Seriously solid diner breakfast experience all around. For some reason, until recently, I had always assumed Norma's was a Tex-Mex place...but not, it's a good old-fashioned diner type place. Once I figured that out, I also figured it was worth a try for breakfast. Hubby and I came on a Saturday morning and although the place was busy, we were seated right away. Service was good and friendly the entire time. I ordered migas and Hubby got an omelet. Food came out quick, hot fresh, and plentiful. I enjoyed my meal and had leftovers for another day. Been a regular at the other locations but will never come back here. --server asked if host was seating that table, then rolled her eyes, not realizing I was being seated there. --ordered meatloaf w sauce on the side, carrots, squash and broccoli rice soup casserole. --got pinto beans and basically cheese soup with 2 pieces of broccoli and almost no rice. Disgusting. --squash had NO flavor --meatloaf was undercooked --had to fill my own water glass once --no one came to check at all during the meal --even the roll was cold Not coming back -- ever. I've been way too excited to write this review because Norma's is A M A Z I N G. I was definitely annoyed at first with the long lunch wait and the less than pleasant hostesses, but it all got pushed aside when I took my first bite. We ordered a cheeseburger with tots, the chicken fried steak and had a cup of chicken and rice soup. The rolls/cornbread were brought out first and I tried to stay away but they were too tasty to not. So I did. Next came the chicken and rice soup and my soup world will never be the same. IT WAS DELICIOUS in every way. Hearty, flavorful, warm and my new favorite. Next came our meal and the burger was juicy, tater tots cooked perfectly (and with a huge portion) and the chicken fried steak was standard but still noteworthy. After my tummy and heart were full, the bill came to less than $20. And to top it off - the waiter was so kind and attentive! First time here. My mom & I were greeted with the statement that they were short on help so service would not be up to the usual expectations. Hmmmm. Ok. Our waitress showed up in a reasonable amount of time & took our order. Food was ok. The fresh biscuits were yummy. However, halfway through our meal, our server stuck her portable credit card machine in our faces & told us to check out. I told her to come back, we were eating. She comes back a few minutes later & mom gives her a credit card. The waitress points the machine down for my mom to sign... mind you, my mother has very limited arm movement - and tells the girl that the signature did not register. I watch this chick scribble on the machine for the signature. Mom asks her "Did you just sign my name?" AND she says everythingis fine & walks off. . At no point did mom have an opportunity to add a tip. She leaves & offers NO receipt.so we get up & ask for one. She brings one over & SHE had left herself a $6 tip. Mom & I go talk to Will, the supposed manager. He confronts the waitress & asks if she signed. She says no, she didn't sign mom's name. So I interrupt & said that I watched her scribble on her machine for the name. She admitted she scribbled but she didn't sign. Ummm, credit card theft anyone!!! Will decides that he will refund the tip money and he will have a stern talk with her. I guarantee if she worked for me, she would no longer be employed. Pretty sure most people would call that theft & credit card fraud. I wonder how many other elderly people she has taken advantage of. Disclaimer: I am the husband of a food blogger. We love going to resturants trying new foods other foodies like us have enjoyed and raved about meeting staffer, manager's ect. We had a great time this morning at Norma's. Wife has craving their bascits and chillie cheese fries and i was just hungry from a night of drinking lol. We were served by the sweetest waitress (Jennifer), she was full of energy and seemed very happy to be there(working) and to see that made us feel not only welcome but absolutely solidified our decision to dine there this morning. We never wanted for anything, and i know if you get a chance to have Jennifer at Norma's then get ready for a good time. I had the Famous Burger and Chillie cheese fries and wifey had the Omelet, biscuit and has hash browns. Great amount of food #couldn'tFinish lol. Our waitress greeted us with a "hun" and a "sugar". When she took our order she then had a a sassy quip about how I am feeding into the pregnant lady stereotype by ordering the fried pickles. I liked her right away. Every waitress who works at a diner like Norma's should have some personality. So yeah - I had the fried pickles, and they were delicious. I also has the huevos rancheros. Hey, I'm pregnant. Don't judge me. While the huevos rancheros aren't the traditional kind you'll find at Mexican restaurants, it was still a good meal. We visited during the week and the other diners were cops and blue-hairs from the neighborhood. This is a good sign: everyone knows cops eat at good places, and if the grandparents are here - then it must be good bang for buck. Anyway, this location has a good thing going. I've been to the Norma's in Oak Cliff, and having loved it, I was really looking forward to eating at this location. Unfortunately, it was a 3 star experience at best, though I'm really hoping it was just an off night for them. Our waitress wasn't unfriendly, but she wasn't particularly warm either. She never brought us the complimentary bread and rolls (I at first thought maybe they had run out since she never mentioned them and we came in at 7:15 when they close at 8pm, but as we were leaving I saw that all of the tables around us, even those who came in after us, had them) and she never refilled our drinks nor seemed to even notice that they were low. The woman who we then paid at the counter was curt and not very friendly. As for the food, I was really craving Chicken Fried Steak and remembered the Oak Cliff location's as being pretty darn good. Unfortunately, my steak tonight seemed to be floating in extra breading; it's hard to describe but it honestly looked as if someone had put a jacket that was 3 sizes too big over a tiny body, except the jacket was the fried breading in this case and the body was the steak. The steak itself tasted okay but it pretty much defeated the "chicken fried" part. Seriously sad about it still. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak as well, and his was equally disappointing. I ordered mashed potatoes with gravy, and as another review mentioned, the potatoes were oddly tangy, almost as if mixed with lemon juice. I also had the glazed carrots and the green bean casserole. Both of the items tasted okay but they were all lukewarm, nothing was hot. I would have sent it all back but the waitress never came by and we were all super hungry by this point, so I just went ahead and ate it. The only reason I am giving it 3 stars and not less is because of my fond memories of the other location and my hope that tonight was just an outlier. Ive eaten at Norma's on the tDallas Tollway and the original Norma's in oak cliff. This one on 75 is the most awful. I hate to say. The staff just ignored my daughter and I as we waited at the door. (While the staff just chatted). With all the available tables we were seated close by the kitchen. I'm thinking fine. The waitress probably needs folks. The good was okay but honestly the atmosphere made it taste bad. I kept feeling them watching us and saying stuff. I won't be returning to this location. read more

It was, officially, Texas Chicken Fried Steak Day, so where else would one go in Dallas than Norma's? Both 'A' and I have been to Norma's original location in Oak Cliff since the pre-Yelp days. For the first time, we decided to try one of their newer locations, in this case, Park Lane. The Park Lane location is clean and bright. It seems spacious and a little less diner-like than the OC original, probably because it's in a shopping center. We were seated quickly and the great service began immediately. I ordered the CFS Blue Plate Special with mashed potatos, navy beans and steamed broccoli. Healthy and crunchy 'A' ordered the kale salad instead of the broccoli. I would have ordered a Lone Star Longneck, in keeping with the solemnity of the occasion, but Norma's doesn't serve alcohol. The server told us that we could have brought some with us; I never knew that Norma's was BYOB! The food arrived reasonably quickly. 'A' took one bite of the kale salad and discovered that the dressing was sweet. While it may have been delicious dressing, 'A' doesn't like sweet dressing. She spoke with the server who immediately swapped the salad out for some steamed broccoli. We both loved the CFS. The surprise was the navy beans; cooked with bacon, they were really good! We didn't have room for a piece of their great pie. We will be back soon! And TX CFS Day at Norma's may become a tradition. read more

So today my husband and I took our two kiddos to Norma's based on the awesome reviews here on Yelp, but can I just say this is probably the worst breakfast I've had in a really long time. I'm so bummed because everyone said how awesome their chicken fried steak was. Unfortunately it is probably the thinnest, most dry piece of meat I've ever had. The eggs were oily as can be and the bacon tasted like it was days old. My kiddos loved the pancake, so there's a positive. My other complaint was our waitress, she was friendly.. just not attentive in anyway. I had to ask for water refills for myself and kids a few times.. and the check was brought about 5-7 mins after our food was given to us. Just an all around lame experience. read more

To be honest, I'm impressed! I was expecting low quality food since it seemed like a small business, I was WRONG! The biscuit are really thick but they aren't dense as they seem, they have a really good buttery flavor. THE BEST THING I TASTES WAS CBGB!!! Wow it was really good and the price was affordable the chicken was flaky, bacon was crispy, but what set it all off was the delicious creamy gravy. It's a explosion of flavor. The Big Eaters plate was nothing special same o same o. Ok' Number 7 is REALLY spicy, this is coming from a person who loves spice, or maybe that day's jalapeños were simply too spicy. Norma's was a great hit for me. So much so that it is my new breakfast spot. I don't like the type of biscuits they serve (I believe it's buttermilk). But that is just a personal preference. Every item they cook has a skillfully delicious amount of flavor (aka not shy with the butter) but yet they still maintain fluffy eggs and textured hash browns. I have been to this restaurant location 3 or 4 times always good. Been to the other normas and they're good. But I went the other night and it was AWFUL horrible. Ordered chicken fried chicken to go along with 3 other meals for family and it was gross. The potatoes were dry, gravy didn't even help. Got home my carrots were missing. The chicken dumplings had like 2 pieces of chicken in it and several of my vegetable containers were busted and leaked everywhere. They were super slow. Took almost 30 min to get my disgusting food which made it even worse. Im hoping they were having an off night. But still check ur to go before u leave. That was my mistake. read more

BE CAREFUL WITH THIS PLACE! Always keep your receipt when you leave. TWICE now they have added to the tip after I left and the charge on my credit card was more than what I signed for. Food is great, but the service is usually subpar and it is absolutely unacceptable to alter the total on the ticket....and if it's happened TWICE to me alone, I can't even imagine how often they're doing this and getting away with it. My sil got the country fried steak with 3 sides and it was fresh and good. Came during lunch on a Friday, waited for 5-10mins like they said and was seated. Oh my goodness... that chicken fried steak is famous for good reason! The juicy steak hiding on the inside is perfectly complemented by the outside's slightly crispy breading, and it's all the perfect portion to eat. That's right, I finished the entire steak! The entree comes with a choice of three sides, and I chose fried okra, green beans, and mashed potatoes. I always love the green beans at southern restaurants, so I'm not going to say too much about those, but that fried okra! Soooo good! Definitely get it if you're a fried okra kind of person. Like me. After I tried this fried okra. On another note, service was really excellent at this restaurant. We were greeted kindly, given seats, and the menu was explained to us in it's entirety when we sat down. All questions were answered, and it really felt like a safe place to ask. Awesome comfort food, fast service, and a friendly server (Victor) that actually checks on you and makes sure everything is going well. I ordered decaf coffee, and the chicken and dressing with side salad, mashed potatoes (regretted ordering so much starch), turnip greens and a roll with cinnamon spread. All of it was so good! I did have to add salt and pepper, which isn't a big deal to me, knowing that they have to keep things bland for the health conscience and different age groups. Meh. Looked for a place to have breakfast before heading out of town, and Norma's looked promising. It was a little confusing for me getting there as Apple maps takes you somewhere totally different, but I found it on my own. There is a large parking area with plenty of parking. I went closer to lunch time, and it was a busy weekday, and I still found a parking spot close very easily. The interior is clean and welcoming, and the staff are friendly too. I ordered the chicken fried steak, two eggs over medium with a biscuit. It came out extraordinarily fast (seriously) and later I realized why. The eggs were perfect, the biscuit was fluffy and delicious, and the chicken fried steak? It was raw. Like not cooked at all in the center. It was very disappointing. I don't know the point in serving huge portions if you can only eat a fraction of it because it's not cooked. At any rate, I may return possibly for pancakes or migas, but I won't be getting any CFS again. read more
