Well this was a delight! I was coming out of a performance at NYU recently looking for a restaurant, and we stumbled across North Square. It's a charming little eatery located just off Washington Square Park, putting an original spin on casual-chic American dining. We had a delicious salmon tartare as a first course, followed by their burger which landed as any good burger should. I often find dessert to be the weak point of restaurants like this, so I was pleasantly surprised by their key lime pie which was nicely tart and balanced with fresh fruit and coulis. Had a great time visiting the North Square bar while in town. I didn't get a chance to try the food this trip, but would love to in the future! The bar is cozy and quaint, in a great location nestled in the Washington Square Hotel, the cocktails are tasty, and my bartender (shout out David!) was so sweet! I had a Manhattan and Cranberry Hot Toddy, both delicious! Although seasonal, the CHT was a can't miss option. Very unique. The prices aren't bad either. After a nearby park event, stopped in here for brunch on a Saturday afternoon. Considering the crowds outside, was surprised this place didn't have more business, especially with the brunch deals. For ($25), you get a choice of entree, along with coffee and a brunch drink. Opted for the herb omelette, which had cheese and spinach inside. Well made eggs, actually fluffy overall with a good balance in the fillings. The side salad had a refreshing vinaigrette on top. The star was the butternut squash, which was soft and glutinous. The vegetables were also pretty good with the balsalmic, but they tasted like they were just blanched--more definitely could've been done, like sauteeing in some herbed butter. Sirloin w Szechuan peppercorn, wasabi mashed potatoes, and Chinese broccoli (gai lan). Concept over Execution. The floral flavor of the peppercorn and hoisin reduction pairs really well with the sirloin. Wasabi and potato also wen well together. The dish felt a bit disjointed, which makes sense because they threw two flavors from different East Asian cultures onto one plate. The potatoes would've done better paired with chili oil, cumin, or simply garlic. Bread pudding w vanilla ice cream and an intense cranberry sauce. The nuts in the bread pudding was not my style, but flavor overall was pretty good. Not really worth getting it again, though. read more

Came by for breakfast the other day and it was a mediocre experience. Apparently the restaurant is attached to a hotel. Both indoor and outdoor dining was available. The restaurant was completely empty first thing on a Saturday morning. The front of the house seemed new and slightly confused. Staff wore a mask covering their mouth and nose and some even wore vinyl gloves. The smoked salmon eggs Benedict was ok. The eggs were poached well and the hollandaise sauce was ok. The English muffin was slightly over toasted and the smoked salmon was a thin slice... The potatoes were pretty unique although they didn't taste too fresh. My friends and I had a brief reunion in NYC - we decided to book a reservation fat North Square as knew we'd be in the mood for good American cuisine after golfing at Chelsea Piers. I'd say it was about a 20 minute walk to get to the restaurant - right near the NYU "campus" along Washington Square Park. Outside, the restaurant has multiple enclosed booths for people who are uncomfortable with eating indoors. We felt comfortable with eating inside, which made sense since it was a tad chilly. Plus, there was plenty of space inside - the dining room is not tiny. We were greeted by multiple people and were immediately seated in a comfy booth. There were a few other diners inside, so we weren't alone...but unfortunately many people in NYC are still a tad nervous about being indoors. The menu is not extensive, which actually helped me since I often take forever to pick a meal. We started off with a small salad, which was delicious - we split it since we did not want a large appetizer. They put bits of bacon and pecan along with apple in it! I was sipping on a delicious glass of cabernet sauvignon (I forget the winery, oops!) while I waited for my LAMB burger - oh yeah, I was in the mood for it. The lamb burger was delicious. I honestly think it could have been cooked a bit more, but I did not say anything because I still enjoyed it and I was starving. The fries that came with the meal were fantastic. I also liked the mustard that came with the burger, it was great. As for my friends, one ordered a chicken salad while another had a cheeseburger - they were both very happy with their choices. I went to North Square for the first time for an office lunch and it was pretty good. The portions are on the small side and it is pricey, however. I ordered a Lavender Bee cocktail, which was delicious. The lavender is pleasant and not overpowering, and it has just the right amount of sweetness (the Bee in the title references honey as an ingredient). For food, I ordered a tempura shrimp sandwich and replaced the salad with fries. The fries were really good. Crispy and addictive and I ate all of them. The sandwich was also really tasty. The bread was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the shrimp was delicious and worked well with the bacon and avocado. I just wish I had more sandwich. Compared to my colleague's steak wrap, it seemed so small. I would definitely get the steak wrap next time for more food that, from what I heard, was just as tasty. read more

(It should be noted that there were other people who had the exact same problem as us when they arrived). I came here for a small school event, hosted by a billionaire entrepreneur in their private dining room with a personal waitress and bartender, just to give you an idea. The service was excellent, with them pacing us well, and the food was super "celebrity chef"-style and innovative. I got the chopped salad with quail egg, the pumpkin salmon entree, and the apricot pear crisp. I loved the combination of the flavors of each dish, and thought every bite was flawless. I went with a large group of 6 and the waiter was extremely kind, patient, and fast. We were in and out in 1.5 hours which I thought was pretty impressive. They give you pastry baskets instead of bread baskets before the food - which is a cute touch. The food itself was pretty mediocre and not worth the price in my opinion. Perhaps it was what I ordered but that seemed to be the consensus at the table. I ordered a Challah French Toast which was really egg-y and dry. The eggs did not taste particularly fresh and the smoked salmon and spinach were folded into the omelet afterwards. I prefer when the ingredients are actually inside the omelet. The fruit salad was also sub-par-- some of the grapes were squishy. I've been here for dinner a few times also. In general, the protein is cooked well. I noticed this spot does not have recent reviews so I am glad to be the recent update. I stopped in here because of the happy hour sign - 50% off beer, wine, well drinks between 3 and 6pm, EVERYDAY!! I got (2) decent NY IPA bottled for $4 each. We also got the salmon tartare and grilled bread. All good! It took a while to get a waiter, but I realize there is a national shortage for help right now which is beyond their control, so I can overlook this minor inconvenience. The inside is very nicely appointed, kinda like a diner vibe, but we stayed outside and the outdoor seating "pavilion" was one of the nicest I have seen in NYC due to covid. Came here for a sunny afternoon near the park a few weeks ago and had a pleasant experience. I ordered the corn chowder which wasn't the best kinda watery and lacked flavored but my meal made up for it the lamb was amazing ! With the advent of the food network, celebrity chefs and continually rising real estate prices in NYC the average diner has to suffer many indignities to enjoy a great meal or taste the latest trends - waiting on long lines, communal seating in cramped restaurants where tables are so close you are sharing a meal with strangers, rushed and less than friendly service, etc... Luckily North Square is a mainstay that DOES NOT subscribe to these latest trends. North Square has a privileged position at the NW corner of Washington Square Park within the basement of the Washington Square Hotel. You are greeted at the door by the host or hostess. The space is all wood tones and warm, muted colors - it feels like a 90s throw back, which is comforting. The cushioned seating and tables offer generous space. The clientele skewed decidedly older because with age comes wisdom. So many excellent choices on the menu, with prices I feel are extremely reasonable - they even offer a $40 prix fixe menu, all sides $5 and extensive, nicely priced wines. Although the delicious bread and olives are awesome, the Small Bite Trio is an excellent way to start with 2 each Tuna Tartare, piquillo pepper & olive tapenade baguette and duck confit roll - its a tasty sample of a few of the apps on the menu. We had an excellent Sancerre Sauvignon Blanc to go with our mains of Seared Sea Scallops and the Arctic Char. The scallops were seared to perfection served with quinoa and spinach. The Arctic Char (similar to Salmon, but a good sustainable seafood choice) was cooked medium rare with a crispy skin on a bed of basil risotto and truffle sauce - fantastic dish! A side of brussel sprouts to share were good, but not the best version I ever had. A shared decadent slice of Dulce de leche cheesecake finished off our meal. The service was wonderfully friendly and attentive throughout. The meal was perfectly paced were we never felt rushed or waiting for anything too long. Being near beautiful Washington Square Park and offering so many delicious items on the menu makes me wished I lived in the area because I would be a regular and it was nice to see many of the diners were. I saw some of the more recent reviews had complaints about the service which made me a little weary before reserving a spot at the Jazz Brunch for my friend's birthday. But, those were definitely off base! The servers were extremely attentive and kind. Not to mention the performers were absolutely wonderful with the restaurant had extremely reasonable prices for New York. My friend and I both got the challah french toast with bacon which came in a filling portion with apple/peach compote, strawberries, and bananas. While the french toast wasn't out of this world amazing, it was good and definitely priced well at $13. With coffee and an extra side of eggs, our bill came out to around $37 (not including tip), which is definitely a bargain in Manhattan since there was no cover charge for the lovely music we got to hear. This is a place I loved....but it has evolved into something that is a mere shadow of its former self. I remember the incredible flower arrangements and the spectacular wine selection and a menu that was a delight to see. But pre-COVID they redid the interior and it lost the warmth and glow of the old. The flowers disappeared. Now post-COVID, the menu selections are just enough so you can find something you want to eat, the service is almost indifferent and inattentive. What happened to the great bread basket we loved and the marinated olives and garlic cloves? So much has been lost over these past years that I barely recognize the place anymore. In its favor, however, the prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is "adult". No throbbing music, perfect for conversation and relaxation unlike so many other places on Seventh or Greenwich Avenue where you can barely hear your companions' conversation. I still like North Square and it may well continue to be a "go to" place but I miss its former self. A totally charming venue. Quiet and intimate with warm pleasant service. We arrived at 6:30 PM on a Friday night. We were their first customers. By the time we left 2 hrs later the place was only half full. Hence ambient noise made for easy conversation. Not an extensive menu but everything was nicely prepared and presented. We went for Sunday jazz brunch in the lounge area which was GREAT the jazz performers carried the experience. They made it feel unique and quant. However the food service was lacking and a strange setup: one waiter for the entire lounge area and one girl in charge of water and coffee. had to ask twice for a cup of coffee and then three more times for milk to go with that coffee so I couldn't actually drink the coffee until about 45 minutes after sitting down. It was almost comical asking them over and over again for the same thing. Food itself was good pumpkin pecan pancakes were delish. Eek, not a very good experience. Important to note that this restaurant is in a hotel and maybe it meets the needs of transient hotel guests who don't know any better, but as a native New Yorker, I can tell you that this restaurant is absolutely not worth going to. Ambiance: As others have mentioned, this is not a place to go for ambiance. It feels as though you are in a pretty old and farty restaurant that could be connected to a cheap hotel/motel. Nobody under 65 in this restaurant, which is not necessarily a problem, if the food and service was good, but unfortunately it wasn't. Food: Better than the ambiance, but not great. We had the tuna tartare which was okay, nothing special. We shared the rack of lamb and filet mignon. The rack of lamb was prepared nicely and was overall good. The filet was not very good -- heavily over-seasoned with peppercorn which overtook the meat. Sides of undercooked steak fries and uninspiring onions also did nothing to enhance the filet. Nothing special here. Service: Sadly, this might have been the worst of all. We had a waitress who simply didn't put much effort in (which maybe isn't surprising given the overall mediocrity of the restaurant itself). For starters, we had some questions about various dishes, and she was unable to really answer any of them. For one of the dishes, she told us "It's hard to explain, you just have to try it to understand." That might be the most unhelpful response -- she must have failed to realize that part of her job is to be able to provide insights about the food to diners so that they can make more informed decisions about what they want to order. Having to try the dish to learn what it's about is not really the answer. What really got me is at the very end of the meal, our server was sitting at a booth with another worker of the restaurant. Admittedly, we were the last table in the restaurant, but even so, it's not acceptable to check out as a server and forget to keep an eye on your table. After dessert, we both had empty water glasses and our server was nowhere to be found. Finally, she emerged from hanging at her booth instead of working, and I asked for some more water. She looked down at the water jugs that had clearly already been emptied and washed out. She seemed to be a bit put out that she'd have to refill the water jug in order to be able to refill our waters. Sensing this and honestly just wanting to get out of this place, I told her it was okay and not to worry. I figured she would of course say something to the extent of "No worries, of course I will get you some more water." Instead, she shocked me and said "Okay" and proceeded to sit back down at her booth. That's right -- a customer of the restaurant asked for some more water, and she actually sat back down without getting more water instead of insisting to of course get more water. Absolute joke -- but again, not sure what standards this restaurant as a whole holds itself to, so maybe this is to be expected. Overall, with thousands of restaurants in the city, there's zero reason to spend a minute of your time or penny of your money at this uninspiring and underwhelming restaurant. read more

Just a small disclaimer that this review concerns food allergies, so if this doesn't apply to you, feel free to scroll past. I went here for breakfast with my husband last week since we were staying at the hotel next door. I'm celiac, and he eats gluten free because of me but he's not allergic. We were going to get breakfast quickly at the hotel but the hotel told us that the only gluten free options available that were safe to eat was at the restaurant, since everything else had cross-contamination risks. We went down to the restaurant and placed our order only for the server to come back and say, "The gluten free muffins are actually touching the other muffins, we keep them side by side in the same case. Is that okay?" I said it was fine because I didn't want to cause a scene and say I didn't think there was anything there I could really eat, as there was no actual practices in place for safe consumption - eg. my husband got gluten free toast but it was made in a shared toaster. I want to give the review one star because I don't understand why they can't just keep gluten free options separated. Why are the gluten free muffins touching the other muffins in the case when the risk for cross contamination is so high? Why can't they be stored in a separate case? How difficult would that be? It honestly feels like apathy on the restaurant's part that they would say that they have "gluten free options" on the menu but not ensure that these items are actually safe for people to eat. My husband had the toast, two muffins, and a sliced banana and said that it was, "Just okay but pretty bland." I sat there and awkwardly watched him eat while Googling actual gluten free breakfast options on my phone - luckily we found another place only a few blocks away. My true rating is 1.5 stars because I want to give half a star to the server who actually took the time to tell me that there were cross-contamination risks. If he didn't, I could have gotten seriously sick, and since I was seeing a Broadway play later that afternoon, I'm glad I didn't have to spend it in the bathroom. THANK YOU! But to the restaurant, I'm warning anyone with serious food allergies to steer clear.
