This place is truly a remarkable and cozy restaurant offering traditional Japanese food that you don't see elsewhere. Gyoza and okonomiyaki were my top two favorite meals during my most recent visit to Japan so it was nice to not only see it on the menu but to experience it. The tables were full when I arrived but I was seated at the bar and the waiter asked the lady next to me to make room. The gyoza was crisp on the outside with a great vinegary dipping sauce. Stopped by for a late dinner in the area around 11PM on Friday night and the place was popping! We're staying super close and it was pretty drizzly and cold outside so it was nice to warm up with some hot noodle soup. We were seated quickly and ordered two bowls to split, the tan tan ramen with thin noodles and the black garlic with wavy noodles. I preferred the wavy noodles and my husband preferred the thin noodles but both broths were excellent. Small ramen shop in Midtown that provides the most adequate bowl of ramen that I think I have had in all the ramen bowls I have had to date. There is nothing really bad about this ramen, but nothing great about it either. I ordered their white ramen, better known as a Tonkotsu ramen, and I feel it makes the grade on a mediocre level. The amount of noodles they put in are plentiful, and they definitely taste fresh, but the chashu pork that is used is bone dry and the egg that is in the ramen adds zero character to the bowl. I also feel the broth has no flavor and loses its integrity quickly. Ramen is intended to be eaten quickly, but this feels like as soon as the bowl hits the table, you are given five minutes to consume it, thus making the extra noodle refill unnecessary unless you plan on drinking the broth (I did not). Avoid ordering the Bao. These are not worth $10. They are bland, boring, and messy. I have been to restaurants where I look forward to eating these. I did not enjoy these and for a minute lost all faith in Bao-manity. My spirit was broken. However the service was quick and courteous and I found zero judgments from any of the staff. I always commend any restaurant that does not judge its non-ethnic clientele. It creates a more welcoming atmosphere. Nishida passes the mark but it is a ramen shop I will not be returning to. read more

This was one of the few spots that was open at 2 AM and only a few blocks from the hotel we were staying at. It's a small ramen spot but it's really cute inside. There are cute kites hanging from the ceiling and hooks for jackets/umbrellas above the tables. The set up of this spot really maximized the space even though it was small. Even though it was 2 AM, our server was really friendly, welcomed us with a smile and took our order quickly. The restaurant was also pretty packed for the time which was a good sign to us. The food came out within 10 minutes of us ordering. I ordered a gyudon (beef) bowl, salmon onigiri and my husband ordered a bowl of ramen. My onigiri was delicious. The salmon melted in my mouth and the rice was cooked perfectly. It was the perfect appetizer. The gyudon bowl was equally as good. The beef was seasoned well and had the perfect texture. Service: they are super nice. We were seating at the bar first but when the table is open they moved us. Food: This is honest review, the ramen noodles was great you can choose from thin and wavy. I chose wavy. But the broth was bland, we even asked for soy sauce because it was lacking flavor. The broth has that ramen broth consistency but me and my friend both thought that there is not flavor. BLACK RAMEN: this is what I got, again the broth does not have too much flavor. The place started filling up around 6:30pm so recommend coming here earlier. I like that the menu has a good selection of appetizers, ramen and entree meals such as katsu. Ramens range anywhere from $13-16 which is pretty good given the neighborhood. I ordered the black garlic ramen and the soup was aromatic, fresh and not oily and the ramen was nice and chewy. The char siu was a little tough though. The staff were very friendly and service was quick. I also liked that you can hang your jackets on the hooks on the wall. The great update has come. I am so impressed by Nishida ShoTen that I am rushing this out on my phone. This place is the real deal people. They have a SLAM DUNK black kakuni ramen that strikes the right amount of salt and garlic, the egg was absolutely perfect. Nishida Sho-ten is also home to the most chill and best waiters and waitresses. Nobody feels rushed, stressed or any of that and are happy to make conversation, and the music they choose creates the most relaxed ramen slurping ambience I've ever experienced. Which had a rich garlic pork broth that was very delicious! The noodles were cooked perfectly, and the pork chashu was nice and tender. All the ingredients paired very well together to make a delicious bowl. Portion size was good as well. Not too small, not too big. Overall meal tasted very authentic and traditional, which is a huge plus. The Service: Service was great! The waitress that was with us was very nice and friendly. Food was brought out in a timely manner and no issues with the overall service. The Atmosphere: Nice, small and cozy ramen spot. The decor kept it simple and traditional. Nota lot of tables inside, so it can get very busy and wait times can be long, but there is also a bar area where you can go too if you don't want to be seated at a table. Overall, a 4/5! We randomly came here to fix a late night craving for Japanese ramen. The place itself is small, cozy and clean. Walking in we were immediately greeted by our waitress and seated. We had meant to start off with the Japanese buns and Takoyaki, and have the Salmon teriyaki and the chicken ramen as entrees. Everything came out at the same time, which was odd. We didn't mind, but it's something to note. The takoyaki was FANTASTIC. Crispy and flavorful without being overly salty. The Japanese buns were alright. Nothing bad but nothing spectacular. The same could be said about both entrees. Presentation and texture-wise, both were amazing. Everything was cooked perfectly. The only issue we both faced was the amount of flavor and salt. The salmon was VERY salty, yet the ramen seemed to be lacking in either salt or flavor. Really bizarre. The ramen also had a LOT of bean sprouts, which I personally don't mind, but I would prefer either more chicken or noodles. I should mention that we also ordered the Ozeki One Cup Daiginjo sake. I thought it was okay. It wasn't really noteworthy, but my lady didn't enjoy it at all. Sake is a matter of preference of course, but I've had much better sake in other restaurants Our waitress was fantastic. She was efficient and friendly and gave us plenty of time to order our food. The pricing here is also very reasonable considering the portions given. I have mixed feelings about Nishida Sho-Ten. Overall I think it's good but nothing spectacular. TLDR: Nishida Sho-Ten has been on my list for many many years. Perhaps I finally got here past it's glory days. Food is decent but not quite destination-worthy for me. If I were to return, I'd get the red ramen and add the black garlic oil. Tsukune buns (seasonal) were tasty. I had bookmarked Nishida Sho-Ten so many years ago. Finally the stars aligned where I got to try it out. We grabbed the chicken meatball buns, a takoyaki and the black/red ramens. The tsukune buns were interesting. Almost like a chicken meatball pressed patty but it was tasty enough, probably the best dish of the meal. Takoyaki was fine, not particularly memorable. Ramen. Black ramen, the garlic oil was very fragrant but the flavor was not quite as punch as I'd have hoped for. Typically I'm looking for that uber-rich umami flavor that coats all sides of your mouth. Not the case here, it wasn't bad but not particularly great either. Think of an order of truffle fries that smells way more intense than it actually tastes. I did appreciate the chopped onion giving a nice freshness to cut through the richness. Red ramen. Decent spice level but just overall, not too interesting. I think the pro move would be to add the garlic oil to this one. The thin/wavy noodle option is a nice touch. Personally I found the thin noodles to remind me of Cantonese egg noodles for wonton soup. Maybe I'd get the thick ones next time but I have a habit of going thin with tonkotsu broth. They are open quite late so if you're craving a noodle fix in the wee hours, Nishida Sho-Ten is a good spot. As I said, it wasn't awful but definitely not as good as I expected. When I saw the hole in the wall venue with a small line at 1:30pm on a Tuesday I just knew that it would be a good meal. I got in after a 10 minute wait I got a seat on the shared bar seat. Very intimate setting, good for overhearing and people watching if you're in to that kind of thing. Now you know why we are here - the ramen! I had the lunch special which was the White Ramen and gyoza. The gyoza were a perfect bite to beginning with. The White Ramen was phenomenal. The broth was silky and velvety.
