Nook is a great place if you want a glass of wine in the evening along with a hummus and veggie plate or perhaps a tasty sandwich or salad. In the morning and afternoon they have wifi and outlets to plug in to get some work done. At around 6pm they turn off the wifi (which I appreciate) to make it a hang out spot rather than a dinner place for work-a-holics. One of the aspects I like most is that it is located on a trolly track corner, which makes it an excellent spot for people watching. With both indoor and outside seating, this is a good place to hang out rain or shine. read more

I have been looking for a go-to cafe, and I think I have finally found one. The cafe is located on the corner of Hyde & Jackson. The ambiance inside is very casual yet romantic. The place serves coffee, wine, beer, patry, and many entrees. The place plays smooth jazz, which I find very soothing. Nook makes great coffee. There is outside seating as well as the inside. Each table have fresh flowers, and the candles are lit in the evening. This is a great place to get your coffee, get some work done, but also a great place to have a meal with friends and loved ones. Would like to like Nook, it's the only cafe in my neighborhood really, but it's just...so mediocre. No WiFi on weekends, overpriced, knack for hiring rude staff, and my girlfriend and I caught some food poisoning to boot from them a few months back. Nook is my "go to" cafe. Whether I want to work on something, hang with some friends or just take a breather, it never disappoints me. It's super cozy and welcoming. They have a great variety of food/drinks too. I always love getting their quiche of the day, and a brownie! Yum! Another great addition to this cafe is the location, you get the cable car flying by every so often and since its on a corner, you get sunshine beaming through if you're lucky. It's very cute -- I like the big windows. It has free Wi-Fi, which is handy, but which also meant that during my recent visit there were a dozen attractive twentysomethings lined up at the tables along the wall, all ignoring each other and staring at glowing LCD screens. Nook is great--I just moved nearby and need new brunch places, and I can def see myself as a regular here. I had the waffle (wish it was waffleS though) but my boyfriend got the breakfast wrap, which looked gorgeous and made the dude next to us ask what he got. Update: Ok this is getting ridiculous. The one time i finally get myself to go in there after eating at U-Lee's across the street for coffee.. i was disappointed.. i ordered a cafe au lait.. simplest drink to make after a house coffee.. just half coffee and half steamed milk.. but somehow i managed to be in that cafe for more than five minutes.. a customer before me ordred a cappuccino so i gave the lady some slack.. cuz i have a hard time making the foam.. when it finally came to make my drink.. she realized the coffee was not made.. so i had to wait some more.. ugh it sucked waiting for the drink.. i got my drink added sugar in and it was not satisfying.. the coffee was burnt.. meh.. nook gets two stars for the cute decor, candles that makes everyone look better in that light, and the station for people to add milk, cream or sugars was very neat.. read more

Went there for a nice weekend brunch with my buddy, Geoff W. Great little place, very cozy and aptly named as it is tucked into the most charming spot. The location is right on the 27 bus line so it was a relatively short trip from the Tender Nob to Nob Hill. We both started with coffee, I had a lovely mocha while we decided on what we were having. I hadn't had a quiche in a while and I was happy that it was served fresh with salad. I indulged in a second mocha after the meal. This is a great place to meet casually with one or two friends, but not for much more as it is really very small and seating it tight. For that same reason, I'd recommend people with kids to bring those who are not in strollers as there is no where to park one and no misbehaving kids as a yelling child in such close quarters is no fun for anyone. The staff was polite and efficient and made the experience pleasant. I wish the weather had been nicer that day because they also have two small cafe tables for outdoor seating. :) read more

This place is really cute! The people who work there are friendly and patient too. And as a bonus, they are vegan-friendly - which definitely earned them points from me and my roomie who are trying out the vegan way for 2 weeks (day 12 today!) They have happy hour every day from 5-7, which I've never experienced, but is always nice to have around the corner :) As for what I had last weekend while studying there: - avocado, cucumber, tomato, sprouts sandwich on ciabatta roll (i said no dijon, and the nice lady taking my order asked if i wanted olive oil instead so that it wouldn't be too dry.) - carrot cake (vegan!!!) - and brownie to go (also vegan!!!!!!!) the sandwich was tastier than i expected. i gobbled it up so fast. it also came with a salad which had a light dressing. next time i want to try the vegan tamale pie!! A word of advice though, the cafe is located right on the corner where the cable car goes by...it is not quiet. i don't mind some noise while i'm studying, but if you are someone who needs silence...don't go to Nook! more room for me :) read more

Really great cafe/ wine bar/ sake bar/ deli. It's kind of small so hopefully you can score a table. Good vibe; people chillin', sippin on lattes and reading/ working. I got a great Prosciutto di Parma sandwich on a crusty baguette. The prosciutto melts in your mouth. In addition, the bread was brushed with olive oil, had some parmesan cheese and slices of tomatoes - that's it. Very simple yet great ingredients. Sometimes that's the best way to have an Italian sandwich. On the side was a little green leaf salad with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Again, simple yet fresh. The guy making the sandwiches and the woman behind the counter were very friendly. My girlfriend got a melted brie sandwich with cranberry sauce. Apparently it was the shiznit. read more

Minus one star for the music being really loud for a coffee shop type place. It is hard for me to hear myself think in a place like this. eat: turkey brie cranberry sandwich, yummy! I tried their tomato mozzarella sandwich and was not nearly as impressed. This place gets packed during the day with students, people who work at home and those who don't have to go to work. They each take up their own two person table, so when it is packed, it's really packed. They have two 4 seater tables set aside for people who are eating and they are "Laptops not allowed at these tables" Kind of annoying when you want to eat and do work and people are sitting alone at tables that sit two people, especially when you are going with a friend. For the past two years, I've been one of the lucky souls who lived around the corner (literally, one corner) from this place, and it made my SF 48,638,634,526,215 times better, +/- 5. Nook has great ambience and a wonderful location right next to the Cable Car line (Powell-Hyde). The food is delicious, and the beer/wine prices are really good, especially during happy hour! The tree lined streets really seal the deal. If it's warm, sit outside. If not, enjoy the large window views! As a neighbourhood local, I appreciate that they limit the wifi so that my hungover tooshy can squeeze in there for a morning nosh. Quaint little corner cafe in a picturesque part of the city called Russian Hill. The extra views from being a corner cafe allow for maximum sun and people watching,waving at the tourists passing by on the trolley, and looking at dogs leashed to the outside seating tables where their owners are enjoying a coffee. No table service - they call out the order, you claim it and take it back to your table. Not good for large groups either - groups of 4-6 at the largest only. It also seems to be a place for those who enjoy calm and quiet (the cafe doesn't even seem to play light background music), so leave obnoxious cell ringtones, loud friends and collicky babies home. Food is all right. Not commercial grade stuff, but not executive chef stuff either. Good for small bites, light meals and snacks. read more

I go to the Nook at least once a week. Partly because I live across the street and mostly because I can always count on fresh coffee, fruit, veggies, and pretty much anything else I want every time I go. Oh and because I live across the street. I think my go to things there are the oatmeal with fruit and a non-fat vanilla latte. I've also had salads and sandwiches, which are good. The coffee is wonderful though. It is slightly pricier than I would like but the convenience and reliability are totally worth it. My one complaint is that they take FOREVER! The only reason they don't get 5 stars is for customer service. None of them seem very happy and are rarely friendly. And you can't just get in and get out. They take a while to make fairly simple dishes. It's usually pretty crowded in there but even when its not they take a long time to make everything. Other than that I love the Nook! read more

The name says it all. This little nook has so much personality! They have the yummiest sandwiches (my favorite being the avocado, gruyere, and mango chutney), great coffee, and alcohol! There is live music on some nights of the week, and happy hour specials. I like to come here for a snack and sit and read. You can usually find a range of people there - some working on their laptops while drinking coffee, some dressed up on a date drinking beer, and some families eating lunch together. It was one of those amazing SF days where the weather was still in the 80's at 5pm and they had a table open outside. Great Happy Hour experience. This is a good place to relax. Wine, coffee shop feel, outdoor seating, tucked away street... I had a glass, maybe three, sat in the sunshine, read and watched people go by. They have a good happy hour deal and the coffee shop feel evolves to full wine bar at about 8ish. LOTS of laptops before then. There might be a little better people watching a couple blocks away on Polk...but this is more relaxing. It's also cool that there are TWO more wine bars within a block. So put on your Cape Cod Sunday afternoon and lounge like that's all you've ever done. read more

This is the kind of place that every neighborhood wishes it had. A short menu of tasty food, good coffee and some quirky, yet enjoyable employees. It's a great space that's small, yet still has plenty of room for everyone. The cable car rattling by gives it a great san francisco vibe, and you can easily mock the tourists waiting outside without them hearing you ;-) Took our kids for breakfast, and it was fast, easy and fun. Been hearing so much hype about this place from a couple of my friends that it turned out to be kind of a letdown. Perhaps happy hour is a totally different story (I did see $1.50 PBRs on the board!), but I came here for my Sunday brunch/lunch and found it to be nothing special... Place is quite charming - but tiny and cramped. As great as free wifi is, when the place is this small - I don't recommend offering it. 75% of the tables were occupied by one student who had obviously finished their one order of coffee hours ago and was just there with their laptop out, papers strewn, wifi-leeching. Not saying I wouldn't do the same..but hugely inconvenient to the weekend customers during key meal times!! For food we ordered: --Scrambled Eggs & Bacon ($7.95) - off their "specials" board, comes with side of baguette,l but nothing special at all. Bacon was paper thin - but at least that makes is crispy! --Smoked Salmon Bagel ($7.70) -- with cream cheese, $6.95 without) -- Good amount of salmon, but I think it's silly to charge 75 cents extra for a spread of cream cheese. --Café Au Lait ($2.45) - Pretty good coffee in a nice big cup like I like it. Nook is a cozy coffee house/cafe that doesn't feel imposing at all. It's very low-key, so you feel like you can do your own thing. Plus, like most of the other awesome coffee houses in San Francisco, they serve wine and beer! It's a good place to get some studying done, except they dim the lights and bring out the candles around sunset, which makes reading a little difficult. The food is yummy. Mango chutney & ham pizza! Sounds weird, but I have a soft spot for anything with mango chutney because it reminds me of camping in Africa--good memories. Anyway, service is impressive especially when you consider that there are only two baristas who handle the registers, java orders, and food orders. Happy hour rocks here! Good house wine. read more

I've been here for happy hour which is great, especially if you want to have some wine with a friend and catch up. Perfect. But for brunch....SUPER STRESSFUL. Why? Because these folks with laptops monopolize the tables and there is a line of people ordering brunch or full meals while these bloggers, students, what have you...order one coffee and stay there for three hours, while we wait and stare at them to see if they have the courtesy to know we are ordering a meal....while they could just go to a coffeeshop. The shrimp quesadilla had a nice kick, but was made w/flatbread which surprised me. But, as was pointed out to me, their specialty isn't mexican and they serve various hummus dips so it makes sense to keep it all in the family. What a great neighborhood treat! I've been here on a number of occasions either just dropping in for happy hour, grabbing a casual brunch or even for a friend's going away party (yes you can rent the place out!) A funny story about the going away party. We couldn't hit the bar minimum because the drinks there are too cheap! The food is all delicious and a great place to drop in for a drink or small bite. Another cool thing they do is limit their wifi to during the weekdays to keep it a bit lively or available for people to mingle evenings and weekends instead of having every table being occupied with people working away. read more

Oh Nook. What would I do without you?? All I have to do is roll down the hill and I can get anything from a latte to sangria... a hummus plate to shrimp quesadilla! This is pretty much my go-to spot. The menu is pretty simple and not exactly "special" but everything is delicious. I often come here on my day off to snuggle in with a coffee and a book and sometimes bring my laptop if im feeling really jazzy because they have free wi-fi. They also have a great happy hour. I like this place. It is sunny and warm (when the city is sunny and warm). I often imagined lolling away on a Sunday morning, reading the paper, having coffee and a pastry. Key point for me, this place is not overrun with digirati! Don't give the wifi away for free, in fact I think you should increase the cost. Each I have been here, it has been good. Consistency matters. The menu is pretty basic, but fresh and tasty. The lattes are also well made, coffee roast is good, the baristas know what they are doing (which is key). read more

When my old roomie and I were apartment hunting in San Francisco way back when, we stumbled upon Nook after a long day trudging around the city. I immediately thought that this was the quintessential SF hangout spot - cheap drinks, good food, friendly staff, free wireless, unbeatable atmosphere. Now, I'm happy to say, I live only a few blocks from Nook and have been a frequent patron in the past few years. When I was unemployed, I went to Nook to use their free wireless and job hunt. When I was hungover, I went to Nook for their egg, cheese and ham bagels. Now, I pretty much go there for their $2.50 happy hour red and white wines. Nook is a great little oasis in the heart of SF. This is one of my favorite cafes in the city. It's so relaxing, and they have a very open feel to the space. There's also a few outdoor tables available. The staff is really cool. I've spent hours here studying or playing Scrabble with friends, and no one bothers you. They're suppose to have wifi but I couldn't connect with my laptop... Last, but not least, they have happy hour every day! $4 cocktails - can't beat that! It could get pretty crowded and hard to get a table, but I don't blame them. I love this little spot. It's like a block and a half away from my apartment. I always love getting the salmon on crostini. Soo good, w/creme fraiche, shives & lemon. My sis got the turkey sandwich w/brie & cranberry sauce. Delicious. I got the chicken pesto sandwich. Good, but not as good as the turkey. All plates come with a salad :) Highly recommended.
