We were craving something spicy and remembered an amazing spicy Chinese noodle dish we had in the past, so we decided to try a new spot--and wow, it did not disappoint! We ordered the Mapo Tofu, Braised Beef Noodle, Dan Dan Noodles, Crispy Spicy Chicken, and a side of rice. Every single dish was packed with flavor, and the spice level was absolutely on point. Everything complemented each other so well, and every bite was delicious. The portions were bigger than we expected! There were four of us, we ordered four dishes, and we still had leftovers. We definitely underestimated how much food we'd be getting, which made it an even better value. The ambiance was warm and inviting, making it a great place to sit down and enjoy a meal. The service was excellent as well--everyone was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. Even though we were unbelievably stuffed, we couldn't leave without trying dessert. We ordered the brown sugar rice cake, and it was the perfect sweet ending to an incredible meal. It was soft, chewy, and absolutely delicious. The dessert menu looked amazing too--we'll definitely have to come back to try more. Overall, this place is a 10/10. If you love authentic Chinese food with bold flavors and satisfying spice, I highly recommend giving this restaurant a try. PengXiang Sichuan Kitchen gets many of the important things right. The restaurant is clean, modern, and comfortable. The staff is genuinely friendly, the service is excellent, and the portions are generous. The signature crispy spicy chicken is the reason to come. It is crunchy, flavorful, aromatic, and loaded with dried chilies. I only wish they would leave out the French fries. The chicken is good enough to stand on its own, and the fries feel like an unnecessary peace offering to diners who may have wandered into a Sichuan restaurant without realizing what Sichuan food is. Or an attempt to make it seem like the dish is larger than what it really is if you base on chicken. The cucumber salad was excellent: fresh, crisp, garlicky, and exactly what you want alongside the heavier dishes. The Dan Dan noodles were also above average and worth ordering. The wontons in chili oil didn't appeal to me. The sesame sauce dominated the dish and muted the chili oil rather than complementing it. My larger concern is that the restaurant seems almost frightened that its food might actually be spicy. We heard the staff repeatedly ask me and other tables, "I hope it's not too spicy." They were being attentive and considerate, but this is Sichuan food. Heat, fragrance, chili oil, and the numbing character of Sichuan peppercorns are not unfortunate side effects. They are the point. We appeared to be the only Asian diners in the restaurant at the time, and perhaps PengXiang has learned to soften its cooking for a broader Caucasian audience. Walnut Shrimp is on the menu, as another example, I understand the business decision, but it would be a shame for such a capable kitchen to dilute what makes Sichuan cuisine distinctive. Give people fair warning, offer adjustable spice levels when possible, and then let Sichuan food be Sichuan food. There is a lot to like here: great service, a polished dining room, generous portions, modest prices, and a signature chicken dish I would absolutely order again. Just trust the chilies and mala spices a little more, and please let the French fries find another home. read more

I doubt anyone reading this is old enough to remember Wei's, Mandarin, Champion, and other local classics that have come and gone over the decades, but while those were all decent, this place is on another level and is easily the best Chinese restaurant FV/HB has ever had. Besides Sichuan Impression in Tustin, there is no other Sichuan restaurant of comparable quality in OC. Crispy spicy chicken, mapo tofu, and poached fish filet in chilis are all high level, and the Hunan offerings like dry pot cauliflower and sliced pork with chili are solid, too. Even the beef chowfun should make the HK fans happy. I have enjoyed eating my way around Chongqing, Chengdu, Flushing, and the 626 for years, and the food here wouldn't disappoint anyone with similar taste preferences. I always love Sichuan cuisine and just happened to be in area for some errands. Saw the place and I had to come in. We came before lunch hours so tables were readily available. What we ordered: Cucumber salad: I needed this to balance the heavy stirred fried dishes. This one is very refreshing with enough garlic kick. Dried pot cauliflower: Chinese cauliflower with pork in a (dry) hot pot. So good I almost burnt my tongue. You need some steamed rice with this Stirred fried pork with chili: I wanted to order the crispy chicken but I've had my fill of fried food lately so I opted for this one instead. The green chili was not spicy and together with ginger and fermented soy beans enhanced the flavors of the pork. Sichuan ice jelly: love the refreshing jelly with raisins. I don't care for the red beans on top so next time I'll let someone eat them for me. Our server was friendly and helpful. I was running errands during my lunch break and stumbled upon the newly opened PengXiang Sichuan Kitchen in the shopping center. I told myself, "Let's give it a go!" Upon sitting down I was offered water or cold tea so I went for the cold tea since my server said it was no extra charge. I love tea in any format so that was a pleasant surprise. Sichuan Cold Noodle - I opted for one of the more simple dishes, the sesame sauce cold noodles, which I would like to say is fool proof but I have been at other places where they messed it up. PengXiang does it right. They use a thinner noodle, toss it with sesame sauce and crushed peanuts and red chili oil. To top it off, they place on some green onions and cucumber. The sesame sauce had some tanginess to it, which is good. I'm guessing a hint of soy sauce and vinegar to give it a little bit. The sauce was perfectly balanced. I loved the dish overall and would get it again. There's another similar dish on the menu, Dry Noodles with Sesame Sauce. The sauce taste is similar but that's a warm noodle dish and they add some minced pork to it. Cold vs. Warm. Make your choice. Sichuan Ice Jelly - I saw the warm Glutinous Rice Ball Soup on a previous menu and was looking forward to ordering that for dessert, but since it's now Summer, it makes sense that they switched in the ice jelly. If you have ever had the black grass jelly, this is the same consistency as that, except this one is brown and is embraced by brown sugar inside, which make it almost a little mapley in an Asian way. The jelly is made in house and they add some yellow raisins to give it a more fun texture and because it pairs well. If you are looking for a light, refreshing dessert, to chill you out on hot day, this is it. The table next to me had an amazing looking Crispy Spicy Chicken that I will have to try next time with friends. They have a few general/universal Chinese dishes on the menu (Hot and Sour Soup, Walnut Shrimp, Orange Chicken, etc.), but they also have other Sichuan dishes like Dry Pot Squid, Hot Chili Oil Poached Sole Fillet, Kung Pao Chicken, and Dry Pot Cauliflower. There are also some vegan friendly dishes like Cucumber Salad, Shredded Tofu Salad, Eggplant in Garlic Sauce, Wok Fried String Beans, Rice Cake in Brown Sugar. Pengxiang Sichuan Kitchen, Fountain Valley -- worth the drive if you actually like heat. Started with the smashed cucumber salad ($7.99). Crisp, cold, garlicky, with just enough chili to wake you up. It's not filler -- order it, and keep it on the table. The hot and sour soup was the surprise. Deep, layered broth with real black pepper bite and fresh cilantro on top, not the gluey cornstarch version you get everywhere else. Best I've had. I finished the bowl before my entrée landed. The crispy spicy chicken ($23.99) is the reason to come. Bite-size chicken buried in dried chilies, Sichuan peppercorn, sesame, and crisp potato wedges. It stayed crunchy to the last piece -- no sogginess, which almost never happens with this dish. Heat is a 6/10 for me and I eat spicy; if Tapatío is your ceiling, this will hurt. It's a rice killer. Chicken + rice + a cold cucumber between bites is the move. $23.99 feels steep on the menu but the portion is large and easily feeds two alongside a soup and app. Going back for the mapo tofu and the sole in pickled cabbage. read more

Ever since Yummy Noodle closed down, we were wondering what would take the place of that restaurant, and guess what -- a new Chinese restaurant emerged! It's PengXiang! :) We came by for early dinner a couple days ago, and had a good meal. Tried this place for the first time and ordered my favorite dish which is Beef Chowfun. Took it to go and It was excellent! The restaurant looked nice and clean. It's currently soft opening, it's just been 1 week since they launched! We ordered: -Beef chow fun -shu mai -har gow -gelatin dessert The dim sum came with 3 pieces and were huge pieces! This was very yummy. The herbal gelatin was delicious with red bean and not too sweet. Finally, the chow fun - major disappointment. Too oily, all you could see was bean sprouts, skimpy on beef and noodles which is the main part of the dish! Service was so good though, the two ladies took very good care. Restaurant was clean and comfortable! I saw who I think was the owner but was surprised since it's soft opening that he didn't come by the 2 tables with guests to collect any feedback but I did inform the staff. Soup Dumplings didn't have much soup BUT there was more meat/filling than most places do and flavor wise, hit the spot. A friend who lives nearby took me to this newly opened spot. Honestly, I was pretty skeptical at first. But after eating here, I can confidently say it reminded me of what great Sichuan food in LA used to taste like during its golden years. I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but 10-15 years ago felt like the peak of Sichuan cuisine in LA. The best restaurants always had hour-long waits, incredible wok hei, bold flavors, and every dish made you want another bowl of rice. Over the years, many places either changed chefs or somehow lost that magic. It's been a long time since I've had that familiar feeling again. If this restaurant were in the SGV, I'd probably think, "Yeah, this is pretty good." But this is in OC! That makes it even more impressive. The restaurant also has an open kitchen, so if you're picky about Chinese food like I am, you can actually watch the chefs tossing everything over high heat while you're waiting for your food. We ordered the Hot Chili Oil Poached Sliced Beef, Mapo Tofu, Dry Pot Cauliflower, and Sole Fillet w/ Chinese Pickled Cabbage for the adults. My favorite was definitely the Mapo Tofu. It came with huge chunks of beef, silky tofu, and plenty of Sichuan peppercorns that slowly built up a wonderful numbing sensation. It was so good that it immediately made me want another bowl of rice. Next was the Hot Chili Oil Poached Sliced Beef. It wasn't just spicy--it was incredibly fragrant. Even the vegetables underneath soaked up all the flavor and tasted amazing. The Sole Fillet w/ Chinese Pickled Cabbage was another pleasant surprise. It's the kind of dish that actually makes you want to drink the soup. The fish was fresh and tender, and the hint of lemon added a light, refreshing aroma. The Dry Pot Cauliflower completely exceeded my expectations. Stir-fried with pork belly and served still sizzling, it had fantastic wok hei. The cauliflower wasn't overcooked at all and still had a nice bite, which made the texture even better. Since we had a child who doesn't eat spicy food, we also ordered the Xiao Long Bao and the Braised Beef Noodle Soup. I was told this location used to be a noodle shop, so they kept the noodle soup on the menu. The beef came in large, tender chunks, and the broth was light, naturally sweet, and comforting--perfect for kids. The Xiao Long Bao was also packed with soup. Overall, this meal was such a nostalgic experience. If you've been missing those old-school LA Sichuan restaurants with real wok hei, bold flavors, and dishes that make you keep reaching for another bowl of rice, I think this place is absolutely worth a visit. read more

PengXiang Sichuan Kitchen is the newest in a string of Chinese restaurants that have attempted to open up at this location. I wanted to try these restaurants and see why it was a revolving door. I finally got to try this one and was surprised! It was quite yummy. I happened to come on their second day of soft opening, so no one was there. The service was nice (expected since I was the only one there). But it was well decorated and clean. The food came out a little slower than I expected, but the flavors were nice. They added some sugar which made the dish less spicy but less traditional. I would have personally preferred more spice, but I understand why they decided on doing that. I also wished the dish was a little larger for the price. Overall, PengXiang is a solid new Chinese restaurant to check out in Fountain Valley. If this were an established restaurant I would've given it two stars. But since they've been open only a month I'm leaving room for improvement. The positive parts were the place was clean, the staff was attentive and polite, and the two side dishes were good (tofu noodles and spicy cucumber). However the entree of fish soup with preserved vegetables was nearly inedible. My dining partner (also Chinese) stopped eating it after a few bites. It was extremely salty ( and I like preserved vegetables). When we notified them they apologized. That's all other than agreeing next time they'd be willing to substitute another vegetable.. The noodles were pretty good, but the broth was not as savory deep and brothy. I didn't like the portions. There was very little actual beef, maybe four tiny pieces. there was only one small piece of baby bok choy. So ratio wise it was just a lot of noodles and a hint of vegetables and beef. I didn't like that at all. The shumai and shrimp dumplings were large and flavorful. They were very good. But they didn't send any dipping sauce or soy sauce or anything. This is a neighborhood Chinese restaurant. The food is authentic sichuan cuisine. We had the sour pickle cabbage fish, cauliflower and the cold noodle. The fish has a rich flavor. The fillet is on a thicker side than the typical thinner slice which I enjoy. The cauliflower was crunchy not over cooked and not salty. The cold noodle was good for the hot days with hint of tang from the vinegar. Overall the food was good. It is not usual to find authentic Chinese food in the area. This is a good place. Quick, casual eatery that came in to the space where Yummy noodle used to be. Still serving only the soft opening menu. The Spicy Crispy Chicken had a great numbing pepper flavor with a slight sweetness that made it very addictive. Been here twice so far, a nice new restaurant serving Sichuanese cuisine and some Cantonese dimsum items. The food was extremely tasty and well executed. Staff is very nice and service is quick and attentive. All the sichuanese dishes come with a strong mala flavor as expected. We were the only ones in the restaurant at the time, so our waitress graciously gave us an ice jelly dessert on the house! We ordered the fried chicken wings, Sichuan dumplings, braised beef noodle soup, kung pao chicken, and dandan noodle soup. I didn't get a chance to take pictures of some dishes because they looked and smelled so good I only remembered to take a photo after we finished the plate! Our party had shellfish and peanut allergies, so it was great how those were accommodated for us.
