We stopped in for a drink on a Friday evening while enjoying the Banff Gondola. We were seated immediately at a two topper near the bar, and of course had amazing views of the mountains and the town. We were having trouble deciding on a drink, after getting a little taster of one of the wines in question, we both decided on a glass of the Sauvignon blanc. It was the perfect way to round out our trip on the mountain! They offered both 6 and 9 ounce pours, as well as some of the wines by the bottle. We ended up eating at Northern Lights Alpine Kitchen because we missed our reservation to the other food spot at the Banff Gondola. The hostess and waiter were very kind and attentive. Northern Lights is an all you can eat buffet and it was decent for what it was. I ended up eating mostly the chicken thighs, some cheese and veggies. The kids liked the macaroni and cheese, my parents liked the brisket. There were plenty of dessert options, a soda fountain, pizza, and a salad bar. The views were incredible! They had a nice variety of things so that anyone could have something they liked. The cut brisket was a little dry, but still good. I have to give it to this restaurant for ambience and views. You literally sit on top of Sulphur Mountain looking out and all the amazing views Banff has to offer. We booked a reservation well in advance, and I am glad we did. We got a window seat with excellent views. It's a buffet, which is not my favorite, and it's not that cheap for the options provided. I don't like to think I am a picky eater but I just didn't think there were lots of options for a buffet. My favorite things were the mac and cheese and pizza. I don't think it was worth the price for those items but that's my fault for not wanting the other items. Our server was super sweet and nice to talk to. Overall, I enjoyed the experience just not the restaurant so much. I think it's good for tourists who want to take the gondola up to the top, enjoy the views and have some dinner. read more

I did expect more buffet options though the options there were just enough to keep us full the whole day. The beef tenderloin was TO DIE FOR. I kept going back. It pieced off SOOO nicely. So tender. So tasty. So flavourful and juicy. We knew alberta beef was different than ontario but this was cream of the crop. For the price of the banff gondola + buffet, to make the price worth it, you should definitely go for the hike for better views of the town, mountains and lakes. There was also a custard phyllo pastry with nuts that was very good, flaky and not too sweet. Definitely recommend the experience for just those two alone LOOL. They also had a full espresso bar and teas from a local shop. They didnt rush us to finish. We purchased a Gondola + Lunch package while visiting Banff. Each table at Northern Lights offers a different view from the top of Sulphur Mountain. The package included a one starter & one main per person. To start, we had the Alpine Salad & the Caesar Salad. Both were fresh and delicious. For our mains, we both opted for the Orchiette pasta. While the portion looked small at first, it was definitely filling. The lunch package also included free pop, coffee, tea or hot chocolate. The waitress was nice enough to give us pop & hot chocolate (made with real milk & topped with whipped cream). The views & food were both spectacular! read more

The view of the mountains can be seen at any table. The lunch buffet was not bad as the selections were less than typical buffets but understandble since it's high up. The highlight is the carving station with the meat being very tender and tasty. read more

Our expectations were high going in considering the location and price. The vegetables and sides (rice, potatoes, carrots) were just sad. The slider bar was especially awful.. the bread was as hard as a rock and they ran out of barbecue sauce in the middle of dinner time. We watched the cooking staff empty the chicken and pork from a bag. Since the meat and sides were borderline inedible, we thought the salad bar could be the one redeeming quality but boy were we mistaken. The vegetables were dried out as if they were sitting there for hours and was sticky salad dressing(?) covering all of the utensils. Alpine Kitchen makes Burger King look like a 5 star restaurant and they should be ashamed of themselves. The waitstaff, however was pleasant. Book the gondola and go elsewhere for dinner. read more

We were greeted at the the brisket station by the chef who explained the brining process and slow roast process for an excellent brisket. He even gave me a business card with the brisket recipe ( I wish I could remember his name). Another chef, Fred, made my son a custom flat bread and personally brought it to the table, even though they were busy. Food was good and the service was excellent. Prices were what I would expect for a location with a view (I've spent more for less). I don't understand the one and two star reviews posted here.
