Nisi is one of a handful of restaurants on Roosevelt Island (limited competition). It offers a nice space and during warm weather, outdoors tables which are very appreciated. The food is classic American. Recently, they tried to go upscale and increase prices a lot. This experience seems to have failed and they reverted to their old menu and prices. You can get an "upscale diner" menu and the prices are reasonable. Service can be slow. read more

We live on Roosevelt Island and visited this restaurant earlier today--totally impressed by the revamped menu! The food was excellent, beautifully presented, and easily on par with high-end restaurants. We ordered the Nisi burger, beet salad, and pasta. The beet salad presentation (as you'll see in the photos) was artfully done. The burger was juicy, the fries perfectly crisp, and the pasta--freshly made--was better than what I've had at many Italian spots. We'll definitely be back to try the breakfast/brunch menu, which looked fantastic. Service was ok, albeit on the less attentive side, but the live band on Saturday evening added a lively, welcoming vibe. You never know what you're going to get here because the menu changes faster than at any restaurant I've been to before. I remember when the old Nisi, before they tried again to be upscale fine dining, could actually make a decent grilled cheese, but not now, not even a decent grilled cheese. Today's grilled cheese "on thick bread" (why?) had cheese that wasn't melted. And the sandwich wasn't hot enough. And the fries (usually are good) weren't hot. And the place was empty so what's your excuse Nisi? What a screw up. I used to think the owner at least understood diners, he certainly has no understanding of fine dining (note to owner, you *cannot* do fine dining with cafeteria silverware and paper napkins. CANNOT.) So I sent half the grilled cheese back to heat it more, and it came back burnt. Clearly they fired the upscale chef, but who did they replace him with? Yikes. Then I asked for more ketchup and a refill on my drink (why are you sending ketchup in little cups (?), it will never be enough so just send the bottle, remember you are NOT fine dining.) It took two requests with two different servers (remember they were close to empty) and in time the ice tea showed up, but not the ketchup, that took more work. Explain that please. Note, you are offering a dish called "Crocket Monsieur". Seriously? You can't even proof read your own menu, it's a French dish called Croque Monsieur and there is nothing called a Crocket Monsieur. Man, this is your business treat it with some respect. Or....maybe it doesn't deserve that. Now I could review the salad Nicoise from a couple of weeks ago when it had yet another menu, this one a hybrid between attempted fine dining and upscale diner, but it's no longer on the menu.... or is it? The presentation and dressing was nice, the tuna was of below average quality, tough, precooked medium rare from like yesterday, and the soft-ish boiled egg (a nice custardy yolk) was freezing cold so also cooked the day before? But nothing in that salad was cooked to order, lazy. You have no clue what fine dining is, and when you tried again to do this you earned yourself a health grade of B and angered the people who liked you. What are you trying to do? Kill yourself off and your customers too? Maybe rename your place "Nada." read more

Menu has been changed - I was really looking forward to an egg white omelette with avocado and tomato in it and they weren't able to make that. I settled on an acai bowl which was ridiculous. A few pieces of acai ice chips, next to a half a plate of granola. I have had better acai bowls at the airport in La Guardia. I understand the previous menu was perhaps too much, but slimming it down, raising the prices, and not being accommodating to a vegetarian with high cholesterol is not it ... we probably will just take the tram or ferry to a regular diner from now on. read more

We learned that earlier this month, Nisi got a new chef and the menu is all different. There are separate menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner. So it's not diner style anymore, with a fancier menu. We ate dinner. Salmon tartare was excellent. Miso coconut pappardelle was good, steak was so-so. Crispy Brussels were crispy, as expected and not oily or too salty. Service is excellent. The pancakes with fresh fruit were absolutely divine - so fluffy and delicious, and tons of fresh fruit. Roosevelt Island is where I grew up so I hold this place near and dear in my heart, and even though it has changed incredibly since I moved I always love to go back and visit to see what is still the same. When you walk inside Nisi, it gives you a diner kind of vibe but they have a lot of options for seating. If you like to be inside but with a view or rather spend it outside in the sun they have you covered. There is also a bar inside the restaurant and I would imagine it looks delightful at night because of all the light fixtures I saw throughout the place. My server was very nice, she had a very warm smile, and an extremely welcoming vibe to her. I came in for breakfast, I was on the way to a Mets baseball game so I didn't have much time to sit long. I had an iced coffee with a bagel and scrambled eggs, the food was fine I don't know many places that can drop the ball on a bagel lol but I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone in the area. read more

I highly recommend my favorite restaurant on Roosevelt Island, Nisi Kitchen, to cater your event at your chosen location as well as to dine in at their attractive casual restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. Because of my consistently positive experience dining in the restaurant for the six years I have been living on the island, I chose Nisi to cater my wedding in the rooftop resident lounge of my apartment building on June 28th, 2025. I couldn't have asked for a better outcome. Nisi provided excellent service, from set-up at the beginning involving the addition of tables and chairs, tablecloths, plates, and silverware which they procured, incorporating some decorations I provided, excellent food and beverages of my choice, and a bar tender and server for the entire 4 hours of the event, as well as additional staff for clean-up after the event, leaving the room in pristine condition. I received excellent feedback about the food from my guests. What I especially loved was our ability to choose several different entrees and other food items rather than being limited to only a few choices people usually have at weddings. The service of the Nisi staff was efficient and very pleasant, as has been my experience over the years. And all this incredible quality food and service was at a very reasonable price. One of my first times on the island, and NISI stuck out to me with their unique glass dome infrastructure. My friend and I went on a Thursday night, and were seated right away. Ambiance was very comfortable and casual. They had a very expensive menu, which made it very easy to agree on where to eat. I got the signature nisi burger, which contained angus beef, ham, fried onion ring, onions, and nisi sauce, alongside deluxe fries. My friend chose the lobster ravioli with chicken and rice soup. Both were delicious but and both were large enough portions that we had to take leftovers home. The staff was attentive and friendly, and let us take our time to talk and catch up. On top of that, the prices were very reasonable. We rode the tram over to Roosevelt Island as a first time experience. We thought we would have dinner here and Nisi sounded like a good choice. The food was decent (salmon cooked very well - see pics) but the service is poor. We sat at an outdoor table by the entrance and the employee who first greeted us brought water & menus, then proceeded to chat it up with friends at another table. We waited far too long without even getting drinks. We got up to leave and the guy came over to convince us to stay. He then sent a female server out to us. She took our orders and the service was okay until we were finished and waited far too long for the check and for a box for leftovers. I had to go inside to the register for this. Located right in the middle of Roosevelt Island, Nisi has a glass artsy looking exterior- doesn't really strike you as a place with classic diner fare but I learned my lesson, don't judge a book by it's cover. Service was a bit slow when we were seated, it seemed like there was only 1 server actively working both the inside/outside seating areas, and seats were filling up as it was lunchtime on a Saturday. While we waited a little, it gave us time to peruse the extensive menu- sandwiches, pancakes, pasta, steaks, you name it! I ordered my most beloved of diner food- corned beef hash (there's something comforting knowing that any diner has this dish)- my husband was a bit more adventurous and ordered the Southern Shrimp and Grits. Corned beef hash was topped with two over medium eggs (I like having the best of both worlds- the yolk is slightly gooey and mixes well with the hash but you can enjoy it just as is... *chef's kiss*) with my side of hash browns (you can swap out for fries or grits) with some buttered toast to the side- it was hearty, it was well seasoned, and it was DELICIOUS. Portion was just right too. My husband's shrimp and grits was fantastic as well-the shrimp was plump and juicy, and the broth/grits were flavorful and cheesy. Quality food! This is a totally new deal! Chef Sebastian is friendly and committed to this elevated dining and is taking the time to explain to guests just what his goals are for dining. The girl who took my order was just on point with everything, and knew all the locals which was nice to see. My son had the sliders and I had a pasta added with some chicken cutlet. I've been to RI a few times in the past. Recently my friend moved to RI and invited me to her new apartment. Such a beautiful place in this little island. You get everything, peace at home busy right outside the island. She introduced me to this restaurant and said a lot of good things about it. I thought I should give it a try. We walked to the restaurant and sat outside. The rain just stopped at the time. The staff cleaned the table and chairs for us knowing we wanted to sit outside, nice! My friend tried a few dishes here, she recommended some of the chicken dishes. I picked the chicken with artichokes and mushroom and she ordered the shrimp dish in red sauce. We both chose rice and spinach as the side dishes because we're allowed two each, but didn't realize that both rice and spinach were combined in a bowl, not served separately. Whatever the case is the mixture was tasty with some rosemary taste in it. My chicken was delicious! I really liked this one, never had something like this before so it's a challenge to explain. The chicken breast was tender, the color of the meal was similar to chicken franchise but it didn't taste like one, it had a better taste. The combination of mushrooms and artichokes were pretty good. I'd try and make something like this at home. I tried my friend's shrimp dish but wasn't crazy about the red sauce with the shrimp, it wasn't what I expected. The shrimp dish was average, my chicken dish was above average. Our waitress, Channel, was very good and attentive. She did her job well. The outside seating area faces an old church, the Chapel of the Good Shepherd. The building has a nice view. Placed an online order for takeout. I waited about 30/40 mins as suggested to go pick it up, nothing was ready when I got there. They barely had anyone eating in so not sure what they were waiting for... Then they tell me they're missing an item and offer to replace it. Fine. Another 20 minutes later, my order is finally ready. Once I was home I realized the substitution item was cheaper but they did not even offer to refund the difference. I'll start with the positives! They have a quiet, well-spaced, outside seating area on the wide sidewalk in front. We were walking south on Main Street, never having been on Roosevelt Island before, so the restaurant was on our right. What we didn't notice at the moment was a covered patio on the south side of the building, also with well-spaced tables, and shaded on this beautiful sunny day. At the door is a big sign with a QR code for the menu; I scanned, we saw some sandwiches, went in to order. We saw they have indoor seating but we aren't ready for that, plus it's a lovely day. The young woman who took the order didn't tell us that they offered waitstaff service outside! Maybe she figured we knew? So we said takeout and we'd eat outside but apparently she didn't catch that part. We ordered a tuna melt and their veggie triple decker. Two decaf coffees. We paid, left cash in tip jar, she thanked us and said 15 minutes. We went out to wait and that's when we saw tables in the shade on the side. Almost no one else was there, so we sat down, and in a few minutes a server came over! We were surprised to see her, and she was surprised to hear that we had ordered already! After 20 minutes or so, the woman who'd taken the order brought it out packaged to go. Obviously a misunderstanding, no biggie, we accepted it and ate it there. So the tuna melt was okay, came covered with the fries. When we ordered she said for an extra dollar we could get sweet potato fries, and we said yes, but they only came with the veggie sandwich!? Another misunderstanding - 3 now. The veggie triple decker was so sad. Thin slices of white bread lightly toasted, iceberg lettuce, a few pale tomato slices, and a bit of avocado. I will say, the sweet potato fries were pretty good. We shared the sandwiches and the sweet potato fries. Wouldn't eat there again. read more

We had a party of 4 with us and I must say we all were extremely happy with our food and our bill. I ordered a chicken souvlaki w/ sweet potatoe fries and I wasn't disappointed. Chicken was cooked perfectly and great flavors. Hubby had the gyro, my friends enjoyed there Cobb salad and a ranchero salad ( looked good jalapeños tortilla chips chicken, beans mmmm ) We ended the night with mini baklava's and coffee. I've had fairly mixed experiences here. I feel like I always want this place to be more than it is, which is a very standard, no frills diner. Meals are good, but aren't memorable. I've had memorably bad meals (don't order the fish tacos, my plate came literally dripping in oil), and unmemorable good meals. I'd say you can't go wrong coming here for breakfast-- both sweet and savory breakfast menu items haven't steered us wrong yet. If you see the place looks busy, skip it.
