If you love great Italian food, do yourself a favor and keep driving -- preferably fast. Nonna's appears to specialize in "Italian-inspired disappointment." The cooked penne was sitting on the counter uncovered, just vibing at room temperature like it had officially given up. The sauce? Scooped from a container and reheated with all the passion of a microwave at 2 a.m. The complimentary bread arrived looking hopeful... until we realized it was a square dinner roll slathered in what tasted like imitation garlic and oil -- less Italian trattoria and more middle school cafeteria meets olive oil cosplay. The Chicken Marsala arrived undefeated in battle against any form of tenderizing. This chicken was not pounded thin -- it clearly lifts weights. I needed a steak knife, determination, and possibly a waiver to cut through it. We shared one entrée and a bottle of wine that tasted like grapes filed a formal complaint, and somehow the bill still hit $65. I checked twice to make sure we hadn't accidentally invested in the business. And just when you think the experience is complete, surprise! There's a debit card fee. Don't worry though -- the owner's son (also waiter, host, busboy, and possibly assistant regional manager) will loudly explain it from across the restaurant so the entire dining room can stay informed. read more

Amazing! Thursday around 5 with me and my cousin. Fresh bread and oil...incredible. Upon the recommendation of our waiter, we ordered the boldness. It was served hot, huge and fresh. It was simply delicious and we could have easily split the dish and eaten plenty. Ordered the limoncello cake to go. Everything was wonderful; we shall return. Celebrated my daughter's 30th birthday. They had a large staff and always on top of anything we asked for. The food was very good! The meal portions are very big here. The only disappointment was the calamari. It was not good. All the pastas had great flavor. I can see the cook from where I was sitting in the kitchen. Visiting the St. Augustine island is a must and the variety of food options is overwhelming. Every meal was great but some locals recommended Nonna"s as the best Italian food on the island. They were right, but I'd say it was some of the best Italian food I've had in all my travels. The menu changes slightly as they rotate chef specialty dishes. You start with a basket of fresh homemade bread but I urge you to only eat one serving because your meal portions are humongous. We ate half our portions and took the rest home for her next day. I recommend sharing an entree if you can't take home your leftovers and then you might have room for a dessert! Our group had spaghetti and meatballs, some of the largest ones I've ever seen and filled will flavor. We had a chicken fettuccine with pink sauce, honestly did not know that's basically alfredo and red sauce mixed equally, which I loved. The chicken on this dish was well seasoned and perfectly cooked. Our third dish was pasta bolognese and this is a personal favorite. The sauce was perfection and I loved the capers as an added bonus. I wish I had you to try a dessert but I'm confident it would have also been delicious. Everything tasted like a genuine Italian family recipe. The chicken piccata was with just the right amount of lemon. I really wanted to like this place. We are local and just happened to walk by one beautiful night. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place is quaint and atmosphere is amazing on the oldest street in the U.S. and they had Italian music playing[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]], so we came back a few nights later. Rolls were great, chicken parm was okay, interestingly not breaded. Chicken piccata was bland and shrimp scampi was nothing special. I understand everyone has different tastes but our party of 3 felt the same way. The waiter was a young kid who mumbled and was difficult to understand. He came to the table once and didn't return to ask if we wanted more drinks, etc. Prices are very inflated because it's a tourist town and it appears the add the 20% tip after tax which is not the industry standard. We finally visited Nonna's Trattoria on a spur of the moment date night in St. Augustine. Things were pretty quiet after the storm, so we were excited to get some authentic Italian. The weather was gorgeous, so we enjoyed our meal outside on the sidewalk. The inside of the restaurant is pretty small, so it was nice to have room to spread out a little. Service was perfection. Our server was friendly and polite, and everything came out wonderfully. We started with warm garlic rolls, that were soft and soaked in butter, garlic, and herbs. Delicious. We also each enjoyed a glass of pinot, which was perfect on a fall night. I did find the menu a little limited, but ordered the chicken marsala with a side of penne Alfredo, while my husband got the chicken parm with penne and red sauce. Both plates of chicken were tender and well cooked and seasoned. And the pastas were great as well. This place lives up to its name! The food and ambience were 10 out of 10. We had Nino as our server and he was very personable and knowledgeable about the menu. It is hard to find great service like that nowadays. We live about 45 minutes from this place, but would come to St Augustine just to eat here again. I would certainly recommend this place to anyone! The service was friendly and attentive. The serving sizes were very generous. I had the vegan pasta puttanesca, which was chock full of tomatoes, olives and capers and the flavor was incredible! They also prepared a vegan version of garlic rolls for me. I also had a small salad that was very fresh and the balsamic dressing was delicious. My husband had the shrimp pasta - he is very particular about seafood, and said the shrimp were fantastic! The pasta for both dishes was done perfectly. The food was below average - everything seemed thrown together with seemingly no thought given to either the preparation nor the presentation. Our serviceperson was virtually non-existent. We were never given a second glance once our lukewarm food was delivered on cold plates. And the mandatory 2% con(?) junk fee + automatic 20% tip was highly offensive. Shameful. We love St Augustine. There are many good restaurants in town - we've found several that have become favorites who are run by caring and conscientious chefs. Not here. What an AMAZING restaurant. The staff and food, just a wonderful. Our server's name was Nino, and he was kind enough to share the history of his family restaurant. It was started by his late grandfather 15 years ago, and although it is sad that he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through his original recipes still used today, to be enjoyed by every patron. For starter's, I'm not the biggest fan of Italian food. My wife is though, and well, you know how that goes. We had the spaghetti and meatballs and penne a la bolognese and they were both delicious. Even the bread was terrific. They kept bringing more because we couldn't get enough. And then we finished our meal off with their tiramisu, was one of the BEST tiramisu I have ever had. The restaurant is in small quaint area of the district. We came at night and it was a really cute vibe overall. The table we had was also facing the gentlemen cooking our food, which was really cool to see. The service was extremely quick and accommodating. I saw the food completed and walked over to my table within seconds, so it was nice and fresh. My bolognese pasta was insanely good. This is my staple dish to test out an Italian spot and I'm glad I did. It's also a huge portion and the bread that comes with the meal is A1. Highly recommend! read more

We stopped in for an early dinner. The place was 100% empty. We were 2 but were going to he joined by our daughter & her boyfriend. The girl told us she couldn't seat us because we were an incomplete party...mind you there were no 2 top tables in there, all the tables seated 4 or more. Divine little place with delicious food. We went in during a thunder storm last year. They were so kind to us. On our return to St. Augustine this year, we came as a group of 12. The waiter, an Irish guy who was really efficient and nice, put 3 tables together and effortlessly accommodated us. They don't take reservations. We erred in arriving two minutes before opening time and were asked to wait outside. The service was slightly brusque but "OK." Overall, the food was good, but not extraordinary. One may note that the menu (see photo) is significantly different than that shown on-line on various web sites and the while the current prices are probably fair given this is a tourist destination and they're not feeding locals, today's prices are markedly higher than those shown elsewhere. We didn't plan on discovering the best Italian food we've ever had...but that's exactly what happened. We met Adomo, the owner of Nonna's Trattoria, just a few blocks away while walking downtown St. Augustine. After telling him my wife is Italian and I've been all over Italy, he said, "Then you're going to love my restaurant," and personally walked us there. He called ahead to his son Nino (who runs the place) and told him to get a table ready and spoil us. Nino greeted us warmly and did just that; from the hospitality to the food, everything was perfect. I told Nino to bring out whatever appetizer he thought best. He delivered ravioli in a rich marinara sauce that was absolutely divine...like handmade pillows of heaven. For dinner, I refused to look at the menu and said, "Bring me whatever your dad would recommend." Nino brought out a chicken parmigiana with fettuccine Alfredo. One bite and I audibly sighed in delight..my daughter even commented she'd never seen me react that way to food before. Everyone else at the table had a similar reaction. For dessert, we let Nino surprise us again: tiramisu and a cannoli. Both were flawless. Light, creamy, authentic. Bottom line? This isn't just a meal--it's a family-run culinary experience that rivals anything I've had in Italy. Friendly, passionate, authentic. Nonna's is now the gold standard by which we'll judge all other Italian restaurants. "A tavola non si invecchia."
