Noticed this new sushi restaurant moving into a space that previously housed a couple of different coffee shops. I was interested to see how a new restaurant would transform this great location on Main Street in Waukesha. Food: They have an extensive menu, with plenty of the usual selections of appetizers, rolls, ramen, hibachi, and more. They also offer sushi specials featuring more exclusive fish and cuts, such as toro tuna and uni, both of which they were serving the evening we visited. We decided on the Pork Egg Roll, Toro Tuna Sashimi, Sunflower Roll, and Shrimp Fried Rice. We knew it would be a lot of food, and the server even cautioned us about the portion sizes. We explained that we fully expected leftovers, and there definitely were some. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said this was one of the best Asian/sushi meals I've had in quite a while. The egg rolls were hot, thoroughly fried without being greasy, and the filling tasted fresh and well balanced. The toro tuna was excellent, although I've realized that I actually prefer the leaner tuna cuts. The Sunflower Roll was as much art as food, both interesting and fun. The fried rice was also excellent, with large whole shrimp that were cooked perfectly tender. Service: There were only a few other tables occupied when we arrived, so we were seated quickly and able to settle in right away. Our server did a nice job with drinks and helping explain the menu. When I had a few additional sushi-related questions she couldn't immediately answer, the owner came over and happily made sure everything was explained. The food arrived with great pacing, and we always felt well attended to. One small surprise, which is just an example of how Kumi steps things up a notch, was that there was a slice of lemon in my hot green tea. I've never had that unless I specifically requested it. Thanks, Ava. Atmosphere: They have done an amazing job redesigning the interior. Even though I had been in this space many times when it housed previous businesses, it was hard to recognize. The atmosphere feels both upscale and casual. There is a sushi bar, seating in the front area, and a back room for additional seating or possibly private events. The lighting is warm while still being bright enough for easy menu reading. So glad we decided to stop by. Downtown Waukesha already has some excellent restaurants, and now Kumi can be added to that list. Definitely a place we will be returning to. read more

With the ever growing sushi trend, plus how few restaurants are investing in Waukesha, my hopes were not high for Kumi. Have to say, I was wrong. Kumi is an excellent addition to downtown Waukesha. Stopped in on a Saturday night with no reservations. My group of two was sat within 5 minutes. The interior has been beautifully remodeled, with unique lighting and Asian design accents, transforming it from the former coffee shop space that it has been over the years. Service is extremely friendly and fast. After we ordered our drinks and were quickly served, we were ready to order our food. We decided to sample a little bit of everything, by ordering the Kumi Love Boat. Included was 16 pcs sashimi, 12 pcs sushi, 1 dragon roll & 1 tuna roll. When it was delivered, we were impressed. The boat is so elegant, the sushi is thick cut and melts in your mouth. Absolutely no complaints. It was so delicious, I ended up coming here a second time with a different guest and ordered the same thing. Still cut to perfection and utterly perfect. I highly recommend Kumi. read more

An awesome experience tonight at Kumi! We used to frequent this place back when it was a coffee shop and then heard it was on your new ownership and that this restaurant had been established. It is beautiful in here, it's amazing to see what they did design wise to the interior and really transformed it into a higher end sushi stop. We came together as a family, and the service was very friendly and accommodating. The food was also fantastic! I ordered the fire phoenix roll and I highly recommend it, it's the perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and savory. I will be coming back here regularly literally just for this roll. We were so looking forward to trying Kumi and they lived up to the high expectations! I took my friend here for her birthday lunch. We both ordered sushi lunch specials. The space is clean, bright, and inviting. Service was kind and fast. Price was very reasonable and the sushi was very fresh. And they were able to get us in and out within our lunch hour. Stopped in around 6pm on a Thursday. Not busy but, its was starting to. The place looked very clean and inviting. We were seated in the large back dining room which had a modern Japanese style. We passed the sushi bar on the way which looked great. Our server was friendly and helpful. I had the Ramen with the Tonkatsu Broth and Chashu and a Soft Boiled egg. The broth was very tasty. I the egg seemed to be soaked in soy marinade with a velvet yoke. Delicious. My partner had salmon sashimi. She said everything was very fresh and delicious. My wife and I ate here for the first time after seeing it on socials quite a bit. We were not disappointed. Our server was very friendly and helpful in picking out some of the speciality rolls. We started with the Hamachi and Jalapeño and a seaweed salad for apps. For entrees we had the Angel, Volcano and Golden. All were very good with a good amount of fish and not loaded down with rice. I really liked this place I was impressed with the sushi. I had vegetable gyoza which was steamed then grilled which gave it a light flavor I enjoyed. The actual dumpling filling was also more flavorful than most places. Sake was enjoyable. The sushi also tasted great. read more

Very fast and friendly service, even on a busy Saturday night. My husband and I were seated promptly upon arrival. The menu is extensive, which was a happy surprise, and their sushi is fresh, presented beautifully and was absolutely delicious. We also had some miso soup which was yummy and again, very fresh tasting, and I could tell they are using high-quality ingredients. Even the ginger and wasabi sides for our sushi were top level in my opinion. We both enjoyed our hot barley tea as well. It had a delicious flavor. The decor in this restaurant is absolutely stunning and fascinating. And there is comfortable seating as well. I really hope this place stays for years and years to come. My husband and I stopped at the newly-opened Kumi for first time at around 8:45 on the Saturday after New Year's Day, and I was happy to see that it was packed for as late as it was. I was a big fan of Mountain Top Coffee, the business that had occupied the space previously, and I was hopeful that the new owners would do the place justice. It appears that they certainly have! The space has been redecorated to reflect the fact that it's now a sushi/hibachi restaurant - from the Japanese-inspired photos, paintings, and decor to the fish-shaped lights that hung above our seats and the gold "beckoning" cats at the register, symbolizing good fortune, wealth, and customers. Customers seem to be treated very well, as we were greeted with a smile, sat at a small table at the window right away (it appeared to be the only one open, although plenty of bar seating was still available), and met by our server very quickly after we made ourselves comfortable. After our drinks were ordered (Chardonnay for me, sake for my husband), we started working our way through the huge menu of appetizers, sushi, sashimi, regular and specialty rolls, tempura, noodles, ramen, poke bowls, and hibachi options. There were so many excellent choices it was hard to decide, but we settled on 4 rolls - Spicy Tuna, Alaskan, Naruto, and Volcano. All were presented beautifully and tasted as good as they looked. The Volcano Roll, with its tuna, avocado, salmon, tempura flake, and touch of spicy mayo and sweet chili sauce was a standout - with a depth of flavor and perfect amount of creaminess - as was the cool, refreshing bite of the Naruto Roll. But all four were excellent and I'd order them again except for the fact that there are so many others I'm looking forward to trying on future visits. If you're passing through the Milwaukee area and love good sushi, definitely put Kumi on your list of restaurants to check out while you're here. And if you're local - especially if you live in Waukesha - put it on your list of restaurants to visit...again and again and again! read more

The food is amazing. I've gone twice now: once for lunch during the week and I was able to order from the lunch menu. And the second time, again for lunch, but because it was during the weekend, I had to order from their regular menu. Every roll that I ordered was delicious and flavorful. My friend ordered from their hibachi grill and she enjoyed her meal and said she'd order it again. Staff are friendly. The atmosphere is beautiful with plenty of seating in the back room. This place is very cute with relaxing ambiance their sushi is so good but their service was really just low quality. The waitress behind us lost someone's card. Our waitress never rlly checked up on us and our food took awhile. Food taking awhile was honestly fine because the seats were very comfortable and we got the window seat so I was people watching. However, my ramen came out with chicken instead of pork. It was fixed she came back with some pork. We sat there waiting to pay the bill for a while so we left 150$ cash on the table (our bill was 130$). Kinda sad i wanted a little bowl for the rest of my ramen but my waitress was not prioritizing serving. It would be okay if she was running around serving other people but she wasn't. She wasn't even around in the seating area she would just disappear. RECAP: Food? Amazing. Ambiance? Amazing. Service? Very very slow and sub par. Would definitely come back if different waiters were working. Honestly I feel terrible about leaving a 3 star on something I loved, tasted so good, and had a beautiful atmosphere.
