This place is the ultimate dive bar. I go here when I just want to drink. Bring cash because they don't take card. I walked in one Thursday afternoon and the place was just packed. It can be intimidating to people who aren't regulars since everyone here seems to know each other. I've never exactly figured out what's "Irish" about this bar other than the name. That and it's full of hardcore drinkers. One time I was getting off work really late... like 6am late and I was totally stressed out and needed a drink and thought, I wonder if any bars are open yet? I went by a few of my other regular spots and everything was closed, but I drove by O'Connells and the door was cracked a bit so I thought I'd check it out. There were about 3 or 4 people at the bar who gave me a weird look (I was at least 20-30 years younger than any of them), but I took a seat and stuck up a conversation. Though I do miss when there was a few less tvs. But I'm sure it relaxes the clientele later in the night. The old bartender who passed away was the best. Oh O'Connels, you used to be my neighborhood bar. I have been coming to this place for 6 years or so, at one time, daily. But as often as I have tried to defend you from friends who claim the bartenders are shitbags, and the owner is a jerk; I can no longer defend you with indisputable honesty. I have had too many incidences that require me to look at the way things have been from an unbiased perspective. I have been treated like shit by most of the bartenders at some point in time, I have felt like they were my friends and completely been disappointed by their blatant disrespect. I have watched them ridicule and badmouth patrons and newcomers. I have been spoken to like a 12 year old child by the owner, Mountain, after asking for help when all but one pool ball was released from the pool table. I have had music that I have paid for be silenced by bartenders who render it unfit for their taste. I will always go here, because I do have a soft spot for people even when they treat me like shit. I like a lot of the people who regular this bar, and they have a nice setup for sports. O'Connels to me is like an bully older brother. One who will hand you a beer and then quickly lock you in a closet while you drink it. Bitter sweet feelings. I feel like all the bartenders at the core are good people, I think Mountain creates a certain misery which trickles down to the tenders. *I will always have a soft spot for this place, I can understand why people end their date early with O'Connels. read more

I came here with this guy I was seeing. They have a few pool tables, shuffleboard, and a generally nice crowd of people. The people vary from some down home country boys to older men and sets of hipsters. This is another one of those neighborhood bars with a great bartender, Murphy. read more

So this place has its ups and downs. For the most part I love it. The bartenders are nice but if you think you can get in w/o an ID or w/ an expired one you are kidding yourself. They follow the rules. My only complaint about this place is the recent influx of the younger louder crowd. Im young but I prefer OCs when there is a decent amount of people who just want to relax and have a few. One time my friend and I went in there and the term "standing room only" was an understatement. For the guys sorority girls are a plus. For me..not at all. I'm not a bar-goer. In fact, this type of place is sort of a turn off. I love Irish/British Pubs, but this is really just a dive bar with an Irish name. The pool tables were what brought me here: I love playing pool. One table was out of service (they have two). A couple guys wanted to challenge us to a game, and since we were not playing competitively, we lost the table. There went my dream of playing pool for the evening. Oh well. read more

This is my neighborhood bar and I love it. I've read some of the previous reviews and chances are, if you've gotten the boot from here, you've deserved it. I've been coming here for over 3 years now and am always taken care of and have never had a negative experience. This place is full of great bartenders, a great juke box, shuffleboard & full of personalities and characters. It's always a good time. Luv it. They make really good drinks there and take their time like when they made my martini the bartender did everything the right way. Now there's another there; I think he's got a little hat and a big beard. He has to learn a little more about being in public. He's friendly when you say hi to him but otherwise I think this may be the guy that people complain about. He's definitely does not know how to act in public, he has a real negative sour attitude but I just come in all happy boisterous and I talk to him and I smile. He doesn't smile I still smile that's how I have a good time don't let that guy bother you he makes great drinks they all are wonderful there in that sense. Besides I go a bar to enjoy myself not to enjoy the bartender. And when they're jerks I just talk back to them and act silly that's what you have to do Other than that the three cheesy atmosphere which is nice the music selection is great especially when you put that app on the phone and you could choose any music you want it's cheaper than dropping money in the machine. Best thing is it's right on fourth Street and I only live a couple blocks away this is the perfect local bar. Lots of nice people read more

how did you not notice on your way in that you were out of your element? the fact that there's no "Room" in the bars name should have been your first tip. it's funny how every bad review on here has nothing to do with drinking. if you wanna be seen by other cool kids, go to where they're at. who cares if the people standing out in front of the bar don't look as brooklyn as you. silly me, i go there to drink. that said, if you drink enough of the $2.25 high lifes and $2.50 jameson shots, your inflated drunkin' ego will think you're the coolest kid in the bar anyhow. they have a shuffle board, two pool tables, bar nut vending machines, internet jukebox, and 20 flatscreens (none of which play skate videos). as others have mentioned, get in good with the bartenders, as you can buy to-go 6, 12, and 18 packs right up to closing time. read more

You gotta love O'Connell's. Jameson is their drink of the day, every day. The drinks are dirt cheap, and the bloody marys are awesome. They have a nice lady that makes the spicy green beans they garnish them with. Sometimes when you tell the bartenders your order, they will tell you to wait a fucking second while they take a smoke break. My kind of place. There's almost always somewhere to sit, and I've never had a problem with parking. If you ever find yourself in there on a weekday before 2PM, you are in for an experience. The regulars are only too happy to tell you about why they hate the other regulars (at the other side of the bar) because of something that went down in 1983. read more

I wouldn't call this a dive bar anymore. They've got a dozen hi-def TVs and the lighting is pretty bright. The older morning/afternoon crowd that alternates day-drinking with smoke trips to the sidewalk probably keeps this place clinging to its dive reputation, but the nighttime crowd is too young and affluent to make this a true dive. Great place to watch football, and the food from next door is very good. Extra bonus: Peter Weller's brother is in there just about every day and will tell fun stories about being an extra and hanging out with his bro on sets. read more
