Had dinner at Norma last night... Ambiance is great. We sat outside and the weather was beautiful. Service isn't friendly but fine. Food is mixed...I had spaghetti with pomodoro sauce and it was average at best. My husband had a pizza with buffalo mozzarella and he loved it. Prices are okay...it came to about $60 + tip for a pasta, a pizza, and a bottle of Pelligrino. I might return for pizza but I don't recommend the pasta here. read more

First time here and food was phenomenal. Got capricciosa pizza but swapped out ham for sausage. The artichokes were so crunchy, olives were so rich with deep flavor. Perfect balance and combination. Seafood couscous was also amazing, with chopped nuts in the flavorful soup. Just realized the seafood portion did not come with mussels like the menu said it would, but it was still excellent. Norma is a cute Sicilian restaurant - lots of charm- with a map of the old country on the wall. We started with arancini- the traditional (ragu) was delicious and sauce was great. Was disappointed it was temp temp and the sauce wasn't very warm. The squid ink arancini didn't taste like any squid ink and the shrimp on the inside was cold. Again not sure why the temperature was an issue. This hasn't been the case before when my husband has gone. Next we got the anelletti- has to be the most interesting baked pasta I've had. The texture is interesting - bread crumbs and thin sliced eggplant - had flavors I couldn't put my fingers on but very good! The mortadella pizza was amazing- I'm a sucker for mortadella, pistachios and cheese! I wasn't a fan of the porchetta sandwich but my husband loved it. For me the place is 3/5- I don't feel the need to go back BUT my husband really enjoys it and has brought multiple friends before hockey games (he walks 20 min from Penn !) . It just may be my taste/preference but 4/5 because I appreciate that it has some great dishes that just aren't my favorite. Holy, Norma! We went to Sicily on our honeymoon a few years back, and I think we are vicariously reliving it through this restaurant! My husband and I ADORE this place. My parents ADORE this place. Every single time we leave, the first thing we do is plan when we can come back what we're going to order the next time. And every time we come back, we debate whether to order an old favorite or branch out. So usually we do a little of both. SIDEBAR: I love that the servers I've met thus far are all from Italy (i.e. grew up there). We love Alessia -- she's taken great care of us. We also really enjoyed Stefano -- and I think his name was Vincenzo (sorry if I got that wrong!) Servers usually give the advice, if you're a couple, to try one pasta and one pizza. And neither will disappoint. The pastas are very authentic -- and the pizza's are light and airy and fresh! And not greasy or oily. Just delightful. My husband LOVES the pasta dish that is baked and has sardines -- that one tastes like sardines, so if you are a sardine fan, you'll love it. If not, pick a different item. The anchovy dish (la Pasta C'Anchova) is very subtle, and although I don't usually eat seafood, I loved this dish best of all the pasta choices. A previous time, my parents loved the pasta norma and I enjoyed the Busiate al pesto Trapanese. It's a little heavy but a unique flavor. Last time, we had the yummy "Nero di seppia" (rice ball with squid ink), which was great even though I'm not an arancino/a fan or a seafood fan generally. The artichokes were delightful, and a previous time, we have the eggplant caponata was GREAT. That's my favorite appetizer. Highly recommend. Oddly, I preferred the Bresaola pizza which had less cheese "per capita" to the 4 Formaggi, which was a little heavier/denser. Of the Cabbuci, I had a caprese one -- interesting twist that they add spicy mayo--I'd personally want more of that next time. But it's HUGE and fed me for two subsequent meals since I took home my leftovers. I personally prefer the pizza to the giant sandwich because I like less bread -- but this was worth a try. The desserts and wines are lovely. We tried a few thus far. We've had the Torta della Nonna, a few gelato flavors, and Cassatella con Ricotta -- that last one was especially tasty. My only critical comments for the restaurant are: - Please update the PDF menu on your website, it's missing stuff! - Please let me order a side of broccoli rabe! It's on one of your pizzas, so I know you have it back there. I'd love to pay for it and eat it! :) But none of those critical remarks will keep me from your delicious food. I came here with three friends and upon arrival, we were told it would be a 20-30 minute wait (Friday night ~8) and that there was no list for us to add our name to so we had to wait outside that entire time waiting. Once we did get seated, though, service was so quick and the food was delicious. My friends and I loved the music they were playing and the interior of the restaurant was warm and had a great vibe. This is such a cute spot right in the heart of Murray Hill. The staff is extremely friendly and very quick to meet your request (including refilling the bread basket!). The appetizers were the best part of the meal. We got the stuffed artichoke, arancini norma and arancini ragu. Wow, Norma is really a great place! I came here on Friday at 6:30 pm, the wait was less than 15 minutes. The hostess was such a sweetheart! We ordered the Arincina Norma to start and I must say that was outstanding. Website description-Tomato rice ball stuffed with eggplant, mozzarella, basil, served over ricotta sauce. This has to be the singularly most perfect and mouthwateringly delicious rice ball I've ever had and I mean ever. The outside was delightfully crispy and the inside was a beautiful symphony of rice, eggplant, basil, mozzarella. We literally savored every bite. So simple yet so heavenly. We followed this with Pasta Norma and Gnocchi in bolognese sauce, which was terrific as well. The pasta was cooked exactly to our liking and we could taste the freshness of each ingredient. I'm surprised I didn't review here during my time living in New York since they were my favorite Italian place in the neighborhood! You can't go wrong coming here for Neapolitan style pizza or more standard Italian food It's been a few years since I've explored the menu so I can only speak to the mortadella specifically. If you're a creative eater and find yourself going for the more rich/creamy pizzas this is an absolute must try. I love the swap of pesto in for tomato sauce and wish it was an option for more pizzas. The pesto used is more basily than what I've had in other dishes recently, as opposed to that less seasoned more almondy rich flavor. You would think 2 creamy cheeses would be kind of redundant but the two being distinct flavors to the dish that go really nicely together. Lastly the pistachios are a nice subtle touch to up the richness and bring an unusual contrast in texture While the mortadella stands out as one of the most creative options, their menu has enough unique dishes that I never got bored of coming here in my couple of years living walking distance. Price wise they're pretty on par with the rest of the area. I would definitely recommend coming when the weather is nice enough for them to have the back patio open. Heard decent things about this place so we decided to give it a try. The food was only mediocre at best unfortunately. Worst part though was that we ordered a pizza and got it to go because we wanted to sit outside and enjoy our meal. Nobody was sitting in the outside area because the weather is cold and the restaurant itself was not particularly busy. The server came outside while we were eating our pizza that we paid for and told us we couldn't sit outside because we got our pizza to go. They then asked us to leave. The food is good, but not good good. The hostess who sat us at a sidewalk table was very welcoming. Quick service, our dishes came out in the time it took me to wash my hands after we had ordered. We got: -- whole artichoke stuffed with parmesan, breadcrumbs, garlic, & parsley ($18): not a fan of their preparation. I would have preferred a plain roasted artichoke as its stuffing made it unnecessarily rich & salty. It gilded the lily, shall we say. -- margherita pizza ($18): appreciated the many dollops of stretchy mozzarella. A decent pie, would not be opposed to trying others. -- gnocchi bolognese ($18): made with beef & pork ragout. I didn't expect to like this dish as much as I did. This restaurant was recommended by a friend and I highly recommend!! The spot itself is cute and small - the inside restaurant was full when we arrived but they had plenty of outside seating which was great. Despite being outside, the service was very quick and helpful in answering our questions about wine and ingredients in the dishes. My friend had the lasagna and seemed to love it as there was no trace left at the end. The restaurant also brought a fantastic crispy and fluffy bread with olive oil to start for those wondering.
