One of my homies - Stan O. came back home for a visit recently, and I was lucky enough to meet up with him and one of my other homies - Mark C. for some local kine GRINDZ. In da 808, there are so many different types of grindz because of our diverse ethnicities living in da 808. Gang, we are truly the melting pot of the world! After whipping out my phone and surfing on Yelp to look for a place to eat, we came to the conclusion of going to - "Oahu Grill", because what local boy doesn't like Hawaiian food? Located in the heart of Kaimuki, you can find Oahu Grill in the same business complex as Roritos, & Himalayan Kitchen. Best way to find Oahu Grill? Just park your car in the Kaimuki Municipal parking lot and look for Roritos. Upon entering the doorway by Roritos, continue walking straight down towards the end of the walkway, as you will see a door entrance. I initially had a difficult time finding Oahu Grill, as I did not see any outside signage by the door, but upon entering, I realized I was at the right place! Upon being seated, we looked over the menu and my friend Stan & I both ended up ordering the Tuesday "Daily Local Special" which was the Chicken Hekka. The Chicken Hekka dish came with two scoops of white rice, & a scoop of potato crab salad. My other homie ended up getting the Tripe Stew. The Tripe Stew dish is seasoned in a tomato based broth with carrots, celery & potatoes. The plate came with two scoops white rice, lomi salmon & haupia (coconut pudding). What can I say about the grub? Da buggah was ono! If there was one thing I noticed about my Chicken Hekka that could use an improvement, was to add a little bit more chicken (as the dish lacked chicken). The long rice was seasoned nicely, and the potato crab salad was fabulous! Now if you know Bruddah Fran, he no likey mayonnaise, so for him to eat that potato crab salad says alot about how good the potato crab salad was! My friend Mark C. enjoyed his Tripe Stew. I hope to come back here one day on a Saturday, as I saw they have Shoyu Chicken for their Saturday "Daily Local Special". Me CRAZY for Shoyu Chicken!!! Lol! Ok - have to admit, we didn't have our hopes up when we walked in and were the only people there- it also looked like it could use some direction in decor? Storage boxes out of dining area? But WOW what great food! And our server was super nice, friendly, and attentive, but not overbearing! kahlua pork was ON POINT, smoked pork with sautéed onions was sublime- and chicken long rice had deep flavor, moist chicken and terrific noodles. Poi was so fresh and delicate- lomi salmon also fresh ,tender and tomato forward - crab/potato salad was amazing- wished we could have taken home a gallon- and the homemade haupia was incredible!!! I have not heard of this place until my uncle mentioned it so wanted to give them a try. First off the location is not the most obvious but if you know where Himalayan Kitchen is, they are right below. Enter the building from the paid parking lot side and head straight in. There is a good amount of tables inside, bigger than I thought I would be. You can get Hawaiian food along with daily local specials. I had a hard time deciding what to get in this first visit so I opted for the three item combo of squid lūʻau, chicken long rice and kalua pig. The plates also come with lomi salmon, haupia and choice of rice or poi. The food came out very fast! The kalua pig was good and not sitting in oil. Not the best I've had but not bad at all. The chicken long rice had thicker noodles than I'm used to but they made the dish more hearty. I appreciated it wasn't just chicken broth and chicken or too salty. Don't take this the wrong way but it tasted homemade which I liked! A little bit of ginger would make it even better but that's just a personal preference. The star was the squid lūʻau! I hate overly sweet squid lūʻau so I was happy to find theirs wasn't, just using the natural subtle sweetness from the coconut milk. You can taste the lūʻau leaves, creaminess from the coconut milk and tender squid. Definitely a must get main dish! The lomi salmon was fresh with diced tomatoes that had a nice bit of crunch to them. Also not too salty which is a plus. At first I thought the poi was chocolate ice cream! It is served in a ice cream bowl and is thicker in consistency than regular poi. It's thick enough to keep its shape but not tough. Definitely not watery or runny so just a warning it may not be what you're used to. You actually get more poi this way being concentrated so that's fine by me! The haupia had some lumps but it was still enjoyable to end the meal with. As is the norm with Hawaiian food it is not cheap so you want to make sure it tastes good! I like that the food doesn't taste mass produced and just the way I like it not being too salty or sweet. You can always add more salt or sugar if you want, but it does not work the other way around. I'm looking forward to trying the laulau, chicken hekka, smoked meat, beef stew, etc! read more

Workplace Wednesday lunch was brought to us by Oahu Grill. Sadly their chicken hekkah was not a special on Wednesday. I got the laulau plate with poi. Laulau was good, didn't give me the itchy throat after like some laulau does. Big chunks of pork in there but also a lot of fat. The poi was a little sour but good. Wish I got more of it. I am not a fan of salmon so my lomi lomi salmon went to a coworker. The haupia was odd because it tasted like sweet coconut candy rather than the overly creamy coconut haupia is normally. The texture was also like eating a very crumbly cake. A coworker got the chicken long rice and said it lacked flavor. Another coworker got the squid luau and said it wasn't sweet enough. I add Iced Tea, while the Wahines are ok with Kaimuki water. Once we ordered the service actually picked up, but I did notice Auntie was now taking charge, so... It was nice that everything was served within a minute of each other which allowed us to take our Yelp pro photos and dig in pretty quickly lol! This was my first time in Hawaii, trying Hawaiian food and let me tell you. This place did not disappoint. The server was super friendly and had a nice conversation with him. He explained some of the popular menu items and recommendations which was the kalua pork and the crispy pork belly, pictured below. Both were super tasty, tender, full of flavor and overall delicious. The vibe of the place was super chill, quiet, and very home feeling. Seasoning was just right as some places are to generous with the salt. We were the only ones there and they had 2 workers so it was not a problem. Dinner with my Bay besties, Eric R. and Mila E. resulted in us ending up here since both of them were visiting from out of town. With it being one of my friend's first time in Hawaii she wanted to try local food outside of Waikiki. I went for the Ala Carte Laulau, my friend got the Mini Kalua Pig, and my other friend got the Local Special of the day which was Shoyu Chicken. The Laulau was relatively big, the taro leaves were softly steamed, and the pork was juicy but pretty salty. My friends enjoyed their dishes and ate them but out of the two plates, they preferred the daily special. This restaurant is very lowkey. From right when we stepped in it was quiet, simple, and very casual. Service although nice was average and leisurely. Our server seemed a little aloof--but was still very kind! The food itself came out faster than expected and we were occasionally checked in on. The time was fine but nothing was memorable other than the company I spent it with. O'ahu Grill is located in the same shopping plaza as Himalayan Kitchen and Moke's. Parking is available in the shared and paid lot in the back. The restaurant is located on the bottom floor, a little tucked away but more spacious than presumed. I use to love O'ahu Grill until two years ago. Last year I went and the food was not good, I tried again last week and it's still not good. Their chicken long rice liked and tasted like plastic, their haupia was hard and stiff. Their lomi and lau lau was decent. Prior to 2023 their Hawaiian food was soooo ono! Everything use to be good. Walking in, I was shocked to find that we were the only customers there at 11am Sunday morning. We stood at the front for quite some time before anybody acknowledged us. I requested that we at the top where we could have the view of the road but Lady said that we had to sit somewhere else because she was busy doing something there. Ummm okay! After we placed our order, I was a bit upset that a girl came in right after and they seated her at the area I wanted to be seated at. For whatever reason, it kinda made me feel some type of way. My youngest order Kalua pig, and his response for that was that it was a bit hard and crunchy so I'm assuming it was a bit dried out. My oldest had ordered laulau and beef stew but received laulau and tripe stew. He said that there were too much potatoes versus the Tripe itself. Husband ordered Pipikaula and smoked meat. he said that the smoked meat needed a little more flavor to it. I had ordered the Pipikaula and laulau. For the laulau, I just ate the luau leaves because I don't eat pork, and that was seasoned well but a bit dried out and the pipikaula needed flavor. I doused it with lots of shoyu and chili pepper water. I ordered poi and it was so sour to my liking but I feel that it was pounded in-house. I did not enjoy the haupia. Today's special was beef tomato but @ 5pm there wasn't any. :( We ended up trying the tripe stew. All the food was good and our waitress was able to create a family style dinner with the other food we wanted and the amount of people in our party. We had squid luau, chicken long rice, rice, lau lau, pipkaula short ribs, beef w/ watercress, potato crab mac salad, tripe stew and haupia. All for just about $100. I will definitely put this on my list for a go to place if Im feeling Hawaiian food thats delicious but also easy on the wallet. It's been awhile but I went this late afternoon after work to get an early dinner. Ordered takeout - a mini Laulau Plate for $12.00 which comes with a choice of poi or lomi lomi salmon...I substituted with Haupia, one of my fave desserts. I asked the cashier about the sub and she was nice to offer the Haupia as an option. A nice portion and just as tasty as any laulau that I've had from a restaurant or grocery store. Haupia was okay...even mediocre haupia is still pretty damn good. Open for dine-in but the dining area was empty. Hours are 1100 to 2100 daily. Okay, full disclosure. At first I was going to give a rating of 2 stars based on my DoorDash experience of getting lunch from here. But I took a look at what I paid (see picture) compared to what the actual price is on the menu, and I noticed each item was $5 higher than the actual menu price.. so I do not recommend using door dash! Lol Okay, now that I've got that out of the way, let's get to the food One of my ultimate favorite Hawaiian dishes is squid luau.. I've had it from basically every place that sells it on the island :) since I haven't tried here yet, I (of course) had to get it. SQUID LUAU: ($14 on menu): wow, for an ala carte item, the price is pretty steep for this. The size is pretty small (easily fit in the palm of my hand), and was the same size of a regular at Highway inn (albeit Highway inn's squid luau is half the price lol). Hoping the steep price was worth it, I was disappointed :( while there were big chunks of squid, I didn't not taste any sweetness from the coconut milk at all. In fact, the squid luau was pretty bitter GARLIC SHRIMP PLATE: ($19 menu price): this is a Friday special and bring that I love garlic shrimp, I decided to indulge and get this too.. I mean, it's Friday right? Upon opening it, the shrimp were kind of small, and there were 8 total. Unfortunately, I wanted more garlic or garlic sauce... and I felt the shrimp was mediocre and left me wanting garlic shrimp from elsewhere to get my garlic fix. Also, the scoop of rice they gave me was undercooked :( some bits were crunchy.. ew So overall, despite reading good reviews of this place, I was sorely disappointed. With high prices, I expected the food to be delicious, but I felt everything was kind of bland and the fact that the white rice was over cooked as well added to my disappointment. read more

This was my first time experiencing authentic Hawaiian food and what a great experience it was! It's a small location. Not too many tables and the food came out very quick. I'm super picky so trying something new was a little nerve wracking for me. I got a combination plate with smoked meat and chicken long rice. The smoked meat was seasoned to perfection. The chicken king rice ended up being like a chicken noodle soup and it was divine. It also came with a few other sides. Our waitress was very kind and explained the food in detail to me when she realized I wasn't from Hawaii. It comes with poi which comes from a tarot root. It's very plain on its own however when paired with the smoked meat it was a nice balance. It also came with haupia which was a small coconut dessert and it was the perfect sweetness to top off a great meal. The BEST customer service I've ever had! The staff was so kind and hospitable and really made our dining experience at O'ahu Grill so memorable. I'm usually not a huge fan of coconut but loved the creamy haupia and couldn't get enough of it. My little one was getting a little restless during our meal and the staff was beyond INCREDIBLE in helping to calm her down. They came out and brought her a personal sized bowl of some chicken long rice on the house and she absolutely loved it! They even packed her a little container of it to-go for later. I was so touched by their hospitality and generosity and how it felt like they treated us like family. We also got to try their kahlua pork, tripe and squid luau. I've never had squid luau before and oh my goodness, I feel like I've been missing out my whole life! I LOVED their squid luau! If you love taro, you will definitely enjoy this dish as the taro leaf flavor was very prominent and delicious mixed with the creamy coconut milk. I cannot begin to explain what a pleasant experience we had at O'ahu Grill for their yummy food and amazing customer service. We will definitely be recommending it to all our family and friends who visit the island, and can't wait to come back again! read more
