This review is for the Diner only. Been here 4-5 times now over the past couple of years since it's close by. Handmade shakes are good, everything else is mediocre to bad including the service. Latest experience was for breakfast: Chicken fried steak - soggy crust, broken gravy, undercooked/unseasoned hash browns, over cooked sunny side up eggs - overall bad. Pancakes - had they been reheated? Top one on the stack was hard and crusty, very flat, scrambled eggs were overcooked on way too high heat, bacon half cooked crispy, half chewy? - overall really bad. BLAT - bacon good, bread way too thick and under toasted, avocado still had pit attached and was very sloppily added to the sandwich - overall mediocre. Every visit has left with me the impression that whoever runs this place has little passion or care for food. I guess they focus on the Shanghai room and the diner is just an afterthought? Been hoping they'd turn things around but at this point it's a consistent 2 star experience. Not sure how anyone would rate this as 4 or 5 star based on the diner. I wouldn't eat here again even late night post bar time. read more

This place is TERRIBLE. The food, the decor, the ants.... Did they even try with this place? Seriously. Where do they order from? I don't even think the cheapest Sysco options are this terrible. A bit of a confused look was offered when asked if the "veggie burger" was beef style or garden style. She should have said neither - a peach colored dharma-initiative patty perhaps! Are they serving generic steak fries barely cooked? The pickles slices were so thin and watery they were translucent. I REALLY wish we had noticed the broken window with tape on it and the ants crawling - to get out of this place?! before we ordered and *tried* to eat our meals. My wife's dish of eggs and hashbrowns didn't look quite as bad although she barely touched any of it after it was discovered that it was completely tasteless. The hashbrowns were of fairly terrible quality as well. I get why this place is open 24 hours and attached to a bar - the only time they could pass of their offerings as food is when people are drunk. Seriously - this place is the worst. First time in: Came in with a friend to work for part of the day. Waiter was extremely unfriendly and inattentive. We were friendly and kind towards him but he was cold towards us and only cared about talking to a guy he knew sitting at the bar. Additionally our server didn't know the WiFi password so he had us enter random passwords until it worked. Food was average or slightly below far from anything to write home about. Our booth was falling apart and if I leaned backwards the back was already breaking off. The music was extremely aggressive for 12-1pm... Obnoxious, loud and bad type of music that very few people would be able to sit through for a meal let alone an hour or two of work. Second visit: Had a drink in the Shanghai room and sang karaoke. Everything was fine there and staff was friendly. We ended the evening by going over to the diner side for some food. We were seated and once ready to order I ordered off the happy hour menu (which was also in the Shanghai room where I first saw it) the waiter said "No. That's the wrong menu" I looked around and said "Every table in this diner has this menu on it and I'm within the happy hour time frame listed here and showed him" he said "no that's wrong" then proceeded to rip the menu up in my face, opened the regular menu and pointed at the happy hour in there and said "this is the happy hour, you're not within that timeframe" Everyone at the table was in a bit of shock including me. We were tired, hungry and really just wanted to eat and go home and this escalated so quickly for no reason. After the meal he brought my check and said "oh and I honored your happy hour pricing because I'm a nice guy" and walked off. Why come here? My friends and I have no desire to come back and they enticed me in saying how fun and great the place was. Horrible for any type of work as the music is awful. Horrible for an evening meal as the staff is rude and the menus laid out are "wrong" and the place is in need of repairs. No idea what the hype was about but there's WAY better 24 hour diners and this is by far the worst I've been to in Seattle. read more

Best breakfast food selections from Betelgeuse fried rice, shrimp & grits to the pancakes which are fluffy yumminess. If you like karaoke they have that in next room :) they serve the same breakfast foods while you get ready to sing. Lots of fun. I've been driving past this place for years and decided to give it a try. My husband and I came for Saturday breakfast. We were seated right away and the staff was friendly. The coffee was definitely diner coffee. I ordered the make your own burrito, and it was tasty. My husband had the Little Dipper and we split a pancake. Overall we enjoyed our meal. I don't have enough good things to say about this place. I have been to the North Star Diner for food 3 times and the Shanghai Room many more. I love that it feels comfortable, laid back, not pretentious and the staff are great. The owners are seriously lovely people and you can really feel that permeate through the whole operation. What I love about the place: North Star Diner: - Open 24 hours!!! - The build your own breakfast burrito is so damn good. I am a connoisseur of breakfast burritos and this is my very favorite. It's huge, filled with fresh ingredients, not oily at all and packed with flavor. - The P.A.T. Benedict, the house made pesto hollandaise is soooo good - The pastries: I have eaten the savory pastry (my fav), a cinnamon roll and chocolate cookie, all delicious. - I have had nothing but really great service here and reasonable wait times. The Shanghai Room: - Atmosphere: simply everything I love about a good dive bar, very low lights, vinyl comfy seats, a huge bar and people from all walks of life. - Karaoke every night! This place gets better every time I visit! I've been stopping in about once a month since they opened, which I'm glad I have! This past weekend I had the PAT Benedict which was fantastic. I'm super "picky" about having properly cooked eggs and they've got it on point here. The vibes were really nice on Saturday- some families, some couples, some solo diners, etc. there's seemed to be a new manager (?) (or possibly host) who was super cheery, greeting everyone as they came and left, and even helping one lady with her sweater before leaving. Keep that guy around! Today, a weekday morning, I stopped in just for some coffee and studying. Perfect spot for it. So happy to have a great diner up here in Greenwood! North Star Diner is truly a gem. I've been coming with my wife and 4-year-old pretty regularly since they opened and it has fast become one of our favorite neighborhood spots. They nail the diner experience with the slightly quirky and comfortable environment, extremely friendly and welcoming employees, huge portions (at least for their lunch options), and quality food that far surpasses what is commonly understood as "diner" food (doesn't feel overly salty or greasy). The fries are some of the best in Seattle and the sandwiches (I can attest to the club, reuben, and the torta) are delicious. Also thoroughly enjoyed the scramble with their mouth-watering House-braised pork shoulder and the pancakes (my son's favorite). Oh-- I can't believe that I haven't mentioned their baked goods and milkshakes yet! Always an enticing selection that puts the "yum" in yummy! I also really appreciate the eclectic mix of music, anything from classic Seattle sounds to outlaw country live albums. Like listening to albums at your friend's house. I am amazed that people complain about the food here. Not sure what they ate... one lady when I was there complained about the food on the bar happy hour menu. I haven't tried it. Everything that we've tried has impressed. Two things to note: The service is a bit slower than your typical brewpub. That doesn't bother me at all, as I usually head to a diner to relax and am grateful to leave frantic modern life at the door. With that said, it really isn't ridiculously slow by any means... and I'm sure that if you ask one of the friendly staff for your check, they'll bring it to you. The price isn't small town greasy-spoon prices. They serve quality food and the price is consistent with any other Seattle brewpub. This place is what it is and I love it. It's a 24 hour diner and dive bar with regular karaoke, decent food, and friendly bartenders who remember your name. The drinks are good, the cocktails are both interesting and tasty, and the homemade sodas/shrubs are inventive! The happy hour is SOLID here for well drinks, and it being all-day Monday makes it a fun place to stop off after work for a quick drink and some emo music/90s movies on the projector. (Preferred Monday happy hour route is food at Gainsbourg, then walk half a block for drinks at Shanghai.) Karaoke here is usually a great time and the bartenders join in sometimes too, which is always fun. Do keep in mind that when karaoke isn't going on, the music is generally very loud. If you want to have a conversation, you're better off sitting away from the speakers. Chances are you'll at least moderately enjoy the food you get here. You might even love it! It really depends on your taste, but the menu is so large that it accommodates for that. The early bird specials for breakfast are perfect for a small wake-up meal. The appetizers are decent but I don't think they're as good as the rest of the menu. The portions are really large, especially the breakfast and sandwiches. I haven't tried the dinner entrees that I know of, but it's very possible that I've drunkenly chowed down on something and don't remember (Which I've definitely done with the chicken strips. The best of the best. Loved this hole in the wall. We went here on the night of the Anthony Bourdain special that featured it; packed house. Even with all the cheering and chaos, the wait-staff was friendly, quick, and hilarious. The menu is eclectic and large. Whatever you're craving is on there, somewhere. I love the diversity, especially since I'm not a fan of breakfast foods in general, but my husband is. This place allows both of us to order things and for everyone to leave happy and satisfied. He got french toast sticks, I got pulled pork nachos, and we shared the grilled cheese and tomato soup. Way too much food. French toast sticks were amazing, almost made me a breakfast food person. The nachos were ginormous and fantastic. Cilantro crema, some sort of spicy sauce (probably siracha-based), and LAYERED cheese throughout the pile sold me. The tomato soup was incredible as well. The only bummer was the grilled cheese. It was hardly toasted, and the sad, un-melty american cheese didn't save the day. We're unsure if this was just a consequence of a rushed kitchen, or if this was the intention.. but there are plenty of other interesting things on the menu that did deliver, so we're not concerned. Drinks were balanced, strong, cheap, and good. What more could you possibly want. Happy hour deals everywhere. I got Tommy's Marg and my husband got the oaxaca old fashioned. We loved both. There's a rowdy, good-sized bar on the other side of the diner, and free parking in the back (remember your license plate for validation). A lot better than the Chinese spot that was previously here. My husband and I were immediately greeted and the server that helped us was really nice. The intergalactic motif makes the space more esthetically pleasing. The food is pretty good on top of that. My husband had the Corn Beef Benedict and he said it was very tasty. Food was good!! I had the double burger and fries, added bacon, and it was the bomb!! I couldn't finish it, it was so big and I was starving!!! We ate in the Shanghai room so we could get a little karaoke in, KJ Sterling had an angelic voice, sounded like he should be in Broadway musicals, not a karaoke bar! The bartender was the sweetest thing, I didn't ask her name but she was attentive to our needs and her drinks were on point! Not open 24/7. That's like the only reason to go here. It's hella far and it looks like a trash version of Lost Lake. Just go there.

First off, the servers are all really quirky but it helps make the place feel a lot more personal. Definitely not a stuck-up too fancy to survive place. The servers like to sit down near you to get your orders and whatnot and I have to say I love the casualness. The food is honestly brilliant, I've yet to have something I didnt love. This place is ok. I've come here many times I've the years. Their breakfast is good. The last time I went to the Shanghai Room I got confused with their prices. They don't have physical menus, they specifically brought me a QR code to look at the menu. We ordered a soup of the day ($5.50 on the menu) and were charged $9.50 for the soup. I asked the bartender and he said it was just how the register worked but that he would adjust it for us. I didn't realize until after I left that he charged us $5.99 for the soup. No big deal; but it seems like the menu should reflect the correct prices. Also, we ordered some of their House Cocktails that were listed as $9 on the menu but we were charged $10 for each one; and one person ordered a Mai Tai and was charged over $12 for a Martini. Again, I understand that many institutions are raising prices, which makes sense, but the menu should reflect what the actual prices are and when you look at your receipt you should be able to tell what you were charged for. Poor customer service: food was great. New Year's Day, understandably a busy day for brunch spots. Having worked in customer service/restaurants I'm always hesitant to leave negative reviews about service industry folks and restaurants but this was quite inconsiderate and uncaring service. We sat at the bar in Shanghai room, waited forever to get menus, again fine- long line at door and it's a big place. No water, when everyone around us (including at bar) has iced water glasses and a large bottle water to pour themselves when refills were needed. I asked for water glasses and we did not get a refill bottle, nor were our glasses refilled for the entirety of the meal. We ordered three plates for two people- one to share. Food finally came out like 45 mins after we ordered. Again, they are packed I get the wait so that's understandable. The bartender handed us two plates and said "enjoy." I asked where the third was, since he didn't care to let us know it was on the way, I thought he had (in the rush of taking our order) maybe only put in the two plates, so I asked where the third was as a reminder in case he needed to quickly ring it in-knowing it was a quick grill item and wouldn't take too long to make he could fake us out if he did forget and get away with it. He said it's coming. We finished our meals, waited, waited. No one said anything. We asked about the third dish and bartender said he'd go check on it. When he returned - no apology, no consideration, no customer service... just "I don't envy the kitchen folks today. Somehow the plate was lost but should be right out." 3 mins later it came out. Still no water refills. We finished the third plate, sat waiting. I set my card down to signal he could charge me so we could leave. Finally my partner held the card up and said "can you check us out please?" I anticipated something being comped on our bill or an apology or Anything but nothing. All food and beverages on the bill. I'd understand if they were running around like crazy but they were chatting one another up at the bar. Food was delightful and delicious! Always is. read more

I've been here twice now, once around 8:00PM and once at 10:00AM, both on Saturdays. Each visit was great. I ordered breakfast both times and was very pleased by what came. The hash-browns are well seasoned and crunchy and the French Toast might be the best I've had in as long as I can remember. I got scrambled eggs on both visits and, while they too were tasty, I have to remember to ask that they cook them a minute or so longer. Personal preference, I enjoyed them as they were. On the most recent visit, I came with a group of five people and we decided that this would be our new usual spot for our occasional breakfast get-together. read more

And classic 50's bar vibe - pinball machines (not loud), photo booth, and classic red leatherette booths and chairs. Bartender knew everything about the drink list -the beer/shot parings are brilliant. Same menu as North Star - so you can have breakfast all day here too! We went for appetizers and loved the pickled vegetables. We didn't stay until 9p but rumor has it they have a great karaoke crowd too - so we'll be back! read more

Average food and service on my first trip here. We were going to eat in the Shanghai room but the deafening sound of karaoke deterred us. We opted for the much quieter dining room. Thought the wings looked good from pics I saw. They weren't too great. Not bad either but you can do better at a lot of local bars I could think of. The skin on the wings was not crispy. They probably needed to be fried longer....nothing worse than rubbery chicken skin. The sauce was good but pretty scarce. I'd skip these if I went again. We also got the crabby bacon melt. Usually anything with crab is a hit with me. Not so much with this sandwich. I think if you make a crab melt you should basically make a crab dip and then put that on grilled bread. This was basically a bacon grilled cheese with crab meet added to it. It seemed dry and the bacon overwhelmed the delicate taste of the crab. The cheddar and Swiss they use are hard cheeses to keep in "melty" form for very long and become solidified if not eaten immediately. And given that the service here is lacking and our food likely sat in the kitchen window for awhile our cheese was pretty solidified by the time we got it. The servers are hipsters who seem like they'd rather be anywhere but trying to earn money by serving you. The best part of this experience were the French fries. They're a mix between steak fries and regular fries and were quite good. All in all not a terrible experience but nothing to write home about. The only plus is it's 24 hours. read more

Service: 1/10 Food: 5/10 Cleanliness: 10/10 I have to start off by saying that I was highly dissatisfied in the service, we kept getting ignored and walked by when the restaurant wasn't even busy, it took about 10 minutes for anyone to come and take our order and an extra 30 minutes for the food to actually get to us. We were just about to leave money for the soda and walk out when the waiter came to the table with the food. As far as refilling our water cups and soda? It took my boyfriend 3 cups slams onto the edge of the table for them to even notice, he kept trying to get the waiters attention before that but he would completely ignore us. Food? It was ok at best, my boyfriends burger was undercooked and my fish patty was over cooked. The only thing good was the fries. So when this place first started out i was unsure of if i would become a returning customer - it occupies the space of a former dingy chinese restaurant, and i was skeptical. But over time it has really grown on me and i now think of it as my go-to 24-hour diner of choice in the whole city! On March 8 my wife and i went to North Star for a late night dinner after a LONG day of running our own business. It was well into the 11pm hour, and we just needed to sit down and have some food. When we eventually got the bill there was a discount applied that we had not asked for/known about - they gave us a "march 8 pay equity day" discount since we are women, and women still earn too much less than men do - what a lovely surprise! (They had no signage about it, it wasn't advertised, it wast just a very nice gesture.) Last week I went for Sunday brunch with a friend and it was busier than i have ever seen it! Despite the fact that it took awhile to get seated the staff was quick to let us know the situation and give us an estimate of wait time. Two not-so good points (but not detracting from my 5 stars obvs!): 1 - I do think that some of the prices are a bit high for a diner (yes, the food is good, but it's not THAT good!) but when you have limited options of places to go to (i.e. late at night) this is a solid option. 2 - the music is often on a few notches too loud for my tastes (granted this is usually when the heaviest/darkest music that i am NOT a fan of to begin with) which can make conversations hard to have. read more

Fun atmosphere, kid friendly (we arrived around 4:30 PM with three kids) and good service. My Halloween-obsessed 5 yo asked if they had skeleton pancakes, and our server said they didn't, so my son chose fish & chips. Then as we were eating our server brought out a skull pancake for my son - the cook thought it was a cool idea and wanted to try to make it. North Star made his day!
