I visited this location recently with my dad and my boyfriend. Overall, our experience was good, and I would come back to this location. We each ordered a burger and drinks along with an appetizer of cheese curds. Our drinks came out pretty promptly, and my bloody marry was great. Our server did, unfortunately, forget to put our cheese curd order in, so we didn't get them until a few minutes after our burgers arrived. However, all of the food was hot and delicious, including the curds once we got them. Our server was good and admitted to forgetting to put in our cheese curd order. Mistakes happen, and it was not big deal. The quality of the food did make up for it. I would recommend this Nitty Gritty location if you're looking for a good burger. read more

My favorite burgers have always been from the Nitty Gritty. Sometimes the service changes from day to day, but the food is usually great. The other day I ordered over the phone and waited a long time while it seemed like a girl in training tried to figure out how to put my order in. I was patient as she figured it out, and I eventually got my order in. After arriving I paid for my food and left. Once getting back to my home and upon further inspection into the food, we realized that our orders were completely wrong. Luckily when I called them back, I explained my situation and Claire the manager (I think) took my order and had it ready very quickly. When I picked up the food she assured me it was correct as she checked it herself. The new order was delicious as ever and I was very happy. Awful. I avoid leaving negative reviews but I just hope nobody got what I got. The burger, which was hyped a lot, was awful. The patty was ridiculously thin and dry and the bun was almost toasted to a crisp. We also had an assortment of fried appetizer (had to ruin fried finger food) and it was also awfully overcooked. The bee was good, though. So sad...will never come here again. :-( read more

Ugh, the place is completely overrun with 12 year old kids. Maybe that's what it's for though. The space is divided into two relatively large areass. Maybe do a screaming kid zone and a adults only area? Food was ok, the long baskets were kinda odd to eat out of. This place has decent food, but it takes FOREVER!!! We went with a reservation made weeks in advance for a large group on a relatively slow Friday evening (assuming slow given the place was less than half full). We were in a private room and they assigned us 2 servers. The drinks came relatively quickly. Then we were the first table out of the 8-10 in the room to have our order taken about 25 min after sitting down. The next table to get their order taken was right next to us. We had one of the servers, and they had the other. It was clear that they basically divided the room in half. So far, so good. This is where it gets odd and quite annoying. The table right next to us got their order relatively quickly (like about 15 minutes after ordering it). By the time the next table in our group got their food, the first table WAS ALREADY DONE AND LEFT FOR THE EVENING!!! Then it gets really REALLY annoying. The other server had his entire side completed at about 90 min after we first sat down. The other server didn't get his first food order to the table until 2 hours after we arrived!?!?! Plus, half our orders were cold by the time they got to the table although you could tell they must have tasted really good when they were warm. Not sure how this is acceptable for the managers of the place. In reading the reviews, it appears we weren't alone. My advice: Avoid this place unless you are just sitting at the bar or are going with TONS of time on your hands with nothing planned for the remainder of the evening. read more

Great for vegetarians! You wouldn't think this would be a good stop on your list considering it's all burgers. But this is a great place for Omnivores and Herbivores alike. I suggest the best experience would be to stop in on a Tuesday night with friends for a few drinks and TRIVIA NIGHT. The atmosphere here is quieter than the Madison location. But the drink deals are just as good. Food was above average quality. Bartender was knowledgeable and quick. The pricing is your typical sit-down pricing. I would say it was a little expensive for burgers and fries, but like I said - the quality was above average for your typical burger place. My one critique was that the service wasn't great, considering we all ran out of water when we were sitting there for 2 hours or so (playing trivia of course). Also quick shout out to the helpful host that helped us get our cars back after we left it overnight! read more

Overall a tad disappointed I'd say. We were here in one of the private rooms for a friends birthday, a group of about 20 of us. The room itself felt a bit dark and dreary but had tv's and enough room for the appetizers to be put out on separate tables. The people hosting the party ordered waffle fries, cheese curds, wings, and sliders for us all to munch on. Out of the four the best were the burger sliders. The wings were "extra crispy," aka cooked way too long and I personally don't think should have been brought out of the kitchen. I ordered the Olympus Salad to supplement and it was alright. Dressing was pretty good and unique but I was disappointed with the amount of chicken in it. Honestly not sure if I'm dying to come back although I do know they're known for their burgers. Went here with my Mom and Dad because it was Mom's birthday. I don't think very highly of this place. The building is very bland inside, there being no decor, and all brown with no signs of life inside. Our waitress was not attentive and we waited quite a bit for water and our order being taken. They need to focus on the customer and not just write down orders. Also this place is kind of costly. I also would prefer my meal on a plate, not in a basket. The only reasons this did not get one star is you can use a coupon along with a free birthday burger coupon, and the burgers are great! Big surprise, I came here to celebrate a ... birthday! Haha, Nitty Gritty is the bar to go to if you have a 21+ friend or family member with a birthday, because they drink free! We happened to be there the same day as a Packers game, and they had a ton of TVs not only in the bar, but in the dining room where we met for lunch. They have booths for 2 and tables for large groups; from what I saw, the bar layout was pretty spacious. With snow still on the ground during our visit, I will need to stop back during the summer and drink out on their patio too. It really is a place for all ages (if you stop in for lunch or dinner)... maybe not so much after 8pm when it feels more like a bar crowd. I saw children with balloons and celebrating with their family, but mostly college kids and older, there for their drinks. Not sure I'd frequent the bar outside of a birthday... luckily enough of my friends always choose the Nitty to at least start their night! read more

The Nitty Gritty has been pretty fortunate that there are limited options in Sun Prairie for food other than pizza. It's the type of place that is pleasant enough; the building itself is modern and the location is convenient. Parking is a non-issue. Service, in my experience, has been friendly and accommodating. However, the food is nothing stellar. I typically will finish about 2/3 of my meal and not bother bringing the rest home. Today I was hungry and, with limited options in the area, I stopped by and ordered a plate of nachos. It might be just me, but colored tortilla chips are unappealing. Absolutely nothing special about these nachos: standard cheese sauce, black olives, sides of guacamole and salsa, and a giant mound of sour cream in the middle. I chose not to opt for chicken or beef as an add on. Also passed on the jalapeños. The Nitty is a decent option if you have a crowd that needs seating; it's also the Madison-area's standard birthday bar if you're into the special attention bit (singing, bells ringing, balloon, birthday sundae, all you can drink beer, specialty mug). All in all, they should consider stepping up their menu a bit if they want to keep pace with Tipsy Cow and the other brew pubs under construction in their immediate vicinity. read more

Decent birthday bar/restaurant. Ive been here a few times. Twice on my birthday where it was free drinks for me, the birthday guest. I would rate it a 3.5 if I could. The food is decent. I suggest making it a stop for your birthday for at least a few free drinks. I admit its quit entertaining sitting at the bar where they tie a balloon to the wrist of the birthday guests. This location was picked to get together with some friends. While it is stated with friendly people and is a nice enough facility, I did not find the food to be all that not worthy. Mind you there is nothing wrong with the food, I just find their burgers to be rather bland. I have been to this location on two separate occasions and both times I found their burgers to be rather lack luster. A little salt did help but I think they could be better right out of the kitchen. Parking can be an issue on busy nights, an you may be required to walk a block or two. They do have a very nice outside seating area for the warmer months. I went in early to get a table for and get an appetizer going. After sitting at a table for ten minutes without so much as a hello, I went to the bar and got my own beer. I walked out 20 minutes later without seeing the menu. When I closed my tab at the bar for my one beer, I informed the bartender that this was the worse service I've revue in my life! I'm 64! The building that houses the Nitty Gritty is absolutely beautiful. Exposed brick walls, high ceilings, and a great patio to spend a summer night on. While I am not a big fan of their food, I have to give them credit as they have been churning out the same menu (with a few changes) since I can remember. Maybe 25 years ago, the gritty sauce was something to talk about but other restaurants are constantly pushing the envelope on bringing new tastes and flavors to the marketplace. We go here for all of our birthdays (yay birthday club!!). The nacho plate's my fav. The bartenders are nice, although one time one of them was showing a little too much interest in my date. lol I forgave her--he's pretty, after all. I prefer to come here in the warmer weather and sit outside--the patio is really nice and there are nice big TVs, too, if you're into watching the game. The parking lot can be crowded, sometimes you have to park on the street. The bartenders are great about changing the music if it sucks, too. The bathroom is well-kept. I went here for my birthday supper. Nitty Gritty gives the birthday person a birthday mug to fill with free tap beer or soda. Unlimited refills. I decided to order the Heartland Burger which is a grass fed beef burger with cheddar cheese and onion strings on a wheat bun. Tasty but the amount of bread in the wheat bun was too much and I had only half a bun with my burger. The burger was incredibly tasty. I was able to substitute my normal side with a side of onion rings which were delicious as well. My husband made his own mushroom and swiss which was also great. He substituted his side for cheese curds which were absolutely delicious. Our meal was topped off with a free two bite sundae. What a great way to close a meal. read more

Seriously? We never go out for burgers, but we felt like checking out The Nitty Gritty tonight. We decided to sit outside because it was beautiful out. We had at least three different servers walk by us several times without uttering a word to us. Four other groups came in after us, were immediately attended to and served drinks. One server had to completely walk around us in order to get to the other tables. It was impossible to not see us. While we realize we probably weren't purposely ignored, it sure felt like we were. After 20 minutes (yes, we literally timed it) we walked out. We even decided to give them one last shot by talking to the host/hostess, but they were unapologetic and disinterested. The Sun Prairie Nitty Gritty is a fun and friendly environment. I was there for a trivia competition last weekend. I love that the Nitty serves Brunch. I had the Sunrise Burger, waffle fries, and Leinie's Vanilla Porter. But it was good to know I could have had pancakes or other breakfast-y items if I wanted too. Nice servers, friendly bartenders, and good cooks in the kitchen. My brother lives near by so I know I will be back again. read more

Went there for my wife's birthday recently. Both of us are UW grads with fond memories of the downtown location. About a year prior, we ate at the Middleton location and both the food and service were excellent. This experience was a disaster from beginning to end. Even though there were only 4 groups eating at the time, it took about 10 minutes to get menus. It was not a case of being short staffed as I counted 5 waiters/waitresses standing around. Then our waters came out and the glasses were filthy, there were some kind of particulates floating in the water. Our waitress brought new waters but didn't offer an apology. Then some 20 minutes later, we receive our food and the burgers were barely warm and the fries were outright cold. We never saw our waitress again. I had to go upfront to ask for our bill. I worked as a bartender during my last year at the UW and worked at arguably the most popular nightclub/live music venue in Los Angeles right after I graduated so I am very sympathetic to bar/restaurant staff. But this was pure misery. I will say that the manager was very apologetic and I did appreciate the way he handled the situation. He listened to me, never tried to make excuses and was a true professional. He was the only bright spot in an otherwise terrible experience. read more

This place is alright. There are many reviews mentioning long waits. I found our service to be quite average which was pretty good considering we had a group of 13 people; however it was lunch time and pretty slow. All in all, the food was decent. I had the Pulled Pork Mac and Cheese. The pulled pork/toppings were excellent; however the actual mac and cheese was not bad but not amazing. Prices are a little high but not terrible. For a wannabe golfer to enter an establishment and see others putting to win a hamburger is a sight for sore eyes! I'm not saying whether I dank pne or more of my three available putts...but my BBC burger was exquisite! My Loaded Cherry Lemonade went down so smoothly that wayer was never even considered. AND the free ice cream with chocolate syrup for the grandkids MUST have tasted great because I was NOT offered a bite by any of them. I have been to the Nitty several times for drinks as they are the "Birthday Bar." However, this was my first trip for dinner. Completely underwhelming. I ordered the Bruschetta Burger, cooked med. well with the house fries. My burger was cooked beyond well. To say it was dry would be an understatement. It had a single slice of mozzarella that had already started to firm up. This probably means by burger was sitting under the lights for a few minutes. The bruschetta of tomato and fresh basil was delicious. However, i was not given enough. With a burger that doesn't come with any mayo, this was the only wet component on an otherwise boring burger. I ordered a cup of chili, which was $3.75. It was the only way to get chili on my fries. If you order it on your fries, it is still $3.75. The chili was terrible. It is their seasonal soup and it tasted like it came straight from a can or a mix of chili seasonings. I usually go out to eat midweek because I do not feel like cooking. Honestly, I would have rather stayed home and ate frozen pizza. At least then I would have saved money and I knew that my food would be just ok. read more

I called ahead to ask how late they served food (since the website gave me the times for the other locations but not for this one) and was told 11pm. Woo-hoo!! We scurried down there and managed to find very close street parking. I had the falafel burger and loved it (would eat another one right now if I had it). My friend had a burger and liked it a lot. The fries were also good. Right before 11 they started putting chairs on tables and sweeping, which is not the most welcoming thing to see, but I did understand that they didn't want to wait forever for us to finish up. read more

Stopped here with a groups of ladies on a Friday night and was actually surprised we were able to get seated right away. My mother in law and sister in law went in first to grab a table while I tried to find parking which is a struggle in itself. Most of the parking lots in the area are for other local businesses or for apartments. I had to park several blocks away on the street. When I went into the restaurant and asked at the front where the rest of my party is and I was told by a young guy "I don't k ow where they are. You'll just have to walk around to find them." I was a little shocked by this because the place isn't exactly small and is broken up into different areas. I luckily found them quickly. A waitress quickly walked up and got our drink orders. I do not recommend carry out. I waited 10 minutes to pay for the food already sitting on the counter ready. Perhaps I couldn't have been checked out from another server or the bar where there wasn't a long line? I got to the vehicle and checked the bags, and we didn't get the waffle fries or ranch we specifically ordered. I returned to the restaurant, and those things were made without question, which was nice. Then when I got it home with the food, not only was it all cold (other than the newly made fries), we found out they gave us the wrong cheese curds. I won't carry out again. I hate to say this, but we just had the worst fish taco we've ever eaten. We ordered the Baja fish taco which comes with three tacos and chips. It's a good size order, and if you like minced fish in your taco this might be something you would enjoy. However minced fish is not what one expects in a taco, and minced fish is really not very appetizing. We also thought it was odd to get chips without any salsa. This was a disappointing outing.
