Needed to replace my 3 ton gas furnace at home. Northstar came out and evaluated the situation and wrote an estimate on the spot. The guy was very pushy, using phrases like, "if you care about quality" and "if all you care about is getting a cheap job" and "what can I do to have you sign now?" and so on. He wasn't AT ALL ok with us getting additional bids as he insisted that "we are quite competitive, so you don't have to check" Bottom line, I got another estimate the next day from a local family-owned company, for the EXACT SAME product and service, for HALF the price. HALF! So, I'm now paying $6,500 rather than $13,218. Oh, and just to add insult, we had to pay $39 for the estimate. read more

We were having an issue with whole home AC in Lake Arrowhead and reached out to the team at Northstar. Frank and Estavon spent a few hours researching the problem and after getting into the crawl space discovered that my return duct flow had collapsed preventing my unit from working properly. They kept me involved throughout the whole process, and after a couple of days were able to remove the damage and rebuild that ducting. I have the same complaint as other yelpers: lack of transparency. My AC was not working so I called for a service call. The quoted price for the service call was: $59. A technician came, found the problem (or problems), and said $585 to fix it. I said that is fine but can you tell me what you're gonna do? How much were parts and how much was labor? The guy refused to give me the details and said that the company policy: take it or leave it. So I said leave it and paid $59 for the trip cost. Later, the office called to collect the $59. I told the office that I would go with your proposal and estimate if you tell me what you will do. Unfortunately, The office lady said that it's the company policy, and they will not give details of what they will do with the system. I think what I am asking for is not unreasonable. If I bring a car in for service, I would expect them to tell me what they will do because if the same thing breaks again, I know to ask the same people to look at it again. If Northstar can't tell me what they will do, how do I know the parts that they touch will not break again? I called another HVAC company. They told me that they will replace the starter and add about 3 lbs of freon. The cost was $440. read more

AC was not blowing cold air but even Jesus Moreno came to save the day! Quoted the $59 diagnostic price but would be waived if I went through with the service. Turns out had to replace the capacitor (they charged $459, which I thought was expensive). Jesus was nice and even wiped down the attic after he was done! We had a terrible experience with this company. They are misleading and tricky. We paid them $9,800 dollars for a "full waste re-pipe", which they said would include replacing all the corroded main line to the street. Instead, all they did was replace a few pipes in the basement. Apparently they had changed the wording in the latest invoice to "main line in the build up". They explained when we complained that this meant only the portion of the main line accessible in the building was included. Yes, we are the suckers that signed a contract without double checking to make sure it matched exactly what was discussed and quoted, but they are clearly not trying to be transparent. Sadly, I have to update this review negatively. Unfortunately my last experience left a very bad taste in my mouth. I called for service regarding a smell under the sink asking for someone to come check the drain for a potential leak under the house do to the smell being that of wet and rotting wood. Also, requested to have my sink riser drain replaced as it has also been an issue. The tech showed up opened my sink cabinet and immediately without looking claiming there is mold under the sink. He began telling me the mold remediation steps and even called a remediation company for them to call me. While he was I also asked if he could quote the riser. Said he would need a camera to do that and he didn't have one - unprepared for the original call. He quoted me the price on running the camera and then told me "I already know something is wrong so I'm going to charge you half price for the camera run." Which basically means to mean that the discount will get made up on the repair and fix. I scheduled the camera appointment. Basically wasted an hour of nothing. I cancelled the remediation appointment due to the multiple reviews of that particular company being scammers. Hired a separate remediation company and they found there was not a single trace of mold and that indeed there was a crack in the drain that was dripping under the house. The leak was right under the crawl space opening he wouldn't have even had to crawl under there had he taken the time and not immediately panicked with the mold comments. For me it was the being unpreparedness as well as the need to not take the time to investigate as well as the immediate "sales pitch" for the camera. That has lost me as a customer. I've used them for a drain clean out previously as well as my pipe install and they were great. Sadly, this visit left a bad taste in my mouth and has basically turned this long term customer away. Sad to see so many businesses now days go for the short term sale and not the long term customer. read more

Product quality: 3 stars We had two installations, two years apart - the first one is still working fine, but the recent 2024 install had a bad motor (seizure) 6 months after installation on the first day we used it on the hottest day of the year. Techs: 4 stars Capable, personable and want to help the customer. Special kudos to David who recently helped me. Customer service: 1 star Based on recent experience, when we turned on our newly installed AC unit on the hottest day of the year the motor seized and we had no AC. We immediately scheduled an appointment to replace the motor the day after we were to return from vacation. Fabiola, a service tech, sent a text reminder the day before and I responded "Yes" to the appointment, what time will you be here?" The next morning prior to the appointment time I get a call from NorthStar customer service saying they "cancelled my appointment because I didn't confirm it". Well, first of all, I DID CONFIRM IT and I have the text that shows I did. Second, what's the point of scheduling an appointment if you can cancel it like you did without cause? Third, do you anywhere tell the customer that you will cancel the appointment they made with you (a commitment for both parties) unless you confirm it the day before? (Hint: the answer is NO). When I finally got hold of the service team manager, he told me "Oh, I figured you did not want us to come out on the service call because you wrote a bad review." What??? What is it, I didn't confirm it or you don't get service if you write a bad review? I am very displeased with this part of NorthStar service and want to warn other potential customers that you may have to deal with a situation like this. read more

Andrew was out today to look at a possible leak my 80 year old mother noticed in her ceiling which is located directly below the HVAC unit on our roof. Andrew went "above and beyond" by doing a thorough assessment of our HVAC unit, roof, suspected leak in our ceiling, and the attic. He informed us, to our relief, that there were no visible signs of a leak or water damage in any of these areas. He then performed the annual Winter maintenance on the unit (in the rain) to ensure the heater is working properly. It is always a pleasure to see Andrew. I just received a call and voicemail from Cynthia at Northstar saying my service contract was transferred to her company and they were offering a free complementary maintenance on my heating and air-conditioning unit. The company that she made reference to, I've never had a service contract with. These people are scammers and hustlers, beware... BTW, I just spoke to the company I have my real service contract with, they are blown away! I shared your voicemail with them to forward to their legal department. Expect a call Cynthia. Follow up to the owner: Thank you for your apology. Your company called me, again indicating that my HVAC company "transferred my service contract to your company".. I'm not mincing words here. You called me with false information, offering a complementary service? My service contract which I've paid for, includes the bi-annual maintenance, why on earth would I a need a complimentary service when my contract includes it. The whole thing is extremely unprofessional and fishy. I then called Cynthia, and she indicated that my service contract "again" was transferred to your company and that you all had my name from this "bogus" previous company's database. We selected Northstar because of the positive reviews and the fact that the cost to provide an estimate was under $20. Our air conditioning system was working intermittently and after a quick assessment we were advised that despite the fact that we replaced our entire system less than two years ago that the coil in the attic had gone bad. He provided a long explanation that the conversion of the old system to the current likely was not flushed and the combination of the chemicals of the old and new was a common problem that caused the valve on the coil to go bad prematurely. The estimate to change the valve(he advised this would require numerous man hours, welding etc.) was over $2700 and that it was best to replace the coil which would cost over $2900. Luckily I contacted the Amanda company inquiring about the warranty and they provided me with the contact information for Brrr Air-conditioning that would be able to do warranty work for them. When Brrr came out, in about 10 minutes he detected that the issue was that the drain in the coil was clogged that triggered a safety in the system, causing the cold air to stop to prevent flooding. He quickly cleared the drain and charged me only a $65 service changed. It was repaired literally in 20 minutes. We are so blessed that we got a second opinion. read more

We have been using Northstar for several years now, since they inherited us from our previous heating and air conditioning company. We have always been happy with their service. The office staff is friendly and helpful, if they can't answer our questions, they will call back with the answer. Any technicians that have come out to service our units are knowledgeable and professional. We have a service contract so they call us twice a year to set up an appointment. This time when Rick came out he had bad news. He found several problems with our 19 year old heater and suggested we finally replace it because fixing it would cost almost as much. He also suggested we replace the air conditioner at the same time since it is making strange noises and is leaking up in our attic. We picked out new units and made an appointment for installation. The next day Enrique, Jarell and (another Rick) came out to do the installation. We were impressed with how fast they worked and how well they work together. Enrique is very knowledgeable, explained what they were doing and answered any questions we had. He even came by the next day to do some followup. These guys are the Boom! They did a total ducting replacement in the blazing heat; they were relentless. Then they cleaned any area they had been in and hauled away the old ducting. Pricing was not the cheapest, or the most expensive either. I'd like to say their pricing was in the middle, but then I'd have to believe the low quotes could complete such high-quality work. Loved that they showed up in a mask, as safety is number one. They shut up right on time as promised. The upstairs toilet was leaking water and they were able to stop the leak.
