Our 30 year old IMA-4406 series Nutone finally bit the dust. A little detective work led to a discovery that the transformers (801T) were both dead. Scouring the internet for replacement transformers, they are nowhere to be found. Do we now remove these "bookends" from the wall, patch, and paint? Not yet - we came across a how-to repair the transformer video, but replacing the fuse within the unit is beyond our expertise. I moved to a new home a few months ago and found that the home came with a nutone intercom system. It worked great initially but then gradually went downhill. I researched and found that there are very few, if any, service techs who will come out to the home. I found this company and after talking with Chris, watched the video he sent and removed the master station. It is not hard to take it out even though it may seem intimidating. I mailed it and he was able to complete the repairs with a quick turnaround. I own a NuTone 5006 intercom/radio system and after 18 years it finally stopped working. I did the right thing and called NuTone and was given the name of an authorized San Jose service center. I took it in and after 5 weeks of testing and replacing some components when I re-installed it, the same problem persisted. I went on the internet and did more searching and found that this NuTone product is notorious for difficult problems. Somehow I found NorthSide Service in Danville and read about the miracles that Christopher was able to perform on these units. Broken system in hand I gave it over to Chris. 4 days later I got a call from his office to say that it was repaired and really working this time. I took it home, reinstalled it and it works perfectly. Christopher was as technical as he needed to be depending on the customer and very organized. He did easily where others failed. Our 20+ year old NuTone system wasn't working since we bought our condo by the beach in Los Angeles. After finding Northside Service we sent the main unit in for repair. Chris called and his first question was "Do you live by the beach?". Most all of the components had been corroded and in need of replacement. Well in only about a week and a half, it's now back and installed (thank you also for those videos) and working perfectly! We never knew how much we would like having the system working until it actually worked! Compared to installing an entirely new system or just sealing over the holes by removing it all together...getting it repaired was the best choice. After a year and a half of having walk downstairs to open the door in our apartment building every time there is a delivery our vintage NuTone system is working perfectly. We've had a couple different companies come out to try and repair the door release. They gave a variety of reason for the problem, left a bill for a couple hundred dollars and made little to no difference. The only common diagnosis: you need to buy a $4000 system from us a replace the whole thing. Ready to give up and begin the battle of pestering the landlord to drop the coin (the intercom and door bell functions still worked so he was not that motivated to do the upgrade), I made a last ditch effort of calling NuTone tech support even though they no longer service the 478 amplifier system. Through a serendipitous serious of events I landed on Chris' youtube channels and gleaned a real understanding of how the system functions for the first time. I spoke with him over the phone and he walked me through an assessment of our problem and gave super detailed answers to my questions. He refurbished our 478 super fast, the whole thing took less than a week with shipping. What really makes this company great is that Chris fielded more calls from me when I discovered that the previous company had installed a door release that is incompatible with our system. He doesn't work on strike plates, but he gave sage advice on where to look for one. Then when I received a DR2 release that works (!!!), but was too big for the narrow metal frame on our door he suggested I try a commercial glass company. This was so helpful because I had already tried a bunch of locksmiths and security companies who would not do the job since I purchased the parts myself and it was too small a job for them. The end message here is Northside Service Co provides service way beyond what I would expect. Chris seemed like he was genuinely interested in troubleshooting my system and was able to convey his vast knowledge to a novice amateur vintage intercom repairman without making me feel like an idiot. And now we have a 25 year old system that works like new. read more

One day, seemingly without warning, my Nutone intercom lost power completely. I looked inside the unit but it's super complicated in there and I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. I called some other intercom repair guy I found on Yelp and suffice it to say that he was neither competent nor honest about his pricing. Luckily I found Nutone Northside Service Company. I called them up and explained what went on with the other guy and what was wrong with my intercom. They were very kind and essentially diagnosed the problem over the phone. It turns out there were some warning signs that I didn't even recognize (and the other guy never asked about). After speaking with them and learning that they are authorized service dealers, I felt confident that they could do the repair. I shipped them my intercom (which had been disconnected by the other guy) and they called me right away when they received it. They were accurate with their repair timeframe and, sure enough, the problem they suspected over the phone was indeed the problem with the intercom. They got the right parts, fixed it up, and promptly called me to set up a time to reinstall the repaired unit. The guy that came out was very friendly and professional. He got the job done quickly and showed me exactly what part failed and how they made slight modifications to the unit that would help prevent another failure like that in the future. He also checked all the other call/response boxes in the house to make sure they were set properly. He even gave me a tutorial on how to use the intercom since I am a second owner of the house and never learned the features. The repair was pretty expensive, but it was within the range of their original estimate that they quoted me. I was just glad that they were straightforward about the price and explained the various components of the total cost. If you have a Nutone and it is having issues, please do yourself a favor and call these guys and not someone who is unauthorized and claims to do it all. These guys are incredibly knowledgeable about the Nutone intercom models and the problems commonly associated with them, which means a way more efficient and cost-effective repair for you. read more

Unable to obtain local repair or parts for a defunct 20 year-old combined Nutone doorbell and intercom, I found Northside Service on the internet. After a detailed conversation with an obviously knowledgable person, a workaround appeared possible. He (Chris) called back a few days later with the great news that he had found an unused replacement with a minor replacement part which he had already installed. Faster+better+cheaper aren't supposed to coincide, but they did here. In addition to successfully solving a problem, these folks provided exceptional service without associated exorbitant cost. read more
