    Chicken Parm

My family of four went for dinner Friday evening before heading to our hotel nearby. Everything, from the food to the vibes exceeded expectations! It was such a welcoming atmosphere--the owner makes it a point to greet every diner and the servers were very attentive. So glad we stumbled upon this spot after a long day of sightseeing.

Super salty industrial parmesan on the Caesar salad
    J P.

I had high hope for this cozy old-school Italian joint in Murray Hill but was left disappointed by fairly mediocre food. We started out with the Caesar salad for two. It was a pile of very cold chopped romaine barely visible under a blanket of salty "parmesan," which was clearly from the first forkful grated at an industrial facility and neither aged nor Reggiano. It was shockingly salty. Sadly, the mains were no improvement. I ordered the veal forestiere. While the veal was tender and not over cooked, the sauce had no balance with too much going on: too many salty olives and capers, while not enough mushrooms. It was salty and aggressively seasoned. The house red, however, was a very nice and affordable generous pour. Service was efficient, albeit very impersonal. The bottom line is that in a city with so many great Italian restaurants, I would neither recommend now return.

Chicken parmesan and penne alla vodka

My coworkers raved about this place and it did not disappoint. The baked clams are delicious. I also tried the calamari and they are not overly breaded with a nice fresh taste. For entrees, we ordered the chicken parm with a side of penne alla vodka. You can also order the chicken parm with vodka sauce. The portion size is huge. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The space is small but great for quality food.

Grilled Calamari special split on 2 plates

Old school Italian spot on 39th and Lex . Very cool vibes . We got the App Special which was a tasty grilled Calamari that they split onto 2 plates for us . My main was also the pasta Special of Gnocchi in vodka sauce and was really good and also such a nice portion that I ended up taking some home. My friend got the bone in Veal Chop and he liked that a lot . Now they don't have a Cocktail menu but you can order any drink you like and they'll make it. I got a Margarita and it was perfect. Get some Tiramisu too. It was delicious. Bathroom is upstairs. Staff is friendly and professional. Stop by if you're near Grand Central.

The food was the best Italian I've had outside of my grandmother's kitchen, the service was fantastic, and Sam himself was so warm and welcoming. This is a new addition to my favorite NYC spots--we will definitely be back!

Amazing food! The service was incredible and friendly. The cozy feel was the best. One of my favorite places in New York City. Thank you Sam!

Intimate spot with friendly service and solid Italian food. The small homey room was crowded and could have stood more ventilation on a warm Friday evening - even a ceiling fan would have been helpful. Negroni cocktail to start was potent and flavorful, although I would have preferred less Campari and more gin in the mix. Have to say we thought the much touted Caesar salad for two was just so-so. Although the Romaine lettuce was fresh and plentiful, the cheese topping was dry and powdery rather than freshly grated, and the dressing was oily and overly tart with no croutons in sight. Hubbie loved his pasta with calamari, said the sauce was flavorful without being overpowering. My Veal Forestiere with olives and artichokes was extremely salty, would not get that dish again. Shared the tartufo for dessert, a generous globe of cold chocolately goodness. Reasonable pricing, ample portions, prompt service. I would definitely return to try out some different menu items.

Sam's Place is a great authentic Italian restaurant in the heart of Murray Hill! This small restaurant is full of character and charm with pictures of previous customers (of notoriety) on the wall. When we arrived the host poked fun at us for being a few minutes late. Although we did have a reservation, we had to wait ~10 minutes to be seated. Normally, this isn't an issue but there was no space to stand as people were exiting the restaurant which was not ideal (was too cold to wait outside). Once seated, we were given food menus. Not sure if there was a drink menu as we were not given one, but we ordered drinks a la carte. We ordered Calamri Marinara to share. This was absolutely delicious. Would highly recommend as a starter. I personally ordered the Pasta Nera. I'm a huge squid ink pasta fan and this did not disappoint! The mushrooms in this pasta dish added to the flavor and the sauce was absolutely delicious. We shared the Tiramisu -- definitely tasted good, but I have had better. Overall, this restaurant is a cute spot for a date night or to grab an authentic italian meal with friends if you are in the area. I probably would not come back but glad I tried it!

Sam's Place is a neighborhood gem. Mossimo is a wonderful host. The food is so good here. We've tried the salads, soups, pastas and many entrees. All truly delicious. The comped bread basket is great with butter and dipping oil. The wine list is good. The decor is homey. The waitstaff is always on point.

A great neighborhood, traditional Italian restaurant. The food is delicious. The calamari in red sauce was delicious, perfectly cooked, seasoned and complex. I had the veal marsala with linguini which I also thought was perfect. The meat was tenderized, subtly coated and bursting with that delicious marsala sauce. The portions are large so definitely expect to take leftovers home. Their homemade, traditional cheesecake was the perfect way to finish the night. The staff were incredibly friendly and even encouraged to us to substitute different items on the menu to create a unique experience.

    Fettuccine Alfredo
    Macky M.

I got the Fettuccine Alfredo, and I'll say it was very average. Personally I don't have a taste for fancy food, so it didn't impress me a lot. By no means is it a bad meal, it appeared small and ended up filling my stomach quickly! Waiter was very polite, and the host was also nice. In general the tables are close together so if you are worried about Covid that could be an issue if it is a crowded night.

Absolutely love this gem. Sam's Place is an authentic, old school Italian spot, with all the charm. Been coming here for years, but recently came for Valentine's Day. Sam's Place was actually our first outdoor dining experience in the pandemic, and first indoor dining experience when it recently opened back up. So happy this place stuck around because I surely would miss it. Paired with the complimentary bread and breadsticks, and the martinis and wine, you can't go wrong with starters. All of the salads are great, we prefer the Caesar. Baked clams are small, but delicious. For entrees, we love both the chicken parm and eggplant parm (this is not on the menu but they will make it for you). These come with vegetables, but you can sub with pasta if you prefer. Other recommendations include their seafood linguini (also off menu but always available), and linguini with clams. Prices are reasonable for the portions. Service is always on point, and we love that the owner is always around checking on tables, he truly cares about his customer's experience. Throughout the years he has given us a few complimentary drinks or appetizers, which we really appreciated. I was even given a red rose when I came here on Valentine's Day. Love this place - can't recommend enough!

    Branzino with sauté spinach.

What a gem we discovered! Service was on point and super friendly. Cozy and intimate atmosphere. Reasonable prices for NYC. We thoroughly enjoyed the burrata appetizer special services with yellow and red roasted peppers and prosciutto. (Dove right in without taking a photo.) Chicken piccata typically served with steamed vegetables but I requested the swap for pasta. Very tasty. Chicken and pasta cooked perfectly. Different but interesting and tasty flavors... sauce did not include capers and had a hint of nutmeg! Bronzino special was prepared in a lemon butter caper sauce that had a beautiful balance and lovely texture. Spinach was perfectly executed and delicious. Too full for dessert, we asked for a slice of lemon cake to go. So light and airy I could've eaten the frosting alone by the spoonful. Definitely recommend and plan to return! Gracias!

Even if we wouldn't have gotten a window table and it wasn't Christmas, the vibes and interior of this place would have still been great. We went in December night of 2024 so some aspects of the menu have changed however, most of the dishes still appear to be on their menu as of now, June 2026. It appears most changes comes to the type of pasta used in a dish, aspects around a dishes main focus and gelato/dessert flavors. Everything we ordered was an 8 or above out of 10. The beet salad (BARBABIETOLE) is easily 10/10 and a top 3 salad we have ever had. The chocolate cake with gelato (TORTINO DI CIOCCOLATO) was 10/10 and the best dessert we had at Da Andrea. We ordered 3 total, including the ricotta cheesecake and tiramisu. Tuna Tartare, gorgonzola pasta and bolognese are 9's. The fritto misto, the other pasta we ordered and the other 2 desserts are 8's. If you're in New York make reservations and go. My Wife found this place and made reservations. Only thing I regret after looking at additional photos is not ordering the grilled pork chop.

Baba Al Rum was also tasty, as was the Orecchiette. Rigatoni was salty, but well-flavored. I visited a popular Italian restaurant from the Union Square Hospitality group with a group of five others. The restaurant is quite large, and although it was somewhat noisy, the tables were spaced apart enough that it was easy to hear everyone. We had an early dinner at 5:45 PM, which took quite a while, but I didn't mind. To drink, I went with the Bitter Giuseppe for $19, with Cynar 45.3, Punt e Mes, lemon, and sea salt. I'm a fan of most Negronis, and this was a particularly bitter version. The bit of lemon and sea salt added a unique but enjoyable flavor at the end, though in retrospect, the salt probably wasn't super necessary. Two of us split, and eventually, a few of us ordered their signature appetizer, the $18 Cast Iron Focaccia, with tomato conserva, a mixture of crushed tomatoes, olive oil, and Calabrian chili. The bread was fresh and warm, albeit a tad oily and salty, but it paired wonderfully with the conserva. As someone who doesn't like it when bread is extra, this was delicious and worth it. Another person ordered the $18 Insalata Verde. It was very large, but fairly basic, with a vinaigrette that had a citrusy and mustardy flavor. There was also the Caramelized Onion Torta for $27, which was very large, as expected for the price point. It had a creamy and tangy flavor from the Pecorino Toscano with some sweetness from the onion. It was delicious, but very heavy, and I would recommend that around three or four people split it alongside the focaccia. Finally, there was also the $15 Pizza Bianca, which was easily the smallest of all the plates, but they still enjoyed it. My main dish was the Orecchiette for $26, with ramps, pistachio, and pecorino. Like most of their dishes, the portion size was quite large, with plenty of pasta, which was perfectly cooked. The ramps added a touch of sweetness, although I would have liked a few more nuts. Additionally, there was almost too much pecorino, which made the dish slightly salty, but it was still enjoyable. As a side, I got the $19 Grilled Asparagus with dates, vermouth, and blue cheese, which came with many pieces of lightly charred asparagus. While there was plenty of funky blue cheese, I would have preferred more dates. Two of the others got the Rigatoni Alla Gricia for $30. The portion was large, and I tried a bit while they tried mine. The noodles were again cooked perfectly, and while there was a lot of guanciale, this was easily the saltiest of all the dishes. For dessert, I chose their Baba AU Rum for $18, which was uniquely mixed with chocolate and orange. The presentation was a bit off, as it looked like a certain emoji, but the flavor made up for it. The subtle hint of rum paired with the bitter-sweet chocolate and orange. The dark chocolate-covered orange slice on top was a nice touch as well. Someone else got a tart, and one other person got the Gelati, which resulted in one of the only faults during service. She heard it was two scoops, and ordered espresso stracciatella and hazelnut, but was given two separate orders for $12 each. The gelato was good, but unlike most things, definitely not worth it for the price. I liked the appetizers much more, but I found the food good overall. Tasty dessert, and the portions make up at least a bit for the relatively higher prices.

Overall, we highly recommend L'Artusi for a special night out!

Being Italian American, I'm hypercritical of spots like these - but nevertheless the positive reviews were overwhelming so I wanted to check it out for myself. One of my friends and I were looking to catch up, so I booked a table and off we went. While it can be tricky to get a reservation during prime dinner time, it's relatively easy to get a lunch reservation - or an early/late dinner. I managed to get a reservation for dinner at 9:15pm which was the earliest I could find. The restaurant is pretty unassuming on the outside - it looks like a converted brownstone and once inside we were greeted by a large space with a sceney vibe. The space is split between two levels with a large bar up front and a semi-open kitchen in the back. The decor was modern - with lots of greys and neutral tones which was a little unexpected. The main star of the menu is pasta, but they also have a few non-pasta mains as well as some crudo selections, apps, and sides. We decided to get a few apps, two pastas, and one side. To start, we went with the octopus, roasted mushrooms, burrata crostone, and focaccia. These were all really good, but my favorite was the mushrooms. I'm usually not a fan of mushrooms but these were prepared with red pepper and fried egg and were delicious; it cut through the earthiness and changed the texture to something I really enjoyed. The focaccia was also a standout - it's house made and was paired with a peppery oil that complemented the bread well. For mains we split two pastas - the caccio e pepe and the rigatoni. Both of these were very good, though I felt the rigatoni was the stronger dish. It was prepared with sausage ragu, soppressata, broccoli rabe pesto, and pecorino. The flavors worked really well together and the pasta was cooked al dente. The caccio e pepe was perfectly fine, I just feel it's been overplayed and didn't feel there was anything that stood out amongst the others I've tried. We also got a broccoli rabe as a side which was great. We couldn't leave without dessert and decided to get their olive oil cake and quattro formaggio cheesecake. The restaurant is known for the former - it was perfectly fine but I've had olive oil cakes elsewhere of the same or better quality. The cheesecake was the stronger dessert IMO - the combination of cheeses gave it an interesting, almost savory flavor. The brûlée top and mascerated strawberries were great texture and flavor complements. Service was great - the place was packed but service was consistently on point and everyone was friendly. Overall, I had a good experience at L'Artusi. While everything was very good, I'm struggling to find the exact reason why this place became such a hot spot compared to other Italian spots in the city. Nevertheless, you'll have a good meal here and I would definitely return if given the opportunity.

Second the waiter who took our order was polite and on point with specials and knowledge of the menu. He (just never caught his name) suggested the Rigatoni which chicken and sausage.
