Had a surprisingly good dinner at the Northside 29 Diner tonight. I always thought hey, it's a diner on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. But we decided to try it after my roommate saw someone post about it on Facebook and then looked at Yelp reviews. In all the years I worked at Highland, I never thought about stopping here. It was average. Service was good, but the food was really unremarkable. Was wanting to try another breakfast option in the area aside from Eggspectation, but the food at Northside didn't really compare. The pancakes were super dense, yet dry, and the potatoes my wife had seemed like they had chunks of yesterday's grease in them due to the skillet top not being cleaned too well. We stopped for breakfast last Sunday. The service was terrible. The food was worse. My eggs which I ordered medium were served petrified. The toast under the chipped beef was burned. The chipped beef: Where was the beef? It was Elmers Glue--flour and milk. My partner's BLT was served with wilted lettuce on burned toast as well. The waitress said she could have redone the eggs. Had she ever checked before we had to go, perhaps she could have. NEVER AGAIN! I have never been served so much awful food at one time. It was disgusting as were the attitudes of the staff. My wife and I have been to Northside 29 several times now. Between us we have tried the country fried steak (both dinner and breakfast versions), Salmon (which I ordered blackened), cottage pie, chicken and dumplings, shrimp po boy sandwich, honey dipped chicken, meatloaf, flat iron steak, prime rib, and spaghetti with meat sauce. We've also had corn fritters, chili, and various desserts. Generally we liked the food. There are a couple of exceptions. The spaghetti and meat sauce was a disappointment and the salmon was not blackened but just had the cajun spice poured onto the top of the fish. However, the flat iron steak and the breakfast country fried steak was first rate. I specify breakfast because at breakfast they use sausage gravy but at dinner only a cream gravy. I crowed about this place at my office and one of my friends went there. She claimed to have had an awful experience. So I went back and during my dinner I spoke to the owner. She was mortified that someone had a problem. She pulled the ticket from my friends visit and told my to have them come back in and ask for her. Northside 29 buys as much as possible locally, including meat from a local farm, burger buns from Washington's renowned Ottenberg's bakery, and fabulous desserts from a bakery in Remingon, VA. I did ask the owner a question about something that was puzzling me. The mashed potatoes are fresh made but the gravy tasted like it came out of a jar. Tracy, one of the owners, said that the gravy is made there using a mix and beef stock and drippings. To me, this kind of epitomizes this restaurant. Some dishes are just wonderful (flat iron steak and chicken and dumplings)but some taste like they are canned (the spaghetti and the gravy). OH! I also have to admit that we have not really tried the Greek dishes. As the owners are a Greek family I'd expect a lot. All in all I gave this place a 4. I did this mainly because of the staff, the corn fritters, the dishes that we loved, and especially the desserts! read more

This is a hidden gem. We went for dinner on a Friday evening. The food was to die for and the wait staff was so attentive. The sweet tea - made from heaven. The staff was always refilling our drinks. Food was affordable and I can't wait to try everything on the menu. The experience has turned us into fans and future regular patrons. Looking forward to going back again. read more

I was very hopeful when I saw this quirky mom and pop diner on my way to Charlottesville this morning. We pulled in and the wait staff were a little flustered, but friendly. When we sat down and ordered our food, the waitress didn't seem to make note of special requests (could you bring peanut butter, please?) and, in consequence, she forgot a parts of our order. Wait staff changes, so that's less important. The real kicker, though- the food was truly dreadful. The potatoes were over salted and covered in grease. The Belgian waffle wasn't even cooked all the way. The food actually upset my stomach and that of my dining companion. I will obviously not be visiting this place again. read more

Don't know how to start this off, but this restaurant is supposed to specialize in "greek" food and the crap they serve is a very, very poor substitute. These owners must take no pride at all in serving authentic greek cuisine, but that's not all that was terrible..the interior of the restaurant just looks completely worn down and the chairs and booths looked like they were bought from a garage sale. I have been coming to Northside since it opened. The environment is very nice and gives you a warm feeling. Its always very clean as well. For the food, overall its very good. During breakfast it can get quite busy. I have had 3 different things from their breakfast menu, the waffles, the biscuits and gravy, and the southwest omelette. The waffle was very good, nothing exciting there. The biscuits and gray were probably the best ive had in years. The omelette on the other hand, had absolutely no flavor, I mean, NO flavor. Their dinner menu is good as well, nothing exciting. Their hamburgers are very good, as well as their fish and chips, which is easily my favorite meal ive had there. If you want a simple, quiet, good homecooking place to eat, this is the place. read more

Our party of six had breakfast here last Sunday morning, and we were delighted the restaurant was back in business. Everyone was pleased with their choices, from basic eggs over easy/medium/well to huge fluffy pancakes to omelets and burritos. Our waitress, Kelly, was very friendly and attentive. The coffee was very good, and the food arrived hot and within a reasonable amount of time. Everything, including the decor--and the restrooms!--was an improvement over the Town and Country. We had not yet been to Northside and had heard mixed reviews from friends. Going in the only thing I knew was that they have breakfast and served comfort food. So I took the in laws Friday night with the intentions of getting country fried steak. The outside of this place isn't anything too special, gravel parking lot. The inside seemed to have 3 main areas, 2 dining rooms and a bar area in the back. We arrived early enough to take advantage of the happy hour beer prices which they allowed us to use from the dining room. 4 out of 5 adults ended up getting the country fried steak. It comes with mashed potatoes, gravy, and 1 more side. It was good, crispy and beefy; so were the potatoes, and grilled veggies (grilled to order). As good as it was you get just one piece of steak, and at $15 its pushing my sense of value. The service was attentive and pleasant. I'm sure to be back to try some of their other dishes. read more

Wish they would have stopped making changes to so many of their food items, such as country fried steak, country ham, rolls, butter...it used to be great. The quality of the food has dropped to a level to stop us from ever eating a meal there again. Everything now taste like it's no longer made from scratch, and is from Costco freezer. The wife and I go there often, usually after church. Since the new management has been in place, the food is always good, in particular the grits my wife simply MUST have with breakfast! We went for their Valentine's Day special, and my WORD was it terrific! A 5-course dinner for a great price. Soup & salad, appetizer, main course and dessert - what's not to like? The appetizers were yummy, my wife thoroughly enjoyed her french onion soup (not too salty, great beefy broth), and my ham & bean soup was hearty. Their salads are fresh and not overwhelming. We ordered the fillets (wrapped in bacon, by the way), and they arrived just as ordered. Dessert did not disappoint: chocolate mousse and red velvet cake in whipped cream. In addition, we received a complementary bottle of wine with dinner (a nice California pinot grigio - delish!) Service was prompt and attentive. We did feel a bit rushed, they need to work on stretching out their timing between courses, but all in all it was a fabulous experience. I recommend them and will bring friends to dine there. I'd give it 31/2 stars if I could. Wife had the meatloaf with two sides. Food was fresh and plentiful. I had gyro platter which was fresh but not plentiful. Included a very small Greek salad and a few fried zucchini slices. Not a good value. Place was quiet on an early Saturday night but picked up by the time we were finished. Service was only average. My wife and I had breakfast there for the first time this morning around 11am. The coffee was great and Service was good. Ham and eggs were fine, but biscuits must have been setting out for a while. My husband and I LOVE coming here for any meal any time of day. The food is great and home-cooking style. Nothing fancy...just your simple favorites for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The servers we've had are always friendly and do their best to take care of you. Our favorite one is Jacob. Love his personality. We enjoy talking with him. He really keeps you smiling. The prices here are super reasonable too. Their bathrooms are absolutely lovely - almost spa-like - and really clean, which is pretty important. I love their new backyard patio too. Tonight was our 4th visit. Three breakfasts which were all terrific; tonight for dinner. The medium prime rib came out looking like it had been sitting in a warm oven for the day, well done and tough and tasteless. I had the rib and chicken BBQ dish. The chicken was truly delicious; hot, juicy and tender. The ribs were under done -- far from falling off the bone, which is expected when ordering ribs. A $43 dinner with a glass of wine. Definitely not worth the cost and a return trip for dinner. We will stick with breakfast. The owner needs to sit down and eat the food they are serving. The staff is always friendly and service is good. Can't say that about the dinners. read more

rode our Harleys out hwy 29, we stopped for a bite of comfort food, a late lunch. Not much comfort food on the menu though. We both had chili and unsweet tea. The young server was clearly looking to leave (and soon as we got our food, we saw her leave). The tea is strong and tasty. The chili however is some of the worst I have ever eaten. Ever. It was 90% beans, very little meat, and was so acidic and bitter that it was almost inedible; needs more meat and a teaspoon or two of honey or sugar to mellow out the terrible bitterness. The three of us had a great lunch experience here today. The food was very good, prices were reasonable, and the service was 10 out of 10. Once in a blue moon, I get a waiter who really seems to read my mind. Most of the time, I sit there wondering when they're going to do what good waitstaff is supposed to do without asking...take our drink order right away, come back in a reasonable time after we mention we're not ready to order yet, confirm what we order so WE know he's got it right, deliver the food hot and exactly as we'd ordered, check back often enough (but not annoyingly so) to see if we need or want anything else, etc. etc., and all with a sincere smile and attitude. Be sure to ask for Michael D. when you go. In my entire life, he is on my top 10 list of best waiters I've ever had. That boy rocks. I have heard great things about their breakfast, but i have not tried it yet. I took my family there a few days ago to have dinner. I was disappointed in the meal I ordered. I asked the server how their Chicken and Dumplings were. He replied that it is a popular item and really good. When I received this meal, it was horrible. This food was not made from scratch. It was made with cream of celery and cream of chicken soup, frozen vegetables (corn and peas). There was barely any chicken and only 2 dough balls that seemed to have been previously frozen. In addition, the meal was way over salted. The sides that accompanied this dinner dish I selected were green beans and mashed potatoes. The green beans were from a can and simmered with bacon for a little extra flavor. The potatoes... wow! They were fake potatoes and topped with canned brown gravy. My expectations for a diner are exceptional food made from scratch and this clearly is not the case! Again, maybe the breakfast is much better, but I was completely disappointed with my dinner experience. read more

I travel in this direction frequently and if the food we got for our breakfast yesterday was an indication of what is possible, then this is where I will be eating when I travel through this area. We live close to here and have gone to this place many times since they reopened as Northside 29. Most of our experience was positive. One birthday, several years ago, I was surprised by a whole black forest cake that my family asked to have made by the baker there. We took most of the cake home and froze it. It was great. We have come for the half priced hamburgers several times (great), a couple times for breakfast, once for crab legs (wonderful), some Greek food (as good as you can get on the Islands). The only time we were not pleased was when we went to a special presentation with a free meal by a company. We ordered steak tips and it was mostly grissel and fat. Terrible. I will have to say, I do like the bathroom, rustic and cool. It seems that this could be a community watering hole since I see a lot of neighbors there. They have corn hole and a bar that may be popular with the younger adults. It has come a long way from the Town and Country Restaurant it replaced when I grew up in this area. read more

My husband and I have been going to this restaurant for a few years now, mostly for breakfast. I've not been impressed the last few times we have been here for dinner. I think the food is overpriced for the quality. The chips that were served with the spinach/artichoke dip were greasy and soggy. Not strong enough to handle a hearty dip and they didn't taste like much, just grease. Other food we have tried was just ok. Burger was fair, nothing special. Fish and chips platter gives you a lot of food, but lots of greasy fried breading and not much fish inside. I think we will just stick to this place for breakfast which is a nice alternative to the chain restaurants like IHOP. This is a good place for a home cooked breakfast. They only serve caribou coffee which to me is very strong, so I usually get a hot tea. I wish I could like this place more as I like to support local family-owned restaurants and prefer them to chain restaurants. On a side note, I contacted the restaurant on their website regarding an issue we had with the food, but never got any sort of reply back. read more
