My friends invited me here i have to to say that this is a cool little bar. The bartenders are super cool, I hate snooty bar tenders. The pitchers are reasonably priced 8 dollars i think, and the atmosphere was lively. Its kinda of a locals bar which to me is a good sign meaning people come back for a reason. Beware of this shit hole establishment! First time here and our last time. My friends and I couldn't even finish our drinks because we were so pissed because we never experienced service like this! The bartender was rude, drunk, dirty and racist! We ordered 3 shots of Patron but there was only enough for one and so we ordered just one and a coupe of beers. So we get the shot of Patron and the beers and he goes back to get a lime and as he is giving the lime to my friend with his bare hands, he is literally rubbing his grimy fingers all over it. First off, I love dive bars and appreciate sarcastic asshole bartenders because I have a sense of humor but this was blatant racism I had experienced. My family and I were celebrating my graduation with some great burgers from MVP's next door and wanted beers so we ate at O' Connels. Everything was fine and normal but I think as the bartender was getting more wasted his true feelings came out. He called us "those Mexicans asking for Mexican beers" like that was a crime. He reluctantly poured a tequila shot using the bottom of a dirty glass to shake it and when we asked for a lime he grabbed it in his hand and rolled it around and crushed it before placing it on the bar for us. So much hate was in this beardo's eyes as he was talking about us to other customers he even used the middle finger when he stroked his hair looking our way. I asked the MVP workers who are great, if anything like this has ever happened and they said no but they will call their manager. I guess he called O'Connell's because the manager drunkenly stood up and asked if there was a problem. He was there the whole time?! He said "I've been here 49 years, there's always two sides to the story". I tried explaining what had happened and he started to fix a lightbulb and never make eye contact and pretty much walk away after saying again "I've been here 49 years". This was not okay, I can not describe the disgust that we all felt from their hate. To them lowering our music, disdain for our presence and treating us like second class citzens. Never again, and please don't come here. Racist businesses have no business being in the city I love, Long Beach. 49 years too long. read more

I'm going to have to agree with some of the previous reviewers. I used to come here all the time when Johnny Rocket worked here. The new staff blows massive chunks of puke. I have been going to 3636, Reno and many bars in the Belmont area for over 15 years. I moved within walking distance of O'Connells and would have to say I will risk a DUI before I go back into this bar. The bar itself, TV's, pool tables etc...are awesome. I love the atmoshpere and the people. But the two bartenders working their full time need a good ass kicking. The one older gentlemen that wears yacht attire is a complete prick. He acts like he owns the place. More than once I have been in there when other people have put music on the juke box and he turned it off. He told them it's not that kind of bar and gave them drink tokens. This has happened three times that I have been there. If he does not like the music of choice he will turn it off. Now for Sean.... I went there with my brother around 9pm. This guy has no personallity and is very rude. He ignores you the whole time and is very very slow. There was 7 people in the bar watching the simpsons on TV. I stood at the bar for at least 4 minuets without him even looking at me. He stood there washing his glasses and wiping down the counter the whole time. I finanlly asked him for a drink and he said sure hold on one second. Then he walked over to another customer and started pooring him another drink. I sat down and asked my brother if he wanted to go to the Reno Room instead. He then walked up and waited another 2-3 minuets at the bar of, now only 6 people sitting there and asked the bar tender for a drink. His response was in a minuet and then he picked up his cell phone and appeared to be texting. The funny thing is it didn't seem like he even knew what the hell was going on. Maybe he was really really stoned or something. I mean the toilet could of explode from a massive 10.0 earthquake and shit pooring out everywhere and he would of not notices. We finnally got fed up and walked out. We went straight to the Reno Room. There was about 20 people sitting around the bar and one bar tender. She served our drinks before we could even sit down. To the owner of O'Connells...FIRE those two idiots. They are rude and you are losing business. I hear you always talking shit about Richard and the 36 but quarantee James, Lisa and John over at 36 pull in twice as much then your bar tenders. Not that I like Richard I think he is a major ashole but I would rather give him my money then those two idiots you have. I recommend these bars over O'Connells. Ashelys, 3636, Reno, V-Room, Red Room and Bradleys. read more

Dive bar is right. This place is great. I have lived within stumbling distance of the establishment for about the last five years. It can have a very locals feeling on some nights, but not in a "who the hell are you" kind of way. It's definitely the kind of place that most people stop by for a drink or two, as opposed to hanging out in all night. In the last couple of years it has turned into frat boy hell on the weekends, but the sorority girls make that easier to handle. read more

O Connell's has a great atmosphere. It's cash or ATM only. A great place for a Bloody Mary or Bailey's and coffee. Prices are reasonably low compared to places a short distance away. read more

O'Connell's has the BEST Bloody Mary's in town!!! The bar has a very relaxed and definitely local vibe. Enjoy the Mary's, Sunday football, some music of your choice on the juke box, pool, and brunch from the place next door...not a bad way to spend a few hours. read more

My first visit to O'Connells since moving into the neighborhood. Like others have noted, it's your typical neighborhood dive bar, complete with cantankerous regulars, inexpensive drinks and billiards. Had a good time and met some interesting characters. Look forward to coming back. read more

I love this place. The bartenders may come off as rude but they're just "no nonsense." They're great, kind hearted people if you act like normal people. This is one of the oldest bars in LB. If you're looking for a lounge, go somewhere else. OConnels for the win. read more

I have to admit, I may be known by there as a "regular". And yes, I do find that a scary prospect seeing the other regulars. As many of the other yelpers, I do live within crawling distance of this place. I have of course crawled home many a time. The drinks are cheap and stiff. The double bloody marys are always on special and will knock you on your ass (depending on the bartender that makes them). Just a word of advice almost every bartender there hates making them, but it is worth the dirty look. I love to play music on their jukebox which recently acquired over 60 Neil Diamond songs so watch out! read more

Great local bar! Might be a little uncomfortable if your a newbie but with a smile and an open mind you will love this place. Diverse crowd is inevitable but adds to the charm. This Place Rocks..! It is atattched to MVP which makes great food. But back to the bar . All the Bartenders ROCK, they go out of their way to make you your drink or try to get you the best alternative if they can't. Roderick has gone out of his way multiple times to make sure my drink is available to me.! Being the last stop on my way home.. I APPRECIATE him for it.! I'm sorry to say that I have to rat out a few of my Country peeps who were outside conspiring to write a bad review about Roderick on Yelp. I was walking back in when I heard them talking about calling him Racist because the bar didn't have Dos Equis beer. I'm sorry my peeps.. But your rant falls on deaf ears.. You didn't hurt him..
