrees were undercooked and had to be sent back. So much for avoiding the rush. We were scrambling to get to our seats and the opening act had already started. Nico's is not the place to go if you're trying to get to an NJPAC concert on time. SMH!! read more

My boyfriend and I decided to dine at Nico's before the Kevin James comedy performance. We chose the spot due to convenience, but after what we experienced, I will easily walk a few blocks next time to get a hot, palatable meal with good service. We arrived for our reservation, unbeknownst to us that the entire menu was prefixed for $44/person. That just tipped me off right there. First course my boyfriend ordered the smelly, stinky seafood salad. Second course had been sitting under a heat lamp for what seemed like an hour since the sauce had hardened over my extremely petite fillet mignon. Mind you, our wine glasses had been empty all the while. Dessert, server had to ask us 3 times what we were waiting on. If we had known the apple shortcake was going to be apples out of a can accompanied with a dry biscuit, I would have just anticipated getting M&Ms as a desert from the concession stand at NJPAC. We had a drink at the bar first - very friendly bartender who allowed us to sample the wine before deciding. Ok so I don't live in NJ and was only there to attend the tapping of America's Got Talent! Nico was the only place around and the locals raved about it...Being a typical New Yorker I was a bit skeptical, being in Jersey and all. Well, my intuition was right. So the service was average, wait no, it was actually lame, sorry! Waited for ever to get our orders in, including drinks. I ordered wine because you can't really mess that up much! Appetizers were horrendous, the chicken wings had some weird sauce and the calamari was completely dried up. The whole combo was disgusting and severely under seasoned! I ordered the salmon and asked it to be cooked rare. On that account my fish was cooked perfectly. On the other hand, it was completely tasteless until I myself added salt and pepper from the table. Presentation was lacking and it looked like the whole thing was just thrown together. My sister's lobster mac and cheese was completely disgusting and inedible! Needless to say, I'm sure there are wonderful places in NJ, but that wasn't it and I'm surprised this place received positive reviews. Now I look pretty young for my age and some might even confuse me for a teenager, but never in my life have I been called "sweetie" in a restaurant while being handed my food...another big no-no for me!
