We were somewhat perplexed by all the positive reviews. First the good: Pleasant service. Reasonable prices. Casual location. Now the mediocre: The food. The bread loaf looked great but tasted like Wonder Bread. The house salad was something you'd get from a cheap cafe. The scallops were small with little seasoning. The whitefish was dry. Experience was not the best! We were visiting from the northern suburbs of Chicago and love a good supper club! We reserved a table for the party of 8 to celebrate my birthday. Our server continually passed over some of our party when ordering drinks and apps. He never offered another round or asked if anything was needed after our food arrived. The food was subpar for what was being charged, three of the entrees were inedible, the apps were average and the drinks were not good. Then we find all these extra charges added to our bill at the end that were not listed on the menu nor communicated with us by our server. We have no intention of returning, but I do hope that feedback helps give future diners a more pleasant experience. read more

Whenever we're on vacation anywhere in Wisconsin, we try to hit up a supper club in the area. We found that Nightingale Supper Club was closeby to our airbnb and well rated so we made reservations. When we were shopping elsewhere in Door County and a local mentioned that their favorite supper club in Door County is Nightingale, we knew we were in for a treat. An indeed we were! In true supper fashion, we began our experience in the bar for cocktails. I was delighted to find a traditional old fashioned on the menu and so that's what I ordered. It was made with Woodford and in traditional style, no wash. It was pitch perfect. Once we transitioned to the dining room, we ordered whitefish cakes for an appetizer, which were served with a perfectly savory red pepper remoulade. They were delicious. Each evening they have a nightly special. We were there on a Wednesday. The Wednesday special is the Chef Special, which is the chef's choice of unique creation. The evening I was there was a pasta dish with a creamy pesto and a balsamic drizzle. It was divine. Throughout the evening, from the bar to hostess to the dining room, the service was lovely. The prices are very reasonable for a supper club and the atmosphere is all cozy candlelight. Get to it! read more

Reservation visit on a busy Saturday evening. After a short visit to the bar, our table was ready. Bartenders were friendly and made great drinks! Our server Megan was busy with a large group and other tables, but took great care of us and was helpful and friendly. I got the Pesto Pasta and added the $15 steak bites. Wow, I for a huge plate of pasta with pretty much a full steak on top. It was 2 meals for me. My wife got the Surf (shrimp) and Turf Saturday special. Also a great piece of meat and 3 grilled shrimp. This was our first visit to an old supper club from 1913. We went on a Thursday night and it was a good thing we made reservations because it was very crowded. Thursday night the 16 once prime rib was the special so that is what we got. It came with fresh bread, soup or salad and your choice of vegetables or potatoes. We decided on the asparagus crab soup and it was fantastic, with a lot of asparagus chunks in a creamy soup. The prime rib was juicy and tender in aujui with creamy horseradish on the side. For dessert we had the homemade cherry pie that was the best I've ever tasted. The atmosphere is a little noisy and it looked like it could use a makeover but the staff were all very friendly and service was excellent. We will be back and I would recommend this when in Door County. read more

Finally made it to the Nightingale on our way to Door County for the weekend. We made reservations, but arrived earlier than expected and knew we would spend some time at the bar waiting. We found four seats at the bar and proceeded to have delicious cocktails and ordered the Prime Rib Nachos as an appetizer. The nachos are OUT OF THIS WORLD. Of course, depending on what bartender makes your drink, the garnish in my Lemon Drop Martini changed, but each one was just as good - just a different presentation. While there is no salad bad, we had delicious salads. I didn't love the Sour Cream Chive wedges that I had with my tenderloin and shrimp...but it was a very good meal! Love a supper club! Made an 8pm reservation online for a Saturday night. We received a buzzer when we arrived which seemed a little weird since there were open tables. The vibe was a little more upscale than other supper clubs I've been to, but definitely not stuffy. The Brewers game was on in the bar. We ordered bacon wrapped scallops, stuffed mushrooms, and the surf and turf. The mushrooms were so tasty! The scallops didn't seem super fresh. The beef tenderloin and lobster were both excellent! Most of the food came out quickly. There was a bit longer of a wait for the steak and lobster. We also ordered a grasshopper for dessert - always a good idea! read more

I took my family to try a supper club because we always pass by them, but never get to experience them. We were on a mini vacation and decided to make a plan to visit one. We decided to go to Nightingale and we were all glad we did! We made a reservation and arrived early for it because we were all hungry. Gladly we were seated shortly after because they appeared to be busy. Three of us ordered the special, prime rib and it was the best we have ever tasted; mind you we buy our meat directly from a farmer and always notice a difference in quality. A reservation is a must during season. The first available was at 8pm. We wanted to experience a true Door County supper club and this place was a recommendation from several locals, including a restaurant owner in Ephraim. We got there early enough to sit at the bar that winds like a Door County country road. Stools are red vinyl and wood; a tasteful holdover from maybe the seventies. The bartenders were quick and friendly. Fellow guests at the bar sparked conversations with strangers in true Midwest pleasantry. Old fashions are one of the must have adult beverages and Wisconsinners have their own recipe. Others be damned. While we waited for our table we ordered an appetizer of house made smoked whitefish cakes served with roasted red pepper remoulade. Very delicious. When we were called for our table, the hostess led us into the open air dining room where accordion partitions folded flush awaiting to separate the room for some future banquet or Rotary Club meeting. The waitress was pleasant and efficient. She brought ice waters and allowed time to peruse the menu.. Supper clubs have a long, colorful history throughout America and at one time there were hundreds in the state of Wisconsin. Fans of supper clubs are loyal and enjoy being ensconced in the history and tradition of culinary Americana. Relish trays, complimentary for each table, were once as common as a basket of warm bread. Here, the relish trays are gone but a warm mini loaf of bread awaited the pats of near frozen tin-foiled butter bars. Supper clubs have varied menus but one thing is almost certain; there is an entree special each night and you can count on perch or other lake fish on Friday, fried or broasted chicken on Sunday and surf and turf prime rib, liver and onions and pork chops the rest of the week. You get the idea. My wife's 10 ounce prime rib was the Saturday night special. A tender cut of beef (Creamy horseradish on the side. Of course.) accompanied by a side of sweet and sour green beans and a so-so salad. The entree was very good. More than she could finish, even at the smallest cut of prime. The green beans were a bit oily from the bacon crumbles. I ordered one grilled pork chop accompanied by a similar salad and an ice cream scoop of garlic mashed potatoes. A lil' condiment cup held some chilled apple sauce. The chop was tender and flavorful, the mashed potatoes were just okay and lacked a garlic flavor. We passed on the dessert menu but the choices were tempting and no doubt worth it. Don't pass on the opportunity to dine in the traditions of a true supper club. read more

Had some drinks until the dinner service was ready at 5. The food came out hot and good. The baked potatoes were piping hot. The dessert, pumpkin pie, wasn't special in any way. We are supper club enthusiasts. Frequenting them for forty plus years. When planning a vacation a supper club (if in the area) is always a must. One of the highlights of the trip. We anticipate the dining experience from the first leisurely sip of a well made brandy old fashioned to the bread basket, soup and finally the main course. We are here to dine and enjoy ourselves with a well paced meal. The menu prices give the perception this isn't a turnstile establishment. We had reservations, they we're running late so we had a rail drink in the bar. It's a rail drink nothing to write home about. Price was good. When we were seated we ordered a muddled old fashioned and a martini. The old fashioned was a bit better than the rail, not sure it justified the price. The martini was watery. Probably due to warm gin and too much ice trying to cool it down. It came in a cute carafe so bonus points for presentation. Dining experience/service: Two stars. We both ordered prime rib, rare, loaded potatoes and soup. The drinks arrived and before we had a chance to try them our dinners were plopped down in front of us. Whoa, I asked the waitress about our soup. She looked at her pad and said she would go get them. So now all of our food was in front of us at one time. She set the soup down and raced off. No bread as promised on the menu. Halfway through our hurried dinner she checked in. I asked her about the bread. She said she figured we wouldn't want it as she messed up the service. Thanks for making that decision for us. So, instead of having a leisurely dining experience we felt like we were in a cafeteria where they throw everything on your tray and hope you don't take up space too long so they can turn tables faster. Food: 5 stars. Both the split pea and asparagus crab soup were delightful with the asparagus crab soup winning the taste test. Very asparagus forward with no fishy taste. They tell you up front they use imitation crab. It's still really good. Can't comment on the bread as we didn't get any. From peeking at other tables it looked homemade and good. The prime rib was the star of the show. A supper club favorite. It ruled. Perfectly rare, covered in au jus with a side of horseradish sauce. Very tender and flavorful. Extra points for a sharp steak knife. The loaded baked potatoes were topped with bacon and cheese with a side of sour cream and were excellent. read more

We had a wonderful meal here last night. My friend had grilled salmon and said it was delicious. I had the light order of shrimp sautéed in a garlic butter which was outstanding ! And I was happy to be able to order a smaller amount. The asparagus soup was creamy and very tasty and paired greatly with the fresh bread. I had a Cinnamon Apple sangria which was excellent. Truly a memorable dining experience. Not one item we ordered had any flavor at all of any kind. Actually flavorless. It's so bad it was actually funny. It's as if every item was microwaved and boiled in water. There's not a single ounce of spice or seasoning on anything. I got the grilled salmon with green beans. You shouldn't do that. The salmon tasted like an overcooked microwaved shoe but with a cold fleshy quality to it that was awful. Easily number 1 worst piece of salmon I've had in my life. You should 100% eat somewhere else unless you're over 80 and have very minimal taste buds left or if you carry around some garlic and other spices in your pocket usually. Service is fine. Next stop on my supper club tour! I've been here before but it was many years ago. I struggled with a rating - probably not quite up to a 3 but if the rest of my party wanted to ever go back I'd go and just order things a little differently. The prominent bar has a fantastic seating area and gives off some great old school vibes. I ordered a muddled old fashioned - which was served tall and heavy on the soda. Sadly we couldn't get here on a Friday night so no fish fry for me! I had the fried shrimp with a "loaded" baked potato which conjured all sorts of fabulous images in my head and reality did not match up. It felt like a microwaved potato that had some bacon bits and cheddar cheese stuffed down into the seam where it had been sliced. That was a $2 up charge from a standard baked potato which feels a little indefensible. The shrimp were ok - not anything to write home about. The salad was fine as well. Bread is served as crusty mini loaves - when you go to cut into it you compress the bread down and are left with a thin slice of bread that you have to pull apart a bit to try and butter with the cool pats of butter that are on the table. Several members of our family had steak or prime rib and were happy with their choices. The service was great. They put two servers on our party of 12 and they were both attentive and friendly. read more

Went on a Thursday for their prime rib special. It did not disappoint. The entree and the sides were cooked to perfection. While talking to my wife, one of us mentioned our recent anniversary. We are avid supper clubbers and decided to swing by here on our girls trip. We came here on a Tuesday night and walked in to an empty bar. Sat and had a drink, as they had a couple of larger groups in a side room. We got the around 6:30 and didn't get out of there until 8:45. When we were walking out, we realized they close in 15 minutes and some people in there still hadn't gotten their food. So the time management seemed a little off, especially for a Tuesday. But again, not sure if that's due to the larger groups or not. The food was delicious. We had stuffed mushroom caps as an appetizer and they were phenomenal! The soup was cream of asparagus that night and it wasn't the best we've had, but it was good. With the long span in between everything, we were famished by the time our food arrived. My steak and mushrooms were just delicious as was my cousin's meal. We'd love to bring our other halves back to try this one out, but I can only imagine the process on a weekend night, ESPECIALLY if you come during peak season. I lived in Sturgeon Bay for over 27 years. Went to the Nightengale many, many times. I've never ever had a bad meal. I get back every few years, the last time on 9/17/24. The prime rib is still as great as it always was! I read a pair of one-star reviews. The reviews were remarkably alike, same rhythm, same words. One named two other restaurants in Northern Door. They can't hold a candle to the Nightingale! Another one star was someone who got their nose out of shape because the host was rude and said they couldn't eat at the bar. Grow up! It's been the rule forever! "Rude" is subjective. Never ate a bite. Just left and gave one star. SMH. The atmosphere is great, and the service is top-notch. read more

Dined on a Friday, with a reservation. We (too) showed up right on time, and had a 10 minute or so wait so we (too) enjoyed a drink at their uniquely shaped bar. There were at least 4 bartenders working, and they were hopping! There is more to Door County dining than fish boils and Swedish pancakes. Long ago, we discovered the places that seasoned vacationers and locals prefer, and Nightingale is among our favorite dining spots in DC. It's a throwback to the mid-century style of supper club. These places, typically one of a kind and family owned, are struggling to compete with today's national restaurant chains. Never mind that this unassuming building stands amid a sea of asphalt across the street from a Walmart. Once inside, you're transported to a leisurely '60s-style experience where your visit begins with traditional cocktails and complimentary appetizers in the comfortable bar room. When your table is ready, you shuffle beneath a glowing neon sign proclaiming "Dining Room" in orange script to a room adorned with framed pictures of Great Lakes vessels and local scenes. It's a plain but pleasant and conversation-friendly room, with tables spaced far apart and blinds obscuring the not-so-scenic view. The menu features all of the vacationland classics you might expect. Shrimp cocktail, steak, cheese curds, steak, broasted chicken, steak, and pan-fried fish, yes. But fast-forward to the House Specialties and Nightly Specials. If you're fortunate to visit on a Monday night (as we recently did), treat yourself to the lobster tail or surf & turf specials. For $21 ('market price' on other days), the 8-10 oz. lobster tail dinners include choice of soup or salad, a mini-loaf of warm bread, and choice of side. Delish and a spectacular value. On previous visits, we've enjoyed the Friday fish fry and superb prime rib - heads turn whenever these thick slabs are paraded through the dining room. This restaurant has been in business since the 1930s and we enjoy their old-school traditions like chopped liver and cheese spread in the bar, white tablecloths, and butter warmers. Servers are friendly and accommodating, and the portions are generous. Nightingale has neither a view of the water nor goats grazing on the roof, but these things honestly don't matter to the folks who pack this popular spot nightly.
