I went here on a Saturday around 4:30. We sat in the bar area. The wait staff was very attentive. The restaurant had a nice lighting and tv/entertainment scheme. It was pleasant inside. Came in around 3pm and it was not busy at all, we were seated immediately in the bar area to take advantage of happy hour specials. Our server Brian was exceptionally friendly and answered all of our questions about the food, even let us taste some of the wines before picking which bottle we wanted! I'm giving it 3 stars because of service. This is my 3rd time being there and I was not satisfied with how it all came about. (The other 2 times were great!) But we got there around 5:15ish on Friday, to our surprise it wasn't busy yet. Our server was very polite & on top of it. Once we ordered our food and attempted to order more bread, she became smart & uninterested in our table. We asked another server if bread was free/Unlimited which she stated yes & she'd give us more. She then told the manager & we never saw her again. We got a refill of bread which came out with two slices, there's 3 of us sitting at the table keep in mind. It also took 10 minutes to get my fancy cocktail and the bar was pretty empty. She didn't come back to check on us or give us any refills on drinks until we were all finished. My carrots were extremely undercooked & raw, I'd love to get another side but she never came back. We didn't order cheap meals, mine was atleast 40 bucks. So it's not like asking for more bread was a problem. Or knowing bread was unlimited as it has been in the past. Also, the manager checked on ALL the surrounding tables but not once ours. We even made eye contact. So I ate here yesterday with my valentine; the place has very modern decor. The customer service is PHENOMENAL; not just our server but almost every server that walked pass our table made sure we had everything we needed. The managers were very interactive throughout the restaurant and they made sure they extended the warm welcome. The food was really good; I honestly can't remember exactly what I had but it was the Valentines Day special. My Valentine had the Mustard Crusted Chicken which was really good. We started with the Thai Chicken Lettuce Wraps, Buffalo Caribbean Chicken Tenders, and Cheese Steak Egg Rolls. The oil, pepper, and parmesan cheese dip was good to dip the bread in. The Peanut Butter Ball for desert was fun and tasty. The only thing I did not like is the Steak and Cheese Egg Rolls. I felt the steak was too thick but none the less my Valentine did not waste them. I had ordered the Not Your Average Joe's salad as a side to my meal and it was okay. My Blu Cheese was not added as it was apart of the salad so I had to ask for a side of it to add myself. NYAJ's is a solid entry in the restaurant smorgasbord that is Reston Town Center. Technically right outside the Town Center proper, this newcomer to the area is a trendy chain with locations scattered throughout the area. Interesting cocktails and rotating specials keep the drink menu interesting. Food is inspired and well crafted, especially for a chain restaurant. Service can be slow, especially in the bar, and can also fill up very quick. Additionally, drink specials are bar only so if you aren't lucky enough to find a seat/table you're stuck paying full price. I've been back a few times and have no problem with this place but it's not a must visit compared to some of the other options in RTC. read more

One of the newer restaurants in the RTC area. I checked it out on opening day and have been back a few different times. Originally I thought the place stood out from the regular town center hubbub, sadly I see now it's no different. Usually crowded and loud, the food is nothing special. I did try a spicy cocktail from the bar while waiting, think it was called Diablo or something. Id recommend if you like spice. Other than that, nothings jumping off the page. I've had the jambalaya, burgers, meatloaf, but nothing really stands out. If you've never been to a Joes in the past, id say go for it. if you have, it's just another Joes and nothing special. read more

Was back in NOVA for thanksgiving with family, and gave Not Your Average Joes a try with some friends the night before. When we arrived the place was pretty busy, had a great feel. We were sat immediately at a cocktail table in the bar area (make sure to check in with the host as apparently these aren't self seating). Our server, Ryan (very quirky guy--nice but strange in a good way) greeted us quickly. We started with a round of drinks and ahi tuna. The cocktails were perfectly made! Tuna was nice and fresh! Shortly after our apps arrived, a different server Kelly came by offering to take our order... she explained that "everyone at Joes is a team", and that Ryan was busy so she'd get us taken care of. Dinner came out super fast, with the best dish being the jambalaya! Not too spicy! Kelly came back over and offered another round... when we ordered a round of glasses of wine, she pointed out that we would actually save money on the same quantity if we just ordered a bottle (half priced bottles on Wednesday's)... so we ordered two.... buy one get one right? Of course we had to do dessert.... so the table shared a peanut thing and apple sticks... and... omg. The atmosphere of this place was fun and relaxed, but by no means a dive. They are a gem in Reston where everything seems to be made into a huge event, or is tacky... nothing in between... nothing perfect like Not Your Average Joes! Until next time. read more

This place never disappoints! Tonight my husband and I devoured the bread (of course). He got the sirloin tips and I got the pecan crusted pesto salmon. We both basically inhaled our food it was so good. We had an amazing server named Tina, who was so sweet, and she added some extra balsamic glaze on the sirloin tips for the hubby. She hooked it up! That was a BIG mistake. We decided to order one of their popular dishes, jambalaya. The rice was so crunchy I thought I was eating cheetos. Wife got the Chicken Piccata, usually theres a lemon accent to the sauce but her sauce tasted like old butter.Our food wasn't made with any type of love, maybe it was because we came before a bit closing. Our server Mason was very kind to us and helpful! He's probably the best thing that has happened to this restaurant because the manager on duty couldn't even take a minute to apologize. With all the pictures posted of the food compared to ours tonight, I'm starting to wonder if we went to the same restaurant. I have dined at not your average Joes in Newbury Port, MA which has always been my best Not your average Joe's experience. I have also dined in Ashburn and only thought it was ok. The best part of the experience was the bread. I tried to make a reservation online only to have it direct me to open table error that said it wasn't working. I thought perhaps they didn't take reservations, not the case. Got there on Sunday evening and waited 40 minutes. They then got us up from our community table where we were having beers, only to have us wait 10 minutes to set the table. The food was only ok, I have the grilled chicken parmesan sandwich and the focaccia bread seemed stale. Perhaps they just have some kinks to work out, just wasn't super impressed to go back... I am coming back to this review, because of the wonderful customer service I received after I contacted Not Your Average Joe's. The General Manager called me personally to address the issues I had and went above and beyond to win me back as a guest of Not Your Average Joe's. That personally meant a lot to me and will definitely give it another try and believe it will be a much better experience. The food is surprisingly good. The appetizer for all tables is a wonderful bread with olive oil dip that always delights our family. The menu changes now and then (the wedge salad disappeared recently but I can still find it at The Bulletin) but other salads have an amazing choice of several different vinaigrettes which says, to me, that they really care about researching their menu. I recommend the Cobb Salad and the Chopped Steak Salad with the tasy horseradish vinaigrette. TIP: The tables near the bar are now bar seating. Just ask the Maitre d' for a table in the bar section. Previously, these tables were not bar seating and I learned it the embarrassing way, but thankfully they have changed the policy. read more

I've dined here twice now, and both experiences were phenomenal enough that I felt the need to tell a manager how excellent everything had been. Special accolades to my servers from each visit (and a sincere apology if I misspell their names), Chassidy and Semma respectively, both of whom blew me away. My water glass was never empty, service was always friendly and never pushy, and at the end of my second visit Semma asked to give hugs to both me and my guest. It adds so much to a meal when your server can genuinely bring a smile to your face, and neither of them disappointed. The food is a diverse but still fairly safe array of choices, and all reasonably priced. The quality was excellent -- I had the sirloin tips the first time and the mustard-crusted chicken the second time. The cauliflower mash was surprisingly good, too, though I'll probably continue getting mashed potatoes as a matter of personal preference. Oh, and this is a top contender for "best free restaurant bread." The parmesan-chili dipping oil that comes with it is top-notch. I could eat that stuff all day and take the whole entree home as leftovers. I'll be back, repeatedly. read more

Thought this was a huge coffee shop at first glance..."Joe's"...but heads up THIS IS A FULL RESTAURANT. This is a very tall, open restaurant. I liked the abstract decor. And the server was excellent. He clearly expressed that the restaurant prides in its customer service and tending to any needs that diners have, including GF and allergies. He said that they'll even go across the street to purchase a snickers bar if that's truly what a child can only eat. I mean, with the commitment he had to enhancing our dining experience, I believed him. Not an extensive menu, but it had a variety of options I don't think I'd find elsewhere. It was unique in that way--you're not just going to come here for a pepperoni pizza or chicken and broccoli. Upon taking our order, we were served bread squares with a cheesy garlic dipping oil. I love free bread and the fact that it was more than your average olive oil and pepper dip, it was a winner. I had ordered a Cranberry Roasted Chicken and I really liked it! I liked how the cranberry sweetened the chicken while retaining the roasted flavor and whatever it was lying on top of (some sort of mashed vegetable wrapped in tortilla?) was delicious! My boyfriend Steven Le Babe ordered the Molasses Braised Pork Shank and yes, just as he had hoped, the meat DID fall off the bone nicely. Yelp really needs to allow you to add half-stars.... This is a 2.5. I tried NYAJ for the first time last night with two friends, and it was decidedly "ok." I'm definitely glad someplace new took over from Macaroni Grill, but I can't help but feel (after just one visit, mind you) that this was still a missed opportunity. The dining space itself is well done. There's a clean, modern, hipster vibe to it, and the last vestiges of Macaroni Grill are gone (a good thing). We didn't go to the bar, but from what I saw it looked like it'd be a good place to watch a game or meet friends. The menu is modern american, which if you don't know basically means "schizophrenic." There's pizza, steak, burgers/sandwiches, pasta, seafood- there's a definite "jack of all trades" thing going on here. It's influences include latin, asian, caribbean, italian, japanese, french, and cajun cuisine- and those are just the ones I remember seeing off the top of my head. I won't knock the place for spreading the love around like that as much as it does since I know many people appreciate menus like that, but it's never really been my thing; I'll always prefer a more focused menu. The food we ordered was mostly well done. To start we had mango shrimp spring rolls and buffalo caribbean chicken tenders. The spring rolls were easily our least favorite item, as they were basically tasteless. The chicken tenders, though...wow. I think they were the best I've ever had: they were sweet and tangy, had a bit of heat to them, and were fried perfectly. Definitely don't miss out on those. As an entree I had the braised short rib, which ultimately was forgettable. And it's a shame, because the foundation of a great dish was there- the rib was perfectly cooked, as was the bed of risotto it was placed atop. But the cherry sauce it was served with was barely present- which is sad because what little of it there was was delicious. Given more sauce to coat the rib in, I would've been really happy. Lastly, we had a piece of key lime pie (my favorite dessert) which was great- I'd put it right alongside Mortons' key lime pie, which is high praise. Our waiter also comped it, which is always a good thing. Said waiter, incidentally, was friendly and knowledgable, but inattentive. I'm never too harsh on the service at newly-opened restaurants because there will always be growing pains, but it's still worth noting that water was left unfilled, finished plates were left on our table, and in general things were pretty slow. (We were comped a dessert, remember.) Hopefully this will be sorted out by my next visit. And I will be making another visit- there's more than enough reason for me to want to try NYAJ again. With a few bumps smoothed out, I think this place could be a solid option, and I'm interested in seeing how the rest of their menu is. Town center has a lot of good options; hopefully Joe's will turn out to be one of them. read more

My husband and I used to live in Reston, and used to go to this restaurant quite a bit. Until today, we had never had a bad meal there. Imagine our great disappointment when we made a special trip to visit our old haunt, ordered the pizza, and both got aching stomachs for our trouble. We ordered the large 2 topping pizza with sausage and red opinions. While they put enough red onions on it to kill someone, there was scant sausage on the pizza. One slice actually had only TWO pieces of sausage. Very chintzy and cheap. For 17.99, that pizza should have had bountiful toppings on it. But more importantly, it should have had SOME flavor. The reason for the two stars is the combination of a really bland and tasteless pizza (which is very difficult to accomplish) coupled with a rather rude host the young man who greeted and seated us? This man gave us several orders such as " move this way" (over to the hostess stand) and then "follow me" while gesturing his hands. There was no "please," "welcome," "how're you doing?" Just short orders. The host and hostess make the first impression of the restaurant. While the hostess was very friendly and personable, the young man was not. I do not know his name, but he was skinny with dark hair. Perhaps this young man needs additional training if he is going to be engaging the customers. This is still a great restaurant... one bad experience out of a bunch is evidence of that. But the same way I write great reviews... I also think it is important to call out when the food and/service is subpar. The pizza was the worst we have had in quite some time. read more

I want one of these in Fredericksburg! NOW! Tuesday a friend and I met here for lunch. I arrived at 11:45, 45 minutes before my friend was due to arrive and I was seated!!! I was dumbfounded. And I didn't even order a drink. The server was incredibly nice, told me a little about Joe's (this was my first visit)--hearing it has a from-scratch kitchen made me smile--told me about some of the offerings, and made sure I was comfortable. (The hostess was also very sweet. The layout at the front is awkward because guests can't see the welcome podium, but the hostess keeps an eye out for diners.) My friend ordered the miso salmon and I the chicken Waldorf--both delicious.$14 for the salad was a bit much, but I'd order it again because it was good. The cheese and onion focaccia with cheese, garlic, and red pepper oil alone is worth a visit. Omigosh. I wanted a whole loaf. Even though it was a busy lunch time, we never felt rushed. Went there for the first time last night against a friends recommendation. He had been there twice before and was disappointed in the food both times. But we went there anyway to form our own opinion. It was a Saturday night and it was packed. Our server was great...friendly and not too overbearing. We got the lettuce wraps as our appetizer & I really liked them. Would definitely order those again. I got the mustard chicken entree with risotto and broccoli. I really liked that as well. My friend got the scallops and said they were very tasty. I must admit that after the wraps and bread/oil you get, I was already full before my entree came. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because they really pack you in. I could hear everyone's conversations around me....the tables are so close together. Service and atmosphere are excellent for grabbing a drink or happy hour. I was disappointed with the overall quality of the food. My wife's beet salad only had a few beets and was mostly lettuce. The cheese steak egg rolls were swimming in grease and could use a little seasoning or dipping sauce to add flavor. I ordered a medium-rare steak frites and got a cut that was half well done and half medium. It also tasted like beef from grass-fed cows, which is always a little gamey and unpleasant to me. read more
