Maybe all the good reviews were written by friends and relatives because our "dining" experience was not good. Aside from s lone man drinking coffee no one was in the cafe. Since we read so many good reviews we thought we'd give them a shot. Nobody greeted us, we sat for at least 5 minutes until the server noticed us. The manager was having staff interactions with different employees while seated two tables away. Had to wait at least 15 minutes for a hamburger, BLT and fries. Server was asked by the manager to make him a coffee drink. She had to make it over because she forgot about it! The food was terrible. BLT had good bacon but way too much house made aioli, slimy lettuce and stem end of the tomato. Hamburger had slimy onions and the same slimy lettuce, fair meat and bun. Will we return? In a word! The most important word regarding this restaurant is....patience. None of the waitstaff is in a hurry or quick with anything. They weren't quick to: Seat our party of 7 Take our order Deliver silverware and napkins Refill coffee and water Serve the food Check on us to make sure we didn't need anything Deliver the bill The food, when delivered 55 minutes after ordering, was hot and delicious. The breakfast burritos were large and full of ingredients. The club sandwich and side salad were huge. The french toast was sweet and fluffy. $1 coffee was great but not enough of a gimmick to make up for the long wait for food. I would sort of understand the long wait if the place was super busy, but for most of our visit, the restaurant was half empty and everyone was looking at each other thinking the same thing about the slow service and lack of hustle. So, if you don't have patience, go to another place for breakfast or lunch. If you are willing to spend over 2 hours at the diner, dig in and enjoy. read more

I have been in for breakfast once, the food was good, but the place just came off as dirty all around. Service was fine, but nothing wonderful. Went for karaoke night with a group more recently, the place had a very clear bathroom smell as soon as we walked in. The bench seat kept rocking off its foundation. I'm a huge diner fan so I was really hoping to be amazed--or at least marginally impressed. After three months of operation (I asked the staff), I expected better. The waiter was friendly and helpful and answered my questions. And I'm willing to cut the place some slack... it's not easy to run a 24-hour operation with an attached lounge. I can't comment on the service (as other reviewers have) since it was a slow time just after lunch and the service seemed fine. I ordered the Taurus scramble. House-braised pork with salsa verde, roasted chiles, oaxaca cheese, black beans and cilantro creme fraiche. I expected some real heat in this dish. I found none. The scramble arrived lukewarm. The hash-browns were standard commissary-style but did arrive hot. . For $11.99, it needs to be more impressive and MUCH larger. The scramble was about half the size it should have been for that price. And c'mon, only one slice of toast? Bread is cheap. Give the customers two pieces. The jam (provided on the side) was quite tasty though. I tried the key-lime pie for dessert. It was excellent and obviously the real deal. Four stars for that. But that did not make up for what I thought was a very skimpy meal for the price paid. Some of the other customers had sandwiches that looked fairly large and tasty. I hope that was the case. Not sure if I will be back. The food was only marginally better than _Patty's Egg Nest_ but with _Skillet Diner_ prices. The decor was fine though the place could get very noisy when crowded. This is not unique to the North Star Diner though--acoustic treatment is something that nearly ALL Seattle restaurants could use. It's getting tough to find a good inexpensive breakfast place in Seattle. The _Original Pancake House_ is a huge rip-off, and even the weekday specials are really marginal there. I'm giving North Star Diner two stars for trying. _Patty's Egg Nest_ is only acceptable since they offer punch cards. For basic cheap eats, I'd recommend Ballard Mandarin which offers the best dollar/food value around. But it's not a diner. And no diner in Seattle is anything like a real diner to be found in New York or New Jersey! read more

I came here for my birthday party last night and was blown away at how friendly and accommodating the entire staff was. I especially want to thank the bartender Jimmy for being so friendly to our group the entire night, letting us push a bunch of tables together, checking in on us and making me feel so special for my birthday! The karaoke DJ was amazing as well, I think his name was KJ something, but he was so encouraging to all of the singers and was hilarious and nice. North Star, I love you. Top 5 Reasons why North Star kills it: 1. Friendly Staff Maybe because they are all cuties, or maybe it's because they learned my name quickly, but everyone at North Star is really friendly. Shout out to Jess for being the first friendly person to me in the neighborhood! 2. Karaoke 5 nights a week. I know, Karaoke. Did you know that in The Philippines singing, "My Way" can get you "my -STABBED-?" It's true. While I've never seen that happen at NS, singing "Don't Stop Believing" will set you back a cool $20 in an otherwise free Karaoke Bar (no, really). Basically, it's fun as shit, especially if you like listening to people sing Rocky Horror. 3. Sunday's feature a Hangover Brunch: all the usual suspects, especially: Challah bread French toast sticks, unlimited coffee, in a dark, dark, ... dark room. 4. North Star is a great alternative to Beth's Cafe for all night food. Problem is, it's ridiculously expensive for what you get. For example, I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with fries ($11.49). The sandwich came on a little, un-toasted hamburger bun, similar to the bun of a Dick's burger. Unfortunately, the sandwich was also very soggy and small. More slaw may have helped by adding extra crunch to the sandwich. The flavor of the pork and the fries were good... I think The North Star should invest in some higher quality ingredients like a bigger, better quality bun or cut prices a few bucks to make up for it. read more

As a Greenwood local, I had high hopes when I found out a 24-hour diner was coming to the neighborhood. Now, I am a regular at both North Star & Shanghai room. For comparison, the food is a little pricier and higher quality than Beth's Cafe. The staff are also attentive and friendly, service has always been top-notch and drinks stiff like they should be. Whether it's for drunk food at 3am, or for lunch in the daytime, this place has been consistent in good eats, drinks and service, and it's awesome for groups. The karaoke is fun too. Went here for brunch, since it's new in the neighborhood. Very quiet on a Wednesday late morning, which is to be expected. Server was prompt and courteous. Ordered the PAT, which is a Benedict style dish with tomatoes avocado, and a pesto hollandaise sauce. Really good! My husband ordered the Cassiopeia scramble, which he really liked. Thick hearty wheat bread, and perfectly golden hash-browns. We didn't have anything to drink. The decor is eclectic and there are a lot of vegetarian options. We had the most lovely time at the North Star Diner the other night. As it turns out, it's the best place in town to watch the Greenwood Parade. My son and I sat in a booth with a lovely view while we had a tasty meal of breakfast for dinner. It's brand spanking new, so I was especially impressed with our level of service. It's like the haunts of your youth, but with cleaner bathrooms and better food. It's someplace where you can slouch in at 5 am and the guy behind the counter, cheerful because it's close to the end of his shift, will pour you a cup of coffee and then go back to mopping the floor and listening to that music that the kids like these days that's all echoey guitars and drums that sound like a 45 put on at 33 & 1/2. It's a place where they make their own tasty green chili and will pour it on anything you order for two bucks. It's a place where the Omelettes are good and the hash browns are better. It's a place where, if it was a few hours later, you could go right next door and get a drink without even stepping outside. read more

I was so excited when this place opened. What could be better than a 24 hour diner near my house!? However when I went there I was severely disappointed. The staff was friendly but the food was no better than a Denny's and cost a shocking amount for its quality. I'm not a very picky person but if you have to pass around a hot chocolate so that everyone can see if they think its actually contains any chocolate than that is a poorly done drink.
