A week ago today, I went to this Safeway location on my way home from work. I had called a couple days prior or even a week before to make sure returning this defective charger at this location was cool. The woman said sure, it's no problem. I had the original receipt , the receipt replacing the new broken one as well as both of the original packages. The young man who's name started with. Kha - totally refuses to make the exchange -he was bouncing around gesturing so mush I missed his full names. He says " no I'm not doing that - how do I know you bought that here ? We don't do that. I told him I spoke to someone and have all the things so ... it's ok I'm sure. I sort of laughed. Thought he was just a sarcastic ass. He says " no , you didn't speak to me , did you speak to me ? I don't think so , this could have come from anywhere." He shrugs his shoulders. I looked right at him and said , oh I see you're a racist. There is no reason to not honor your return policy. " He smirks and shrugs his shoulders . And says " oh well , I'm not doing that , NO." I asked to speak to a manger in person immediately. I told him I was done with him. He gets on the phone line and begins to explain his point of view. I told him to not speak for me and to ask for the manger to come to me at that moment. He just laughed and repeats his accusatory reasoning for not allowing each to exchange the item. It's stolen and he can't read the receipt fully, there's a word missing and it can be for anything. That boy laughed , accusing me of stealing and misrepresentation of an item in order to gain something for free. One receipt had sun faded but the barcode and price and description of the item were visible and identical to the other receipt I had for the same item except for the date of purchase . When the item first broke - I kept forgetting to put it in my truck for the next time I was at Safeway. So I bought another one. That day it was going to be all settled . Car charger , apt charger . I was feeling organized , haha. (((. Working 10-12 hours 6days a week, I was proud of myself for having all of the items ready that day , Within in the time frame, for returns or exchanges. I was happy to be off work and having Sunday off. I'm also young , very fit, healthy , intelligent and attractive so I was feeling good to just be alive as a Californian. Thankful for mobility and all the little things. I had been feeling blessed with all the fire victims and victims of hate crimes as of the recent past as I listened to news radio..." I don't treat others badly. Simply because I care about myself and that means , kindness and respect to others. Haha- until it gets real and I can't replace a phone charger because this ass is comfortable being openly prejudice. This Ignorant adult Male child , snapped my brown self BACK into reality. Racism is an almost everyday occurrence. Yes it is. yet - I keep it moving and treat people with respect. I don't have that luxury to mouth off and openly hate. When it's easy to be angry and hate when it's the taste that soils the ambiance I strive to create for myself- wherever I am - because the atmosphere out there is overruled by jerks like this. Being treated that way, was complete BS. And in no way was his silly self instigated by me. Except for those racist who hate seeing a brown person happy or not upset. That's likely why he was so angry . That is considered instigative. My happiness likely made him mad. I forget about those types until you make yourselves known. ))) The manager Appears, I explained to him and showed him what I had with me and how I was treated. He is obviously embarrassed by this employee as he ought have been . Matt exchanges the item for me and assured me the issue would be seriously addressed. I told him I'd leave this review . I used to believe the common misconception that Nugget is overpriced but it's really not true. I shop almost exclusively at Nugget now and I love it! They have good quality, natural and organic foods, as well as conventional products at low prices, particularly when they're on sale. Their stores also have a nice ambiance and friendly, helpful employees. Also, everyone raves about the sandwiches, but have you checked out their other ready-made foods? They have great food in the deli (and will let you sample anything!) and a whole wall of premade food facing the deli with salads, entrees, wraps, hummus, dips, etc. There's also a juice/coffee bar that squeezes all juice and smoothies to order and good quality sushi and Chinese food. Whenever I don't feel like cooking but I'm not sure what takeout to get, I just go to Nugget and pick up something delicious that's easy, cheap and homemade! read more

The corner between the Entrance/Exit, produce section, deli, cheese stand and the checkout counters are hard to maneuver around with a shopping cart when the market is busy. The meat area is on point. The butchers are well versed in each cut and are very friendly. The Booze Buyer has a superb palate and knows a ton about different wine varietals, craft beers, and whiskeys. If Nugget doesn't have an item that you are looking for send them an email or a tweet and they will find a way to get you that said item within 3-5 business days (I've tried this 5+ times). * If it wasn't for the cramped area this place would be a 5/5... ** I tend to drive to the Nugget in Woodland strictly because this one gets crowded. *** I'd be happy to point out that the sushi section does indeed produce better sushi then the Davis Co-op. I love this market. A wide variety of specialty items. Some things are more pricey however the quality of everything is good. Their fish department is the best in town. They were closed at 8PM and we had gotten there at 8:01PM. He was kind of enough to let us purchase two Classic Acai bowls :) -- Classic Acai Bowl ($7.95) -- Acai (pronounced "ahhh-psy-eeeee") blended into a thick smoothie, topped with granola, banana slices and drizzled with honey. - I admit this is quite pricey for an Acai bowl, but the acai is relatively potent in flavor. I use to work at a smoothie spot that made Acai bowls and let me tell you...Nugget does not skimp on the acai juice :D! - Thick consistency. Beautifully portioned slicing of the banana, which I appreciate because it shows he did not rush making this order for us (trust me, I use to work with others who make these parfait/bowls). I love Nugget because we don't have a Whole foods. Ironic I know. Although from the decor to the products I think they are pretty similar. This particular location is not as big as some of the other gourmet supermarkets but the workers are all very nice. The seafood selection is not the greatest but the cheese man is so knowledgeable! We had wine and cheese night a while ago and every time we went to select a new cheese we can always get our questions answered or get new suggestions for cheeses. The deli there is super accommodating too. They have since taken some good sandwiches off their menu like the lamb and fennel sandwich, but they still have a pretty good selection. You can build your sandwich on a variety of different bread, having any meat, veggies, and even have an option of toasting it. Great supermarket for a small town like Davis. This is the nicest Nugget in the area, starting from the giant statues on the exterior to a very clean appearance inside. Very bright and ultra polished, when shopping here there is no mistaking Nugget is few steps above any other grocery store we have around. Obviously, this is no bargain shopping. The prices for everyday items are higher than at Safeway or Raley's, but when an item is on sale it can be comparable or even lower. I frequently come here for three things: fresh bread, deli, and beer. Deli is awesome and the employees go out of their way to make sure the charcuterie is sliced exactly to my liking. This nugget is one of the few places where they carry Jamon Serrano. Their bakery offers a variety of breads and pastries, most of them European style. I almost always get the seeded EPI when I can find it. It is like a dozen small rolls connected on a asymmetrical loaf, perfect for snacks and small sandwiches. Their beer is 95% refrigerated and Mike, the guy in charge of wine/beer, surely knows his stuff and what to order. Not only they carry a lot of stuff you can't find around, even at specialty stores, the emphasis is on local breweries. From time to time they get Russian River stuff but it is gone before you know it so act quick. The selection is so good that I buy 90% of my bottled beer here now and stopped going to BevMo completely. If there is a downside to shopping at Nugget is that it's hard to leave without spending some serious cash. Also, the vegetable/fruit isle is a little tight and makes it hard to get through when carts are around. It's hard to hold anything against them tho as the selection and the overall looks, on top of a superb customer service makes this Nugget location the best grocery store in Yolo/Solano County. We enjoy Nugget because they offer great selections of fresh fruit and vegetables. We can never pass the bakery without buying something. It is nice to have a place that offers a great variety in their deli area when you are looking for a nice dinner without having to cook. We love talking with the staff in the cheese area as there is always something new we haven't tried. Again another area we can never walk away without buying something. Nugget is to Davis, as Whole Foods is to the Bay Area. You can get fresh fruits and veggies here, and good quality meat. It is expensive (which can be a turn off for college students), but the food here is a lot better than what you can get at Safeway. If you don't feel you can afford to shop here, I would suggest buying the "simple" things (pasta, cereal, canned foods, etc.) at your local grocery store and then coming here for the food where quality matters. I really really really miss this amazing market. I graduated last June, and before my afternoon commencement ceremony, I brought my family here for a meal from the salad bar, hot foods section, sandwiches, etc. Everyone in my family was really impressed, to my relief. My family is Chinese, and even they loved the great quality Chinese food here (who would have expected that in a local, American market?!) My sister, who doesn't go to UCD, even craved Nugget Market food the other day!! I LOVE the sushi here -- I have told people that it is the BEST SUSHI IN DAVIS for its quality. I am not kidding. It's SO FRESH -- you can taste how fresh it is. I (unfortunately) did not try the sushi until my last semester in Davis, but I made sure to enjoy it. The sandwiches are also great for lunch -- super filling! Biggest selection of anything you could possibly want here -- even better than Whole Foods...this hands down beats Whole Foods. The DRINKS aisle is amazing -- an entire, wide aisle of craft drinks. It's so much fun to look at all the colorful, quaint packaging. Friend and I spent hours just going through aisles and checking out labels we had never seen before. Customer service here is also friendly and helpful (boy do I miss that now that I'm in New York...) It seems like a nice place to work at (and in fact, it was deemed a top place a few years back, I think.) I wish I had gone to this market sooner during my Davis time (I didn't until end of senior year, but it's quite expensive especially on a college student's budget...so at least I saved some money? I didn't have much of a chance to come here when I was actually in college because I didn't have a car and didn't feel like biking across town just to get groceries...but! When I was with friends with cars, I loved checking this place out! SO MANY DELICIOUS THINGS! The acai bowls look fantastic (although somewhat pricey)--I like their Davis-themed names! :P They have all kinds of delicious foods here! :] My friends are big fans of the cookies, and I am all about their pumpkin pie milkshakes, which are apparently seasonal after all (I'd heard from someone that you could technically order it year-round, but alas!). They have a peppermint one in December that I haven't had a chance to try yet. Their produce looks amaaaaazing, and service is very friendly and helpful. :]! It is always a pleasure shopping here (specifically the Nugget on Covell in Davis). The store itself is very clean and aesthetically pleasing. The produce section has a beautiful selection of both organic and conventional produce; everything is fresh, often local, and there is usually someone there stocking the display that can answer any questions. The people at the meat and seafood counter are always helpful and can take special orders. The seafood is labeled with sourcing information and is color coded to show sustainability and environmental impact. Local products are highlighted throughout the store. The wine and cheese sections are extensive and there is usually someone available to give recommendations. Overall, the staff is extremely friendly and helpful and seem to enjoy their jobs. If you ask where an item is located, they will show you (not just give you an aisle number), and someone will almost always offer to help you to your car after you've checked out. I am always a bit bemused by those who say this store is expensive - I have shopped at all the grocery stores in town, and the prices are completely in line with their competitors. Perhaps because the store "feels" higher end, some assume the prices must also be higher? I suppose if you want a lot of packaged foods and want to only shop for sale items, you could save money with loss leader items at Safeway, but produce and meat prices are not much different, and frankly the quality is often better at Nugget. Deli and bakery prices might be a bit higher, but again, you are getting what you're paying for. Also, the tables on the patio outside the store are a great place to enjoy a pastry and coffee, or a gourmet sandwich and smoothy! read more

I guess I'm on a reviewing grocery store kick lately Well, Nugget is pretty great! It's our local (ish) grocery chain featuring lots of delicious healthy options. Of course this comes at a high price which keeps me from coming here for regular grocery shopping. However, this a great place to come for prepared foods, special items, unique foods etc. I love the prepared foods here, the cheese section, wine section and the meat counter. They have the best thick cut bacon here! Also, if you go to the wine section and tell them what you are making for dinner and your budget they will give you a great suggestion for wine to go along with your meal. Oh the Nugget, the priciest and most delicious of all supermarkets. I live perilously close to this store, within walking distance, and I come here wayyy more often than my wallet should allow. Their produce is significantly fresher and tastier than other big grocery stores in Davis, and they usually have decent deals on a few fruits and vegetables. Furthermore, there are things here you just can't find anywhere else, like really good pre-made curry sauces, a huge selection of kombucha, and really delicious marinated chicken and other meat. The hot food bar here is mediocre at best. It sometimes has one or two dishes that really dazzle, but it's mostly knock off Asian food that doesn't taste super authentic, although their postickers are pretty good. Their sushi is delicious and the perfect size for lunch or a snack, but is expensive. The biggest draw for me is the grain bar, since they usually have some really excellent pasta salads or different combinations of grains and salads that I've never thought of putting together, like their cashew thai noodle salad or their kale caesar salad. They also have a traditional salad bar where you can make your own salad. Both of these are $8.99 a pound, but when you want to eat something healthy and you just don't feel like cooking, it's worth it. Their soups are bomb too, and they also have pre-made wraps, salads, and other meals that you can take to go, which make for a pricey but delicious lunch at work. Then, of course, there's the fantastic bakery. I really like their different loaves of bread- they have olive bread, bread with different types of cheese and herbs, and it's all excellent. Their cheesecake is freaking fantastic, but they have a good selection of non-dairy desserts such as vegan cookies and non-dairy ice cream. Their cafe, while also pricey, has some really excellent seasonal drinks and always serves super delicious smoothies. I highly recommend their pumpkin chai. All the people who work at the Nugget are super friendly, and I'm pretty sure they recognize me since I go there so often. I just have to be wary of how much things costs or I could spend my whole paycheck here in one swoop. They often have good deals on certain items, and it's worth finding them. I don't do my main grocery shopping here, but I often stop here to find the last few ingredients that I missed for whatever I am making. I would not shop for food in bulk here, but if you're looking for something healthy and obscure that you can't find at any of the other main stores, the Nugget probably has it. read more

They also have a bacon option available as well. Also, if you get the chance, try their milkshakes. Mango Madness and Strawberry Vanilla are by far the most amazing things I have ever had. This is by far the best sandwich place even though it's in a grocery store. They just came out with new sandwich kinda and still do build your owns too. The artichoke Romano dip on a sandwich is unreal. Also everything is so fresh. I do my grocery shopping here and everything is easily accessible and amazing, but a little pricey. It's very worth it. The smoothie bar is awesome too. I usually do the mango madness and add spinach. I've gotten açaí bowls and their hot bar too and am always beyond pleased. I just love the bakery here so much, every cake I've gotten so far were delicious ( but they don't always have the same cakes each time). The place itself is very neat and clean. It just feels amazing the shop here. The only problem I've ever had was that there were a few vegetables that were stocked but wasn't in the best condition to be bought, then again, they're some things that people don't normally buy (I.e: Japanese eggplants). The variety of organic fruits and vegetables are amazing. I love getting my organic strawberries here when I don't have time to go to the farmers market. Aside from regular lemons, they also carry the Mexican kind which I found really interesting. The ready to eat food is my favorite when I don't want to make lunch. The grilled corn ceviche is amazing and not much is added for the true taste of the vegetables. The salmon cakes were delicious but a little dry, but they were sitting out there for a bit so I'm not surprised at all. When this store first opened we used to bring out of town guests here to see the produce department. Its artistic display of fresh produce impressed the out-of-towners and continues to impress me. Now more stores display their produce in a similar fashion so we no longer include a stop at the Nugget on our tour of Davis attractions. I still have trouble finding the green onions since they are displayed with just their bottoms sticking out. Great selection of almost any item from my international cookbook recipes. Nugget is my go-to store for foreign brands and fresh quality ingredients. Sure, you may pay a bit more than at Safeway, but the quality is high, and it's a nice walk from my home. This market is really expensive.. but if you catch their sales, some stuff are dirt cheap. Especially some of their weekend sales! Definitely don't come here if you're not sure what you're looking for, though. I prefer this one to the South Davis location even though I live in South Davis because it has fresher fruit/produce, their prepared food seems better, and it's a LOT bigger. I would suggest coming here for their fruit, eggs, prepared food like sandwiches (which are HUGE) and salads. Don't come here for snacks like chips, bread, etc unless you really have to or if there's a REALLY good sale that week because it's honestly not worth it. We ordered from Nugget's for a memorial gathering for 17 at our house. The food comes artfully displayed on wooden trays that can be used for other occasions or composted. We ordered 5 trays and deviled eggs. All EXCELLENT. Even the veggie tray was fresh with tasty organic veggies. If I had the money to shop here for my weekly groceries, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, we're not all making that Chancellor money, so there's no way for that to happen. Still, this place has the things that other places might not have. They have a wide variety of gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options. They've got a huge selection of local and organic stuff. The best thing about this place, though, is their sandwiches. I'd pick a Nugget sandwich over most other sandwiches in this city. They're delicious, especially the bread. You can tell it's all fresh produce. My only complaint is that the seating to eat isn't all that great, as you're kind of just watching people check out. Nugget sandwiches are absolutely the best! I used to work at the Davis Athletic Club across the street and I'd always come here to get food. Also, it was kinda close to UCC so it was a good lunch option on Sundays. Thanks to my roomie, I always got the same sandwich: ciabatta bread with aioli on both sides, sausalito turkey, provolone, all the fixins, salt, oil & vinegar, gotta get the avocado (extra $), and then have it toasted but ask them to put in the lettuce after. As a grocery store, it's really nice. They had better stuff than Safeway, but it was a little more money. This place is awesome, I love the beer selection, the deli and "chinese" food isle as well. Although more expensive, Nugget carries a much wider range of things than does Safeway or Save Mart. If you're into the organic or local stuff, then Nugget is definitely the place to go...not the ONLY one, because there is the co-op, but that place gives me the creeps. Nugget has all the food, wine and beer selection you could desire minus the pretentious and self-righteous atmosphere that the co-op seems to rub off on me (from the shoppers, I should say). Almost every time I go in, I get a welcome greeting from their workers, who always seem to carry the best attitude (after working retail, you'd realize what an amazing feat that can be). As far as the breakdown for my review goes, this place should deserve 5-stars just on their beer selection alone. I'm sort of a beer-snob as they call it...and Nugget is probably the only place, save for Davis Liquor, where I'll go when I'm in the mood for a special brew. What puts it above the rest? Easy, it's all the reviews and scores they've posted under almost every single beer from beeradvocate.com. It's probably one of the most helpful things I've ever seen a store do...because nobody wants to drop $4 on a single bottle of beer and not have it live up to their expectations, so kudos for that. If I ever turned around from the beer, I'd be able to browse probably the finest wine selection in all of Davis as well (with reviews and scores under those too). This isle is crucial if you're aiming to impress someone through food and the appropriate wine pairing. I've not had as much success in this regard, but it's definitely useful to have. If nugget keeps this up, they can monopolize the supermarket industry for all I care. read more
