We came here for a coffee on a Thursday evening. It was a few minutes before their closing time, but they happily let us in and and the owners here were the nicest people that we have seen. I didn't wanted a beverage in our group, but the owners insisted on giving me a tea or coffee on the house. We had really nice conversations with them and had a good laugh. Hit it before it becomes a major tourist stop...the cable car swinging by is just too cute, especially on a sunny afternoon! Truly a great neighborhood nook to hide out to write or do work. I found it pretty easy to zone out in. It's a busy and tiny place so definitely have a back-up plan or be prepared to wait. Once you do claim a seat (and an outlet for your laptop), you can relax. No pressure to get up even if you are just having a cup of tea that you finished awhile ago. Since I was visiting from Chicago, I was very excited when I saw this place. It is definitely a place for the locals. I'm confident I was the only person from out of town. You won't find any tourist here! This was a perfect place for a relaxing sunday afternoon lunch. It's a great neighborhood corner cafe/coffee shop. I felt like a local when eating there. For my meal, I tried the Prosciutto sandwich, the soup du jour(potato tomato), and an iced chai to drink. The sandwich was excellent, flavorful and surprisingly filling. I usually don't order sandwiches like that, but I really enjoyed it. The soup was also just as good! I would definitely go here if you are looking to eat somewhere that locals eat. It's the complete opposite of the fisherman's wharf scene. The only downside is that seating is kind of limited and so is the menu. But again, it's a coffeeshop. read more

What a great happy hour. The house red is actually a decent blend for the mere $2.95. Small space so seating could be tough, but if you land a spot, a perfect place for a small group to gather. Excellent! I was looking for a nice glass of wine with free wifi in a decent place (a tall order?). This more than fit the bill and, as others have said, the employees were very nice which is not to be taken for granted these days. I give this place 4.5 stars. I love their hummus, olive tapanade and artichoke sandwich, and I've been getting it regularly for years. In my opinion it's one of the best sandwiches in town. I just wish they would change up their menu a bit or add another vegan sandwich item, it would be great to have more to choose from! Love this place! Whenever I'm in the city I always stop in for a coffee or a quick bite. The staff is friendly and the food is delicious. Perfect if you just want a light meal. The cafe is pretty tiny, but I always opt to sit outside anyway. It's the perfect location to people watch and to see the cable cars go by. Their happy hour is super cheap, and if you go in on a Monday, they have happy hour sangria all day long! Definitely a place to stop by if you're in the neighborhood. read more

Nook is well located and has a pleasant atmosphere. In general, they seem to encourage guests to use the space freely (work with on a laptop, use the wifi, socialize, etc.). The staff preparing the food don't seem to know much about food preparation. It's inconsistent, and sometimes seems sloppily put together. The environment is classic San Francisco: a calm café right in the path of the Hyde Street Trolley line. The space is light and airy and pretty well-kept. I had a great sandwich and salad for $11 and they have the best brownies in the known universe (or at least in this zip code). The young woman who served me was polite and thoughtful, giving me several options that weren't on the menu and giving me extra sides as well. But over the course of an hour that I snacked and enjoyed a book, I had to listen to another female server absolutely police the community every chance she got. "You can't be on the WiFi over 2 hours." "You can't sit at this table unless your party is 2 or more." "Bathrooms are for customers only." Not only did I hear each of these phrases multiple times (which really sours the mood to hear all these well-to-do latte-drinkers getting scolded), but there are PLENTY of hand-written signs to reiterate The Policies in case you missed the verbal warnings. In an establishment whose typical patrons are FAR from troublemakers, I'd say the staff needs to seriously ease up on laying down the law. It's Nob Hill, not Communist Russia. Relax. read more

I don't understand all the great reviews. This place has slow service and high prices. I don't know if the ownership changed but it used to be much better. I live a block away and have been in here numerous times and it's definitely getting worse and worse. Finally! The other day I went in there to grab my every morning latte and saw the note that made my day! It seems they finally realized that Nook was turning into a hopping internet cafe, leaving no space for people like me who just want to go there after work to enjoy a good glass of wine and chat with some friends. The good news is, they changed the rules: Now people can use their free wifi only on weekdays until 6pm, after that everybody can hang out and enjoy some wine, have a few cocktails, or try one of their delicious small plates. It's a good idea to me. The ambiance is much better without all the computers. I will be back at night! read more

The first time I walked into Nook for a morning coffee, the barista smiled and said, "Oh, you're new!" He was right- I had just moved to the neighborhood the day before! I was immediately hooked on the quaint neighborhood cafe vibe, and it has since become my favorite place to stop for a morning coffee, to relax with a good book for an afternoon, and to stop off for a $3 glass of wine after work. You can nestle into Nook at any time of day. Their menu of food and drinks offers enough choice to force a second visit- it's not easy deciding on just one thing. A personal fave for lunch is the avocado, Gruyere & mango chutney sandwich, but I also start salivating and running for the door when I think about their turkey, melted brie & cranberry sauce sandwich. I've never ordered from their breakfast menu, but I imagine it's up to snuff. As for their drinks, they do a Happy Hour from 5-7 p.m., seven days a week! Their wines are $3 and their cocktails are $4. They have an extensive list of soju and sake cocktails- the Soju Mint and the Sake Sour are top notch. They do offer free WiFi until 6 p.m, during the week, and have plenty of outlets. You won't have to engage in outlet-hovering-warfare. But be warned, they designate certain tables for laptop use; you can't plop down just anywhere with your Macbook- check the sign on the table first. I can't sing Nook's praises enough. Just go, take a book, order a latte, and watch the cable cars pass by on the tree-lined Hyde Street. You'll fall in love with SF all over again. read more

The coffee is the best you can find for some blocks in a 5 block stretch in the uppermost part of nob hill. The food menu is pretty good for brunches and breakfasts and the drink menu is very solid for a small cafe of this nature. The people working at the cafe are extremely nice and accommodating. Definitely a great work/study spot. Seating can get a little tight and the outside seating is on a slant; that is, your literally sitting against the hill, which can be a little uncomfortable. Best time to get there would be on the early side of a weekend morning and enjoy the ambiance. read more

Breakfast is served most of the day and we highly recommend the breakfast wrap in addition to the shrimp quesadilla and Three cheeses w/ fig spread small bites. While waiting for a friend at Jackson and Hyde I showed up 30 minutes earlier than anticipated. My stomach reminded me it was hungry. I decided to take the opportunity to grab something to eat. Nook Just happened to be here like the room of requirement from Harry Potter. It was a great stop. The atmosphere is relaxing and the staff are friendly. The Nook is a great Nob Hill neighborhood cafe. The coffee is delicious and don't miss the breakfast wrap served with avocado and salsa! I wish the staff was a tad friendlier. They aren't unfriendly, just not very warm or interested in customers personally, as is typical in many neighborhood cafés. This is the perfect spot to finish up your work on a sunny afternoon: lots of windows, warmly painted, they have great food, good coffee and every ten minutes the cable car comes rumbling down around the corner and disappears down Hyde Street. It feels like the essence of the city I love (mixed with the magic trolley from Mr. Rodgers). I'm tempted to say 'best of all' but that is a tough title since I like so much about this place, but one great attribute is that in the late afternoon/early evening when it really is time to quit working they shut off the WiFi, dim the lights and start happy hour! read more

Yummy food - great salads, sandwiches, etc. They have wifi but they don't let computers dominate the place so it is still a great place to have lunch or an afternoon coffee. The best part is that if you are there working on your laptop in the afternoon, at 5 they shut off the wifi and start happy hour! You can't work even if you wanted to, it officially becomes time to stop working and have a beer! The cable car rumbling down around the corner is another wonderful feature.
