Extremely rude and disrespectful. Was considering Dave's shop after my Corvette was stolen over the 4th of July weekend and I was shopping around for a specialist to do the inspection with the insurance. Boyfriend spoke to Dave over the phone and he emphasized how much he knew about Corvettes and how great a shop he ran. We stopped by the shop to meet with Dave in person and just get an idea of what his shop looked like as we wanted to ensure my car would be stored safely. When my boyfriend first walked in the front it was extremely cluttered and looks like a hoarder lives there. He came out and my boyfriend let him know who he was, that he had just spoke to him on the phone earlier today and wanted to see his shop. He pointed his fingers at him as if scolding me and yelled " didn't I teach you enough on the phone fuck you!" And closed his front door on him. Refer to invoice 5778 2/17/2014 North Star was recommended by a neighbor. I took my Model A with a 1967 Corvette 327 to North Star to have a hesitation problem and a sloppy steering problem repaired. They replaced a tie rod end and did an alignment and supposedly checked the rest of the suspension. They said they found the timing off and that the hesitation was normal. They quoted $900 while the car was apart. That was pretty steep. They even charged me for the time to go get parts. When I got there they tried to charge me $1120. I paid the $900 just to the car get out of there. The tie rod end was not bad. It was the steering gear box, which was my first suspicion. All the lock nuts on the front suspension were left loose. All 4 hub caps were dented because they used a hammer to put them on. The carb float height was the hesitation problem. The owner talks a good game, but the diagnosis and work quality was bad. David, owner of North Star, refused to provide us with a breakdown of labor done and prices. He listed $2,000 and 11 hours. That's it! I asked for him multiple times over 4 weeks and he refused. The bill ended up being twice as much as his original estimate, and since David won't explain why I don't know what work, or parts he provided. Also, David was extremely rude, and indignant. He actually said, "Can you read English?" when I was explaining his invoice lacked any specific information. DON'T GO TO NORTH STAR. Horrible service and a total Fraud!!! read more

First I want to say is " DON'T BRING YOUR CAR HERE"...Short /long story...All I wanted was a valve job....approx $9,000.00 later...Yes nine thousand dollars (AFTER THE 20% discount for cash) later ......1 week later it wouldn't pass smog...approx $500.00 dollars later and "fixed by Dave".. then it passed....the final insult was when I went to pick it up Dave said " oh,I smelled a little gas under the hood"...I found the problem...the connection from the gas tank,AT the carburetor ( which he had to be removed to do the valve job)...HAD BEEN STRIPPED AND SOME HORSE SH*T PUTTY had been used to seal it,...I think , to get it away from the garage long enough... causing a dangerous situation to develop. I have been in the automobile repair business for 45 years and pride myself on customer service and this Dave guy is the worst most disrespectful business man I ever ever come across . He talks a good game up front but is Rude and extremely disrespectful and not very smart . His shop has a bunch of junk cars everywhere and the office looks like a hoarder lives there pretty shady place . I cannot recommend this place enough! If I could give 10 stars I would. I took my corvette here that needed a major repair, and Dave walked me around the car on the lift and explained everything perfectly, showed me the broken parts and why they were broken, and showed me the new parts. My car was finished far before I anticipated with constant updates and I got a great deal! The last time I took my corvette there, Dave even gave me a ride home, and my car was fixed the very next day. This shop is amazing and I wouldn't take my cars anywhere else!. read more

I had a weird squeak coming from my clutch and some battery issues on my Corvette, so I called to see if these folks could help. They took my car in that day, and not only did they fix both issues (including getting me a new battery under warranty), they also fixed the air dam I'd broken years ago, changed my air filter, changed my front tires, and alerted me to a couple of things to keep an eye on that didn't need immediate fixing. The cost of this? LESS than I've spent for just a set of front tires from Wheel Works!! Very happy with these guys!! read more

I had a C5, which I diagnosed with a leaky butt via folks on the Corvette forum. I asked Dave to diagnose and repair it. He and Dale verified the problem, fixed it with no nonsense, and showed me the old leaky seals. I talked with Dave so much about Vettes, that I accidentally paid him too much. Took my C5 here once.... I needed to get a auto cross alignment and while talking to the owner about the suspension I was going to install myself he quoted me a very cheap price to do the swap. I figured since they had decent reviews and a good price, why not. Well..... While the simple swap was taking place (z06 sprins/sways and billstein shocks) I was called with "reasons" why it was hard to do so it would be more expensive. Since my car was already taken apart I couldn't drive it home and do the rest myself. The $200 swap and $140ish alignment turned into a $600 fiasco. The owner even told me it takes 45 minutes to remove a suspension module that takes 3-5 minutes (in the truck and visible after pulling off the interior panel)... I am younger than the average vette owner and much much more knowledgable so after this overpriced BS shop was finished I had a bad taste in my mouth. The deal was for them to keep the stock parts and give me a deal on the swap. They agreed to this after seeing the condition of the springs and shocks ( visibly leaking). The only reason they get two stars is because the mechanic there is very knowledgable and does good work. Dave the owner may know c3's but not much about the new abs/traction electronics so he chose to blow smoke rather than be honest. read more

Excellent service. A bit slow on some repairs, but quality is always good. Mostly works on Corvettes and Camaros.

The guys here at North Star are real personable. They're experts, too. Although they're usually in the business of servicing conventional cars like Corvettes, they didn't have any trouble (or qualms) helping me out on my exotic '08 Corolla. Absolutely the most knowledgeable people (especially Dave) there are. You want your car worked on by these people. Dave knows so much about GM cars (especially Vettes and Camaros) including the good, the bad, and the ugly. You will *not* be sorry about taking your car to his shop. I have been taking my C5 Corvette to Dave at North Star for the last 14-15 years. I usually just need routine maintenance, but also have had new brakes/rotors & new tires installed by them. Always great service from drop off to pick up. One time I had a major problem with the engine running rough. It took Dale a few days to troubleshoot & find the problem. Had my Tire Rack tires sent here for my [non-Corvette]. Tires arrived in less than 24 hours. Dale made time to get me quickly in and out of there, and also caught a mislabeling in the Tire Rack email that if it had not been a mislabel, would have been the wrong tire. Really appreciated him taking the time on the phone with me (and I think even with TR) to get that straight. Took the time to mount my correction weights where they wouldn't be seen, even though I didn't think to ask for that. I've been taking my 1995 C4 to North Star since about 2003. I've had fairly extensive repair work done over the years as I tend to be quite anal in maintaining my car. The attention to detail and quality of their work is simply outstanding. While these qualities are hard to find in one shop, there is one more quality you'll find here. This is the rarest of them all and it's honesty. How many mechanics do you know that will tell you that the work you're considering doesn't need to be done yet? How about being told to wait for other work being needed before replacing a cheap part that would entail a lot of labor? (Rear main oil seal had small leak, was told to wait till I needed clutch work, "told you I was anal") Not only do you get great service, North Star will inspect your Corvette and tell you about any discovered issues and a rough estimate of when those issues will need to be addressed.
