We had a lovely dinner at Rossini's. We went on a Saturday night as a last minute decision, and were glad to get a table. This is an old school, white tablecloth Italian restaurant. Service is prompt and attentive. We calamari and a Caesar to start, plus complimentary bread service. The calamari was light and crispy, and the Caesar was as expected. We had Veal Francesce and Pollo Florentina. Both were tender and very flavorful. They were served with vegetables but no pasta, which was surprising. We would have ordered some pasta to go with had we known. The waiter recommended a nice reasonably priced bottle of red wine; we appreciated his recommendation as we were dining after a long day and didn't want to battle the wine list. We ended the evening with desserts and enjoyed both of them. It's been a month since we ate there and I can't remember what we had. The restaurant had a piano player and two classical singers. They went to each table asking for requests, and we were thrilled when they sang Con te Partiro in Italian. Can't get more old school than that! Overall, a wonderful evening out. Even though I ordered 30 mins before and gave them extra time, I had to wait an extra 15 mins at the bar while I was in a rush. I ordered the melon and prosciutto, baked clams, calamari, 2 steaks and the vitello alla rossini. -Baked clams were good, there were a few pieces of sand in there that caught me off caught though. (I ordered only one but they gave and charged me for 2 orders) -calamari they were soft but not too crispy and had a fishy smell. I could pass on that -the steaks were nicely cooked but nothing special -my fav was the vitello alla rossini, very flavorful and everything just meshed perfectly together. For all the money I paid for this takeout, I shouldve ate at the restaurant. Heads up this is on the higher end restaurant and I wouldnt expect large portions. read more

It was a friend's birthday and we wanted to grab lunch somewhere nice. And we stumbled upon this great pre-fixed lunch menu. This is definitely one of the better pre-fixed lunch deals in the city. 3 courses for $39 a person in the CITY! Such a steal! Plus they had some solid items! I think because it was a work day it wasn't that busy during lunch. But there were a few occupied tables beside us. (I didn't get a chance to take a photo of the back dining hall, where we ate, it was well decorated!) The front area and the bar was also nice. And did you see that photo wall of all the famous people who visited! Quite impressive! What we ordered: (how the Italians say it) PRIMI PIATTI: - Melanzane Rippiene (Eggplant slices stuffed with ricotta and mozzarella cheeses) - Zuppa di Cozze (Mussels served in a white wine broth with olive oil and garlic) - Calamari Fritti SECONDI PIATTI: - Ravioli alla Vodka - Vitello alla Rossini (Scallops of veal sautéed with a delicate wine and mushroom sauce accented with prosciutto and onion) - Pollo alla Francese DOLCE: - Tortoni - Cannoli Assorted complimentary bread Please note, you do need to ask them for the pre-fixed menu. I've eaten here maybe four times in the past 15-20 years and have always left happy and full. Part of it is the old-school ambiance. On Friday and Sunday nights, there is lovely piano music -- mainly old standards -- which sets a lovely tone. I heard music from Camelot, West Side Story, and even the Sound of Music, as well as other tunes (I think I heard Long and Winding Road). No singing, just the piano, and I really enjoyed it. On Saturday nights, I understand there is opera. If you're not an opera fan, I imagine that might be a bit intrusive, but for opera fans, it is probably bliss. Most recently, my friend and I split a seafood salad appetizer, which I think was a special. The kitchen actually split it for us, and we each had an elegant plate that was almost enough to constitute an appetizer portion in itself. I had the veal Sorrentino (with eggplant and mozzarella cheese) and my friend had the veal Rossini (which looked a lot like veal marsala; I'm not sure how it differed). I LOVED my dish. It wasn't classic tomato sauce, but something more flavorful. We shared a cannoli for dessert. It was everything a cannoli should be. Two minor notes: 1) We finished the bread basket and it was removed without asking us if we wanted more. (We definitely didn't NEED more, but it would have been nice if someone asked.) 2) The entrees didn't come with a side of pasta. The portions were large enough that we didn't need it, but I guess I'm used to getting pasta as a side to a meat dish, so at some point I noted its absence. This is not a budget place, but I was very happy with my meal. The wait-staff are all tuxedoed and some people seem as if they could have been there for decades. (There must be SOME turnover -- one waiter we asked about something commented that it was only his fifth day on the job.) Our water was refilled without our asking and the check arrived promptly. Wheelchair accessibility notes: There are two interior steps down to reach the restaurant level, but there is a sign outside that indicates that wheelchair users can call for assistance - there may be a bell to ring, I think. Once inside and down those two steps, there is a restroom on that level. There are two levels in the dining room but plenty of room to accommodate a wheelchair on the level that doesn't require any further steps. I've been a fan of Il Molino for past 40 years. My go to place for old school Italian if I can't get a table at RAOs. Well I was taken to a little secret Italian gem of a restaurant Rossini's on east 38th. You walk into a small bar area dark woods a few tables in the corner and you wonder. Is this it? Then the handsome tuxedo dressed Maitre D escorts you back down a hall filled with photos of great celebrities adorning the wall by the coat room. Walk further make a turn and voila a gigantic room filled with diners eating laughing and a plethora of tuxedoed waiters. Noise level - boisterous! But in a good way. Angelo our waiter, proficient in Italian yet comes from South America. Describes every dish with aplomb. Salads a pasta dish to be shared by the three of us with our entrees A chicken dis for one friend that he devoured. The special veal chop pounded breaded fried served Ala Milanese with a salad on top. I order the veal Francese and it was perfect. Light lemony buttery melt in your mouth delicious. I cut very small pieces so I would enjoy the dish longer. A nice red barolo and dinner was perfect. Their special cannoli was shared by my friends but I'm allergic to tree nuts so just an espresso for me. We left and met Marianne the daughter of the founder of Rossini's Her father loved opera as my father did and to honor him every Saturday night they have Opera. I can't wait to return. We were greeted with such an old-school charm and hospitality and the atmosphere was classic and elegant - perfect fo a date night or a relaxed meal with friends/family. We had a baby with us and our server bought the high seat right away and was very attentive. I was happy to see enough vegetarian options and everything we ordered was cooked perfectly, well seasoned, and generously portioned for being in the NYC. This is a great, old school, NYC Italian restaurant. Service is top notch and servers are very attentive. Made a reservation online about 2 hours beforehand and walked in with no issues. Immediately greeted and seated into a small booth. Wait staff attended to our every need and advised of what dishes we should order. Started with burrata which was light and flavorful. I had the linguine with pesto while my mom had carbonara. Both were so incredibly good without being too heavy! Finished with a chocolate mousse cake dessert. Truly one of the best Italian meals I've had in a long time. And that's coming from a family that eats NYC Italian multiple times each week. Rossinis is an NYC staple that's been around since the late 70s. It no doubt falls into the "old school Italian" bucket. If you're an upper east sider, you're familiar with Campagnola, Primola, Elios etc... rossinis is right up there with all of these. Everything we had was excellent. From the baked clams and fried calamari appetizers to the chicken scarp and veal parm entrees, we loved it all. Best of all was the Saturday night live piano + opera singing. Truly a special environment. Do yourself a favor and go on a Saturday night, you won't be disappointed. read more

I wanted so bad to like this place. I tried hard. I spent a couple of hours here enjoying some wine and multiple courses at the bar. Spoiler alert: The wine was the best thing. I would not eat here again even if you paid me to. Service was wonderful! The bartender, Martin, was so sweet and nice . He patiently took care of me over my prolonged courses at the bar. And he had great wine recommendations. The ambiance and vibe was nice. It's got an old school feel. Waiters in tuxes. Low lighting. Celebrity pics. All great. But then you order some food... And that's where this place dies. The Caesar salad sounded nice with the "tangy anchovies." Most boring Caesar salad I've probably ever had. Ever. No wait - I have to emphasize that EVER again. The tiniest, little, bland, crap salad on a plate. I'm fine with small. Give me small. But give me flavor. That $5 supermarket Caesar salad kit is FAR superior to whatever $15 blandness this was. It was edible, though. So I'm holding out some hope here. I go for the baked clams next. Don't do it. I repeat, do not get the clams. They were... Almost gross. Soggy, but overcooked and burned breadcrumbs. No flavor. You gotta make that lemon slice work real hard. Real hard. Maybe then you'll get a tiny touch of flavor. And then the pasta... Someone's Italian grandma has got to be spitting on them right now. Atrocious. I went with the recommendation of the carbonara. Which is one of my fav pasta dishes. What's that crap Italian fast food place? Fazoli's? Yeah... if Fazoli's did a carbonara drive-thru "pasta," it'd be 5x better than whatever I got served. For reals. It was THAT bad. If I could send it back, I'd send everything after the first couple of bites back. Then I'd vomit those first bites and send that back too. Then I'd send my next day poop back too. I want NOTHING about me to be even slightly affiliated with the absolute abomination of this "pasta" dish. I would share my dog's kibble before I subjected my tastebuds to this again. Are you getting the picture yet? Ick. So in sum, service and vibe are fab. Food is shite. (Yes, shite.) Now, all that said, I cannot overstate how impeccable the service was. Absolutely outstanding! Service was immediate (it was right as they opened) and ordered Chicken Sorrento less the prosciutto (too salty for my taste) and asked for double eggplant. I specifically asked what pasta comes with it and was told I could order any pasta they had. I ordered Angel Hair with extra sauce. Was asked what type of sauce and my reply was 'red sauce', he said, ok, Marinara. The martini was excellent and my food came up soon but waiters changed at the bar and they didn't know whose food it was until I claimed the bag of take out. Presented with the check, I asked what the additional entre of $18.00 was for? It was for the pasta and I replied I thought the pasta was included. No pasta included, only polenta and vegetable (of which there was minimal amount). The Chicken Sorrento, sans prosciutto, was without extra eggplant. The food was delicious but having not gotten the extra eggplant in place of the prosciutto (didn't notice till after I got home) and having an $18 upcharge for a meager portion of pasta was not the overall experience I was hoping for but soon put it aside when I tasted the Chicken Sorrento. It was quite delicious for my tastes and a sizable portion of chicken. Enjoy this restaurant but be sure to know what your entrée includes prior to ordering so you don't get an unexpected additional charge. read more

Came here last night for dinner and when you first walk in, you enter a cool bar area where we thought no one was there, but once you walk to the back it was PACKED (they even had a packed downstairs level). There was live piano music playing the entire night and the ambiance was intimate and upscale. Started off with the tre colori salad and got different entrees - veal, chicken parm, and roasted salmon. All of the meals were sooo fresh and delicious and as someone who's favorite dish in the world is chicken parm, this is some of the best chicken parm I have had. Ended with a delicious chocolate cake for dessert and some cappuccinos. This restaurant is on the pricier side, but would 100% recommended if you are visiting from out of town, in need of a date night spot, or are just in the mood for a good meal. read more

I took my granddaughter for dinner on Sunday night and couldn't help but think this is the type of place that my grandparents would have frequented. Our meal was excellent. I had a glass of wine, with the Tri Colored Salad to start and she had a big bowl of chicken soup. She ordered a Sprite that was served in a wine glass. Fancy. She had the Pesto Linguine and I had the Chicken Florentine. Both were wonderful entrees (I tasted hers too). For dessert, I had the cannoli, and she had the ice cream dish which was pretty unique. It was like they took a big ball of ice cream, rolled in chocolate and froze again. It was then sliced for plating, and served with whipped cream and strawberries. My meal was quite nice- the bread basket had scene better days, however. I would go with a solid 3 star but the water glass was never empty, the wait staff were incredibly polite and, for the first time in my life, just like in the movies, the waiter moved the table away from the wall so I could sit down and have a view of the entire place like I was doing my business there. As you walk in from the street, a dark bar greats you- the kind of place where everyone knows everyone and without yelling SAME SEATS, it happens. The dining room is a vast room that has more space a couple of steps down into another area. The ceiling is low and plays tricks with the noise and conversation in the place. I live in the neighbourhood but had never tried this place before recently, and I absolutely regret the decision. The service was good to start with, but after the food came, it all started going downhill. I ordered the "today special" pasta which was a seafood pasta, and I was told by our server that it's a bigger portion - hence the higher price at $55+ (I forgot the exact amount, it is not on the menu as it's a "special"). When the dish arrived, I was shocked to see that it's the same size as other pasta dishes, and the amount of seafood given was a joke. You get four mussels, two clams (one of which was missing, only the shell was there), one scallop, and some calamari. The portion was meager. I asked the server about the portion and the missing clam. He then told me "Are you sure it's small? Big doesn't mean it's gonna be like a mountain"... what kind of reply is that? When I told him one clam was missing, he looked at me, stopped for two seconds and said "Are you sure?" Are you sure? Again, what kind of response is that? He then said he would ask the kitchen to cook me more pasta. I asked to cancel my dish. I had no appetite after the condescending attitude I got from him. Another server came to check on us later, and I explained my dissatisfaction. He was apologetic. But perhaps the management needs to be aware of servers such as the one we had, who could ruin a customer's visit and a restaurant's reputation just like that. read more

Excellent "old school" Italian restaurant where things are done correctly. The cozy holiday ambiance added to the fine dining experience. For starters we shared a delicious order of baked clams. The highlight however was the oysters on a half shell. Freshly perfect this could've been the stand alone meal. Our main courses included the standard but good chicken parmigiana with spaghetti. The true winner here though was the exceptionally tender filet mignon loaded with mushrooms and vegetables. Better than most overpriced steakhouses. My friends and I stumbled upon this nice restaurant by accident. It's located close to Grand Central Station. We were greeted quickly, were able to check our coats and seated almost immediately. 6 of us were seated at a nice sized round table. Surprisingly we felt like we had a good amount of spice. Our waiter was attentive and kind. There was also always someone refilling waters without being asked. The menu is large and offers something for everyone; fish, chicken, vegetarian, steak and well you get the idea. The food was phenomenal. The chicken Parmesan was enough for two sittings. I brought half home and when I ate it the next day it was still delicious. When the leftovers are good you know it's good food. I enjoyed a mojito with my meal and they did not skimp on the mint. The drink was perfection and a nice touch. For dessert I indulged in a freshly Stuffed Cannoli. Initially I had no intention of sharing my dessert but once I tasted the filling I had to make my friends experience it. Yes it had the WOW factor.
