Didn't see her again after taking our sushi order. Another staff member stepped on my wife's foot while putting a plate down on our table, and didn't apologize. Note, I've ordered take out here before and the staff was quite polite and friendly, although I usually come in uniform and am white passing. My wife is black, and with the experience she's had being ignored by servers for this reason, it made her extremely uncomfortable and we left with our leftovers quickly. Tipped 10%. If you choose to sit at the sushi counter, you'll battle it out for 6 spots. The menu is expansive, and features creative and uniquely named rolls with small pics and smaller descriptions that hurts ol' eyes. I ordered the Unagi Crunch Roll (3.5 stars), the Black Tiger Roll (4.0 stars), and some Bulgogi (2.5 stars). Upon walking in there was a sign that stated wait to be seated. We stood there for a good 2-3 minutes before anyone came to seat us. We were seated outside as we were a group of 5. The waiter asked for the drinks we desired in which we ordered 4 waters and 1 Dr. Pepper. After ordering we still did not receive any drinks. As we observed there was sushi that was made sitting on the counter for a good 10 minutes. And after 15-20 minutes still no water or any drinks. We had told a passing waiter we still did not receive any drinks and she said she would check on it for us. So far nothing. The tables were not that filled to the brim so its not that packed to be busy. And the water arrives after 20 minutes, and the waiter told us our food is ready so we assume that the food that has been sitting on the counter for the past couple of minutes is ours. He comes back out with miso soup and no Dr. Pepper in sight. We polish off the miso soup, and after the udon comes for my cousin - all the sushi rolls start coming out one after another. Afterwards all we cared about was tasting and demolishing everything on the plate. The fried onion pieces were tasty with the sushi. We ordered 7 sushi rolls in total - 2 dragons, Bill Gates, Ninja, Super Boston, Super Albacore, and Vampire Killer excluding the plain Udon and Eel Hand roll ordered by my younger cousin. I personally felt this place deserved 3 1/2 as the food is good, decorative and tastes good. It was really just the wait that got us a bit wondering whats going on. Our waiter also kept disappearing to the back so it was hard to really ask for anything. We were still a bit hungry and luckily we had ordered a Dragon to go so we got to order one more roll - Scallop Lover as he dropped by. New glossy menus were placed before us...with much more expensive lunch prices than the last time we were there. ($10.99 chicken terayki lunch is a bit steep.) I think the rise in prices has really affected customer volume. Since my last visit the quality of food has significantly improved. At the last visit the quality of the food - especially the buggy salad was subpar. They kinda had thrown it all together and just placed an orchid on top like that made it first class. Not so. This time though, the chicken was yummy, crispy veggie tempura was pretty nice, the salad was fresh and the Cali roll wasn't bad. Also, they were offering 10% off Bento lunches for January so $9.95 was a bit better. I also appreciate that they have gone green on the patio. Venus fly-trap plants are now in the base of the large plant containers. Great way to control bugs without any pesticides. My best friend loves Nozomi's so she's always taking me here when she's in desperate need of some sushi. Not gonna lie, the prices are a bit steep and you can definitely find cheaper sushi options elsewhere; they're just farther. If you're a UCSD student like me, you would probably be coming here for the convenience since it's just right down the street. The rolls here are definitely addicting! I love their Super Crunch roll - I just wish it wasn't so expensive for so little. They offer their sushi options at 3/4 of the roll if you're looking to pay less. I believe their happy hour is from 4-6pm 30% off special rolls. If it wasn't for the prices, I would come here more often. The house sake had a good sweet finish which is better than most I've had. The service was ok as I had to ask for a water refill and soy sauce after my food was brought. The outside seating was mostly comfortable, had to move due to leaking over my seat, and liked the big screen with the basketball game on. My sister and I came here for dinner the other day and ordered the chirashi salad (5/5), yellow storm (as recommended by our waiter, 4/5), edamame, tempura, and wings (2/5). If you come here for lunch or dinner, you should definitely order the chirashi salad! They give huge, generous portions + it tastes reallyyyyy good with whatever sauce they paired it with. Unfortunately, parking is limited/sucks and the restroom is around the corner of the building... it's super filthy. It's right beside the kitchen area and smells like trash, plus the lock on the stall is broken so they put up a sign saying you should also lock the door of the entire restroom. If you're a UCSD student, in La Jolla to shop, staying at the Marriot, going to Sea World, etc., this is a nice and friendly spot to go to when you have a craving for sushi and chirashi/hwae dup bap bowls. The restaurant itself is a small, charming place with a few outdoor seating and some small to medium sized tables inside. They have some of the freshest sashimi (We got the sashimi boat) and the chirashi bowl or the hwae dup bap bowl is outta this world. Nothing is skimped, it comes in a huge bowl (I got the small and it was huge), and it is finished off with a sprinkle of edible flowers. Awesome presentation. Also, the kakuni pork belly. I die. Melt in your mouth porkgasm. The rolls are also really tasty. There really is something for everyone here. If you're not into raw fish, there is a lot of alternatives here, from Korean to Japanese entrees. One of the most disappointing ramen we ever had. We decided to try this place since it was so close to UCSD, but we probably won't return. We ordered a shiro sushi roll and 2 black garlic oil ramen. The sushi was mediocre and wasn't anything special. However, the ramen was worse than mediocre. The toppings looked fine, but when we actually ate them, we were dissatisfied. The bamboo was hard and stringy like they just poured some from a old container. We were surprised by how little taste the mushroom and bean sprouts had. It was weird chewing something with texture but no taste. The one piece of meat that was in the ramen is not like the typical chashu. It was actually grilled and edges were burnt. It didn't have the softness we enjoy from chashu. The broth was supposed to be black garlic oil, but didn't have the satisfying darkness and richness we had from other black garlic oil ramen. It actually left a oily bitter aftertaste. One of the ramen was actually much more bitter than the other even though we ordered the same thing. It was unpleasant to eat and we didn't finish. We asked the waiter about the bitterness of the ramen and they said they probably added too much garlic in one of them. We got half off for one ramen in the end. The only thing that was probably decent from the ramen were the eggs. However, the ramen from this place falls short of the quality of other ramen in the area. I would never have known this place existed, were it not for a co-worker. It's kind of tucked away behind some other restaurants in the little strip mall, so you have to know where you're going (or that it's even there) to find it. But when you do find it, it's pretty cute. They have a really nice outdoor seating area in addition to the small indoor dining room. As it was hot as blazes the day we went, we chose to sit inside, rather than risk heat stroke on the patio. Apparently the co-worker we went with is something of a regular - maybe even a friend - of the family that owns this restaurant. He goes so often they know what he'll order before he has to say anything, and he has a dish named after him on the menu. That's devotion. Because I and the other girl with us were new, though, we had to take some time to review the menu. It's your standard Japanese-restaurant fare, with bowls, rolls and soups on offer. Our co-worker took the liberty of ordering salmon sashimi, and then got his "regular" meal, which was some kind of Paleo-like curry. I ordered the Tempura Udon, and our other co-worker ordered one of the special sushi rolls (the Dynamite, for those keeping track). The salmon sashimi, when it came out, was super impressive-looking. Seriously - take a peek at the picture of the presentation. It was a bit over-the-top for four pieces of raw fish. The tempura udon was huge (and probably the wrong choice for a steamy day, but I never claimed to be very smart). They give you a lot of tempura, which I can appreciate, and the broth had an interesting flavor. Not bad, necessarily, but...hmm. It was very mushroom-y. And I love mushrooms, but it tasted like it was water that they had used to reconstitute dried mushrooms. Again, not really bad, but just a bit overpowering. There definitely was enough food in that bowl - between broth, noodles, mushrooms and other mix-ins - to fill me up, but I couldn't really do more than a few spoonfuls of the broth. Not because of the heat, because of the intense flavor. The special sushi roll that the other girl got was also super-impressive looking - there were just things all over the place - and she seemed to enjoy it. The service was good, though I can't know for sure if they were so attentive because our dining companion was a friend, or if that's how they normally are. For a large party we certainly had our food out to our tables at varying times, to the point where some people were still not served and others at the time were politely waiting to consume their last bites. I can honestly not tell you what we ordered but I can say the dish that stood out was the salad (picture attached). We really enjoyed the it and the portion was massive. You will certainly want to share it unless you get the small portion. I would've loved to have rated 4 stars but the waiter/waitress check-in/out situation was lacking. This is in no part the employees fault. We came before the lunch rush and when lunch time hit they were just flooded with a wait for seating. We came here for a late night dinner at 9pm on a Saturday night, they have a nice late night special for some menu items. Cheap appetizers and 30% off some sushi. The place also has an outdoor sitting area too under this cute patio with lights, it was very romantic :) could be a nice date place! Their portions are huge for the price! I ordered a Korean dumpling soup and was expecting to be an one person serving but this could of probably fed three people if you also order some small appetizers! Good flavor soup, could be a bit less salty but was good. The sushi rolls are huge portions too, the rice inside the rolls are not the best i have had but fish is fresh. The server was very nice, checked on us all the time and brought us sharing bowls for the soup. I am a total fan of this sushi restaurant. It is located behind Einstein Bagel and Starbucks. It is next to L&L Hawaiian Restaurant. The restaurant has a cute patio decorated with a nature theme. The inside is small with several tables. However, they have a lot of tables for a large party of 6-8. The food is really excellent and their presentation of the food is pretty!!! This place never seemed to ever disappoint me. When ever I go, I always order hwae dup bap (aka chirashi salad - rice, salad, sashimi, and the small orange eggs w/ the red spicy paste). The hwae dup bap is HUGE! It can feed up to 2-4 people and the best part about it is that it is ONLY $14!!. I love their super crunchy roll, washington roll, black tiger roll, kal guk su (green noodle seafood soup dish), any of their fried rolls, the brown rice rolls (this is the only place i know that has this), katsu with curry, etc. The sushi is all average size and fresh. The non sushi plates are BIG~ . Each of those dishes you could share with 2-4 people and they are no more than $11. The sushi rolls range from $7-15 dollars. They sell half and half combos for their sushi rolls which is a steal! During lunch and dinner on the weekdays, the place gets packed because it's around a lot of businesses and right near UCSD. The service is okay, especially when it is packed. When there isn't that many people, the service is good. I more experienced the service being better inside than outside. The chefs are all really nice. They really welcome you when you come in. They have a parking lot right in front of their restaurant; however there are only limited amount of spots reserved for their restaurant. You can park in the business parking lot; however, during the weekday typical business hour, the parking lot charges per hour. So remember to get your ticket validated. After hours and during the weekend, parking is completely free! They also have a happy hour from 4:30-8 (i believe..). They have discounts on sushi rolls and drinks. I came here with my friends after the Sea World. It's about 15 minutes away from the Sea World. It's right in front of Marriott hotel A very good location. I really like the outdoor patio area. Good for bigger groups. Servers are super friendly and fast. Great service. My favorite dish was the Lobster Roll. It has melted cheese on a roll. I'ver never seen/tasted anything like it. It kinda reminded me of Dynamite Roll, which is also one of my favorites but this was hands down, much better. Ahi Poke Salad was delicious. The first time I went here was back in 2014, and I wasn't impressed. This year my friend recommended that we'd go here so I reluctantly agreed deciding I'd give it another shot. I'm so glad I did! This place has REALLY stepped their game up and has now become my favorite sushi spot! They offer free edamame with a yelp-check in so that's one way to start. I usually go for the Bill Gates Roll which is a no-rice roll wrapped in cucumber and filled with delicious fresh fish. I'm also a huge fan of the Chirashi Salad! Definitely something you have to get here. The portion is HUGE! I got the 3/4th size and shared with my friend and it was definitely enough. Last night I also tried the Ahi Poke Salad and it is delicious! Something I plan to order each time I go. A huge portion and it consisted of lettuce, seaweed salad, shredded crab, and topped with ahi poke and sliced avocado. Plus it was only $13! woot woot. ALSO if you're worried about smelling like fried food after going to a sushi restaurant, fear not!
