Discovered this on instagram and headed here for opening day. A branch of Nonla Vietnamese Street Food in Mattawan, Nonla Burger offers delicious, homemade burgers. But let me tell you about the crispy chicken sando, because you definitely need to get one. The WHOLE THING is crispy, packed with meat, layered with pickled veggies (like on a banh mi sandwich), and sauced with slightly spicy ranch. It's extraordinary. And don't even get me started on the fries, because they are the best fries in town - and, our daughter notes, the best she's ever had. Alas, we were too full for a shake. Next time? There are 5 tables, and 5 parking spaces. You might need to do takeout, if you come when it's crowded. We got there right at 5 and had no wait. Hole-in-the-wall place, cool trendy vibe. Minimal seating, but we went in on a Wednesday at 2ish, so there wasn't a crowd. Hubs got the chicken sandwich & I got the cheeseburger- we shared fries. Fries- awesome. Crisp on the outside, soft on the inside. Chicken sandwich was pretty good, no chewy bits. The coleslaw mix they had was crunchy with a good flavor. My burger was very "meh". A huge 4-5 ring of white onion on top, wayyy too strong. I barely could taste the nonla sauce...it was just a regular burger in my opinion. Ladies up front were nice, seemed to have it together. However, the cooks in the back (2-3 guys?) were kind of obnoxious. Loud, you could hear them cussing. Wow, is this a surprise to discover in a largely forgotten corner of Kzoo! Cute, bright, cozy little place with only a handful of tables and an understandably brisk takeout business. Their burgers, fried chicken sandos (their label for sandwiches), handcut fries, and periodic specials -- we lucked out and discovered their amazing (lightly) fried fish sando the last time -- are fresh, flavorful, and well worth the price. Reasonable overall, and a serious upgrade in quality from any fast food you can find in town. Also have veg burgers, which we haven't yet tried, and feature a special sauce to dress your sandos that is delicious. We'll be making this a regular stop now. this was my first time coming here, I have seen pictures of the burgers and chicken sandwiches online and finally decided to try it. I was not disappointed at all. I told a group of my friends I was going there and they all raved about it. They told me next time to get everything "Nonla style". Listen.. covid should not affect this place. It's the tiniest burger stand in West Michigan and probably one of if not the best. Tons of food for the money, super high quality patty and Nonla sauce sends it over the top. Recently, while traveling through Michigan, I had the chance to try Nonla's, and let me tell you, they really exceeded all of my expectations. The burgers were fresh and tasty with all the necessary trimmings to make a good burger great. The hot chicken sando was fantastic. The breading was so good. I like what Nonla is doing around kzoo. Their burger place is solid. I've been there twice. You order up front and they bring your order to you. Pretty small menu, but I like how they keep it simple. I tried the double cheese and the chicken sandwich (don't worry, I split it with a friend). I preferred the chicken sandwich with the slaw they put on it over the burger (patty was a little thin). Fries are solid. Surprisingly, what I really enjoyed was their pickles!! Treat yourself to a side for $.25. I got a strawberry shake once and I was told they were great...I thought it was ok. We tried Nonla burger after hearing rave reviews from many of our friends. The place was clean and very fresh with its decor. It was strange how you had to wait for a table, but there was no table service and you had to order at the counter or using the app. I was expecting a server to at least help with alcoholic beverages. We ordered and waited almost 45 min for our food. We watched many customers that came in after us get their food before we did. When we got our food, my wife's chicken sandwich was room temperature at best and my burger was crunchy as it was overcooked. I noticed that the smash burgers were 2.4 oz pattys and shouldn't take long to cook. So the cooks had to have given me a burger that had been sitting on the flat top for a while. Nonla Burger presents a unique experience, and one that I thoroughly enjoyed. After two visits, I think it's safe to say that this will be one of my go-to's in Kalamazoo when I'm craving a burger. That being said, my praise comes only partially from the food quality. It also is affected by the fair pricing, pleasant atmosphere, and tailored menu. First and foremost, the burgers and sandwiches will leave you satisfied, with the chicken shining just a bit brighter. Not to be confused: both are exceptional. However, the burgers are a bit generic. They are along the lines of what might be called a "smash burger." In other words, thin patty, usually doubled, with ample toppings. I like this type of meal since it tends to be a bit less filling than thick-cut, half pounders. That being said, the burger which serves as this restaurant's namesake is really not that special. To make it stand out, you have to order "the nonla way," which adds cheese, cilantro, cucumber, and onion. It's certainly better this way; however, it's not revolutionary. It still tastes like a (high quality) fast food burger. The star of the show for me was the chicken sandwich. It's fried fresh and served with pickled greens and jalapenos. It was exceptionally tasty, and had much more personality than the burger. I had both sandwiches on separate occasions, and the taste of the chicken is far more prevalent in my memory than the beef. To be honest, I feel like Nonla Chicken might be a more apt name for this restaurant. A sideshow to the main courses is the fry basket. On its own, it's nothing special. However, like the burger, you can order it the "Nonla Way" and receive the same toppings mentioned above. The toppings seem more appropriate here, creating something between loaded fries and nachos. It's sinful, but delicious. I would suggest ordering this with any meal. It's worth noting that Nonla has a very small menu. I approve of this, as the items therein are clearly carefully handcrafted. I'd rather see a high quality menu than an expansive one. Quality trumps quantity. If you're looking for variety, keep moving along. Finally, come with a full wallet, unless you're just getting a sandwich. Fries and a drink will run you an extra six dollars on top of the price of the burger. In general, it's worth it. However, it does prevent Nonla from being a regular occurrence for me. It's a bit too much of a strain on the ol' purse strings. read more

Watch out for extras! Our experience was a very delicious one, albeit a little pricey. We paid $7 extra just for adding pop and "the Nonla" way to one burger and one fry. Overall, the taste was fantastic! We had a double cheeseburger, a chicken sando, and we split an order of fries. We got "the Nonla way" on the cheeseburger and fries -melted cheese, cilantro, cucumber, caramelized onion, and Nonla sauce. I will say, "the Nonla way" ($1/ea item) is fantastic! The fresh/crunchy cucumber and cilantro cut through the decadent fattiness of the cheeseburger. It was also delicious on the fries. The chicken sando was also great -a nice crunchy, seasoned piece of fried chicken on top of a crunchy carrot slaw. I think the cost of fries is a little steep for the portion. Beverages were also a little steep -but no more so than some other restaurants in the area. Overall we spent $18 for 2 sandwiches, 2 drinks, and 1 fry. I'm not sure I agree on how cheap the food is, but I certainly agree on how delicious it is! The atmosphere was great and the restaurant was clean. Staff were VERY friendly and on top of their game! Parking is a smidge tricky -there are a few spots in the front -but we were told many people picking up orders park on the (road) side of the restaurant or at the Citgo across the street. read more

This place is great! It's somewhat of a run at an Inn-N-Out Burger, with a simple burger menu. The quality of the food is a step above fast food, similar to a gourmet food truck. I've had the shake of the day a few times, the burger, fries, and chicken Sando....all excellent. It's a tiny joint, but the team running Nonla has a great system worked out so that you can sit in the order that you arrived. My only recommendation to Nonla would be to try something unique with your shake of the day. For example- add bits of cake. It will make the "shake of the day" more of an event if you offer something unique every day. After that, I'd open another spot closer to downtown. I had to try this new establishment in town, especially after the rave reviews. We stopped in on a Friday evening. It was a little busy but we were seated fairly quickly and ordered our food. There are only a few tables which is the Nonla style. The menu is very small and basic which is what they are going for. It's written on a chalkboard on the wall. My wife ordered the cheeseburger and I tried the chicken sandwich. The burger was tasty. However, for the price, I felt the patty portion was small and lacking. The condiments were fresh. The crispy chicken sandwich was crispy hot and fresh out of the fryer. The chicken was fresh cut and was a good portion. It wasn't the absolute best I've ever had but it was good. I'm not a fan of fresh cut fries. They never seem to be crispy enough for my liking. However, these were pretty darn good, in fact I finished every one. Ive heard that their fresh dipped shakes are outstanding and by watching them make one, I would probably agree but I didn't have the opportunity to try one at our visit. I'm a great fan of Nonla, and so Nonla Burger was quite the treat. The venue is cozy and small, with seating similar to their Mattawan location where groups of 4 are about how as big as you can fit. The decor is simple but very warm and humble. The parking is a bit tricky, so I recommend carpooling if possible. The menu is simplistic with only a half a dozen options including basic burgers, chicken sandwich, fries, and drinks. The prices are very reasonable, especially for the quality, and the proportions are very fair. I have to agree with the other reviewer Dan A. and say the chicken sandwich, though incredibly large, contained a lot of slimy fat. I typically enjoy dark meat but this sandwich wasn't my thing.
