Ahh, Nutella is one of those words that bring so much happiness to so many! It is no wonder that when my friend and I first saw Nutella Cafe we started screaming like crazy people in the middle of the street! We were actually on our way to a Wendella architectural tour, but decided on the spot that we were going to make it back even if we had to skip food all day to make room for it! We didn't, of course, and I'm actually glad we ate something before hand. When we first saw this place was about noon and there was a pretty long line. When we came back around eight in the evening or so, there was still a line but we were able to get in relatively fast. The menu is quite small and there aren't as many Nutella items as you may think being that this is called Nutella café. In fact the products with Nutella are quite few and in truth there aren't any specialty made, it is just crepes, that you can slap Nutella on or fruits that you can dip in Nutella, and that sort of thing. They did have Nutella gelato which I tried but it was terrible. So we pretty much had our hopes up the whole day for not a lot. Service is nonexistent of course. there are a lot of people coming through and cashiers just want to get you out as soon as possible. Utterly disappointing. One positive is that we were able to sit by a table with an outlet to charge your phones other than that this was a very unremarkable place. read more

We came pretty late before closing and the staff were all so friendly. I thought the crepe was delicious and worth the trip. I think it's worth stopping by. I tried the creme brûlée Nutella with mixed fruit as well which is to DIE for. 10/10. The only reason I'm giving this place a 4/5 is because my crepe was not hot and my cousins crepes were hard and wouldn't cut through easily with a knife which means they weren't exactly fresh. I found the Nutella Cafe to be completely underwhelming and overrated. I think it's great for die-hard Nutella lovers but for someone who enjoys it but not to the degree of eating it straight out of the jar every night for dessert, it's not worth it. The menu is majorly overpriced and nothing stood out as especially special to me. It could be that we went right when they opened at 8am so there's only so much sweets I can handle for breakfast. I ended up getting the croissant but I had thought it was maybe baked with Nutella inside. It was just inserted afterward. For $4.95 I can get my own jar of Nutella and make a bunch of Nutella stuffed croissants. But I guess it is the experience you're paying for. I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but definitely more. That being said, die-hard Nutella Lovers- Check it out NOW! You'll love it! The crepe was pretty good, wish it had some vanilla ice cream with it. I'd give it a 7/10. The baguette, however, was appalling. It was way too hard to chew. The cool: -Once you place your order at the cashier, they will give you a wireless device for you to place on the table you choose to sit. Somehow, the server will find your location later without the device buzzing. -Wifi included, just ask for the password. Rec: (+) Liege waffle: Belgian waffle topped with chopped pears, hazelnuts, and a drizzle of nutella. A less overwhelming option if you don't want as big of a sugar rush as it's only 1 waffle. (+) Croissant french toast: 2 french toast sprinkled with powdered sugar, chopped hazel nuts, and a drizzle of nutella. A small side of strawberries included. With any beverage, you have the option of adding $1 to 'nutella it' (top it with whipped cream + nutella). The disappointment: There's no gift shop inside for nutella memorabilia. I LOVE NUTELLA! Especially when it's mixed with fruit. Based off of the fact that there are always long lines for the Nutella Cafe, my expectations were high. I stopped by on a Wednesday after work at 5PM and lucked out - the line only took 5 minutes! I tried the Steel-Cut Oats, the Strawberry Nutella Crepe, and the Nutella Croissant. The Steel-Cut Oats was by far my favorite. The dish was hearty and had plenty of Nutella in it to satisfy my craving. They put a couple of raspberries on top (they could have added more - I liked the added layer of flavor). The Strawberry Nutella Crepe was good, but it was a little small and there wasn't a lot of filling on the inside. I felt like the crepe definitely could have used more Nutella. Even with the smear of Nutella and hazelnuts on the plate, it wasn't enough. This is the Nutella Cafe! I was expecting more... Lastly, the Nutella Croissant was a good croissant, but there was a tablespoon or less of Nutella in the center. It needed to be more evenly distributed and there needed to be more of it in general. Only a couple of bites in the middle made it a "Nutella Croissant." At least the texture was buttery and flaky like it was supposed to be. The service was good. This might be a bit overhyped, but the food is pretty good. The wait to get inside goes pretty quickly and we were handed a menu while waiting so we could see the options. The panzanella is delicious, though I could have had a bit more Nutella and included... this is a Nutella cafe after all! My BF got a crepe with banana and strawberry which looked good as well. Base on the previous review by many, we decided to visit this restaurant at the opening time in the morning where there was no line. I have seen many have complaints about the line and wait in the line. We were there 3 minutes before opening and there were about 10 people in the line. Since we are early, the wait is short and the order is quick. I have order the buckwheat crepe filled with bacon. Mmmm bacon. Who can deny. The crepe top with arugula salad and a poached egg. It was great to break the poached egg to spilled over the salad. I like this dish the best. We also order bananas crepe. It has the Nutella infill with banana. It is a hearty food. Great to try. One thing I want to said is they have been open this store for a month. They still did not know the routine. The routine include some customers get a cool whip at the crepe and some don't. I was in Chicago for the weekend and coincidentally happened to read something about the Nutella Cafe and that you could get personalized Nutella jars at the cafe. My son's birthday was coming up and he absolutely loves Nutella, so I made the 25 minute walk from my hotel to the cafe to get him a jar which I would take back home on the plane. The inside is crammed to the gills - it's difficult to maneuver between the tables, luggage, chairs, displays, etc. There seemed to be a lot of staff - runners and bussers - yet it all just seemed like chaos frankly. I ordered the jar and also a crepe since I had come all that way. The cashier handed me my receipt but gave no instructions as to how to get my jar. After I asked, she pointed me to go stand near a printer but staff was bustling around and no one seemed to have "ownership" of the station. I finally pointedly asked someone to help and he kind of grunted at me and then fiddled with the computer and printer and then just walked away. He never said a word to me. Finally someone else walked over and I snagged him. The original guy came back and then the two of them got snippy with each other about who was supposed to do what. I don't know. I just want my jar. Help me help you. The sticker got printed and put on the jar and it didn't lay flat so there were creases in the label. At this point, I was just really over this. I had regrets. I then overheard someone (staff person, customer, the universe, a voice in my head) say "Nutella is considered a liquid by TSA so it can only go in checked baggage." My $10 purchase had now become a $50 one. I had even more regrets. The crepe was fine. Not walk 25 minutes to get one good, but fine. I had my Nutella in their paper shopping bag and stepped out onto Michigan Avenue where a torrential downpour had begun. I started my 25 minute walk back, umbrella free, in the cold rain until the paper bag got so wet that the bottom fell out and my Nutella skipped down the sidewalk ahead of me. I debated just abandoning it. Nothing good had happened in my life since I had bought that Nutella. I picked it up, carried it the rest of the way, and then gave it away to someone. Sorry dear son. On my third attempt to try this place, I finally decided I'd wait if necessary. The first two attempts, the wait was over an hour. If you think this is worth waiting an hour, you're nuts! On my third attempt, no line, hooray! So myself and my friend walked up with our two strollers. First, just as we were about to open the door, a security guard comes out and tells us we aren't entering the right way, we need to walk through the stantions. Read, there was no line. Way to be pompous. So also, there aren't any ramps for strollers or wheelchairs. The place is small, seating is very limited. The menu is limited, yet the wait for food is ridiculously long. Prices are outrageous. It is a tourist trap for sure. If you like Nutella, go and buy a jar and make this stuff at home. Save yourself the trouble, the money and the regret! read more

2.5 stars. The hour wait is not worth it. I pass by the cafe all the time and there's always a line. I mean there's a hype, I gotta try it. I came in when it was sprinkling outside and there was a long line inside. Additionally, once my friend got there, the security guard wouldn't even let her in. The line inside isn't short, but there's definitely a lot more room for people to come and to get out of the rain. Next complaint would be that there are only two registers, and one of them is having issues. The problem isn't so much the two registers but the fact that if they only have two registers then they should be extremely efficient and be working as quickly as they can. Both cashiers, and even the people working to make the food, were taking their sweet time. I wouldn't have a problem if they were being super personable with each customer, but that simply was not the case. Then we get to the food. We ordered the Nutella and Strawberries crepe and the Panzanella Fruit Salad with Yogurt. I enjoyed the crepe, but wasn't anything special. You could easily find that at any other crepe place. They probably should have gone with a bigger space given the high demand. I was a bit confused by the menu. I also didn't like how they deliver the food. I found the opening of this to be too overhyped. We got here before 11a on a Saturday and there was a wait outside the door. The line out the door was about 15 minutes. Once inside, the line was another 10 mins, loops around a center beverage console and then around the main counter. What is off putting is that you have a lady inside the door (employee) who is aggressively telling patrons to stand right against the counter. One inch over and she is already asking you to step over. I get that she's trying to curb foot traffic but guests are not blocking the walkway by stepping over an inch to look at the menu. For the record, this did not happen to me but to the 2 guests in front of us. I think there's still a lot of growing pains to learn. The menu has typical cafe items, pastries, regular coffees. Most of the items were regular sandwiches or salads, and nothing signature. I only ordered a croissant french toast, but my husband also ordered a crepe, a salad dish, and some pastries. The food legit took over half an hour to get to us (and I'm not exaggerating, as I looked at the receipt time and the time I started this review). My husband got up and nicely asked an employee if this wait is typical and that employee was fairly short and said "yes it's typical it's very busy". Please note: manners are free. That being said, we had 2 SUPER nice servers interact with us after we got our meal. Also to note, the menu isn't amazing by any means. Nothing on it makes it stand out as a destination cafe aside from drizzling nutella over your danish or crepe. The same nutella that comes out of the bottle you have at home. As for the interior, there's an upper seating area with some tables, benches, and these circular lounge seating as well. The main floor has counter seating and some tables. Went here for the grand opening. What a mess! There was a ton of people. They advertise that they were giving the first 400 hundred people a meal. After waiting in line for hours what we did receive was a croissant filled with Nutella, a jar of Nutella and a Nutella promotional bag if you answered a question correctly. They rushed you in and out so quickly it was very hard to actually see anything of the place but I was able to take a couple of pictures. I asked for a menu and they told me that they were at the door. I did not receive a menu looks like mostly pastries and I did see some panini sandwiches on a board. However since this is was before they officially opened I don't know what the food is actually going to be like, however, I will return and try the food. It's really cool that they opened the first Nutella Cafe in Chicago and I'm sure that the city of Chicago will support them. read more

I honestly liked Nutella when it was inside Eataly and not in its own store that tries to act like it's a club purposely making people stand outside in the cold to wait. Most items you could honestly just make at home. The few I would actually go for are the crepes, croissant, and gelato. I'm glad I finally got to try this place after it opened up about a year ago. There was a short, quick line to get into the cafe on this Saturday night even though the place was pretty big. Upon recommendation, we ordered a nutella crepe with strawberries and waffle with bananas, and both with nutella gelato scoops on top. These were both delicious but super rich and filling. These were big portions too, so two people could easily share one dish. Next time, I would definitely like to try a milkshake- these looked amazing too! read more

Being a lover of Nutella much like anyone else without a nut allergy, I was immediately drawn into the restaurant to see what was offered. I wasn't all too impressed by the options on the menu - most of it looked like items that you could find at any brunch place. Overall, the cafe just didn't seem to have a specialty item that made it unique from all the other places that serve items with Nutella. To top that, I felt that the cafe was a tad expensive, which is what one would expect in a tourist trap I guess. We ended up ordering a Nutella crepe with strawberries and bananas and it was quite tasty. If you're visiting Chicago and are a fan of Nutella, I would definitely recommend you check the place out - the interior design is really aesthetic. The entrance is stairs only - no wheelchair ramp at all. I had a child in a stroller, and thankfully an employee helped me carry the stroller down the three steps. However, once completely inside of the cafe, I realized that the only way to get to the exit was up a secondary flight of stairs (probably about 6 steps, maybe more.) They have a service elevator but it is very, VERY small. It definitely cannot fit modern electric wheelchairs. It's also not labeled and it doesn't look like an elevator- my nine year old son found it on complete accident. Only one of the employees knew how to use it, and my stroller and I just barely fit into it. I'm genuinely shocked at how anti-disabled this establishment is designed to be. Thankfully I only had a stroller, but I can't imagine how upsetting it would be for a wheelchair-bound person to be denied the experience of such a rare cafe. On to the food - I ordered the nutella Gelato, and that was the best item out of everything we got. 10/10. We got the nutella and strawberries for my pickier son- it was nothing special. I got the banana bread, and for as expensive as it was, there wasn't much to it. It was two very thin slices of bread with nutella drizzle and sliced bananas. The bread itself was bland and it relied on the nutella and fruit for all of the flavor. I wouldn't order it again. We also got a bag of the short bread cookies with nutella inside, and those were pretty good. Overall, I would come back for the Gelato, but I absolutely would not wait outside for more than 10 minutes to get inside. Are people really waiting over an hour for this?? Definitely more of a gimmick but you can't go wrong with Nutella. If the line isn't too long, why not? We got the Nutella on toasted baguette bread and were pleasantly surprised to see little pieces of hazelnuts on top. It was a little dry and dusty - definitely needed some water to wash it all down but it's hard to mess up Nutella and bread. I just felt it was kinda grimy inside - there's a lot of traffic and the tables weren't super clean, but it's near the Bean and good for an afternoon pick me up. read more
