Locally owned, operated Oahu Grill located in Kaimuki on 11th Ave and shares the same paid lot as Earls Kaimuki, Himalayan Kitchen and the Moke's Kaimuki. Parking is easy and super cheap. The two-item combo plates is the go to! Get two choices of any entrees and get that poi/rice, lomi salmon and haupia that you have been wanting! Absolutely love the kalua pig, the smoked meat with onions is delicious, and the squid luau is a MUST HAVE. There's a fair amount of seating space but if you're in a hurry, I made a phone order for two, two item combos leaving work in Downtown and by the time I got there, they had it ready for me to check out and be on my way home. I love supporting small local businesses, especially authentic Hawaiian food spots. Some friends and I decided to try it out. We ordered takeout for this quarantine season. Overall food was ok. Lau lau was good, nice portion of meat, fat a lu'au leaves. Squid lu'au was 5/5 'ono! What made me give them three stars was the disappointing haupia at the end. When eating onolicious Hawaiian food, one looks forward to the haupia after eating all the savory yummy goodness first. However, we were all sad because the haupia lacked the sweet, creamy coconut flavor. The texture was off as well. My friend ordered the 3 entree plate with lechon and the meat seemed either old or overcooked. It was chewy and other pieces hard as rock, almost inedible. She ended up throwing the lechon away :( I hate seeing food go to waste but I tired the lechon myself and was super disappointed. I would recommend this place for anyone looking for Hawaiian food, I just would not recommend the lechon or haupia. Avoid those two items, unless they change their recipe. read more

This used to be my favorite place to get Hawaiian food with my grandma, but after the last time I've tried to order from them I will never go back. I went to my grandma's house on Friday September 20 and she recommended we call Oahu Grill. I called at around 4pm and a lady answered and pretended she could not hear me when I said hello multiple times and hung up. No big deal, I called right back and the person at Oahu Grill picked up the phone, set it on the counter, and walked away. I heard all of this and was very confused, but my grandma really wanted Hawaiian food for dinner so I called again. Line busy. Thought they must be busy, so around 630pm we walked to the Japanese restaurant right next door. I looked through the glass door of Oahu Grill and there were people working there and ZERO customers. -100 stars for service. Hope they go out of business soon so a new restaurant can open here. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. My friend and I came here for the first time and the menu made us drool before we even got there. The ambiance was very laid back as you'd expect from a local joint, we got to sit anywhere we wanted to. Server was super friendly, and on it, and we got our orders in right away. We got two combo plates (both lechon and laulau with rice) and it was so good. The lechon was crunchy and amazing, my friend said hers had a lot of fat, still delicious, but mine had a good ratio of meat to fat. The laulau didn't have a lot of fat inside which I LOVED. Sometimes with laulau you just bite into a whole thing of fat and it's a turn off but every bite was so good, I didn't want to stop. Finally I had to tap out but only because I wanted to save room for the haupia and dessert. My friend got the Kona Coffee ice cream and she said she'd come back here just for the ice cream alone. I got the Kulolo ice cream and it was a haupia ice cream with bits of taro inside and it was amazing. I ate it alongside the haupia that comes with the meal and it was the best combo EVER (i wanted more haupia but was too shame to ask). This was the first meal of our trip and it hit the spot. Yesterday we ordered the beef stew (daily special) served with rice, and potato & crab pasta salad. My husband ordered the combo plate with lechon and laulau - comes with rice(or poi), lomi salmon, and haupia. Laulau was tasty and filling. Lechon had a mix of the fatty pieces and my favorite crunchy ends. It comes with a tomato/onion dipping sauce which is pretty tasty. The stew was comforting and reminded me of what we used to eat growing up. Today I ordered the special (chicken papaya) for take out with a side order of kalua pork. I didn't wait more than 5-7 mins for the food around 11:30am. The kalua pork was smokey and tender. Did takeout for the second time. Pork laulau was very good. They don't offer chicken laulau at this time. Some of the best squid luau that we've had. Poi was okay. We would return when we're in town. Parking lot is pretty big, but can still get filled, as it's shared with a number of popular restaurants and stores. The Hawaiian food is the real thing, and very well done. A quaint little restaurant in Kaimuki serving Hawaiian Food, Smoked Meats, Lechon (roast pork with crispy skin). The small Lau Lau had no taste maybe because it did not have any salted butter fish in it. The Poi was very Fresh. The Staff very friendly and Attentive. The Lechon portion was generous and delicious. Too small a place to hold a gathering. We're a couple of "Main Landers" and this is our first time in Hawaii and wanted to have some authentic Hawaii'n food. We always try the local cuisine whenever we go somewhere new. We drove passed a place on our travels earlier in the day with a ton of people around it. After looking up what it was we wanted to find out how it tasted. So after our hike at Diamond Head, based on the reviews, we decided to give this place a try. Very friendly staff who explained which were the most authentic dishes. My husband had the combo 2 meal with Kailua Pig (absolutely delicious), the Laulau (very good also) with Poi and I had the combo 2 meal with the Squid Lu'au, Laulau and rice. I enjoyed the Squid Lu'au (which was very filling)) and couldn't tap into the Laulau hardly at all. Which was great for my husband, because he still had room to spare! In case you don't know either - Poi is made from the taro root and is about the most non-descriptive food ever. It was served as a side. It wasn't bad, wasn't good, it was just there...mostly as a filler. Our server said it is usually mixed in with whatever else you are eating, which made sense. Apparently, one way to eat it, is by letting it ferment a little bit. This would give it a little tang, but don't know if the flavor would change at all. Very good food and it came out fast! We tried the following items: Legend: 3/3 - No issues. 2/3 - Needs improvement. 1/3 - Would not reorder. Lau Lau 2/3 On the dry side, and lacking the umami taste of better lau laus around the island. Would suggest adding in a chunk of salted butterfish, and a cube of pork or beef fat to improve the dish. The reheating method also plays a part in keeping the lau lau from drying out. Lechon Kawali 2/3 Would love to have it be on the crispier side. Right now it's a bit underwhelming. Long Rice 2/3 No complaints besides the saltiness. We can always add Hawaiian salt at the table, please don't oversalt in the kitchen. Tripe Stew 1/3 Same as the long rice. I could not finish the stew due to the saltiness. Salt Meat Watercress 3/3 Great menu item. It's a nice treat to see this on the menu. Does not disappoint. Portions. The 2-choice plate is enough for a single meal. 3-choice only recommended to share, or for big eaters. Menu is easy to order off of, as everything is listed ala carte. The combination plates include rice/poi, lomi salmon, and slice haupia. Will give them another shot in the future. But not a place I would visit too often due to none of the dishes really standing out. And the prices are definitely up there. Excellent all around. We had the Laulau, Kalua Pig and Squid Luau. EVERYTHING was good. The poi is fresh and sourced from a small batch local company. Everything else is made in house. Even the chili pepper water was excellent. And I'm pretty hard to please. The worst part was parking in the municipal lot. Just don't go during lunch and dinner rush if possible. YAYYY!!! Oahu Grill is a much needed addition to the Kaimukī area. It's brand new and their official grand opening is 10-20-2019. The restaurant is located on the first floor below Himalayan Kitchen. Tons of metered parking. I came here with a friend who found them on Yelp. Very humble space with new fixtures and about 15+ tables for dining in. On this visit, it was quiet with just two other tables of guests. The spot appears to be run by a husband and wife team. The name is sort of misleading, because it's a traditional Hawaiian food restaurant, not a grilling joint. Hawaiian food was delicious. Just have to go in and try it. None of it was complicated and everything was plated nicely and placed in bowls just like you'd serve in a local home. I'm hopeful this place will thrive! Congrats! read more

Yum yum yum! Oahu Grill is relatively new & located in Kaimuki next to Happy Days. You can order take out or dine in. We made the mistake of ordering first then realized we should have sat down first... oops! Anyways, we were greeting with a warm welcome and handed a menu to look over the food. We decided to get a combo plate of chicken long rice & kalua pig & since it was a Friday, we also got the garlic shrimp. You also get rice or poi, lomi salmon & a square of haupia. The chicken long rice was good with a strong ginger flavor & the kalua pig was season perfectly. A tip is to take the haupia off right away - accidentally left it too long & it ended up tasting like lomi salmon. The star of the show was the garlic shrimp. I love that the shells were on so the shrimp stayed moist and the shells soaked in the garlic butter. While we were eating the owner came around to ask us how the food was. I've had takeout from Oahu Grill prior to Covid19 and I love their food. However, after today, I'm not sure I will go back. On my last visit prior to Covid19, everything I ordered was good, except for their Crab Potato Mac salad, it was slightly sour tasting, but I let it pass. Today, I was craving Tripe Stew and I remembered how good their's was. I decided to get two orders and was so looking forward to having it for dinner. However, after heating up the first order, I was so disappointed, it was thick, very salty and not at all like how I remembered it. It tasted like a shredded beef tripe with the potatoes & carrots overcooked in a stew. It was obviously not fresh tripe stew, more like made a few days ago and reheated a few times. I have one more order, that if I don't get sick tonight, I may eat tomorrow. Can't let food go to waste! I realize with Covid19 and only doing takeout, you may not make a fresh batch every day. Very disappointed and I rarely write a bad review. The people that run Oahu Grill are very nice. Sadly, they really disappointed me today.
