You'll first take the train to the rental car center and then walk a long way and down the stairs or elevator to wait for a van. That's another 5-10 minute drive. It was crowded and slow. They do not hold your reservation if your flight is delayed. Our flight was delayed by 4 hours so of course we were late picking up the vehicle. Then, they decided to have a car available but of course it was an insane upgrade of an additional $500. The worse part is that the location is off the airport and to even get to the shuttle was an eventful journey and they take a long time to pick you up. Some people that were at the shuttle stop had been waiting for 45 minutes already. I will never be utilizing their services again. read more

Fine if you are willing to compromise to save money. If you want an easy or fast experience, don't choose NU Car Rentals. This rental facility requires a shuttle from the rental car center. It's not a huge deal, but not super convenient. Shuttle seemed to run on a regular 15 minute schedule. Wait for a car was insanely long, with only 5 people ahead of me in line I think it took an hour to be helped. I had booked the cheapest option -- a "suppliers choice" car, so was pretty much prepared for anything. They told me I was getting a Mercedes Sprinter Van. I pretty much laughed out loud. It was all just a sales ploy to make me "upgrade" from that and pay double what I initially paid, to "upgrade" to a crappy small car. I declined the upgrade and at the last minute they said ok never mind we will give you a small suv. Just silly games they play trying to make a quick buck. I honestly don't think they even had a sprinter van on their lot. After a painful time waiting and almost being scammed, I actually really enjoyed my rental car, nothing was wrong with it, and I ended up needing to extend my rental by a day. It was a reasonable cost to extend which was nice. Drop off was easy and the shuttle back to the airport was waiting for me. Would I recommend Nu Car Rentals? Had NO idea where to go, had to ask another car company employee where the pick up was. Got there and waited about 1/2 hour for the van to pick us up. On the way to the office, which was another 20 minutes or so from the airport (in an unsavory part of town where there was actually a shooting there during our stay), the driver told us how horrible AZ drivers are, they won't let you merge, they run red lights, and the younger drivers are the worst with speeding and changing lanes, etc. He made us so paranoid to drive, it was ridiculous. Then the girl who checked us in was so incredibly rude, and we could hardly hear her over the extremely LOUD country western music that was playing in the office. We took videos and pictures of the vehicle to make sure they wouldn't try to say there was damage or a mess inside the car, we felt they were the type of company to do that to keep the deposit (which we still haven't gotten back on our credit card, and it's been over a week). Misleading Location and Inconvenient Process. When I made the reservation, the pickup location was listed as Phoenix Airport, so I booked it without hesitation. Unfortunately, it turned out to be very misleading. Upon arrival, and after the tram ride to car rental we had to go through some hassle just to get to the pickup site. We had large, fully packed checked bags and had to drag them down a long walkway, take an elevator, cross another walkway, and eventually ended up in what seemed like a secluded passenger lot, not what you'd expect for a standard airport pickup. Doing all this in the Arizona heat was not pleasant. After a five-minute wait, a shuttle finally arrived and we were picked up by a very friendly driver named Garfield, whose positive energy helped lighten the mood. The shuttle ride to the offsite facility took about 10 minutes. Once there, I stood in line for about 20 minutes. While waiting, I started reading reviews and began to get nervous, as many people mentioned hidden fees and poor experiences. At that point, it felt too late to change plans. The staff member who helped me was very nice, but I didn't receive the car I expected. I had reserved a small SUV or a station wagon for a college move-in, but was given a Chevy Malibu instead. Surprisingly, we managed to fit a twin mattress inside with the rear seats folded down (minus the luggage, of course). To their credit, the check-in and check-out processes were smooth, and I did not experience any hidden fees, contrary to what many reviews warned about. In the end, it was a decent rental experience overall. Where do I even begin to describe how exceedingly bad my experience with NU Car Rentals was? There were so many things I hated about it that I'll have to make a numbered list. 1. The NU Car Rental office in Phoenix is not at the airport. After arriving at 10pm, in the dark, the email directed us to a dimly lit parking lot to wait for a shuttle that never came. 2. After a half hour of pointless waiting, we found a taxi that took us to their office, which is in probably the sketchiest part of Phoenix. Upon arriving in their dingy, dark-paneled office, we waited in line, listening to agents aggressively insisting to clients ahead of us that they *needed* to buy additional insurance. At that point, I started to look at the reviews for NU Car Rental in Phoenix, which averaged a 1. 3. Upon meeting our agent Andrew, he immediately aggressively told we *needed* to purchase additional insurance, because without it, we could be *forced* to pay *thousands* in damages for the *slightest* scratch. When we explained we had full coverage, he asked what our deductible was. Then we were required to put down a deposit of that exact amount. At this point, it's almost midnight. What else are we going to do? 4. Instead of a basic Chevy, Kia or Toyota, apparently the only car left on the lot was a Mercedes C-class. Now, I get that's a super-nice, expensive car. But after being threatened with thousands of dollars in damages for so much as a scratch, we frankly would have been much more comfortable with a cheaper car. Also we were totally unfamiliar with the dashboard and it was the middle of the night, so this vehicle was not optimal at all. 5. Returning the car was fine, and the shuttle took us to the airport in time. Unfortunately, I inadvertently dropped my driver's license in the shuttle, leading to another whole set of problems. I did receive a call from Michaela that the shuttle driver had turned in my DL. Those two are the only reason for the single star. That, and because we did get our unnecessary deposit back. 6. Upon calling the office, I was asked to mail them a prepaid, self-addressed envelope to send my DL back to me, because apparently they can't spare a $0.78 stamp. 7. I sent them a prepaid, self-addressed envelope to my address in Ogdensburg, NY --with tracking, because at this point I simply didn't trust them. They received it on January 3. They didn't ship it until January 14, after several calls to find out what was taking so long. 8. On January 17, the prepaid envelope, on which I had hand-written my Ogdensburg NY address, was delivered in Laguna Beach, CA - more than 2,800 miles away. I'm still trying to find out what happened and how, or if, I can get my DL back. In short, dealing with NU Car Rentals has been an almost complete nightmare. I would rather walk 2,800 miles than ever rent a vehicle from NU again. read more

They charged me full coverage and road side coverage (which I already have on my own). Nothing like a little "bait and switch". I used Priceline to reserve and rent the car through. The price was $309.98 total. This was paid on March 10th. I get to the car lot and was told the cost was $693.04 ($51.72 a day rental and included a $300 refundable deposit) for four days. I refused insurance and roadside assist since I already have both. Once I returned home an invoice emailed to me showing I owed an additional $376.83. My rental cost was increased by 122%. Car was driven 51 miles and returned with a full tank. Poor Customer Service and Concerning Rental Experience I rented from NU Car Rentals at 2327 E Van Buren St., Phoenix through Priceline and had a very disappointing experience. The counter employee, Alex, was very curt and immediately began trying to upsell me on upgrades and additional insurance that would have nearly doubled my reservation price. I explained that I already have full insurance coverage and a flawless driving record, yet I still felt pressured and was told I would be responsible for even the smallest ding or windshield chip. A $300 hold was also placed on my credit card. To make matters worse, he sent me outside without giving me the keys or directions, leaving me confused. Thankfully another employee, Alexis, kindly helped retrieve my keys and showed me where the car was located. The vehicle itself had multiple dents and was not even full of gas as stated. When I got to the counter, the agent told me that, for that kind of booking, all he had was a Sprinter van! (same line mentioned by another reviewer). I told him I had booked expecting a smaller vehicle. He then told me my only options were to pay an extra $246 since "they didn't have any vehicles at the booking rate" (booking.com quoted $356)! I was very disappointed and upset about the way this was handled. Of course, I was already tired and didn't see any options since your office is not near the other rental places, so I agreed to pay more. This "bait and switch" was especially galling since I saw a lot of different cars in your lot when I picked up my rental. Terrible Experience - Rude Staff & Poor Vehicle Condition This was one of the worst rental car experiences I've had. I arrived on March 24, 2027, for a one-day reservation in Phoenix, and the agent, Scott, started off friendly--but that didn't last. The moment I declined the $30 basic coverage (since I was using my own insurance), his attitude completely flipped. He became rude, unprofessional, and clearly annoyed. He started using scare tactics to try to pressure me into buying the coverage, which was completely inappropriate. Then he made a comment telling me to "make sure you take detailed pictures because we have." That didn't feel like customer service--it felt like a threat. On top of that, the car I was given (2024 Chevy Malibu) was in terrible condition. It was covered in scratches and dings all over, and the inside smelled bad. Honestly, it didn't feel like a vehicle that should even be rented out. Between the aggressive upselling, poor attitude, and low-quality vehicle, this place is not worth it. I booked NU car through Expedia to save $100.00. In stead it cost us another $400.00 for insurance we specifically told the agent we did not want. I have cut and pasted a previous review (see below) because their words exactly word for word mimic our experience. Trust me these guys are professional scam artist. Do not I mean do NOT ever use these guys. They lie and steal. "This may be the worst customer service experience of my life. I booked a car in PHX for three days through Expedia. I declined all insurance as my car insurance covers it. When we checked in with Karla at the front desk, we explicitly told her we didn't want any extra insurance coverage. We signed the paperwork and left. On the day we returned the car, I received a bill that included ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE for $23.97 and SUPPLEMENTAL LIABILITY INSURANCE for $42.78, plus additional taxes. I called the call center and spoke to two different supervisors. Both said the same thing: "You signed it, so we won't refund your money." I asked them how many times I needed to decline the coverage before they would honor my request. Their response? "We can request the video of your interaction with our agent to determine what was said." How creepy is that? When I asked if I could see the video, they refused. How am I supposed to trust their word that I agreed to something I very clearly declined? This was a last minute rental because the last one was closed by the time we left airport. I went on Expedia and booked in a crunch, and let me tell you they saved the day like Superman. The customer service was quick and easy and they had us in and out in less than 20 minutes. We were worried about the drop off process but they assured us it will be fine, we had to get to the airport by 430 am and their driver started the pick ups at 4 with a dropped box for keys. It was 3 other people besides us and the driver was very informative and gave great history of Arizona even at 4am. Wish I had more time on that bus because I'm sure he had more to share. They gave us a Tangerine color Dodge Charger with a hemi engine that made us feel like we were in a race car, it was such a smooth but stylish ride. 10/10 read more

First, the location is a shuttle ride from the car rental building. I booked a Mini Cooper EV online, when I arrived to pick up the car, the guy at the counter said the car was still charging and remarked it takes 8 hours to charge and only goes about 80 miles on a charge (i later checked on the Mini website and it said 212 miles per charge). He then recommended upgrading to an SUV and offered a 5 passenger or a 7 passenger SUV for a minimum of an additional $350 (the Mini I booked for $222). I wouldn't recommend renting from this company, and I don't think I'll rent from this company again. read more

He also asked me if I researched where to charge because it's hard to find a location. I was then informed there was only one gas vehicle available, which happened to be a Mercedes SUV. This was not a vehicle I needed or wanted, but due to a last-minute cancellation, it was presented as my only option if I wanted to leave with a gas car. During the pickup process, I was also strongly encouraged to prepay for a full tank of gas. The attendant emphasized how expensive gas was per gallon and suggested this was the best route to take. Even after declining, the charge still appeared and I was told the credit will be refunded if the tank was full. I ultimately filled the tank myself, and after driving the car for four days, it cost only $20 to refill, which confirmed that the prepaid fuel option was unnecessary and misleading. On top of that, there were multiple hidden fees and forced upgrades, and by the time everything was finalized, I ended up paying nearly three times the original estimate -- even though I had prepaid specifically to avoid surprises. Overall, the experience felt misleading and lacking transparency, from the reservation details to the unexpected charges at pickup. I regret not trusting the prior reviews I read, as my experience reflected many of the same concerns. It was very difficult to get to and we waited a long time for the shuttle. Its a scam. Bait you with a low price online, waste your time getting there, then hammer you with double the price. Once you spend an hour or two getting there from the airport (tram to shuttle to their shop miles from the airport) they then rely that you'll just take the car or be stranded in a pretty rough neighborhood. Thats when they will jam the insurance on you whether you want it or not. They get you to swipe your card, then surprise - a new price with insurance and extra fees even when you told them no to insurance. They run a script to pressure you into all the extra charges. We left as soon as we got a whiff of the racket and just took a rideshare to our hotel - 3 hours later and no car! Renting from one of the airport agencies we'd have been at the hotel in 30 minutes. We came into PHX on 02/06 and was given a car...the car already had low pressure in the tires because the display kept flashing. We put air in the tires, dash still stated the warning. 02/07, get in the car warming still on the dash...take it to put air in the tire and the warning still on the dash so we called and they told us to come and switch out the car...cool! Come switch out the car and the runners who bring you the cars were not able to help us communicate the proper return process Case in point, a young lady had to also bring her car back while we were standing waiting for the swap, THIS A KNOWN ISSUE! The desk agent was new and was not familiar with swapping out a car so she needed her co-worker to assist, OK FINE! The issue comes that they doubled charged us for a car instead of swapping the car out. How do you double charged someone for something that was not their fault? Warning - Avoid Renting from This Company Unfortunately, we didn't check the reviews before booking and were blindsided by the experience. Everything was prepaid, and we were told an additional deposit would be refunded upon returning the vehicle. However, we later found out this was actually a non-refundable extra fee. Echoing everyone else's reviews here: DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY. This is the Frontier Airlines of rental cars with all of the hidden fees they have. We should've known that our rental car price was too good to be true when we booked a 4-day rental for $75. For starters, accessing this rental car place from the airport is pretty complicated. You take the sky train to the rental car area, there are very limited signs for NU, so we were really confused about where to go, then you take a random elevator down to passenger pick up where there is a shuttle stop with zero information about shuttle pickup. We luckily didn't have to wait long, but when our shuttle did arrive, the driver was looking at his phone, looking up news articles and watching videos the entire time he was driving. I did contact customer support about this - we did not feel safe in this shuttle ride. It's about a 10 minute shuttle ride to the rental place. You can ONLY use a credit card to check out - you can't use a debit card. You have to put a $300 deposit on your card, and when we checked out, $527 dollars was put on my card. We asked what this was for and it was all these hidden fees - they automatically put a full tank of gas on the card, an extra driver fee (which we had to add because my partner booked the car and only had his debit card. Since they only take credit cards, I had to pay and because my name was on the card they had to add me as an extra driver???), and a bunch of other fees that added up to $527. Returning the car was quick and easy, and I was able to fill up for much less than they charged us for gas, so I believe the gas fee was refunded. We were still charged an additional $157 for who knows what. Don't be fooled by the low prices online! Choose the name brand rental places, it's worth paying extra online since you'll be charged the same amount by NU anyways. read more

I recently rented from NU Car Rental in Phoenix after booking a prepaid "mystery car" through Priceline. At the counter, I was told the vehicle assigned (a van) would be a "gas guzzler," and I was offered a smaller SUV for $29/day. What was not clearly explained was that this $29/day was in addition to the prepaid rate I had already paid through Priceline. I believed it was a substitute rate, not an added daily charge. Only after returning from vacation did I realize I had effectively doubled my daily rental cost. While the paperwork did show the total, the way the pricing was presented at the counter was unclear and sales-driven rather than transparent. I am not disputing that I signed the agreement. My concern is with how the pricing was explained. International travellers in particular should be very cautious about agreeing to any changes at the counter and confirm whether new rates are replacements or additional charges. I contacted NU Car Rentals promptly and was told they reviewed my situation with a corporate manager and a local manager, which determined I knowingly paid double the price for a smaller less-expensive vehicle. When I called Priceline, they said there was nothing they could do either. Clearly both organizations care little about quality customer service and more about coercively bilking their customers. With this expensive experience, I will definitely default to making zero changes at the counter in the future. I was skeptical, I had used this rental car place before both times assigned by Priceline. The first time (2 years ago) it was a bit frustrating because I didn't know their system and where to go and it was a bit confusing. The second time (Jan. 2025) caught the shuttles right away, car was perfect and all went very smoothly. If you're the type that is rigid and get stressed easy I don't recommend them, if you're not in a hurry and a relaxed type person, everything will be fine and it goes OK. read more

I Made a reservation online with Enterprise,... and they farmed me out to NU car rentals. I used my Chime card to make the reservation and then when I got there,... after quite a bit of hassle they refused to let me take the car. Stating that they don't take Chime, After they took the payment. Then because the office isn't in the airport, I had to take a shuttle bus to get there,.. it was after my scheduled pick up time and they refused to refund me the money. They left me standing outside of their office waiting for an Uber. Stay away from NU car rentals, they are literally thieves. If I could leave a negative star rating I would. read more

The wipers were cracked, dry, and about as useful as rubbing two sticks together in a hurricane. Driving through sheets of rain with zero visibility in a sketchy neighborhood? Chef's kiss. But wait -- it gets worse. The next morning we found out the tags were expired. And by "found out," I mean we got pulled over. Nothing screams "vacation relaxation" like flashing police lights because your rental car company can't be bothered to keep their vehicles legal. And the staff's response when I told them? Zero stars. Nu Car Rentals is run like a scam. I was charged $398.13 for "basic" insurance coverage. When I picked up the car, I thought I was opting for no insurance. I was given two options: basic or comprehensive. I was told that basic was the one where my personal auto insurance would cover liability. My understanding when I said "basic" was that I was opting out of insurance coverage. I thought the amount I was being charged was for the week's rental of the car. I was not given a third option, though I found out later that there was one, which was NO insurance. I found out later that my sister-in-law had already paid for the rental in full with credit card points. The cost of the insurance coverage that I did not want was OVER $100 MORE THAN THE COST OF THE RENTAL. This is not how honest businesses operated. This is how a con operates. I spoke with multiple customer service representatives and was told that all of this is on me. I asked why I was not given a third option, and I was told it was my fault for not asking for more information. They refuse to refund my money or negotiate a lower price for a service I did not want.
