Honestly, the appetizer options were pretty blah so we stuck to the bread and dip and both went with the chicken and shrimp bowls. The menu was not extensive nor unique, but had a good balance of vegetarian, meats, and seafood. The bowl was quite delicious, though I will never understand why gravy dishes are served with tail-on shrimp!! I came to this restaurant in a mid afternoon. It was not busy but the hostess wanted to have us sit in the cramped corner. We asked to change, but why use up the bad spots during non-peak hours? The food was fine and had more non burger options than I expected. Our waitress was attentive and quick to refill drinks. Located across from Reston Town Center, Not Your Average Joe's offers quite a spacious interior with beautiful decor and an extensive menu. I've been twice for lunch and each time they've been super busy, so I definitely recommend making a reservation (for lunch) if you know your plans ahead of time. Each time I went, our servers were very friendly and helpful. They start you off with a complimentary bread basket along with an oil-cheese-something else dip - very tasty. First time I went, I had their seasonal (I believe) Butternut Squash Risotto and I really enjoyed it, while my friends felt it was too much on the sweet side. Second time, I went for the Chicken Picatta and it wasn't bad at all but it could've been better. It was a good size though. While I liked our waiters every time, on my last visit the service at the hostess stand could have been better. I had a reservation and I was waiting on a customer ahead of me to check-in. There were 2 hostesses and it took BOTH of them to be chatty-Cathy with the customer ahead of me while I was waiting ignored. Then BOTH of them left the hostess stand without even acknowledging that I was still waiting - no hello, no nothing. Finally a gentleman employee must've seen my annoyed face expression and he apologized and advised that someone will be with me. Service was subpar, aside from the host being super kind to us. Our waiter was not the best and couldn't understand that we wanted 2 separate checks. We all ordered our food, and everything was extremely salty, or EXTREMELY overcooked. My chicken in my jambalaya was so dry it became stringy and tough. My friends sirloin tips were also the same, and he ordered medium rare but it came out gray and overcooked almost not chewable. Another one of us got a burger medium rare and same problem it was gray, dry and overcooked. The penne alla vodka was spicy? which we weren't too sure about and the pasta tasted like tap water as if it was left out long after it was already cooked. The sauce had no resemblance to penne alla vodka. Not sure if we were just there on a bad day but we did not have a pleasant experience at all and most definitely will not return here. How is it possible everything on our table was overcooked? Every order we had was not great at all. All of our food even came out cold. The cheese on the pasta never even had the chance to melt, it was just a slab of cheese on top. Presentation was okay but it was not pleasant to eat. read more

I really like Not Your Average Joe's. I realized, in uploading my second photo of the same exact salad, that apparently I very specifically like the Cobb salad also. lol I like the open layout, I like the service, in fact today, our server's name was Grace and she was ridiculously sweet, so thanks for that! I like the food (yes more than just the salad) and I like the ease of getting to this restaurant vs having to pay to park in RTC. The tuna wontons (also pictured) are money btw. I had lunch with a couple of picky eaters today and they were all happy, so this is a good place for everyone. My husband and I have been here several times. It's sort of a go to when we don't want to spend a lot on dinner but don't want to cook. The food is, well, average though it is of better quality than your standard chain restaurant. It's consistently average, not bad, but doesn't wow like some of the other Reston staples in the town center. However, the prices are lower than average and the burgers are pretty good, which makes it a fairly decent place to grab a bite in the area. In general the mixed drinks are pretty spot on, the decor and ambiance is nice and we have consistently had friendly service. Though, sometimes it is hard to get the final check - we have had to flag down our waiter a few times. read more

From the comfy booth, the interesting and varied menu, to the friendly and attentive service, NYAJ's checked all the boxes. We will return as often as we can to this Bethesda location. I was totally loving on all of the lighting when we walked into Not Your Average Joes. The overall feel I got from the decor was industrial chic. You would never guess, that this had once been a Macaroni Grill. We were greeted with smiles and baskets of bread. We were given a mixture of grated cheeses & red pepper flakes for dipping. A server came around and drizzled some olive oil over the cheese mixture. This was probably my favorite part of the meal! We had a very friendly server, but no one in our party can recall, if she ever told us her name. She also wasn't the most attentive. We had planned on ordering 2 appetizers for the table, but she only took the order for one, and scurried away. As she exited the kitchen, my husband got her attention and placed the order for the second app. The same thing happened after we ordered the wine for the table. There were other drink orders that were ignored. We were able to order those on the server's next trip back to the table. The appetizers were delivered timely. We decided on the Nacho Average Nacos and the Thai Chicken Lettuce Wraps. While fresh and large, the Wraps lacked the key elements that one would expect from a Thai dish, the sweet & spicy! The chicken was on the dry side, but the still wet lettuce leaves did help with that. The nachos were stacked tower-like, making it a little messy to eat. The chicken was a little spicy, but it was the corn relish that really lended the flavors that made this dish stand out. I ordered the Smoked Gouda Grilled Cheese. I took the waitresses suggestion, and added bacon. It was the apple and onion relish that was the star of this meal. The sandwich was great, but the relish was too wet. By the time I was finished with the first half of my sandwich, the other side was too soggy to handle. My son had the grilled chicken and fries. He wouldn't eat the chicken, because it was too dry and had and overly "grilled" taste. The fries were left behind because they were oily and overcooked. My hubby ordered the Pesto Pappardelle, but it lacked the robust pesto flavor that he was looking for. As for the rest of the family, no one seemed overly excited with their meals. Hoping that dessert would redeem this visit, I ordered the carrot cake. I shared with my son and father in law. I'm sure that it was freshly baked somewhere, but it tasted like a boxed mix. I wasn't impressed. My hubby ordered the "Peanut Butter Thing" - Joe's claim to fame-peanut butter and chocolate chunks folded into vanilla ice cream and rolled in oreo cookie crumbs. Even the waitress wasn't sure if it was the most popular dessert, just because it sounded cool, or if it actually tasted good. Lots of parking in the attached lot, even if the entrance still awkwardly faces the road. Bar on your left as you come in, hostess ahead on the right. Service was earnest but kinda disorganized-- anytime a beverage or food item arrived, we had to redirect to the correct recipient. They were happy to box up our leftovers, and made sure we knew where they were set down so we wouldn't trip leaving our seats. Menu is extensive, with multiple customization options for diners with dietary restrictions. TVs over the bar are still visible to some tables. Table foccacia was thick and a little doughy for my taste, but I liked the herbed crust as well as the garlic and red pepper flakes in the dipping oil. Thai chicken lettuce wraps were huge enough to serve as several side salads or one moderately dressed entree salad, and I appreciated that they used Bibb lettuce as well as freshly chopped jalapenos. Chicken dumplings had a nice sear, and were served in a balanced soy dipping sauce with green onion brushes to garnish. The Caesar side salad was equal parts Parm and dressed greens, and the limp triangles of pizza dough served poorly as crouton replacements. Hand-cut fries were crispy enough, with skin left on the way I like them. The cook on the salmon, braised short rib, and pork were great, but the seasoning on the former two were overly aggressive. The chili powder on the beef and in the mashed sweet potatoes was added pretty liberally. No problems with the pesto or roasted brussels sprouts. Polenta was very rich, but the molasses braised shank and green apple relish cut it nicely; this was the favorite dish of the evening, followed by the sage pecan salmon. Prices are quite fair compared to other American restaurant chains, so we'll eventually return to try more menu items: maple bourbon Manhattan, house-made lemonade, mango shrimp spring rolls, super crunch salad, sesame hoisin salmon salad, Mona Lisa salad, smokehouse jambalaya, rosemary skewered scallops, Vietnamese salmon, romesco rockfish, turkey meatball strozzapreti, Parmesan-cauliflower mash. read more

I will say this time my experience was a lot better while dining at Not Your Average Joes. I was invited back and this time I took my husband here to dine with me on a cold winter evening. We are in the middle of moving so not much food in the house so it worked out perfectly. We opted to sit in the bar area. There were other groups with small kids. I assume it was so the parents could enjoy the happy hour prices and still be at a table. We orders guac and chips to start off with. The guac was flavorful and was a great starter. The chips were a little on the oily side so not the best for me but my husband didn't care. For our main course I ordered the rockfish which was pan seared. It came with chick pea fritters and small salad with olives. The fritters were just ok but the fish was cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the backyard burger with fries. His burger was cooked to his liking and it also was flavorful. I would come back for those meals that my husband and I both enjoyed. Happy hour prices during the week were available in the bar area to include draft beer, mixed drinks and other appetizers. Really enjoyed dining at this trendy place in Reston. I ordered the Sole Meunière. Points for me for trying to choose the healthy option. I liked that I was able to choose something on the menu that was delicious, yet something my stomach wouldn't beat me up for after. It was a big price of fish on a bed of sautéed kale, some potatoes, roasted cauliflower and delicious capers. My friends got the scallops which were absolutely delicious. However the piece de resistance was actually their garlic/olive oil and bread that they serve at the beginning. Couldn't get enough of the stuff! The service was okay, the waiter did change the plates when my friends' couscous (which comes with the salad) had bacon on it, which they don't eat. read more

Have been here several times for both lunch and dinner since it opened and never got around to writing a review because I am conflicted.... It is a beautifully redecorated space from the previous chain Italian restaurant. NYAJ clearly invested heavily and nearly everybody is very friendly and conscientious. The problem is the food at Not Your Average Joe's is quite average. You end up paying fairly high prices for pretty average food. Good, but not great. We have had numerous dishes including: -Sirloin Tips - Enchiladas - Jambalaya - meatloaf -Chicken Piccata However, the focaccia bread they give you is very tasty. So, decent food at higher prices with nothing that makes you say 'Wow, I need to go back and eat that again!' Makes it tough for me to give more than 3 stars. That said, if you like typical American fare that is consistent could do worse than NYAJ. Update: Went back for dinner and this is your average Joe's. Nothing special...everything is just ok. Quite possibly the best part is the bread and the dipping oil they give you. Service can be on the slow side but I'm not sure if that's because everything is made from scratch. read more

My husband and I finally gave this restaurant a try. Once we walked in, we were immediately welcomed and got seated, by the bar area. We had a great time and our server Sema, she was wonderful & super friendly, very attentive! We ordered buffalo Caribbean chicken tenders appetizer, pork tenderloins and blue cheese burger. And homemade lemonade (peach) and beer. The chicken tenders were delicious, not spicy, it was crispy and drenched in sauce. Pork tenderloins was ok, I asked to be cooked medium but it was fully cooked and meat was on the dry side. Burger was good, cooked to medium just what we asked. I got homemade lemonade (peach flavor), it was refreshing...I enjoyed it! But the peach flavoring tasted artificial. I would give this restaurant 5 stars for service but since our food was average, I'll minus a star from the 5. But I'll probably go back to try their other dishes. read more

When the best part of your sandwich is the bread..... First, though, my wife and I started with the Bang Bang shrimp. This dish gets its name from the spiciness it's supposed to have, but Joe's version has no kick at all. The sauce tastes like pink tinted mayo. I'm no sure where the Sriracha went, but it wasn't into this dish. I ordered the Caesar Chicken Wrap. The wrap wasn't the traditional thin wrap, but rather like Naan (Indian bread). The bread was delicious. However, the chicken was dry, the Caesar dressing almost tasteless, and if there was Romano cheese it did a very good job of hiding. My wife has a hamburger, and said it was fine. And while I know prices have gone up everywhere, it was a lot of money relative to the quality. read more

Our waiter Mason was the nicest, friendliest waiter I encountered in the Reston area during my work trip. He was very knowledgeable of the menu and made great recommendations. The menu had many different options from tacos to meatloaf to seafood to pasta. So many things to choose from. I ordered the pitcher of Sangria. It was a fall special sangria and was tasty. My entree was the sirloin tips and instead of spinach I ordered Brussel sprouts. Everything was really good. My coworkers ordered the meatloaf entree and they really enjoyed their meal as well. The service was not even bare minimum. They brought out bread(which was complimentary) and it was cold, not just room temperature. The food is priced higher than the quality or certainly the taste warrants. We never received a drink refill, even though one person had an moth Glass for half the meal. Someone ordered sweet potato fries as one of their sides (which is a $1 up charge) and did not receive it with the meal. Upon asking, they brought sweet potato fries, and we were charged the up charge as well as a charge for an extra side dish. I regret choosing this place and would recommend avoiding. I visited NYAJ again recently for the first time in a few months. The new menu was inviting. I was starving and didn't have any food in the refrigerator so I decided to try a few dishes I hadn't tried before, to go. I ordered the wedge steak salad. OMG. The best wedge salad with steak I've ever had in my life. Bar none. The dressing was delicious too. Usually eat these salads by cutting in half. I ate it all in one sitting. I told myself that it was because the lettuce would not be as crisp but the truth was it was too delicious. Second order salmon with pesto sauce. So it sounded funky but the waitress recommended. I opened the box and didn't think it looked appetizing. The idea of salmon on sweet potatoes was not a hit with me. So I separated them and put on a new plate. Then I drizzled the pesto over the cut up salmon and reheated. Again... WOW. The salmon with that nutty pesto was so wonderful. I could eat that pesto mixture on a hundred things all day long. It was just delicious. The sweet potatoes were good too, not just in the same bite with the salmon. I might switch out the sweet potatoes for something that goes better with fish.... but LOVED this AMAZING DISH. Lastly I had the fettucini with shrimps and scallops. So everything was awesome but the sauce. They called the sauce a creamy vodka sauce but something was missing. It tasted like a creamy champagne sauce and I was not digging it. I could not fathom wasting the delicious seafood so I actually washed off the protein and threw it in a frying pan with butter and garlic and then threw it on a new bed of pasta with just butter. Then I added 2 TBSP of shaved Parmesan and it was really amazing. So I have to downgrade one star for the bad sauce on the pasta. I think that scallops have a unique taste that benefits from a simple treatment. Not a heavy champagne like cream sauce that covered up the great seafood instead of punching it up. Anyway, way to go NYAJ for coming up with some amazing and unique dishes at a price that won't break your budget. I'll be back for both the wedge and the salmon as many times as I can afford it! Came for a pretty late lunch and drinks. Place was pretty empty, which was to be expected. Server was amazing - very friendly and funny. 5 stars to her. Food was great. Pretty standard but hit the spot and pretty large portions. Can't really go wrong there. Got the Thai lettuce wraps which were presented differently than we expected but also was a lot more food than expected. (I'm used to seeing them as finger style wraps) Also got the sausage pizza and the Buffalo chicken one. Both were great. The dough and crust were delicious. read more

I ordered a Turkey club as it was so hot outside, I thought a cold sandwich? - highly disappointing. White bread (barely toasted) with 2 slices of turkey and a "house salad" between the bread. The service was very good. No complaints there. This was my third time here, the food is bland every time, and the vibe is just dull. You park on the side, walk in. There is a large bar area which does a great happy hour. 4-6pm. And they have bud lights, etc for $3. Our waitress was very attentive to us. We were in and out in about 1.5 hours. They have free WIFI because people had their computers and were working. Food portions are relatively decent size too (I was surprised at their prices. Great American -style restaurant! Lots of options like jambalaya, seafood, and vegetarian. They have a delicious, complimentary oil/cheese dip with bread but beware- they try to upcharge you for extra dips. This dip is delicious on its own, you don't need the extra. I got the tuna poke bowl and it was good! Not great, but I was impressed with the size of the dish and amount of tuna they gave me. My sister-in-law got a chicken dish and the chicken portion was massive. Price range is $$- not too expensive, but at least $20 per entree. Solid choice for a large group too! read more
