This place is quite good. Located at the intersection of Hwy 41 and Hwy 7, spitting distance from downtown Excelsior, North Coop is easily found on the Southwest corner. Overall, the decor is not something one may oh and ah over, but it is clean and open, and one is not far from the horseshoe bar wherever one sits. TVs also adorn most of the muted grey/green walls to keep an eye on a game you might be interested in, or bored with the present company. We were here from brunch, and the menu is plentiful and awesome. It was truly difficult to make a choice here, and I will state right now, I am coming back for an opportunity to try a number of other items. After agonizing over my options I went with the Chicken and waffles. You have the option of flavoring your fried chicken with options such as Nashville Hot, Maple Bacon, Buffalo, Firebird, and a couple of others that I can't recall. I opted for Nashville Hot, which was quite good. There was a little heat to it...what I might call Minnesota Hot. The waffle? Well, it was a waffle and tasted as such, and not much to say about it. Overall really enjoyable. The other entrée at our table was the Southern BLT. This was really good. Historically, I have not been a big fan of fried green tomatoes, but their preparation of the fried green tomatoes might have changed my outlook on them. They were lightly floured/battered and cooked lightly brown. Adding these to the slabs of bacon made for a wonderful sandwich. The sandwich is sizable enough that one could share it with another and walk away sated. Being first-timers here, we also splurged on a couple of sides just to see how they were. The grits were awesome and would eat those any day with a fried egg on top. Brisket bark was really good too. It had a good smoke on it and I LOVE their blueberry BBQ sauce! It looks like their specialty drinks have promise. Since it was brunch we tried their bloody Mary, and it was pretty good. Next time I will be in for their KY coffee which looks pretty awesome. Looking forward to coming back here, even if it is a way out of the way. You should certainly make a trip out here and give it a shot. I don't think you will be disappointed. read more

Came here for dinner Tuesday, May 28, 2019, after hearing about it and of course checking Yelp. That area of town is in desperate need of a restaurant. Families stranded at the MMW and Freeman fields will appreciate this. It is very nice inside and out. Booths, high and low tops. Outside is where we sat and the pergola and tables are very nice. The road noise off the 41 is loud, but not so much conversation is drowned out. The southern flare is unusual, which should make this a destination just to have something different. I got the Cajun catfish with slaw and cornbread. The cornbread is large, spongy and really good. I am a slaw freak, and usually cannot stand creamy slaw like say, KFC has. This is not at all like KFC. It is creamy but seems healthier. Really good. My ancient in-laws who love KFC slaw hated it. The under 80 crowd loved it. Catfish was also very good. I would have preferred a blackened non Cajun flavor because catfish is a flavorful fish on its own, but hey, this is their deal. I would get the exact platter again. Wife got shrimp and cheesy grits. While I find the concept of grits disgusting based on a bad experience decades ago, she is a grits lover and said they were yummy. Others in our party got ribs, fried chicken and a burger. They loved the smashed potatoes. Chicken was very good but bony, if that makes sense. The staff is super nice. Three hosts at the front podium. Waitress was perfect. Not bugging us but also there when we wanted something. Good beer selection, and in 16 or 25oz drafts, but IMO, they should go completely local, as in maybe the Lake Minnetonka rim breweries out to Victoria and Hopkins. That would be a great selection. To give them credit, they do have Excelsior Brewing and Unmapped (Glen Lake area of Minnetonka- great IPA), but they could also have taps from ENKI in Victoria, Wayzata Brew Works and LTD in Hopkins. The other MN tap beers they have are Modist (Minneapolis), Lift Bridge (Stillwater), Surly (Minneapolis), Summit (St Paul), Castle Danger (Two Harbors) and Grain Belt/Schell (New Ulm). Plus three non-MN drafts and various bottled beer. And dogs. There were two dogs out on the deck. That made my wife an instant return customer. There were two gals drinking wine with their dogs. Great vibe for that. I can see coming back with our dogs on the deck and having a 25oz Unmapped No Trace IPA So why only four stars? There were some minor things that we think were due to the place only being open a week. In time they will perfect the system and probably move up to five stars. read more

Wow what a pleasant surprise this place is. Located across 7 from cub foods in what used to be a bit of a dodgy strip mall is this amazing restaurant. They've completely redone the outside and added an outdoor patio! North Coop is a southern style restaurant complete with fried chicken (amazing), sides including macaroni and cheese, collard greens, corn bread, etc. nice variety in the menu. Lots of options all reasonably priced! They have great whiskey drinks And many different options. The interior is a very open clean modern look with a bit of a southern flair! We had fried chicken, fried pickles, chips, macaroni and cheese as well as some amazing brisket ends. All the food was excellent especially for only being open for 3 days. Wonderful service as well!! Amazing! We started with cocktails which were great, followed by the Mac n cheese balls which were sooooo good!! I had the fried chicken sandwich which was excellent. My husband ordered the fried chicken with a side of baked beans and cornbread. I have to say..... the corn bread is excellent! After having a bite of his I insisted that we order extra cornbread. Even our daughters grilled cheese sandwich was good, haha! Our waiter, Dominick was super personable and friendly. We will definitely be back..... maybe tomorrow. read more

They should be honest and just say they make all burgers well-done. I ordered the Brisket Bark, burnt brisket ends. It was horrible and not even edible. The fried chicken was very mediocre. I ordered two sides and they were both terrible. The coleslaw was bland and the smashed potatoes were very oily. I couldn't taste any garlic on the potatoes. At least they of done was added salt and pepper. I give three stars only because it's covid, and I expect the food to be a little more lackluster after a trip in a takeout container. Service was quick and curbside efficient. Chicken tenders - oddly seasoned with something I couldn't quite place. Needed salt, and the breading was pale and soggy. Maple bacon burger was the best of the bunch. Spicy and sweet- it has promise. Southern burger was meh. Burger texture and cook was good, but in the end it was akin to cream cheese piled on a burger. The side were all zeros. Chips were straight from the bag Lays and not house made. Fries were basic food service fries with no salt or seasoning. For $16 burgers with a $2 fries upcharge, meals felt overpriced for the quality of the food. We tried a number of sauces and none tasted homemade or were anything special. read more

I was very excited to try this place out. I ordered take out which was pretty fast. I got 1/4 "Nashville hot" white chicken with Mac and cheese and cornbread. I appreciated how much meat it served it wasn't just mostly bone however I would not say it was at all hot. I suppose that's Minnesota spice for you but considering it's a southern food joint I was expecting a something more. It tasted very sweet almost like if there were flakes of pineapple on it. The Mac and cheese I opted for instead of the crispy potatoes due to portion difference.... the reviews hyped it up so much but it honestly just tasted like boiled noodles, which is such a let down they look so creamy and good. It's right off Highway 7 right before Highway 41, (quick access by exiting at gas station entrance); located on the end of the strip-mall with Large beautiful outdoor patio! We were greeted to a busy, yet outstanding CLEAN restaurant (extra staff were proactively cleaning) and they were amazingly friendly staff. We ordered off both the 'Brunch' and 'Lunch' menus. Highly recommend Eggs Benedict and the McRibb Sandwich! (better than M*D's). Everything we ordered came out very quick, cooked perfect and rich with flavor! As a Chicago guy who did a quick stop in Excelsior MN for a bite before my flight... I can share North Coop is a 5 star location: from food to service to decor! Best catfish sandwich I've had in a looong time. The brisket bark is basically Chislic but brisket and with a great berry chipotle sauce. The 1/4 chicken was perfectly cooked. Will be making this a regular stop. Plus they do curbside pickup so you can stay in your car. read more

We are from the south, Alabama to be exact. I really do understand the balance to make southern dishes without choking the locals with too much spice, salt, or ... flavor. But the shrimp and grits were terrible. I would call it more like shrimp and polenta. The shrimp had some flavor but was very lack luster. The biscuits were interesting. I can't recall ever having or seeing biscuits like what was served. My wife was mostly disappointed with the pimento cheese. It just didn't taste good. Overall, the restaurant staff is super friendly and the location is nice. But for all of you who tell your friends this is authentic southern, great I am glad you like it! But, my wife and all of the cooks in our family have a very different opinion on what southern food is all about. This ain't it and it isn't even close. Saw this place as new and been wanting to give it a try. Pretty busy for a Monday but still able to seat our party of 3 within 20 minutes. Don't let the fact it is in a strip mall deter you, some of the best places I know are in strip malls. Restaurant is decorated to match its name and we were promptly greated. When seated the staff was friendly, attentive, and was able to make some great recommendations. Started with the burnt brisket tips which come with a nice blueberry bbq sauce and some green onions. Both combinations are very flavorful. For entrees we did: Chicken and waffles - my daughter loves this combi and these did not disappoint. A full size round waffle and a crispy chicken breast with your choice of side which she chose mac and cheese. She gobbled it up with all but a few pieces so she could have dessert. 1/4 White Fried Chicken with the smashed potatoes and it comes with a piece of cornbread. Ordered the chicken honey hot dipped and it was delicious. Nice and juicy, a little spice, and just the right amount of sweet. Smashed potatoes were very good, with nice garlic flavor, buttery and tasty. The cornbread was good, but rest of the plate was better. It tasted great swiped through the leftover sauce, though. Fried Chicken Sandwich with the maple bacon flavor and upgrade to mac and cheese side. The chicken was properly done where is was crispy and moist at the same time. The maple bacon flavor was outstanding. The sandwhich also has pickle on it which add to the overall taste. The mac and cheese was well done, just a tad salt and pepper for my liking. We finished dinner off with a strawberry shortcake. The shortcake was a nicely done southern style biscuit, nicely maserated strawberries, and what tasted like homemade whipped cream. We polished it off quickly so no photo (sorry). Definitely worth trying this place out. They are popular so be prepared to maybe wait a small amout of time. I love this place. Really, really. We made our first trek here a couple weeks ago and I struggled deciding what to order & finally deciding on the NCRib sandwich. My husband ordered the ¼ chicken dinner, and my dad ordered the portables burger. We were all very pleased! So much that we ordered a few more items to go, which my kids devoured (they did eat dinner before). We came back a week later with another friend and once again the food was amazing. This place has some promise, but our meal was average. The menus looks fantastic. Nashville Chicken in Minnetonka ? We were excited, but let down once the food arrived. The chicken was barely seasoned and breading didn't stick to the skin as expected. The Nashville sauce was WAY off base. I've had Nashville chicken and basic fried chicken all over the south. I have also made it myself with a high degree of success. The North Coop sauce was oily with little flavor. Yes, Nashville chicken uses oil in the sauce , but this ain't it. If you want a true southerner to jump back behind the steel and show you how to make Nashville chicken, more than happy to oblige. My son had a smoked turkey sandwich, which was mediocre. Our smashed potatoes and greens were avg at best. Greens had no spice , no pork and weren't served with vinegar. I love love what you guys are trying to do here. It's just "almost" there. This establishment has just opened as of last Wednesday. It wasn't overly busy but we decided to eat on their patio. We started with the Brisket burnt ends and they were absolutely delish. My boyfriend chose the Catfish Po Boy and he said it was delish. I went with the Turkey sandwich with a side of Mac and Cheese as well as beans. The turkey was excellent and everything tasted fresh. The mac wasn't warm but it has good flavor. The beans are good but I was too full to try more. We then took a fruit cobbler home. The dessert was very tasty and so was the ice cream. A nice menu with lots of choices, most unhealthy and unhealthier, but hey, you're there for the food, not for a physical. The service is very attentive and they pay close attention to food preparation if you tell them about allergies. Very flavorful brisket, burnt ends (an appetizer that can be a small meal in itself), and po' boy sandwiches. read more

We ordered burnt (brisket) ends with blueberry BBQ sauce (we really enjoyed but think it'd be even better if the sauce was thicker), salt & vinegar chips with onion dip - so good! And then we split the fried chicken sandwich with Nashville hot spice and it was excellent! We both ordered beers and my husband got a whiskey flight. We've been a few times now and have enjoyed most everything! The chicken hasn't disappointed. Nice, crispy and tasty. I like it with the elote sauce. The Mac and cheese side is good, but the cornbread isn't anything special -- quite oily and doesn't taste fresh from the oven (maybe it's not). We love the brisket bark and get it without fail now. The blueberry sauce is a nice twist. For vegetarians, there are some salads but that's it. It's a southern place, so limited veg options are probably to be expected. Note: IMO, the 1/4 chicken was enough for dinner and to bring to lunch the next day. Nice atmosphere, if a bit loud. Large patio outside. Good service. My gf and I ate here on Sat for an early dinner. We were simply satisfied with our meals. We started off with the beef steak tips served with a blueberry barbeque sauce on the side. I also enjoyed our entrys. My gf had a Turkey sandwhich which she said was delicious and tasty as well as my entree which was the catfish po boy sandwhich with fries. Overall our waiter was quick with our service and our entire meal dining was above and beyond. Yeah, I'll go back, probably on a rainy Sunday to catch the ball game or spend some time having a few beers with friends. I LOVE fried chicken, and was stoked to hear about a southern cuisine within a few miles of our home. We tried the Brisket Bark which was pretty good with the dipping sauce. The deep fried pickles were a bit greasy, but still I liked the heat on the pickle as well. Fried chicken was a disappointment. I ordered both the original and Tennessee hot... there was no crunch, nothing crispy and it was a lot like KFC out of the bucket. :( It was a far cry from Handsome Hog, Revival and Birch's in Long Lake. THE shining star was the Mac and Cheese. My buddy actually went back and got a big to go order for fathers day. read more

I have been here twice with my husband. He loved the Jambalaya and the Salmon. I don't eat meat, am gluten free, and have food sensitivities. I am so incredibly thankful for a restaurant that gives me something else to eat besides a salad, nachos, veggie burger, or gluten free pizza. The Veggie Stack sandwich with a gluten free bun is awesome!!!! My tummy feels so happy after eating it. It may not seem like much, but for me, it is huge!!!!! I love this place.
