Unfortunately, when we arrived, we were told the wait for hibachi would be quite pretty long, so we opted for the non-hibachi menu. I'm not big on sushi, so I chose to get Chinese, which, didn't seem like too much of a stretch given the Chinese lions outside the front doors. To get started I ordered their calamari, which resembled Kopp's onion rings with the texture of Haribo gummy worms that were in a bag "closed" by a three year old and left out for weeks. If you've never experienced that, it means like rubber, and when you try to rip a bite away with your canines, the onion ring coating crumbles all over the place. Nice! After about a 40-45 minute wait later the food arrived. The servings were huge, but that's where the fun ended. I ordered sesame chicken, but what was placed in front of me was hella orange, not only in color but flavor. I informed my waiter that they mistakenly served me orange chicken, but good old David, the waiter, informed me that even though it tasted like orange chicken, in no way could it be because it had sesame seeds on it. Ok cool, throwing sesame seeds on anything doesn't make it sesame. After a few back and forths with David and the manager, they insisted sesame chicken is the same as orange chicken, and general Tso's chicken but with sesame seeds. Hmmm, since I've cooked sesame chicken and general Tso's chicken myself (Made with Lau, look his videos up on YouTube) I knew sesame chicken includes sesame oil, which was not at all present alongside the orange flavor. You would think that makes sense, but good old David let me know that in none of his stints as a Chinese food chef, all across the country, did the sesame chicken recipe call for sesame oil. I wonder where the name came from then, sesame seeds? I can't believe they were so set against being wrong that they would argue there is no sesame oil in sesame chicken, and presumably that sesame chicken should taste like orange chicken, minus the orange zest. If you decide to visit Asiana, heed my warning and stay away from the Chinese food. Don't be fooled by the inclusion of the Chinese lions, and stick to the Japanese theme, since my brother did enjoy his sushi. 2 stars only because the rest of the group had decent meals. Just avoid any Chinese chicken dish.

They nailed that perfect contrast of a crunchy exterior and a soft, flavorful center, we're still craving them today! As for the sushi, the Color Dragon and Spicy Tuna rolls were incredibly fresh and delicious. We finished with the ube cake roll; while the flavor was lovely, it was a bit on the dry side. I did hear that the chicken hibachi was good but would've been better with yum yum and ginger sauce like what's available at other restaurants. Maybe just a one off but we won't return soon.

A huge pet peeve of mine is when there is too much rice on the outside and not a lot of meat or fillings on the inside. This place did not do that. We got the California and spicy salmon rolls. Both were generously filled. I also got the soft shelled crab as an app. Nice and crispy. For dessert, we got the fried ice cream and tempura banana. Both were delicious. If I am in the area, probably for shopping at the mall across the street, then I will definitely stop by this restaurant again!

Food: They have an extensive menu, with plenty of the usual selections of appetizers, rolls, ramen, hibachi, and more. They also offer sushi specials featuring more exclusive fish and cuts, such as toro tuna and uni, both of which they were serving the evening we visited. We decided on the Pork Egg Roll, Toro Tuna Sashimi, Sunflower Roll, and Shrimp Fried Rice. We knew it would be a lot of food, and the server even cautioned us about the portion sizes. We explained that we fully expected leftovers, and there definitely were some. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said this was one of the best Asian/sushi meals I've had in quite a while. The egg rolls were hot, thoroughly fried without being greasy, and the filling tasted fresh and well balanced. The toro tuna was excellent, although I've realized that I actually prefer the leaner tuna cuts. The Sunflower Roll was as much art as food, both interesting and fun. The fried rice was also excellent, with large whole shrimp that were cooked perfectly tender. When I had a few additional sushi-related questions she couldn't immediately answer, the owner came over and happily made sure everything was explained. Downtown Waukesha already has some excellent restaurants, and now Kumi can be added to that list. Definitely a place we will be returning to.

The food is always fresh, flavorful, and plated with care. The veggie tempura is light, crispy, and never greasy. The bento box is a perfect combo--filling, balanced, and so well-seasoned. And everything has been consistent, which is rare and so appreciated. Ordering through online makes pickup fast and stress-free, which we love. Honestly, it's become our go-to lunch and dinner spot whenever we need something that feels like a treat but doesn't break the bank.
