Hired solely based on the Yelp reviews. Wish I'd gone to a different company. Overall liked the guy and he does work hard, but my job could have gone better. 1. He can't/won't do two story houses. Doesn't carry a ladder long enough and if your problem is near the roof, you get referred to his contractor. I disclosed my two story house so feel he should have told me this before I booked. Now I've paid Matthew and now I have to pay for a contractor to finish the job. I could have hired a company prepared to handle my entire job. 2. He's a one man shop, so be prepared to wait if the previous job runs long. I lost an entire weekend waiting for him to show up. He communicated well, but that didn't change the delay. He offered to rebook me nearly two weeks away, which seemed unfair since I'd already waited two weeks to book my appointment. I thought the difficult job could have been rebooked and he kept on schedule rather than pushing everyone else down the line. 3. On his receipt, he "fails" your dryer duct like you hired him to inspect it rather than clean it. That's like your house cleaner "failing" your floors when s/he didn't do them. Matthew failed to complete the job. 4. He's tactic is more DIY than trained technician. He performed what he calls the "tee-pee" test, which is colored bits of tissue in the vents and a run outside to see if they come out the vent. Ingenious for a home owner cleaning their own vent, but FFS... Anyway, my advice to anyone reading is as follows: Hire this company if you have a single story home. He is honest and hardworking as others have mentioned. I just wish he'd have saved me both the time and money. read more

Matthew from Northstar did an amazing job cleaning our dryer vent duct today. Upon a previous company's assessment, we thought we needed to get a booster fan, etc to resolve our issue. When Matthew came to give his assessment, he truly went through all options and gave us his feedback to show that we didn't need a booster fan and that our ducts could be cleaned. This helped reduce work, money, and just the overall hassle of getting something like that done. After everything was done, we noticed a difference in how our dryer worked, as well as the type of heat put out by the dryer. The amount of lint that he cleaned out as well was also pretty nuts, it was enough to fill a 5 gal. bucket. lol We appreciated Matthew's honesty and professionalism. We definitely recommend him! This guy is an ACE! Talk about doing a thorough job--he wrote the book. We arranged for what I expected would be a vacuum-type lint cleanout starting at the outside vent, but by inspecting from outside he determined the aluminum hose was all crimped from inside, so he moved the stacked dryer/washer combo, showed me how the installer had jammed it in too close, repositioned the stacked units, reinstalled the alum hose correctly, vacuumed & pulled out EVERY piece of lint imaginable, and after all that he demonstrated that we now had stronger airflow to the outside vent than we'd ever seen. Handed me an invoice for $69, which I refused, and instead paid him a good deal more for his extra efforts in putting our dryer in better working order than it's ever been! Matt went above and beyond for us. I hadn't had my dryer vent cleaned since I've been in the house, 2008, and I doubt the owner before us did either. Turned out the roofers put the wrong vent on when they put the new roof on in 2008 and it blocked the air as well as the lint coming out. He had to cut the sheet metal off the sides of the vent and proceeded to clean it. There was quite a bit of lint stuck up at the top and it was definitely a fire hazard. Mark explained everything in detail and took pictures to show me what was going on up there. Matt showed up within his arrival window and asked why I called him out. I told him my dryer was throwing a code regarding blocked airflow, and with the dryer vent being on the roof, I felt it best to consult someone who knows what they are doing. Matt walked me through all of the steps in his process, beginning with inspecting the inside of the dryer up to the roof measuring airflow coming out of the vent duct. The primary culprit seemed to be some anti-pest meshing that someone had placed over the exhaust pipe, which had become clogged with lint.
