Second visit to try different stuff and ended up ordering the scallion pancakes, fatty beef, bok choy and spicy fish. The scallion pancakes are like the beef rolls without the beef...crunchy and a really good appetizer. The fatty beef is good too and paired with a bowl of white rice is a meal. The spicy fish was the least favourite of the dishes. Some people will like it, but it's not for everyone. I'm glad service is still there with the wait staff being super kind. Really enjoyed our meal at Northern Cafe! We ordered a bunch of dishes to share and everything we tried was delicious. The spicy wontons were flavorful with a nice kick, and both of the crispy fried dishes came out hot, crunchy, and well seasoned. The beef roll was another favorite--the outside was crispy and flaky with plenty of beef and green onion inside. We also got the noodles, which were rich and savory, and the bok choy was fresh, garlicky, and a great balance to all the heavier dishes. Portions were generous and everything came out tasting fresh. Here's what we ordered: *Cumin Lamb Really good and nicely seasoned. One of the better dishes we ordered. *Sautéed Bok Choy with Garlic Simple but good. Plenty of garlic flavor and went really well with the other dishes. *Sichuan Boiled Fish The flavor was good, but I wish they gave us more fish. The beef rolls were good, the beef noodle soup was just ok and the eggplant with garlic sauce was literally swimming in sauce. This is a cute restaurant and I'd like to try other things... but after spending $48 on three items, I realized I should get a small rice to go also. It was $2.16. Since Rubios is gone, my husband & I decided to check out this new Chinese restaurant that took its place. We ordered crab dumplings, kung pao chicken, and garlic pork riblets. The food was very flavorful. The kung pao spicy compared to what we're used to. But it appears their dishes are geared more to be Szechuan. Service was very good. My only feedback was seeing a pet dog on a customer's lap while dining inside the restaurant. This was not a service animal. This was my first time at Northern Cafe since it had opened! We also got the Xiao Long Bao (Pork Soup Dumplings) as well and is not pictured. I would say my favorite had to be the beef rolls. the food here is incredibly comforting and soooo flavorful!!! I've been craving mapo tofu but never really had it at restaurants before, but it's way better than what I make at home. I love that the tofu is soft and melts in your mouth while accompanied by the numbing sensation of the Szechuan spice. I personally love spicy food a lot, so I think even more spice would be perfect but at its current level I believe everyone trying it would love it as well. The eggplant was savory and with a side of chili oil and rice, it was absolutely divine. If you spend 30+, you also get a free plate of cucumber that was a great refreshing addition and complemented our meal very well. First time at this location; however, not first time at a Northern Cafe. Overall, I was very impressed with this location. All the food we ordered was great. We ordered: beef roll, eggplant in garlic sauce, fried noodles with chicken, xiao long bao, and spicy pork wontons. The beef roll was very good, one of the best I've had in recent memory. Both the eggplant and noodle dish were great and had a nice flavor to them. They came out piping hot, so know they were being prepared fresh in the back. The xiao long bao was also great. The wrapping was a little thick and the dumplings were quite large, but the filling was good and they held together. The spicy wontons were also quite large and had a nice flavor to them too. Service was nice as well, with the food coming out very quickly and the waiting staff being very attentive. Pricing was also pretty good for today's day and age, and you got a large portion for all the dishes. Parking is very easy with a big parking lot. Really like there is a northern cafe in HB so I don't have to go to the one in Irvine. Plenty of parking at the Marshall lot and can drive in behind the lot to avoid making a U-turn on beach blvd. We had been next door at Smoking Tiger earlier in the morning. We returned to take out for lunch. We had to order the Chinese Pork Pancake because daughter did not get to have one when we ordered from Irvine UTC location and brought it to an end of year party. All the other teachers and students had finished them. We also ordered juicy pork dumplings, boiled fish dumplings, eggplant with garlic sauce, scallion pancake, scallion oil noodles, and steamed mango buns. We were offered water while we waited, but we didn't need any having just finished a drink before entering. While we waited, I observed the diners. There was a Dad with a toddler, 2 young ladies getting together for lunch, 2 women with a baby requiring a high chair, 2 lone diners, and a group of 3 young adults. There were also repeat customers. An older gentleman walked in with his glass food container and his companion. The lady who had taken our order brought an appetizer to a table of elders for them to try. There was a male customer who also was waiting for his takeout order. He needed to wait an additional 5 minutes for his order to be ready. When we got home, my daughter realized that even though we had confirmed our order of a scallion oil noodles we received instead noodles with hot oil. It wasn't a big deal. The noodles in hot oil were spicy and she could handle it. The Chinese pork pancake was multiple layers of pancake and ground pork. Unfortunately, other daughter could not have the mango buns upon detecting coconut as an ingredient. My husband commented that there was not much broth in the juicy pork dumplings. We were freqent visitors to the 3 northern cafe restaurants in Westwood before they closed and now we have an option closer to home. We were able to try several dishes and overall the flavors suited me. The pork ear in chili oil had a slightly thicker cut which made for a nice chew. The Sauteed bok choy with garlic was well seasoned and we all enjoyed it. The Chongquing crispy chicken was solid but I especially liked the boiled fish in spicy sauce. Had to stop by here as we were hungry and saw it driving off Beach Blvd. There's a Northern Cafe in L.A. that is delish, and we recently went to the one in Irvine which was good. We ordered the dumplings of course, pork Xiao Long Bao, cucumber salad, Dan Dan noodles, and Mapo tofu. The cucumber salad came out first and it was good. I've had tastier. The Dan Dan came next and it was good. I immediately tasted peanut sauce, which I love. The meat was tasty. It's kinda hard to scoop so see if they can provide you cooking scissors. We just used the spoon to break it off. The Mapo tofu was good, but it left a numbing sensation in our mouths. We found out that's the Sichuan peppercorns which are meant to do that. Who knew?! I wasn't a fan of this dish, not because of the numbing, but because it left a weird aftertaste. The dumplings were good, especially with vinegar. Make sure you ask for a spoon to eat the dumplings in. The staff were very, VERY attentive. A bit too much. They were trying to grab our dishes/plates when we still had food on it. And it wasn't busy, so no one was waiting for a table. I do like that they kept refilling our water jug. And brought us napkins even when I didn't ask, but I did want. Been driving by here several times, seeing a "Coming Soon" banner each time, hoping they'd be open already. And today I was not disappointed - they finally opened! This is the third location I've been to, and the food seems pretty consistent. Granted, I've only tried their hot pot and some other cold dishes, both are delicious. So today I swung in to pick up some Wontons in Spicy Chili Sauce to go. It was pretty yummy, has thick pork filling, but the sauce was a bit salty. This location recently opened so they're doing a BOGO free xlb pork dumpling until 6/16/2026. There's a handful of tables. There were seats available, but it took a while for us to get seated as well as getting our initial order in. Aside from the initial delay in service, they were super attentive and friendly throughout the meal. I ordered the xlb, cucumber salad, spicy wonton, and Dan Dan noodles. Their xlb was delicious and had great flavor but sadly more than half of the dumplings ripped so the soup spilled out. The cucumber salad was crunchy and refreshing. Came on a Thursday 5/21/26 around Noon for lunch with my parents for the BOGO juicy pork dumpling. We took advantage of the lunch special which included soda, hot n sour soup and a bowl of rice. Kung Pao Chicken- Super flavorful and delicious, kind of salty if you eat it by itself, but it's really good if you eat it with the white rice. Came here on the second day of opening around 530 as a party of 5. Got seated on the last table without wait. They had buy one get one free xiaolongbao so we got that. It was pretty decent. The main dish we come to northern every time is for the golden soup beef noodle. I think the one at the irvine location is the best since it has a different tang to it than the Cerritos location and this one hasn't quite hit but it scratches the itch. The other ones taste pretty close to the other Cerritos location. The big plate chicken noodles are always good. I love thick noodles so those were perfect. The only note was that the quality of meat in the stir fried rice cakes was quite varied as some pieces were good and some still had a stringy tendon piece or something in it. Besides that I'm glad theres a northern closer to me now and I hope that more people come to try their golden soup beef noodles which are my absolute favorite! read more

Been waiting for this place to open! The place is clean and food was really good. We got the zha jiang noodles, beef roll, cucumber salad and green beans. Cucumber salad was perfect for this hot weather and the beef roll is probably the best I've had in this area. First time trying the Zha Jiang noodles and actually prefer it over the Dan Dan noodles. Everyone was friendly, but one of the servers forgot our dumpling orders. We didn't say anything because they looked busy and we were honestly already full and still had leftovers, but that's what knocked off a star. I don't eat eggs so they checked which items are made without eggs I ended up getting the cucumber salad and noodle with hot oil The noodles don't contain egg but the dumpling wrappers might (fyi) The cucumber salad was kind of bland. It was really lightly seasoned. I added some vinegar and soy sauce to give it more flavor. I usually really like this especially in a hot day and have had it elsewhere and know what it could have tasted like The noodles were very good though. The sauce its mixed in was pretty delicious. I've tried other Northern Cafe locations before and thought they were fine, but this one really impressed me! We came on a Sunday afternoon and it was a short wait for our party of eight. The service was friendly and efficient. All the food came out quickly too. We had to get the BOGO free xiao long baos, and I really appreciated that they let us know there are peanuts in them since one of our friends is allergic. I thought it was odd to have peanuts in them since I'm not used to that, but it was pretty good and not overpowering. Among the items we ordered, my favorites were the green beans and golden noodle soup. The green beans had a nice char and the noodles in the golden soup were cooked perfectly.
