I never had issues with Priceline, but recommending Nu Car Rentals is enough for me not to want to use either company. The rental company felt like a complete scam. I paid in full in advance, yet all they wanted was more money from me. The whole process was virtual with no accountability. I never received my car and had to Uber to my appointment. WORST RENTAL EXPERIENCE I'VE EVER HAD -- AVOID AT ALL COSTS I prepaid a rental through Hotwire for NU Car Rentals at Fort Lauderdale (FLL). The price looked cheap online, but it turned into a complete bait-and-switch. At pickup, I presented valid proof of my private auto insurance. The agent accepted it and wrote down my policy information, then immediately demanded an additional $200 for insurance that was never disclosed in my booking or invoice. When I asked them to show me any written policy stating this insurance was mandatory, they refused and said it "didn't matter." I again declined the undisclosed fees. At that point, the agent became hostile and cancelled/denied the rental outright. No car was released. I never took possession of a vehicle. They also refused to give me any written confirmation of the cancellation or any receipt showing a credit. I was simply told to leave. Hotwire later denied a refund, claiming this was the supplier's decision -- even though no service was ever provided. This company relies on: * Extremely low advertised prices * Forcing undisclosed "mandatory" insurance at the counter * Refusing service if you don't pay * Leaving you with no car and no documentation This is not a misunderstanding -- it's a pattern. NEVER and I mean NEVER rent from Nu Car Rental! I declined the additional Insurance and they charged me for this, charged me twice for an additional driver, hidden fees. The total of the additional fees totaled more than the cost of renting the vehicle. Tried to get reimbursed but these morally bankrupt thieves gave me the run around and I lost enough time. We only used them because there was a promotion through our capital one credit card and we now regret that decision. The agent checking us in (Andrew in PHX) is obviously paid commissions on up charging you on insurance you don't need and roadside assistance. On December 24, 2025, around 11:30 AM, we had a virtual interview to rent a car from Nu Rent Car in Miami. We made a reservation via Expedia, but my experience with Nu car rental was extremely disappointing and frustrating. We can't remember the female employee's name, but the rental conditions were overly complicated, the options were much more expensive than other rental companies, and the woman who assisted me was so mean. When the contract didn't go her way, she pushed us to cancel. The lady subjected me to high-pressure sales tactics, insisting I purchase additional services costing hundreds of dollars. They claimed my insurance was insufficient due to specific regulations and pushed for an extra $200 insurance fee. When I offered to adjust my insurance coverage, they misleadingly informed me it would take 3 months to take effect. Finally, she tried to charge us three times more than the original cost. I strongly advise against using Nu car rental. Their business practices, in my experience, were predatory and unethical, exploiting customers' vulnerable situations. We wasted 2 hours. What a bunch of scumbags! We ended up canceling the contract and went to Budget Rental Car instead. We signed the papers and rented a car in just 10 minutes. We strongly advise you against ever using Nu Rental Car. We have rented cars plenty of times in the US and all over the world, we generally had good or at least neutral experiences. I took a chance on a rental company that I wasn't familiar with because of the price. I regretted it after I read reviews. However, I prayed that our experience wouldn't be like most others, and thank God it wasn't. We didn't wait long for the shuttle and the pick up was quick. We rented from Orlando, FL. The two complaints I had was 1. after we got the keys we had to get the car inspected and they were trying to sell us vacation packages/time shares. I respect the hustle, but we had children with us and it was very hot out. It was annoying after I declined several times. 2. The car was set up for auto park brake. One day the park brake did not release and we tried everything to troubleshoot the issue. I called the emergency #, left a message, but no one ever called back. Actively promotes scare tactics to bully customers into paying for extra fees, insurance, and tolls you DO NOT NEED. All 3 attendants at the desk stated ALL toll roads were cashless (not true) and that the DAILY PENALTY charge for using the toll road without one of their transponders was $50 for EACH VIOLATION. All three attendants stated this to several customers while I waited to collect the car I rented. Dan IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM. Dan is RUDE, has a condescending attitude, and treats everyone with distain. The place reeks of Marijuana, which is also documented in previous posts on the NU website. Dan smokes cigarettes openly right in front of the car drop off, and the cars smell like an ashtray. Dan actually laughed and said he didn't care if I reported them to the corporate office. Not surprised since Dan is personally mentioned by name in previous posts on the NU website at this location, highlighting his toxic behavior. Since NU refuses to address Dan's behavior, their overwhelming negative feedback, and numerous ongoing complaints, I've reported NU the BBB to ensure customers are warned before they are are scammed. To top it all off, NU's actual location is offsite and the shuttle is so slow that we needed to take UBER to make our flight, even after arriving 2 1/2 hours early to return the car. Only charging us 350$ for a week in a dodge Ram pickup truck. Happily arriving at the car rental office, we then had our whole trip flipped upside down as they charged us an additional 650$. Yes , 650$ EXTRA. For this price I could've rented 2 corvette's for the week on TURO (a far superior car rental service). Their claims as to why it was 600$ extra was fees and insurance. They started by asking me which insurance I wanted , to which I replied , the cheapest one, to which NU told me since I am renting a "90,000$ car " I have to do the medium level insurance. I cannot stress to you how much of a SCAM this is. The car we rented BRAND NEW ON GOOGLE FULL LOADED WAS 65K MSRP. We quickly realized that's how they make their money as well, they upcharge you on a car and then say it's worth more than it is so you have to pay more on insurance as well. There is no way a 2022 dodge Laramie with no sunroof, scratches all over the car, a dented trunk, ripped seats and rear window that didn't work was worth 90K. Laughable honestly. Lastly, we asked for a military discount to which the lady working happily declined because we "already have the highest upgrade car" , which also means for some reason.. that we couldn't downgrade and save money. They also introduce scare tactics by telling you they have a GPS tracker and wheel sensors on the PICKUP TRUCK. they want you to drive a pick up truck like it's a tricycle. These people are rude, sneaky, dishonest and most importantly NOT interested in helping you get the most out of your vacation rental. Then a month later, when I returned the car, they charged my credit card again for $209. No explanation. I'm currently working through Expedia for the refund of the second charge, but they're useless, so avoid Expedia, too. The service was awful, too. We called NU (horspower) immediately and got the phone # to a locksmith to replace the key. We paid $400 for a new key. Then up on returning the car, I asked the guy who was inspecting if everything was ok. He said everything was great and to check out inside. Went inside to check out only to be told that the agent who gave us the locksmith phone # wrote in their system that we "refused their locksmith" and were being charged $500 for a new key. This is a complete scam. They gave us a different number that wasn't an approved locksmith only to be able to charge us more later. I cannot believe this. We arrived in SLC thinking we had already purchased the vehicle and that their might be slight extra costs, as there usually is with rental car companies. Never in my life have I rented a car for one price, get to the desk, and get charged triple what I have already paid. Without any prior notice or documentation they charged us almost $700 more than what I already put down. On top of that the staff member that was working with us was the least helpful person Ive come across. On top of that she was very rude. They told us the 2022 truck we had rented that had stained seats, dents to the front, back and bed of the truck, and a non functioning window in the back was worth $90k which meant we had to select the highest value insurance. The best part is that we asked to downgrade our vehicle and the price still somehow was going to be the same. On top of that my friend whose enlisted asked about military discounts and if they would apply. We didnt receive any discount because we already rented the highest tier vehicle. Nice way to treat people actively serving or veterans NU, very classy of you! To top it off, your not able to take the car on any type of dirt road of anything classified as "off road" because they have sensors apparently and will charge you extra. Weird stipulation considering the Midwest has a lot of dirt roads that are considered off road. I think this companies business model is poor and border line criminal. When we got to North Carolina, we had to wait 30 minutes for a shuttle to arrive and then another 15 minutes to get us to the rental place. I told the worker I did not need insurance. I had American Express and AAA. They only accepted the American Express for their car, but not if another car got damaged in an accident. I told him I had Allstate as well, but I did not have the insurance number on me and I would have to contact them later since it is Fourth of July. They told me once I left with the car I cannot get reimbursed the $75 they were charging me. I was able to get my Allstate number later that day and again they said they would not reimburse me. Pre-paid for the rental and when my parents arrived at the counter, the car was not ready, so they were offered a luxury vehicle in its place. They were charged $300 for the upgrade, plus $77 for "pre-paid" gas and the attendant threw in a "pre-paid toll package" when they weren't even traveling on toll roads! My folks are in their 70s and these folks clearly took advantage of them. I reviewed the invoice and called customer service spoke to Danyelle. She was rude and spiteful. Horrible!!!! Used NU in Denver and never again. First of all, getting a shuttle from the airport was ridiculous. Probably a 45 minute wait while watching AVIS, Hertz and Enterprise shuttles come through multiple times. The biggest catch is the insurance scam! We ALWAYS use our own car insurance when renting, however, we were told by the NU agent that if a NU car is in an accident, even if not our fault, NU would charge us the rental price per day for every day the vehicle is in the shop!
