This is the perfect little neighborhood Italian restaurant -- the red vinyl tablecloth kind, with pizza, lasagna, subs, ziti. The waitresses are nice and helpful. The food comes quickly and is good. Waitress was super nice. Greeted us with a smile. During our time she was attentive. We ordered right away, and the food came out quick. 3 of us ordered salads and 1 ordered meatballs. What an amazing find. An elderly friend wanted to go out "somewhere new " for dinner last week so, I searched for an Italian place,since that's what I was in the mood for that day. As soon as I walked in the front door and that deliciously wonderful scent of Italian cooking hit my nose, I knew I'd picked the right place! It's great little place with a very nice menu selection (they have lunch and dinner menus). Check out their daily specials, too. My friend had one, which believe was oysters. She loved it!They have wonderful staff all around, chef, cooks and wait staff. The food was just outstanding as was the service. I had the meat sauce lasagna which I rate 8/10. For appetizers, we got the garlic bread and mozzarella sticks, which both very tasty and cooked perfectly. The prices were very reasonable as well. The wait for our food was quite reasonable. There is relatively ample on-street parking, and lots of parking lot spaces behind the building that services all the stores along Massachusetts Avenue. I definitely have to come back soon. Layers of pasta were perfectly cooked--not too soft, not too firm--and the meatball sauce was rich, hearty, and packed with flavor. You could really tell the meatballs were house-made; they had that slightly coarse texture, seasoned just right with herbs and garlic. Every bite had that warm, home-cooked feel. To go with it, I had their garlic bread, which I swear could be a meal on its own. Golden, buttery, crisp on the edges but soft in the middle, and loaded with just the right amount of garlic. It paired perfectly with the lasagna--ideal for mopping up every last bit of sauce. If you're craving something Italian that feels indulgent but thoughtfully made, this place hits the spot. They have the best eggplant parm I have ever had. Also spaghetti and meatballs is excellent. It is pretty loud so if hard of hearing might be a problem. To use the bathroom you have to go down a flight of stairs so not handicapped accessible. You can come in from the front of the restaurant with no stairs which is great but parking is in the back and there are 4 or 5 stairs up to the dining room. Great food but not accessible for some. However, the pizza is below acceptable standards( I am from Chicago so my standards are high). I've been going to Mario's for probably 20 years and for standard, economical Italian fare it can't be beat. No reservations taken; in Lexington you go to the sign-in book, put down your name and the # in your party, and wait to be called. Long time customers know the best times to go to get seated right away; be prepared to wait most weekends at dinner time. I've sampled several things on the menu and my go-tos are either chicken parm with meat sauce (you can get everything marinara if you prefer) served with shells (you can choose spaghetti if you prefer) or pizza (best sauce ever) loaded with sausage, extra cheese, onions and black olives. All the portions are plentiful (I always take half home for leftovers) and always tasty. I've had the lasagna, which is huge but lacking in enough sauce for me (I'd order extra sauce if I were to get it again) and the ravioli which I have no complaints about. Bread is served to the table in the form of fresh rolls. I often get a side salad for dinner and did so last night. It's usually fresh and tasty but for some reason at 5pm the salad I served was limp and tasteless. Maybe left over from another day? The service is impeccable. The waitstaff take orders, deliver to tables, keep track of who's waiting to be seated and deliver them to a table when one becomes available. Orders are taken quickly, food is delivered hot. Fun fact: often during the summer students on vacation are working there, which makes for fun small talk. As you can imagine Mario's appeals to everyone; families, couples, singles, so don't expect a quiet, romantic ambiance where you can have a leisurely meal and a private discussion. When full the place is very lively. There is a large metered parking lot (2 hr max) directly behind the restaurant and a larger one behind that if you want to, say, also go to the Lexington Venue (movie theater) or visit the many shops in Lexington Center. read more

I love Mario's for the meatball sub. It's probably the best meatball sub I ever ate and certainly the best one I eat on a regular basis. Get it with meat sauce and provolone cheese. I like it with a Mediterranean salad and a glass of Chianti. The service is casual but friendly. The style is old school with checked tablecloths and dark wood. We stopped by here for dinner, since my daughter was craving pasta, and the quick service and nice atmosphere definitely didn't disappoint. The portions are absolutely HUGE and will leave you stuffed, and the prices are relatively cheap. The quality of each dish is also good. We ordered the baked ziti, spaghetti and meatballs, spaghetti and meat sauce, and one pizza, thinking that one dish for each person would be enough. I definitely recommend sharing dishes though because of how much food they give you. We also ordered a strawberry lemonade. I was a bit split about this place Cuz the pizza was just ok. It didn't taste special. The crust was too dense for me. And it didn't have a crunch until you got till the very end of the crust. The lasagna was actually pretty good, Italian sausage was mild and not too strong. But the chicken parm was amazing! Like... who cares about anything else!!! This place is soooo good! I don't go often enough as I live in Lunenburg and it's a bit of a drive. I have purchased platters for Christmas dinners here and there for over 30 years and ALWAYS get compliments! They never disappoint. When I go in for a sit down meal I usually get their baked ziti as that meal is in a class of it's own, it's absolutely delectable. The waitstaff is always so friendly and attentive, they truly make you feel like family. They are usually very busy during peak hours so your best bet is to go early but this place is a gem and is definitely a must try if you've never been. Been going here since we moved to New England in 2019 and been ok but today we had absolute rude and horrible service today July 2 2025.. Was a larger blond who usually we do see there but typically we had another waitress when we went before. She didn't once check on us but was fine checking other tables. Just complete attitude with us form the start for no reason. I always say thank you with a smile and we're a pretty quiet/shy family. We're a very friendly family to everyone. Came to celebrate my birthday with a lunch at Mario's, only to be left uncomfortable.. I don't know what the issue was but I do suspect some racism(were a caucasian/asian interaccialfamily) or just that she's horrible in general but we did see her check others. We tired to stop her a handful of times so we could order bread. Finally got her and she actually tossed it down at as with no words. Completely unacceptable behavior. Over all vibe with her left me leaving with tears because of how we were treated. Never stepping foot in here again! How could you be so freaking horrible to someone for no reason???? We're human too you know and very friendly ones! not even a thank you or have a nice day.. nothing. I just feel like we were treated worse than animals today. Maybe im sensitive but regardless, how we were treated is absolutely never ok!!! couldn't even grab a half a refill at least on our drinks. she didn't even want to give to go boxes or a check without an attitude. I travel often and tonight I decided on Mario's at 1733 Massachusetts Ave Lexington, MA I am an Italian food snob because my grandmother and mother showed me what good Italian food is. I ordered chicken parm which I usually do. It came with shells and a meat sauce. I also ordered 2 meatballs. Let's start there. They were a decent size and meaty. Sort of dense but very "production like". But I'd give them a thumbs up. The chicken parmigiana came in one of those sauté boat dishes. I don't like that because it's just swimming in too much sauce. Chicken parm should be in a plate with the side pasta also on the plate. The chicken was a generic processed patty. Decent size (it had that tight breading you get at Costco type patty) it was swimming in sauce and mozzarella and the side pasta (shells) was under sauced. So I mixed them together. The sauce was interesting. A decent meat sauce with plenty of chopped meat but not much meat flavor it tasted kind of sweet (do they add sugar) but it wasnt bad. (Not north end quality) but more pizza place style. I've had a lot worse so it was not bad. The kicker is the meal is only $12.99 meatballs were 3.99 so Mario's is a great value! The Decor is pizza parlor style. And the waitresses were very friendly although I do find often when you done alone, you tend to get ignored after you are served but that was ok So for a good value midweek treat, Mario's in Lexington MA. She was welcoming and gave us good recommendations. We ordered a chicken parmigiana with spaghetti and an eggplant parmigiana with shells both with tomato meat sauce because we were told it would be sweeter and not spicy. We found this place 3 years ago on the way to drop our son off at school in ME. This time around we're here because our daughter goes to school in MA. Perfect for my family and me. A little iffy when we walk in and there's a sign that says we have to add our name to a sheet, but we aren't waiting very long before we are seated. We get a small round table for four and start off with the garlic bread and Buffalo tenders. Both were fantastic. Not humongous portions, but that's okay because it's super cheap and we weren't looking to gorge ourselves anyway. My wife gets eggplant parm, and I get chicken parm. She raves over hers and mine is terrific. Again, not huge, but probably the best chicken quality I've ever had. I noticed this when I bit into the tenders, too. My parm came in an oven dish, and had lots of cheese. Both the entrees came with separate pasta and sauce. Best value for Italian I've had in forever. Felt like definitely pre-COVID inflation pricing. My only regret is not taking any pictures! We will definitely be going back soon! read more
