So many Asian specialty flavors - pandan, taro, salted egg yolk, pork floss, corn, coconut, and etc. I'm actually not a huge fan of a lot of Asian flavors and opted for a more mainstream matcha with guava puree, iced with oat milk. It came to about $9 including tax, so my hopes were high! It was overall decent, the matcha flavor was a bit overwhelmed by the guava but even then it wasn't too sweet. I'd come back with a friend to try the cakes and sweets. The staff was super nice and my drink came pretty fast. TL;DR version: Small cafe with unique, mildly sweet Thai-inspired desserts. Very tasty coffee as well. In order, I would say my favorites were the Coconut Pandan, then Thai Tea, and then the Salted Egg Cheesecake. I have been to this small cafe, which is pretty close to my workplace, a handful of times for tea as well as cakes. They have a unique selection of cakes and drinks, as everything is Thai-inspired. The staff here is very friendly, and if I had more time on my lunch break, I would likely relax here and have a tea or coffee. Speaking of coffee, the Es-Yen, which used to be $6.50 but is now $7, is delicious. It's a mix of double espresso and a bit of sweetened milk. I was happy that it wasn't overly sweet, and the beans were all roasted with the drink being strong, but not too much so. The desserts are pretty similar in this way, with them having the typical light Asian sweetness. The first time I had the $10 Coconut Pandan Cake. The pandan was used to color the very vibrant cake base, while the coconut was used for the generous amount of frosting. The cake was moist, and when tasted without the coconut, there was a subtle sweetness and light aroma from the pandan. The frosting, which contained chunks of coconut, was a delightful extra texture, and it was only mildly sweet with a touch of saltiness. Combined, the pandan flavor felt a bit muted, but I find that to be the case in most pandan desserts unless they only contain that or something else that's very mild. It was very tasty overall, and I would recommend it. The second time, I had the much more unique and a bit more expensive $12 Ube Salted Egg Yolk Pork Floss Burnt Cheesecake. The cake consisted of many layers, including a thinner ube bottom with a light sweetness, a thicker salted egg yolk section, a cheesecake section, and some pork floss and seaweed on top. Of the many flavors, I would say the salted egg was the most pronounced, and similar to the coconut in the other dessert, it overpowered the more subtle ube. I liked the pork floss on top, which added a bit more sweetness, while the seaweed added an interesting texture. I wouldn't have a full cake, but it was pretty decent. The most recent time, I had the Thai Tea Cake for $10. This was the simplest of the three, with a buttercream flavored with Thai tea surrounding a very moist cake base. This was the sweetest of the three desserts, but it still wasn't overly so. If you're looking for something less complex, but still tasty, I would recommend it. read more

Finally has the chance to try their butterfly pea coconut jelly cake and also their new sweet corn cheesecake and the following are my thoughts: Sweet corn cheese cake was a solid 4.5/5. The cheese layer was smooth and rich, with subtle sweet corn flavor which was weirdly complimented the cream cheese without one overpowering another. I also appreciated little corn bits embedded inside to give the cake a little texture. The crust was buttery and crisp, but a little too firm and thick as it was hard to fork through. It's definitely a must get item on their menu. Their butterfly pea coconut jelly cake unfortunately was a let down and I would give a 2/5. The cake layer was good as it was soft and pillowy, but it was unfortunately smushed with the hard jelly layer on top. I could hardly taste any coconut in the cream and it was too sweet for my liking. The crust was extremely firm, hard and thick which made it extremely hard to fork through as with the jelly layers which was a surprise for me. The entire cake just fell apart, almost deconstructed and I had to just grab a little bit of everything from each layer and put the cake back together myself. This was a big disappointment as it was supposed to be one of their popular cakes which was almost always sold out. Chim Chim mostly focuses on cakes, but with some other smaller sweets also available, such as blondies and cookies. We tried the salted egg cookie and pandan coconut cake. These are for the friends who always gotta order a thai tea at a Thai restaurant!! The custard has that fragrance of a thai tea. Now I HAD to try the taro + salted egg yolk cheesecake with pork floss topping cake! What an interesting blend of flavors and a mix of sweet and savory. It is most definitely a BEAUTIFUL cake. Since it's a cheesecake, it is the densest of the cakes that are offered and also has a bit more gritty texture than smooth due to the ingredients (those who know salted egg yolk, know what im talkin bout). I loved how it held its own and tastes the best chilled. It could be the perfect slice for some or an interesting "I've never had this before" slice to others, but either way it'll be the talk of the town!!! All their cakes are so beautifully presented and the colors are absolutely stunning! I loved all three because they are very mildly sweet and don't feel too heavy either. If I had to pick a favorite it would definitely be the Taro Salted Egg Pork Floss Cheesecake! Not much space to sit inside - probably 3 or so tables in a very tight space so go early - luckily when we went, there was an empty table so we didn't have to wait for fight for any seating. After my second visit I was able to finally cop the herbal inhalers! My first time we caught they right before closing but were already shut down for the day 15min before closing time :( Thai Tea was super yummy and not too sweet! Wish the people who were in front of the menu weren't standing in front of all the beverage options. I hope to be back when a new choice of what to get next. I'm giving this place 5 stars for the thai tea cake alone, which is one of the great marvels of the universe, a cake worth traveling 45 minutes on the subway to eat. The miracle of the thing is that it is not too sweet, but packed with the flavor of thai tea, and with pudding instead of icing, so it's made fresh, and often. The thai tea cookies were disappointing, with more sugar and far, far less tea flavor. Excited to try the sweet corn cheesecake next, but my friend said that the salted egg cake was instagram-gorgeous but bland. My take is that if they focus on maximizing their flavor to sweetness ratio, like they did with the Thai tea cake, they'll be the greatest dessert place on the planet. Walking by after having a fantastic Filipino cuisine lunch a block away, the name is what caught my eye. Simple decor with a super unique menu of hot and cold drinks and very original desserts. Service was very warm, welcoming and fast and there is some seating as well if you prefer to stay to enjoy your drinks and treats. Tried all of the cakes they had on hand: our favorite was the Ube, Taro cheesecake with pork food and nori slivers on top! The combo sounds and looks a bit odd but the taste is complete chef's kiss!! Also really enjoyed the green pandan cake with a light vanilla frosting that had fresh coconut meat, none of the sugar coconut flakes crap, mixed into it! It was a very good textural surprise. I've been following Aing's confection and culinary feats spotlighting flavors like pandan, salted egg, and thai milk tea for a while now and was so excited to read that she was opening an actual storefront. I showed up right when they opened on their soft opening day and was greeted with a smile by her partner, and a nice display of treats that included pies, cake, and cookies. I sort of anticipated a line because southeast asian treats are still somewhat rare in New York and sought after but I think the buzz circuit just isn't conscious of this place yet and will be soon. Their Thai iced tea is pretty good but the stand out for me was their salted egg yolk and taro cheesecake. It was creamy, fluffy, and the three flavors complemented each other really well. My only piece of feedback is that the slice tasted a little frozen to me, which might be because of the refrigerated display case it was sitting in. I will say I experienced a bit of sticker shock, after taxes and tip the drink was almost $8 and cheesecake slice $14 but we're in Gramercy and I guess you have to pay the rent somehow. This is such a cute little café in the area, and I got the chance to come here on a beautiful spring afternoon. I tried their salted egg yolk pork floss cake as well as their pandan coconut cake. I wanted to come to Chim Chim since they opened but I didn't get a chance too. We finally came here on a raining day and bought the salted egg, ube cheesecake and chocolate cake. The flavors was nothing special. It's unique but the flavors didn't stood out. I can taste the salted egg in the cheesecake but not the ube. The pork floss overpowered the entire cheesecake. I'm so happy a Thai bakery opened in my neighborhood! We stopped by on the second day of opening and it was not crowded. There is a counter with all the cookies, brownies and cakes on display. Two tables are in the front of you want to eat inside. They serve the classic espresso drinks as well as matcha and Thai espresso. All the treats looked delicious and it was hard to choose what to order. We decided to get a matcha white chocolate cookie and slice of the Thai tea cake. The cookie was so good! It had a strong matcha flavor and it wasn't overly sweet, which I prefer. The white chocolate chips added a nice contrast to the grassy matcha. The Thai tea cake was so fluffy and moist. The green layers are supposed to be pandan but it tastes like regular homemade cake. Coconut cream is sweet with slight coconut taste and coconut pieces embedded inside (NOT thin coconut shreds, it's like they bought coconut chips and mixed it with some sweet cream). Overall tasted like regular cake with cream. Yes, the coconut pieces were chewy but not bursting with coconut flavor so I would say they don't contribute to overall taste of cake. Also, the cakes were soooo tiny!! They were as big as my uno card :(. For $12 and $10, I prob should have just tried some other bakery or buy some ice cream.
