I ordered carry out from Noodle Box for dinner last night. The food was hot, but that's the best I can say about it. The gyoza were fried to oblivion, just short of inedibly burnt. My "chicken karaage box" contained over-fried balls of thickly breaded chicken swimming in a heavy, dark sauce. This dish should have been called General Tso's, it was so far from what karaage should be (bite-sized chicken thigh pieces with a light potato-starch coating, lightly fried, no sauce). I ordered through Uber Eats and when my food arrived it had a topping that was not listed anywhere on the menu that was on Uber Eats or the menu on their website. We were very pleased with our visit to Noodle Box. The place is small and assuming but located right on King Street. It wasn't busy at all when we went on a rainy Saturday for lunch. The food came out fast, piping hot, and in generous portions. We got the Pad Thai (standard), the Drunken Noodles (highly recommend!), and an order of the Chive Dumplings (yum!). The chive dumplings were unlike any dumplings I've ever had; I believe they are also called Thai chive cakes. They're fried and slightly sticky because they are made with rice and tapioca flour. Anyway, definitely worth trying. Our order came out to about $26. For two people, not bad. This is a great place for quick but fresh food. I didn't have to wait a while for my food to be prepared. It is on the corner so make sure to find parking on a side street. The atmosphere is hip/trendy and there staff was polite and helpful. I ordered the spring rolls and pad thai. The spring rolls were SUPER! They were crunchy and the inside filling was veggie, so if you don't eat meat be sure to add these to your order. For the pad thai that was pretty amazing as well. It was our first time ordered from them and they burned the tofu in my wife's meal. They ruined her meal. How do you burn tofu?

Old Town Alexandria is refining its palate in terms of the Asian food scene. This space was once occupied by Red Mei, or as I like to call it, Red Meh (https://www.yelp.com/biz/red-mei-alexandria), a pan-asian fast food joint serving up a mix of 4 dollar pho, 8 dollar Thai curries, and 8 dollar Americanized Chinese favorites such as beef and broccoli and orange chicken. Other atrocities which I don't even have to try but can surmise would be the "Oriental salad" and the "Sriracha salad". While cheap eats are fairly common in Chinatown, serving such cheap fare on prime real estate such as King Street likely means smalller portions or inferior ingredients so the ratings were definitely reflective. Imagine my delight when it shuttered and was replaced by a hip fast casual concept called Noodle Box, which actually has a cohesive theme (primarily Thai, with a few other noodle themed dishes borrowed from its Asian neighbors (yakisoba and kung pao noodles) with updated modern decor and noodle and rice dishes cooked to order on a flaming wok. While the flavors are still geared towards a more Western palate, they do not shy away from the spice in the chicken basil rice box and the appetizers are well, much more appetizing such as crispy and fresh roll tofu and chive dumplings. An excellent upgrade from its predecessor which will hopefully be a harbinger of things to come (Asian Bistro a few blocks down, your days are numbered!) read more

I ordered crispy spring rolls and veggie drunken noodle - delivery. The crispy spring rolls were delicious - crispy and full of flavor with a side of sauce. Beyond that, I'm not really sure what I just ate. Facts: The food arrived hot and on time. I paid $2 extra for egg and that's exactly what I got - some scrambled egg (like the kind you might get at breakfast buffet) tossed on top of the entire dish in a clump. They also included a fork and a napkin. Opinions: I'm not sure if they're trying to hide the salt by dumping chili oil on everything or hide the chili oil by using a salt block. Either way, now I need a large beverage. The dish didn't have that sought-after pan fried wok taste, but didn't seem microwaved, either. Shrug. Not offensive, but definitely not an epicurean delight. Final answer: $30 after tip for some food that was unremarkably edible. I'll be looking for another Thai restaurant next time I'm in Alexandria. read more

I tried here last week with a friend and we enjoyed our take out meals. If you're familiar with the previous restaurant, this is not owned by the same individuals and they've made some changes - sustainable containers, new decor, easier use of credit cards, and completely new menu. This menu, while not "health food," appears to be cooked in a more healthier way. We had the curry and the thai vegetable fried rice bowls. Both were tasty and a fairly healthy option. Portions were generous and they were loaded with vegetables and protein (tofu for me and chicken for my friend). Staff was friendly and the price was still very reasonable for this area. I am so glad that the former Red Mei location didn't stay closed too long - this restaurant fills a great need for fast casual dining in Old Town, especially for the employees that work here. Great hole in the wall place when you want a quick, delicious and inexpensive plate. I recommend the pad see ew or chicken basil. They are currently given away free Thai teas with the order of an entree. I do not recommend this place, neither for food OR drinks/boba. I ordered the pad thai with veggies and the green tea lemonade (no boba). Unfortunately I don't have pictures of anything because I ate and drank only about a quarter of each and disposed the rest. The pad thai was not spicy, but I think you might have to request it to be. It tasted almost too sweet and and lacked the traditional peanut sauce flavor, and the vegetables had an off putting smell and looked like they used frozen ones. The green tea lemonade, when brought out, I was very surprised by the bright almost neon green color of the drink. It did not look promising. And it wasn't--it did not have the classic green tea flavor, and had no tartness one would expect from lemonade. Went a few days ago during their grand opening. I had the glass noodle pad Thai and my girlfriend had rice with green curry - both of us had chicken. The service was very friendly and the food was great and came out quickly. Pad Thai was very flavorful and really good with the vermicelli style glass noodles. The green curry had a real nice kick to it, but wasn't overbearing. I am glad to see another fast casual option in Old Town! Will definitely be back soon! I can't speak much to the atmosphere of this place since COVID has everyone doing to go or delivery but what I can say is that they have some pretty tasty food. I love Asian food of many kinds and nothing beats a place with good noodles. I ordered beef drunken noodles, crispy basil chicken, and spring rolls. The beef in the drunken noodles was nice and tender. the noodles itself were good but I think it would've tasted better fresh in the restaurant. The crispy basil chicken was soooo good. It's a rice dish but has some good spice and flavor. The spring rolls were nice and crunchy and went well with their Thai chili sauce. They have vegetarian options like tofu as well. I can't speak for other items on the menu, but this was the worst Pho I've ever had. I should have known not to order it when I asked for Pho Tái, and they didn't know what I was asking for. The broth was pretty bland (which I believe was actually chicken broth and not beef broth), bean sprouts were not fresh & basil was literally brown (see photo), and there was no cilantro jalapeños or lime. Hole in the wall place. They had multiple woks going at the same time. So the dining area was constantly filled with smoke and aroma. Thankfully it all smelled delicious. I'm a fan of Noodle Box! So glad that they opened in old town Alexandria- there aren't a lot of affordable places to eat. Noodle Box is really fast, tasty, and cheap! We've been 3 times so far. Here's what I would recommend: Glass noodle pad thai with chicken ($9)- this is my favorite! I'm really picky with my pad Thai and I was skeptical about the noodles, but it really pairs well. The noodles are really thin and hold a lot of flavor. They give a lot for this dish and it is sure to fill you up! Yakisoba noodles with chicken ($9)- my second favorite. Has a unique ginger flavor which we all enjoyed. I liked the texture of the noodles too. Spicy basil chicken ($9)- this comes with Jasmine rice and a perfectly fried egg. Lots of basil and just the right amount of spicy. Pad see yew with beef ($10) and the drunken noodles with beef ($10) are both okay as well, but weren't fantastic or anything. I personally wouldn't order them again but they were worth a try. What to skip- garden stir fry rice box and the Thai fried rice. Both were a little lacking in flavor and just weren't as good as their other options. If you're looking for an appetizer, try the chive dumplings ($5). They're not really what you would expect a dumpling to be, more like a fried triangle, but it was very good. Loved the dipping sauce too. Also, try the Thai iced tea! ($4) the perfect drink to pair with your meal. The interior of Noodle Box is very nice and it would definitely be a nice place to enjoy a quick casual meal with family and friends. Beautifully decorated and very clean! We've gotten take out twice and they are very fast and the food stays hot til you get home. We like the bowls that they use too- not the cheap Styrofoam ones you usually get from Asian takeout places. Staff is very nice too- I especially liked the girl who works the counter- she is so friendly and sweet! It's pretty hard to go wrong here. Every time I've come here for lunch it's been the best decision of my day. The Pad Thai is a solid staple plate, as well as their chicken fried rice. If you're looking to fill up on warm delicious food this is your spot. It's super casual, not a lot of space if you're coming with more than 4 people, but you can make your own space for sure. I just received my order from Uber Eats. The food was hot and tasty, however, it was so spicy hot that I could not eat it. I asked specifically for the dish to be MILD and this didn't happen. I just wasted $20 for a meal that I can't eat. Drunken Noodles is supposed to be spicy but when you ask for the mild version, you should get it. So disappointed. read more

This restaurant caught my eye a few weeks ago and I finally made a visit. I'm so glad I did! There are a lot of different noodle, as well as rice dishes, on the menu. My order included Drunken Noodles with chicken, Chicken fried rice, and spring rolls. The spring rolls were fresh and crispy. The drunken noodles were a little spicy, but such good flavor in every bite. The chicken fried rice was good and standard, probably a safe bet for those unsure of what to order. This is a great place for quick and easy Thai noodle dishes, but what I especially like is the Crispy Tofu (Tofu Tod). The portion is generous and it is a perfect choice for comfort food on a casual night out. I really like coming here, and it is a much welcomed improvement from Red Mei. I am confused by something though, and that is the use of fish sauce (nam pla) in the dishes. My wife is a vegetarian, and on the previous four or five times we have been here, she ordered the Glass Noodle Pad Thai, without fish sauce. Every time the person taking the order said "no problem", and we enjoyed the dish. Last night, however, we were told that it was not possible to make it without the fish sauce, which disturbed my wife quite a bit, because if this is the case, she was lied to about the dish on all previous occasions. Maybe someone could answer this question for me, and any other vegetarians who might also be considering your restaurant? I know that many other Thai places provide that option. read more

I work nearby and have ordered takeout from here probably a dozen times. When the restaurant first opened, I was impressed with the food, but over the months I feel like the quality has dropped. The chive dumplings are kind of weird. They are not your traditional dumpling. It's more like a triangle of fried dough mixed with chives. I am not a huge fan. The glass noodles Pad Thai used to be my go-to, but lately the ratio of noodles to everything has been off -- the dish is sometimes 70% noodles and 30% everything else! The flavors, however, are pretty decent. The only other dishes I have tried have tasted rather americanized and not particularly authentic or inspiring. I have had a decent experience picking up food here; it is generally ready promptly when I arrive. I had a hiccup once with my order getting mixed up, and they gave me both dishes. Both dishes were outstanding, honestly the first Thai restaurant where the noodle is well seasoned and isn't too expensive.
