I wanted to bring to your attention an ongoing concern regarding an employee named Mario T at your Northgate Wilmington store. This is my neighborhood Northgate Market and my go to location, but I've repeatedly had unpleasant experiences with him, both when visiting alone and when accompanied by someone else. Unfortunately, every time I encounter Mario T, my entire shopping experience changes due to his behavior and attitude. He consistently displays a passive aggressive and condescending demeanor toward customers, including myself. Having worked in customer service and retail for over 15 years, I find this extremely disappointing and concerning. During my most recent visit, when I asked for a specific type of meat, Mario responded with, "I can't hear you," even though I was speaking clearly and loudly. He also tends to correct me in a dismissive tone rather than assisting in a helpful, professional way. When I politely asked for his name, instead of providing it, he repeatedly questioned me with "Why?" and refused to give his name until I mentioned I could find it on the label. This behavior was unnecessary, unprofessional, and made me very uncomfortable. This is not the first or second time this has occurred. It's become such a recurring issue that I often consider driving to the Long Beach (Cherry Street) location just to avoid interacting with him when purchasing any meat. I truly enjoy shopping at Northgate Market and appreciate the quality and community this store offers, but this ongoing issue has negatively impacted my experience. I respectfully suggest that management address Mario T's customer service conduct and consider providing additional training or reassigning him to a role with less direct customer interaction. Marylin who was working Super Bowl Sunday in the evening was giving us the cold shoulder. My bf asks her nicely if we can self checkout an agua Fresca and instead of smiling and opening her mouth to say "yes", she has a blank stare and just nods her head. It's fine if you're having a bad day, you don't even have to smile but at least talk to me lady. And then when my bf accidentally checks the 20oz agua instead of the 32oz, she talks very quietly and tells us we were supposed to pick the correct one, like girl maybe if you were nicer and then double checked to see if we needed help we wouldn't have to go thru all that. read more

The good: This is a Mexican food market with items that may be harder to find in your average American store. Items like nopales, jamaica flowers for tea, pan dulces, conchas, etc can be found here. They have fresh agua frescas and a fresh guacamole bar. The store is very clean and organized. It was surprisingly void of any scent. The cashier, Jorge, was really friendly and helpful. He asked about our day and put our tres leches cake into a bag because the edge was dripping. A lot of reviews say this market is small but I thought it was really big! I haven't been to other Northgate Markets however. I got a slice of tres leches (fed 6 people) for under $7 and it was delicious! I wanted to get a small tres leches cake but it only came in 8" cakes or larger. There is plenty of parking. They had a variety of Mexican cremas to choose from and pre-marinated/spiced meats. The bad: I couldn't find canned black olives. They had green olives though. I guess olives on enchiladas must not be an authentic Mexican thing? The interesting: They have self check-out kiosks that require that you scan the barcode on your receipt in order to exit. I've never seen this feature before! read more

Was looking for an authentic tres leches cake and I surveyed my authentic Mexican friends. Most of them directed me to Northgate market. This location was the closest to me.... I haven't been to any of the other locations, but this place is smaller than what I imagined. It's a compact grocery store, probably the size of your average Trader Joe's. They have all the necessities if you're looking for a Mexican/Hispanic spices and ingredients. The prices are fairly cheap and they have a hot foods section that seems interesting. Interesting as in I would go back and make some purchases. They had several tamale varieties also. The cake itself tasted authentic. I did like the mocha twist as most tres leches I've had have been the traditional whipped cream icing. I guess it passes the authentic tres leches flavor. I'm not Mexican so I have my own favorites. In my opinion, I've had better, but to each their own. I visited around 5-5:30 on a Wednesday, so I guess I came during rush hour. There were only two lanes open and it was fairly slow. This location is not as good as the other locations. They never have fresas con crema and the tamales are always overly greasy. I got one today which was completely unacceptable. It was dripping in grease and didn't even have enough mesa to cover the filling. They have someone manning the tamales so I don't think I would have chosen this thin tamale but this is unacceptable. The store also has an unfriendly vibe. I go to the other locations and don't feel anything shopping and buying my items but here I get a distinct what are you doing here vibe. It's from the customers and the cashiers. As a black person I don't feel welcome here. I really hate coming to this one and will only come if I have to. I want to give this place five stars but I honestly can't. The store is very tiny in comparison to other grocery stores and they don't have all the items that I need. They are practicing safety covid measures by placing plastic glass screens to protect the employees from the customers at the registers. I like that they also have these protective screens by the carneceria. The four star review is based off of the sweet Mexican bread selection that they have which is awesome. Also they have different type of fresh squeezed juices which is another huge plus for me. They have different types of juices like mango, strawberry, and horchata; all freshly made as early as 8:30 am. You can pick up hot Mexican drinks too like atole and champurado. Overall if you're looking for an authentic Hispanic grocery store, this is the place you can do your shopping at. Just don't expect it to have everything you need. Probably one of the worst mexican supermarkets I've ever been to. The marinated meat was super salty and overly expensive. The horchata was so sweet that I had to get rid of it. Came in for bolillos (Mexican bread) and people were crowding around the bakery waiting for them to come out fresh out of the oven. They're worth the wait! A gentleman named Daniel (manager maybe) came in to take orders and have people prepay to facilitate everything. He was very helpful and even went behind the bakery counter to help out. When I got to the cash register, the cashier tells me I must buy 3 packs of coke for them to be 6.99 each. I explain that the price tag reads 6.99 in huge lettering and doest not say that I must buy 3. She then brings her manager (Zennia) to explain it to me. I mention that I understand what they're saying, and I explain to them that the sign says 6.99 in big letters, that if I need to buy 3 they should remove that big sign instead of tricking people, or add "must buy 3" in that big sign as well. Love this market. The food is great and the employees are nice and helpful. The prices are good too. However.... I dread the parking here. The area is cramped to move your vehicle around in. There are shopping carts that customers left taking up space that could be used to park. I often have to exit my vehicle to move a shopping cart out of the way to free up space to park my vehicle. However, I was a bit grossed out when I saw an employee slicing avocados in the middle of an aisle while customers walked closely past her. She was doing this next to the enclosed area where fresh guacamole and aguas frescas were available for purchase. NorthGAaaAaTeeee. This Northgate is pretty small. I was here over the weekend because some of the food here is usually cheaper than your local Ralphs. I think I was the only Asian in that supermarket. Doesn't matter though, I know a good deal when I see one. There isn't as many things in this supermarket as other Northgate supermarkets I've been in. There's a food section where you could get your Spanish rice, carnitas, etc.. but there wasn't as much of a selection. Of course, I did get an order of the rice, beans, and a chile relleno to go. The rice and beans are good. The chile relleno was... okay. 3 stars for the chile relleno. The cheese wasn't even melted in it.. it was cube-y. Carnitas are okay. I'd get them again. Wasn't able to get the pollo adobado? here. Their panderia was decent. They had what I usually get so I'm not complaining. I love the smell of all the breads. Parking is a zoo. Kind of. I needed to find a Mexican supermarket so I yelped for one in the Southbay. I was surprised that this was listed as the closest one to San Pedro. Located about a mile and a half from the 110 freeway and Pacific Coast Highway, next to a CVS is this Northgate. There are many locations in Orange County, so I am familiar with the chain. This particular location is smaller than most, but it does have pretty much everything you need; the produce section isn't the largest but sufficient. Same with the meat and seafood section. You get better deals with the meats and produce than by going to an American market. For example, I bought wild caught shrimp at Northgate for $3.99 a pound. At Ralph's they sold their raw shrimp at $8.99 a pound. The downside of coming here is the place caters to the Latinos. Anyone else is a minority. The signs maybe bilingual but español is first, then it's ingles. The place is small, and it's wall to wall shoppers. It's easy to get overwhelmed as you wait for your turn at the deli and meat counter, and some shoppers don't seem to understand what a queue is. The parking lot is large but like many ethnic places, people can't drive or park. 3-1/2 generous stars for fulfilling my shopping need. read more

I've been here on a dozen of occasions and no matter what time of the day any day of the week this place is packed!. I hate it you cannot just go in here and get what you want and leave. The amount of people here is insane but to be honest there isn't anymore main markets in Wilmington since the Ralph's was removed all those years ago. Also it's hard to find authentic Spanish Mexican items in other markets as well so a lot of families come here for that specific item. You cannot just go anywhere for fresh baked bollio( it's like a Mexican French roll). So I will say that but Im glad I do not have to come here often because I get most of my groceries from Trader Joe's. read more

This store moved from its original location on Avalon Blvd & L Street due to the construction Harry Bridges School. Many residents and business had to relocate and many already know the Harbor area has limited vacant grocery store spaces. NGM was lucky enough to find another space and remain serving the community. Yes, this location is smaller & it does feel a little crammed but at least now you know why. The prices make up for it as they are better when compared to some of the larger chains particularly noticeable in the fresh items. Most everything required for preparing Mexican cuisine can be found here. The highlights: Produce: Avas, nopales, camote del cerro, flor de calabaza, chile pasilla, chiles serrano, plus other chile varieties, peruvian beans, various fresh & dry herbs, tunas, jonoistes, Mexican papaya & juicy ripe mangos! (They also carry regular produce items.) Bakery: Readily available pan dulce (sweet Mexican bread), gelatinas (specialty gelatin), arroz con leche (sweet rice w milk), tres leches cakes (3 milk cakes), etc. and they take orders for special events. Tortillería: Fresh tortillas (taquito, regular, homestyle, huarache, etc sizes) made every day as well as masa for tamales. FYI the tortillas are sooooo good they actually run out in the evening! Cafeteria: Ready made beans, rice, chiles rellenos, guacamole (spicy!) and other items available for take out. They also take catering orders. IMHO some of their items are overly salted/spicy. Deli: All cuts of meat, poultry, fish & seafood. They have some marinated ready for your grilling as well as fresh Mexican & Central American style cheese and sour cream. Minus a star for a foul odor from the deli section. Grocery: Mexican products intermingled with regular American products for one stop shopping. Other services: Check cashing, utility payments, money orders, & money transfers (out of the country). Parking: This store shares parking with other businesses including a CVS & Goodwill, I recommend parking a little farther from the store or even on the street. You'll get in and out quicker, trust me =). Arriving early or late is best to avoid the crowds. First of all, I'm glad this store is getting bigger as it needed to have been since "Day 1". Even though it's pretty crowded, the employees here have such good attitudes at all times. There's not a day that their employees are not smiling or helping someone out. Good job to the young lady Michel R. as I was grocery shopping. Seen her a couple times and she used to be the person who would do a great job on bagging the groceries (the right way) and now she's a Cashier. Good job guys, definitely worth it! The whole time I spent while paying for my stuff, she was talking to me and was very aware of all the codes needed (wouldn't be able to do that myself.
