This review is about the bakery section of Nugget. Ive lived in Davis my whole life but the other day was my first time trying the macaroons from Nugget and oh my gosh have I been missing out! I ordered a pistachio, raspberry, and black and white macaroon. I tried the pistachio and raspberry first and was pleased but not stunned but then I tasted the black and white macaroon and my taste buds exploded. It was so so yummy! I will for sure be coming back and getting that macaroon whenever Im in the mood for something sweet! read more

Nugget is a great store and I would shop there if I made Bezos money. The displays are beautiful the selection of ethnic and specialty foods as well as self care items is unbeatable and the staff is extremely friendly. They have the best cheese counter in Davis and a delectable deli. With all this in mind it's understandable that the prices are high but I personally find it hard to justify shopping there regularly. read more

I can update my review beyond the deli to the grocery store. I signed up for their weekly sales emails a couple months ago and each week you get a special coupon for a deeply discounted item (last week it was fresh strawberries for $1.49) and a survey of the store specials. Since I'm a penny-pincher, following the specials is a good way to buy quality products or try new things on a budget.Nugget Markets is now in my regular grocery rotation. Nuggets transforms grocery shopping from a chore I want to quickly get over with to a fun and exciting experience each time. Yes, it's bougie. Is it worth it? Undoubtedly. I'm a huge fan of the acai bowls here, with the peanut butter bowl being my favorite bowl of all time, making acai bowls in the Bay Area pale in comparison. The bowls may be unconventionally small, but they're packed with robust flavor. Outstanding and reliable quality that I expect from a high end market. Next, the amazing discoveries I've found at this ginormous establishment. Nuggets put me on to this honey lavender gelato that frequently goes on sale, which helps a college student like me treat herself from time to time. It is the only grocery store in town that carries such a unique set of peculiar flavors, which is hands down the best for an adventurous foodie like me. Next, the deli section has amazing selections of various different meats, with the apple smoked bacon being the best bacon I've ever had, making the oscar meyer deli fresh bacon from regular grocery stores look like spam. It is the most important bacon you'll ever eat. Trust. After that comes a simple luxury that only someone who loves this particular flavor combination may enjoy. There are these absolutely delectable fresh jalapeno poppers that are huge, filled with cream cheese, and wrapped with the amazing bacon past mentioned...could my life get any better? I save the best for last.. The cheese selection offered at nuggets is mother of all cheese sections. My boyfriend and I always share the best, havartiest conversations with the cheese connoisseur there. They do cycle around but they're all super friendly and immensely helpful with whatever you may need, from cutting a block into smaller more digestible pieces or to sample anything. I would trust these cheese people with my knife! See what I did there, haha. Anywho, thanks to nuggets I've been able to try all these quality life-changing cheeses without compromising my wallet, thanks to the amazing service and wide sampling availability. So far, we've been put on cheeses like, Midnight Moon, Cyprus Grove, Humboldt Fog, Mimolette, and black label cambozola, which with fig spread that our cheese friend recommended, is our favorite cheese yet. Don't hesitate to take a walk and explore around Nuggets. It's ability to turn something typically mundane into an adventurous and exhilarating simple activity is astounding. I LOVE this place. They're a bit on the pricey side, but their selection of high quality grocery items more than makes up for it. The sandwiches here are bomb! Favorites are the stallone (roast beef with horseradish), mary's fav (lamb with chevre cheese), and classic steak. Their sandwiches pretty much beat every other sandwich places in Davis that I've tried. The sushi here is actually really good for supermarket quality sushi! Do not go to any of the sushi places downtown, they're all pretty terrible besides Mikuni (but that place charges a kidney for a sushi roll). The veggie section here is top quality. I notice that all the veggies I get here last much longer than other supermarkets. And from time to time, they carry cotton candy grapes, which you have to try at least once in your life. Salad/grain bar has a pretty nice selection of many pasta salads, different grains, and chicken wings. The chicken wings are probably my favorite from this section. I called the Deli the other day because I was having a little trouble using the site to order Holiday meals online. I was in an accident last week and am injured and feeling loopy which is why I was ordering a Thanksgiving meal. I spoke to Maritza, the Deli supervisor. She was so sweet and helpful. It was wonderful how she took time out of her day to be so patient with me. I was able to place my order eventually. She gave me a call later to tell me me that it indeed went through! Excellent service. Nice store size and layout. Great selection. Easy to buy local because the selves are marked. My favorite thing is the prepared food selection. We can pick up hot international foods or build a custom salad. The prepared salads rotate varieties, so it's fun to see what's available. I only recently discovered this gem of a grocery store, but the 5 stars is for the amazing sandwiches, vast hot food selection, and gourmet food products. Quality of everything is really good here and it's worth putting some more money into your groceries for certain items. For sandwiches, I really love the portabella mushroom sandwich and the salmon sandwich. They're around $9-10 and on the smaller side but they taste fantastic. The bakery is really impressive too if you're into sweets. I'll usually pickup some fresh green produce or peppers, unique flavored potato chips and chocolate, and the spicy jalapeno pork from the hot food section. Service is really good here and the staff are all friendly. Also, they have samples for products and cheeses. read more

I don't know what it is about this place but this is my FAVORITE place to get cupcakes. (Plus they're SUPER affordable!) My family and a few of my friends find this odd. And some just do not understand the hype about cupcakes. I've tried multiple cupcake boutiques but I put this at the very top of my list. I will be back for a new more boxes Nugget! P.S. Acai bowls and egg salad!!! I know it's a random pair but it's my two favorite things to get at Nugget. I wish I knew Nugget sold acai bowls before my last few months in Davis.. The berry acai bowl is amazing! I usually get it without the dark chocolate drizzle since I feel like the dark chocolate swirls are enough for me! These bowls are a bit on the expensive side.. Around $9-10 per bowl but they're so worth it if you're in the mood to splurge a little (or if its a hot day and you want to try to be semi healthy). Egg salad... One of my favorite things of all time. Yes I know I'm weird but I love eggs and if you don't like eggs then maybe you're the weird one :P I love the egg salad here because they don't add a bunch of other things like celery/pickled stuff/etc. in it. I love everything about it, the coffee/juice/acai bowls, the pastries and cakes (especially Ettore's), customizable sandwiches, salad bar, and even the local produce. Everything is super high quality and I love how their products are from local places. I love how Nuggets Markets gives back to the community! I was at downtown Davis chilling under a tree when a Nugget employee came over and gave me a $10 gift card for wearing a mask. So I figured I'd walk over and give it a try. This place is the most beautiful market I've been to, and the kale açaí bowl was the best I've had in my life (And that's saying a lot since I'm from SF!) I love the nugget's cinnamon rolls, sourdough bread rounds and grocery selection. However, I bought a oreo cheesecake slice and a oreo cake slice tonight and was severely disappointed by both. the cheesecake was oddly textured and tasted almost plastic-y? The oreo cake was dry, and the frosting on top tasted like cool whip and the frosting in the middle tasted very artificial and like extremely sickly sweet shortening. I was so sad because it looked so good and each dessert was about $6. So sad! Word to other shoppers: Skip the cheesecakes and cake slices and stick to the sourdough breads and cinnamon rolls! read more

They no longer will do a 24 hour notice cake. No matter how carefully ordered a cake is, it has not been a satisfying treat. The butter cream icing tastes like it is made with 1/2 butter, 1/2 shorting. I asked for a raspberry filling. I got a bunch of fresh raspberries smashed in between the layers. Fresh berries have no place in a chocolate birthday cake. It made for a sloppy wet center to the cake. The chocolate tastes like nothing. It certainly is NOT a good chocolate cake. I suppose I'm most disappointed by the sloppy poinsettias around the edge of the cake. Not at all a pretty birthday cake. Not a holiday cake either. For everyone in my family, I bake the birthday cakes. But no one will bake for me, so I get the cake that tastes like it came from a box mix. The frosting tastes like Krusties frosting mix, from a box. I know that the manager of the bakery will apologize and offer to refund the entire cost of the cake. The catch is trying to show up in the store when the manager is actually in the bakery. It's beyond difficult, I myself have tried on many occasions but have never managed to meet him. If the cake costs $40, I'd like $40 worth of flavor. read more

Yesterday night, as in prior years, I called this Covell Nugget store to pre-order a Turducken Roll, like the one pictured on their website: (see attached photo) I received the worst customer service I've ever experienced in a grocery store. Not only was the meat department clerk unknowledgeable about Nugget's products, but he went out of his way to mock me for wanting a Turducken Roll for Thanksgiving. I mean, I've gotten superior service from automated messaging systems: at least there you can eventually reach a live person if you push enough buttons. Here, I felt like I was listening to a broken record, because he kept repeating "You can't order a 2-pound Turducken." Which, I kept telling him, was neither the size nor the product I wanted. I feel like there was someone else in the background, maybe a girl he was trying to impress, as he was going out of his way to try and sound stupid funny instead of helping customers. Our conversation... which lasted for over 10 minutes. Imagine that!! How frustrating!! Me: Hi, I'd like to place an order for a Turducken Roll, may I do that here? Clerk 1: Sure, let me pull out my order book. Me: Can you tell me how much they cost? Clerk: I don't know. Me: Do you have an estimate then. Clerk 1: No, we don't have them yet and this book doesn't have pricing. ...[eventually he suggests it may be around $15 a pound] Clerk 1: How many pounds do you want? Me: Between 4 and 5 pounds is fine. Clerk 1: Okay... we can't sell you a 2-pound Turducken. Me: I'm looking for a Turducken Roll, not a whole bird. Clerk 1: Yes, I know what a Turducken is, we just can't sell you a 2-pound Turducken. Me: I don't want a Turducken. I just want a 4 or 5-pound roll, it's boneless. Clerk 1: Do you know what a Turducken is, it's a chicken, inside a duck, inside a turkey. We can't sell you a 2-pound Turducken. Me: I've ordered this from you before, it's a meat roll, it's boneless. And I don't want 2 pounds. Clerk 1: I don't know what we may have offered in the past, but we can't make you a 2-pound Turducken this year. Me: No, I don't want 2 pounds, I want 4 or 5 pounds. Clerk 1: What, the call's breaking up. Me: One, two, three, four, five. Five pounds. Clerk 1: I can put a note to look, but I can't guarantee we'll be able to do anything that small. Me: Any idea when you will know? Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Clerk: No, Thanksgiving is 8 days way. ....[eventually he gets tired of denying they sell Turducken rolls] Clerk 1: That's not called a Turducken. That's a frozen Rolley Polly. We don't make those, we make Turduckens using fresh meat. Rolley Pollys are made by a third party, and you can only get them frozen. We may get them this year. After the above waste of my evening, I get the brilliant idea to call the other Nugget, which is 3 miles from this one. Why I didn't think to do this 10-minutes earlier I'll never know... the call goes like this: Me: Hi, I'd like to place an order for a Turducken Roll, do you sell them. Clerk 2: Yes, what size would you like. Me: 4-5 pounds. Clerk 2: We typically sell Turducken rolls at 2-3 pounds, so you may have to purchase two, is that okay? Me: Sure, is it frozen or fresh? Whenever someone asks me what the perks of living in the Sacramento-area are, I always mention Nugget. It truly is a gem, and my only gripe with them is that there are not more locations! Yes, Nugget is a bit pricey, but it's completely worth it. Produce is always fresh and carefully selected, their meat and seafood department is top-notch, and the employees are incredibly helpful and kind. Did I mention that they also have a whole cheese department and staff, and a sommelier?? The deli and bakery are really solid as well. The pre-made meals are usually delicious, well-priced, and decently healthy. Perfect for finals week whenever you're too busy to cook and don't want another pizza or fast food night. Seriously, if you can't find a product or guidance at any another grocery store, the odds are high that you can find it here. read more

I didn't know whether to give this place a four or a five star review, but decided to round up rather than down. I still would like to say that between this nugget market, and the one on Mace, I prefer the one on Mace. They do, however, have a wider variety of food for their salad bar/prepared food section, but since I never use that section, I can't really comment on that part of the store. I do really like that this store has a sitting area outside, so if you do end up getting a sandwich at nugget (which I totally recommend), then you have a nice place to sit right outside. In general Nugget's prices are higher, but you can be happy knowing that based on what I have heard, they treat their employees very well, and I think it shows, because the employees seem to be happy. In general, you can get pretty high quality items at the Nugget stores. I personally only come to Nugget for their sandwiches, and specialty items like their cheeses, and certain wines, ooh and their bread which is always so fresh. :) read more

I love this market. A wide variety of specialty items. Some things are more pricey however the quality of everything is good. Their fish department is the best in town. And the meat department has lots of interesting marinades ect. And the bakery is the best in the area. There's something for everyone at nugget market. read more

Had a not so great experience at the sandwich counter tonight. I've never ordered at this location before, and there were lines on both sides. I got in the one that seemed right (on the side where employees were coming out to take orders). I guess I was wrong though, because when the employee asked me if I had already order I said no she told me in a really snobby tone that I was in the wrong spot...okay, sorry. I have really horrible social anxiety and it was super crowded, and I thought I was were i was supposed to be. After the employee rudely told me about the line, I asked nicely if they would be able to slice me fresh turkey because I prefer it thinner than what's already pre sliced...I've never had this request denied at the woodland location. The employee flat out just said no, that it was already sliced. Okay, I get that it takes longer, but why can't they do it? The Woodland location does it every time I ask. I've been really happy with this store in the past, but most likely won't be back anytime soon. read more

A week ago today, I went to this Safeway location on my way home from work. I had called a couple days prior or even a week before to make sure returning this defective charger at this location was cool. The woman said sure, it's no problem. I had the original receipt , the receipt replacing the new broken one as well as both of the original packages. The young man who's name started with. Kha - totally refuses to make the exchange -he was bouncing around gesturing so mush I missed his full names. He says " no I'm not doing that - how do I know you bought that here ? We don't do that. I told him I spoke to someone and have all the things so ... it's ok I'm sure. I sort of laughed. Thought he was just a sarcastic ass. He says " no , you didn't speak to me , did you speak to me ? I don't think so , this could have come from anywhere." He shrugs his shoulders. I looked right at him and said , oh I see you're a racist. There is no reason to not honor your return policy. " He smirks and shrugs his shoulders . And says " oh well , I'm not doing that , NO." I asked to speak to a manger in person immediately. I told him I was done with him. He gets on the phone line and begins to explain his point of view. I told him to not speak for me and to ask for the manger to come to me at that moment. He just laughed and repeats his accusatory reasoning for not allowing each to exchange the item. It's stolen and he can't read the receipt fully, there's a word missing and it can be for anything. That boy laughed , accusing me of stealing and misrepresentation of an item in order to gain something for free. One receipt had sun faded but the barcode and price and description of the item were visible and identical to the other receipt I had for the same item except for the date of purchase . When the item first broke - I kept forgetting to put it in my truck for the next time I was at Safeway. So I bought another one. That day it was going to be all settled . Car charger , apt charger . I was feeling organized , haha. (((. Working 10-12 hours 6days a week, I was proud of myself for having all of the items ready that day , Within in the time frame, for returns or exchanges. I was happy to be off work and having Sunday off. I'm also young , very fit, healthy , intelligent and attractive so I was feeling good to just be alive as a Californian. Thankful for mobility and all the little things. I had been feeling blessed with all the fire victims and victims of hate crimes as of the recent past as I listened to news radio..." I don't treat others badly. Simply because I care about myself and that means , kindness and respect to others. Haha- until it gets real and I can't replace a phone charger because this ass is comfortable being openly prejudice. This Ignorant adult Male child , snapped my brown self BACK into reality. Racism is an almost everyday occurrence. Yes it is. yet - I keep it moving and treat people with respect. I don't have that luxury to mouth off and openly hate. When it's easy to be angry and hate when it's the taste that soils the ambiance I strive to create for myself- wherever I am - because the atmosphere out there is overruled by jerks like this. Being treated that way, was complete BS. And in no way was his silly self instigated by me. Except for those racist who hate seeing a brown person happy or not upset. That's likely why he was so angry . That is considered instigative. My happiness likely made him mad. I forget about those types until you make yourselves known. ))) The manager Appears, I explained to him and showed him what I had with me and how I was treated. He is obviously embarrassed by this employee as he ought have been . Matt exchanges the item for me and assured me the issue would be seriously addressed. I told him I'd leave this review . I also told him I'm open to revising it after I reconnected with him. He was normal and didn't seem to have any objective but to do his job well. I do hope he follows through. I will too. read more

This Nugget Markets is very cramped. The corner between the Entrance/Exit, produce section, deli, cheese stand and the checkout counters are hard to maneuver around with a shopping cart when the market is busy. The meat area is on point. The butchers are well versed in each cut and are very friendly. The Booze Buyer has a superb palate and knows a ton about different wine varietals, craft beers, and whiskeys. If Nugget doesn't have an item that you are looking for send them an email or a tweet and they will find a way to get you that said item within 3-5 business days (I've tried this 5+ times). * If it wasn't for the cramped area this place would be a 5/5... ** I tend to drive to the Nugget in Woodland strictly because this one gets crowded. *** I'd be happy to point out that the sushi section does indeed produce better sushi then the Davis Co-op.
