Went for dinner last night and had a great meal really enjoyed ourselves the only issue I had was that they charged us 3.5 % for using our debit card I don't understand some places doing this debit is the same as cash if restaurants are got to continue to add this fee to our debit card we will only go to places that add this fee and if they all start adding this fee I will no longer go out to eat I've been to places that don't charge a fee very disappointing read more

Just moved to Raleigh from Chicago. It had been 3yrs since I dined there. It was as good if not better than the first time. The staff and service were great. Very attentive and accommodating. I finally made it back to Nina's Ristorante after a stressful week and this was the perfect choice. Nina's takes reservations so I would highly recommend a reservation if you want to dine at a certain time. The staff was friendly and we were told all of the specials. I went with the homemade fettuccine noodles again with the alfredo sauce as that is my comfort food of choice after a long work week. I added the shrimp again but think I had six this time. We had a new waitress who was training but she knew her stuff and was on top of her game. My iced tea was not refilled though. I also went with the cheesecake with strawberries for dessert. It was really good. The portion size of the cheesecake was larger than I expected and the strawberries were delicious. I have to make sure to order a different dish next time as the menu has so many options. read more

I hesitate to give this review but everything went downhill. The server was decent at first but kept going MIA (actually we knew where he was, he was managing the bar as well as serving so he disappeared for long periods of time). We ordered two dishes, a drink and a dessert.. total cost, $94.82. How? We're not sure, the math was very funky. First off, they charge a 4% fee for paying by credit card. That's just odd. So, drink $13, soda $3, spaghetti $25, Fettuccine $24, and choc cake $13... subtotal says $84, which it isn't, it's $78. The server said there's a 4% cc charge but that still doesn't total $84. That's magic math right there. We didn't bother arguing the math anymore and just paid it. We're not from NC but isn't there supposed to be an alcohol tax? There wasn't one on the bill. On to the food... $25 for spaghetti and $24 for fettuccine. That's a seriously high amount for the small portions you get. Worse yet, it was good but not anything special. Some would almost say it was plain. At least they had enough sauce so it wasn't dry. All in all, the place was highly recommended but very disappointing. We will be back to Raleigh but not to this restaurant. Apparently when the place was ran my Nina it was amazing but whoever is doing it now is focusing on massive profits and lowered the standards. Delicious Italian cuisine in quiet setting. Dinner at Nina's on a recent Friday night. For a restaurant with food this good it was a surprise that every table was not full. It's a square room, about a dozen tables to the right, a bar surrounded on 3 sides with additional tables to the left. Service was quick and friendly. We were surprised that there are no kids choices on the menu.. think twice about bringing food-picky youngsters. We started with calamari and caprese salad. An excellent rendition with equal number of rings and tentacles. Deep fried golden crispy brown, served with tomato sauce with a slight kick. The caprese was unique by adding prosciutto to the standard tomato, mozzarella and basil. Fresh, creamy mozzarella combines with the salty prosciutto for a great taste. Great appetizers! For entree, I chose the capellini con gamberoni, ponolle spinaci. Six perfectly cooked shrimp are served over capellini, laced with spinach and pine nuts, sauteed in garlic and lemon wine sauce. The thin capellini is cooked perfectly, the shrimp crisp with a hearty crunch in every bite. The lemon wine sauce is a nice complement to the spinach, enhancing the taste without being too bitter. Delicious! Cannoli and cheesecake for dessert. Cheesecake is NY-style, with strawberries. It's creamy and tart/sweet with a perfect crust. Cannoli was OK. The shell here is dipped in chocolate, which to me takes away from the taste. The filling was excellent though - creamy and just sweet enough. Not a pizza-place kind of restaurant, Nana's is a solid choice for upscale Italian fare at a reasonable price. Recommended. read more

I'm reluctant to write negative reviews but would have appreciated this recent type info before going in. I will check before going to a place in the future but my previous experience didn't seem to warrant it. I didn't realize it had changed ownership. My brother and his wife were in town for a rare visit. We decided to go here, admittedly w/o a reservation and a bit late (8:15 or so?). It took a good while for someone to acknowledge us...they were apparently short staffed. Asked us a couple times IF we had made a reservation. I'd been here years ago and had an amazing dining experience so was unfortunately repeatedly disappointed with various things. It took a good 20 minutes to get a table set up for us. It also took a good while to get drinks, menus, bread and watery bruschetta (no oil or butter). My brother ordered spaghetti & meatballs, his wife the shrimp, pasta, spinach entree (sorry don't recall dish names) and I just ordered calamari. There dishes were ok nothing spectacular; my calamari was not hot or even especially warm...disappointing. It was VERY, very loud...hard to have decent conversation unfortunately. The waiter was EXTREMELY apologetic but it's not his fault they were short staffed...he was embarrassed. He did offer and insist on comping us dessert...they ordered the gelato to split and said it was delicious. So all that said to say, unless the star rating improves I seriously doubt I will ever come back to dine here unfortunately. Apparently the new ownership has had a poor impact?! I can walk to this restaurant so it's very disappointing as I was really hoping to take my brother and his wife out to a really nice meal. Pretty pricey considering all things. The food was great, the service was great, the atmosphere was also great, so why am I giving them two stars? Let me explain. I organize very large group luncheons between 30 and 40 once a month. In order to find a great place to eat I bring two or three friends with me to scout a location. My friends and I sat down last night in a lonely table in the back of the place. Menu is hard to read because the room was quite dark. We chose three appetizers to begin our evening feast. Three of our group had cocktails they enjoyed very much. Kudos to the bar tender. At about $18 each we ordered the eggplant rollatini appetizer and two others. One small rollatini roll arrived about the size of a skinny eggroll we each had one very tiny taste of it. We ordered a mushroom appetizer stuffed with cheese at least it said it was but who could tell, and calamari. Four tiny mushrooms were brought to our table and the only appetizer that was big enough for a decent share was the calamari, which was nothing special. We asked for more bread as the tiny loaf that was first delivered to our table was not enough for the four of us. The second small loaf arrived. We then got our bill We expected the appetizers to be around $60 so that was no surprise but when we realized we were charged $8.00 for the second little loaf of bread that was a bit much. Overpriced for what it is. As a group location we will defiantly pass. As a dining place for me and friends, again we will pass. read more

Although the server was friendly, the service was sloppy - wait staff wearing big baggy sweatshirt with dirty sleeves - not ok, set some standards Ensure the team wears proper black uniforms that fit. 2. White table cloths nice touch, old dried center pieces, not so much. How much can a single fresh carnation cost? Simple and says volumes about someone caring about the details. 3. If you're going to charge $24-30 for pasta dishes, should be fresh pasta, with flavor and know what you're serving. Ordered carbonara- NOT carbonara nor did the server know. 4. Pricey for the experience- one app, 2 pasta dishes, dessert + one glass of house wine- $125 Overall, all signs look like this restaurant is struggling to stay aloft, it's dated, worn, food is dull, and staff couldn't care less if they work there. Still a friendly neighborhood place for a meal and glass of wine food is a step below the past but still good. Quiet and comfortable

We will not be returning. We dined at Nina's this past Friday night, 3/7. Regrettably, and no reflection on the restaurant, a gentleman at the next table passed out necessitating the arrival of Wake EMS and ultimately an ambulance. We offered, and the waiter agreed, that the best move was for us to move one table over. We had already placed our order and had received our salad. The reasons we won't return are as follows: our dinners, pasta with white wine clam sauce and a simple salmon dish with artichokes and tomatoes were ok but not unique. The price listed online for the salmon was $26, on the menu, $30 and on the bill, $35. Quite a difference. There was also $4 surcharge for "increased restaurant costs. The kicker though was that when we moved, the plate with the remaining bread, originally 4 very small slices, was left on our first table. There was a lot of sauce with the clam dish so we asked for some more bread to soak some of it up. We were charged an additional $2! Even before the chaos created by the presence of the EMS, the kitchen was slow for which our waiter kept apologizing. We were anxious to leave and only gave our bill a cursory look. It wasn't until we got home and examined it more closely that we noticed the total charges. We had dinner at Second Empire in February and the bills were almost identical but no way identical in quality of food, service and definitely not the same in ambiance. Long way of saying Nina's is over priced for what you get. There are too many alternatives out there and so we will "vote" with our dollars and will not be returning. read more

Amber and I finally were able.to connect to celebrate my birthday last night. We were both going to be in Raleigh so I searched Google Maps for restaurants near our location. My favorite food is Italian so decided to give Nina's a whirl! To start we were trying to set up her phone to take a pic and the bartender, Chris, noticed and came outside to take it. Chris also ended up being our waiter and made us feel right at home. He was amazing! We recognized they are a little short staffed and service would take longer which gave us visiting/talking time. They have a herb garden where the chef (Roberto?) And Chris get fresh herbs for the drinks and dishes We ordered the Eggplant Rolletini and Gorganzolla Salad to share. The entrees were the Diver Scallops and Ravioli with Salmon. Chris brought the best Salted Carmel ice cream (Gelato?) with whipped cream and a candle for my bday. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and will most certainly be back! read more

The cooking is not like it was when Nina ran the show, Our eggplant app with prosciutto and my wife's capellini with clam sauce had almost no flavor, It was as if water was the only ingredient in the sauces. My cannelloni with red sauce was pretty good, but after tasting my wife's dish, had to write a review. The chef needs to crank up some flavor on some of these dishes or we won't be back. read more

Best Italian in Raleigh hands down. Quiet, off the beaten path hidden gem in North Raleigh. Incredible food, great ambiance and impeccable service. Very well balanced menu and they will prepare any of the classics for you off the menu or make special orders. Very nice and modestly priced wine list. Full bar. Bread with olive oil, balsamic, chopped tomatoes and garlic is to die for. Pastas are fresh home made. Seafood and veal specials. Took my Mom here for her birthday and was a bit disappointed. But I'll start off with the positives: +My Mom said her salmon was cooked perfectly. +They make stellar dessert - tried the tiramisu and cannoli (both were really delicious - try them!) This was the best part of the meal, I'd go back here just for their dessert and cappuccino. +Enjoyed the dipping oil with the bread. Having something more like bruschetta was a very nice touch. +Nice atmosphere. +Friendly, prompt service. Our waiter even took a couple photos of us. He was great. +The wine options are good, whether you want a glass or a bottle. And now for the disappointments: -Wasn't a fan of the calamari. -The two chicken dishes we ordered were tough. Struggling to cut chicken is a bad sign. -The chicken dishes had too much liquid/sauce so everything wound up soggy. -The side vegetables were Brussels sprouts. How is that Italian? Or elevated? Or worth that amount of money? Give zucchini or asparagus. Not soggy Brussels sprouts. -The side starch were roasted potatoes, but because of all the liquid on the plate, they were soggy instead of crisp. -My Grandpa likes his pasta well-cooked, not al dente. So I asked the server to cook the pasta longer than normal, and he wrote down "well done." However, my grandpa said it was still al dente. He also said his meal was too salty (he had the bolognese). But he is very picky and also from Italy, so he can be critical. -Pasta dishes do not come with a starter salad. -My Grandpa also complained about the restaurant being too cold. If you're bringing older people here, be sure to bring an extra jacket for them. -A woman came by after we were seated and said we would receive a tiramisu on the House. I assumed she said this because I had mentioned it was my Mom's bday when making the reservation. And then when we ordered dessert, it seemed like our waiter hadn't been clued in that it was her bday and that she'd be getting tiramisu. So I found the lady who came by when we were seated and she told our server that the tiramisu was for the birthday gal. And he came out with a bday candle and all that good stuff. But then when I got home, I noticed on the bill, they had charged us for her tiramisu, which the woman had said would be complimentary. Not a huge deal, but don't say dessert is on the house and then charge for it. She also said the tiramisu would be really big and can be shared. But if you're anything like me, that delicious tiramisu can be a one-woman job ;) To sum it up, get dinner one place, and then come here for wine, dessert, and coffee. read more

We had a really disappointing experience at Nina's about a week ago. We have not been to this restaurant in several years, but thought we would give it a try. Service was very slow and inattentive, but I tend to give all restaurants grace on that during this post-COVID time. However, the food was pretty awful as well. I ordered the Capellini Con Gaberoni (shrimp, pasta, spinach, pine nuts). I ordered gluten free pasta. If you cannot cook GF well, please don't offer it on the menu. My pasta was crunchy and stuck together, the shrimp (only 5 or 6) were overcooked, and the vegetables and sauce were bland. My husband had the Spaghetti Bolognese and didn't care for his dish either. We also asked to take our food home, and it was packaged up. When we went to leave, the containers weren't sealed properly and both dishes fell through the paper bag onto the pavement, splattering everywhere. We used to frequent Nina's years ago when it was under different management, and we loved it. Our more recent experience was unimpressive. There may be other quality dishes on the menu, but we unfortunately aren't likely to try this restaurant again. read more

I'm not sure what's going on with the revised Nina's. I know Nina is no longer associated but the menu has remained - however the food and flavor pop that used to have mouths watering is seemingly no longer present. The inside decor is slowly being removed and the walls and bar are looking pretty bare as of late too. The long time bartender is still there and he still offers fabulous service and chit chat (and why the 3rd star). But the food and atmosphere are no longer what it once was. I hope it survives. I had an unusual experience trying to dine at this restaurant Saturday night. I went there with my son about 6:55. The restaurant looked to be half full. I requested a table for two from the hostess. She said she had to check availability and left the front area. I thought that was strange since I could see the reservation sheet and saw there were only 4 reservations for 7. I did some quick math and didn't think there was a problem getting seated. The hostess came back several minutes later and said they didn't have any availability the rest of the night. I thought that was odd that we weren't offered to wait until the bar seating opened up or even offered to order a meal to go. I understand a lot of restaurants are under staffed and if that's the case I don't mind being told that. I felt we were flat out refused service. Our family eats here a couple of times a year. The food is not that great but my family enjoys it so I sacrifice my taste buds for them. read more

Have been to Nina's multiple times in the past and never had a bad experience. However, I'm not sure if I can say it's the new owners, but this time around was horrible! We had a large party, so I can understand slower service, but 3 1/2 hours is a bit extreme, especially when it had never been this way before. The food was very inconsistent. The kitchen forgot a couple orders and 2 were wrong. I had a veal dish that I have had many times in the past and it was inedible. The veal was like shoe leather, portion was tiny, and the sauce was watery with NO flavor. I ate one bite and it was so bad I ended up eating my husband's pasta instead. Since no one came to check on us, I wasn't going to send it back at the end of the meal, but I told the waitress that it really wasn't good and instead of taking it off the bill. they CHARGED ME for my entire meal. I literally had ONE BITE taken out of it, ridiculous! Of course when it came time to paying the bill, everyone's checks were wrong. In the end, no one was thrilled with their food, in the past this review would have been very different. I think they need to bring Nina back! read more

This is my husband's family's go-to restaurant for special occasions and sometimes even for not-so-special occasions when we just feel like having great Italian food. We even had our rehearsal dinner here and though they don't have a separate room for special events, they really made us feel special and accommodated almost everything we asked for. The service is excellent, always handling that fine line between attentiveness and overbearing with perfect balance. I've never felt rushed or (conversely) abandoned by the wait staff. The food is awesome too. This is definitely not one of those places that simply stick a gigantic plate of pasta in front of you and expect the quantity to cover for the quality of food. The specials are usually the way to go, but I often times find myself ordering the Pasta ala Nina just because it's so darn good. read more

My wife made a dinner reservation on Nina's website to celebrate my birthday. Reservation was accepted and confirmed as requested. Upon arriving at restaurant, we were told , without apology, that our reservation could not be honored due to a sold out anniversary buffet. They said they had called us and left voice mail - voice mail was received at 6:01 and we were already at restaurant for our 6:00 dinner reservation. Again, hostess and manager were completely unsympathetic. We've enjoyed dinners at Nina's over the years, but this incident has left a bitter taste. Oh, Nina's! You manage to do what so few can - really good homemade pasta. The food doesn't come too quickly, and it only takes a fork full or two to understand why. They do a superb job with their seafood, and the wine list seems comprehensive enough to satisfy most connoisseurs. Don't be fooled by the inauspicious strip-mall locale and the rather humble restaurants around it; Nina's is the real deal. Went here on a Thursday night while in town on business. There was a pretty good crowd for a Thursday night and you can tell this is a place locals frequent. Fantastic food and nice atmosphere! The dipping sauce for the bread was different and very flavorful. I ordered the veal parmesan which was exquisite: perfectly cooked, very crispy, and flavorful sauce. Very delicious Italian food. They have a pre-fix on wednesdays, $60 for two entrees, a bottle of wine, and salads. Since it was sort of a special occasion and we had a group of three people, we added some extra dishes. The appetizer we had (at the recommendation of the waiter) was just so-so but the pasta/veal dishes were amazing!! A fish dish didn't seem that fresh but the other dishes more than made up for it. Its a shame this restaurant is stuck in a strip mall, but the deco inside and the waitstaff are all very nice - definitely worth trying out. read more

Had dinner at Nina's tonight for the first time, and we were pretty disappointed. First thing we noticed when we walked in was the horrible lighting. They have one massive brass chandelier in the middle of the restaurant, and it was incredibly harsh. I asked for it to be dimmed, which made a difference, but still not good. Other than that, they have bad canned ceiling lights, also on HIGH. Not a single candle in the restaurant. I don't think I've ever been to an Italian restaurant that doesn't have candles. The bar area only had the harsh canned ceiling lights that had everyone in spotlights. Not my idea of a cozy, warm space by any means. The only thing on the table were salt and pepper shakers. They really need to add a candle and maybe a small fresh flower in a vase. Not inviting at all. The service was interesting. Our server, while nice, didn't seem to know what he was doing. We ordered a bottle of Sicilian wine for our table of 3. It was delicious. I had a house salad ($5) before my entree and was shocked to be served a plate of mixed greens with nothing at all on it. Hiding underneath the greens at the bottom of the plate were 2 mealy roma tomato slices and a little finely diced red onion. Really disappointing. The balsamic dressing, however, saved the salad. It was delicious! But not enough to bring me back. Entrees - My husband had the pasta special of the evening, and as it turns out, the only pasta they make in house is the pasta of the day. So the website is deceiving. He enjoyed his pasta. My dad had the ravioli with salmon in a cream sauce. A little too rich, but good. I had the Penne Rustica - penne with a cut up sausage, bell peppers and broccoli. Very little flavor and very disappointing. My husband and I ordered a glass of red wine mid-way through our meal (entrees took a long time to arrive), but waited 15 minutes for them. Our server said "sorry for the delay but the wine glasses are in the dishwasher". Yuk! They finally arrived after we'd finished our meals, and the wine was corked. I don't know - We were really excited about trying a new, family-owned Italian restaurant but it was extremely disappointing. We won't be returning, sadly. read more

I'm not one to dish out a 4-star rating everyday. It has to be earned and Nina's delivered w/ gusto! The atmosphere was a warm, semi-formal setting w/ a smaller dining area (I mean it as complementary) well separated from the bar area. The menu has a fair amount to choose from. However, our waiter, Patrick, pointed out that the chefs there were accustomed to making ANY Italian dish not listed, so if you're feeling explorative or have an authentic meal in mind, they're up for the challenge. Our dinner was served to us very prompt, considering the dining area was close to 50% capacity. My wife had a delicious salmon ravioli while I had angel hair pasta, garnished w/ spinach leaves, shrimp, & artichoke hearts in a white wine sauce. The tiramisu dessert was washed down perfectly w/ an excellent cappuccino coffee, the best one I've had since I moved from Washington State! The Pinot Nero wine was quite nice, although my choice wasn't the most complimentary w/ my meal (my fault, not theirs!). The wine selection is decent, w/ a variety of regions to choose from (the color-coded map of Italy was a nice touch). The only downside was the lack of options to order per glass (less than 25 if my memory serves me right). All in all, I would give this amazing restaurant a 4 1/2-star rating. When I want to reward myself with a special meal in a special, yet comfortable environment, I go to Nina's, hands down. It is now my tradition. Normally, I sit at the bar and begin with martini's mixed by Blair or Myatt - both of them mix to perfection, while dipping my crusty bread into the vinegar/oil/fresh herb sauce. And Blair? . . . Myatt? . . . . you two make the bar feel just right. Then if I am in no hurry, I have the rosemary roasted chicken - 1/2 chicken, browned, then roasted to order. Or I have the veal milanese (on the menu? No . . . but Nina walked up one night, we discussed my likes, and she recommended it. Love it!). Periodically I crave the salmon with roasted potatos. Looking for pasta the night before a triathlon and we found Nina's on Yelp. This place is in the corner of a strip mall so it's not the kind of place you stumble upon because it's hidden, but it's pretty good. The beer selection is pretty small and they don't have my favorite wine but they have the typical choices. The bread and dipping sauce served before the meal was wonderful! It's easy to just keep eating it and eating it and eating it........ :-) We ordered the penne alla vodka and the cappellini Primavera. The penne was pretty good but nothing to write home about. The cappellini was very good. I suspect the peas were either frozen or very overcooked but the rest of the vegetables in the dish we're good and the sauce was flavorful and not too heavy. I would definitely order it again. The vibe of this place to me is more "corner café" than "upscale Italian" so it's not a fancy place at all. Plan on spending about $20 per person for entrees.
